A New Era for Disney? Epic Mickey Discussion - Game Informer Cover Unveiled!

Disney has always been the iconic entertainment megaplex aimed at the younger generations. They've had outings with more mature audiences in the past, but when someone says Disney, you think Lion King, not the Sixth Sense. However, it seems that Disney is trying to distance themselves from the kid only guise and step into a new era of appealing to all ages. Taking a page from Nintendo's book, it seems Disney sees that the way to keep its title as entertainment Dynasty is to appeal to gamers.

We all know how Disney recently purchased Marvel Comics. That seems like a big step towards appealing to older consumers. Disney also combined with Square Enix to put some of the most iconic Villains and Heroes of the RPG genre together with the most iconic Cartoon characters of all time. This produced a deep and dark story that draws in players of many age groups. The Kingdom Hearts series is obviously a step away from what disney typically deals with. However, it still held the cutesy mantra that we are familiar with.

The new game Disney is cooking up seems to blow all that out of the water though. Under the working title of Epic Mickey, their new endeavor would be ambitious for any company, let alone one that is seen solely as a entity appealing to youngsters. All that has been released about the game, which was "revealed" last December, is some amazing concept art. The game takes place in what appears to be a discarded, steam-punk version of their Theme Park, Disney World in Florida. The mood is somber, and the art is almost chilling in its nature. However, words can barely describe it. Have a look-see for yourself.

This picture shows part of Epcot being carried on the back of a submarine with legs. (Monstro, perhaps?) Notice the decrepit look, and gears protruding from the "limbs".

This image appears to show forgotten characters invading a beach in anticipation of an attack. Notice the carriers with the faces of the Seven Dwarves (Grumpy (?) and Dopey). The hands on their back look like Mickey's glove, while the holding compartments are the Teacups from the Theme Park. These ships apparently drop off the characters on the beach, lowering them with their hands.

Steam Punk Goofy

The project is being headed by former Deus Ex designer Warren Spector, whose studio was acquired by Disney in 2007. It seems headed to the Wii as well. The concept is that classic Disney characters are tired of being cast aside to be forgotten in the annexes of History, while Mickey Mouse continues to live on as an icon of Disney. Not much else is known except that the game is supposedly a platformer and the player will interact with the artwork in the game.

More artwork can be found here.

I for one am very excited for this game. Yeah, there's nothing revealed but it looks great!

EDIT: Note, I know Disney owns many franchises, and those firms have created dark movies, games, etc. However, this is one that Disney's iconic characters will be staring in, featuring their own theme park, The Magic Kingdom. This is a huge step, imo.

Actually, Disney right now would be the one that appeals to all ages. I don't think they ever want to be seen as a company that puts out anything other than something their parents will let their kids consume without a second thought. They and Nintendo has a very similar objective.

That said, Epic Mickey definitely doesn't look like it fits that very well. Much more creepy and bizarre. I posted these shots a little while back in the Disney Buys Marvel thread and just posted this there as well:

I honestly thought this project was cancelled but now I'm holding out hope that we'll learn more next month =)

Also, buying Marvel really says nothing about the direction of Disney imo. And Kingdom Hearts is anything but a step away from what Disney normally deals with.

Whoa!! This is one Disney game I would most definitely look into. The fantasy is similar to that of the scenery in the Edge Chronicles. I'm excited to here more about this.

BTW, Disney going past the realm of children is not new. Usually, they just don't advertise their name behind such projects, though.

Kingdom Hearts showed a a minor step for Disney. I mean, it's kinda dark when creatures basically eat your hearts, transforming you into that creature. They were rated T as well. I feel the fact that Mickey was paired with a darker story was a step. Even if Mickey was the one bringing light, blah blah blah.

And I didn't see those pictures in the Marvel thread, whoops. I did hear about it from a blog about the new game informer cover though. I hope that the magazine will have good information. the game looks great, and hopefully won't let me down. Just seeing Goofy like that gives me high hopes.

Finally, I didn't mean to imply that Disney buying Marvel was a step toward all ages. It's just them gobbling up the media world, as usual.

I edited that in right as you posted lol

Well, Pink, I think that's still tame compared to something like Lion King which was basically a furry version of Hamlet =P You had the protagonist's father killed off by a stampede by the uncle while the son watched. Damn. The day that movie comes out on Blu-Ray I'm buying it... they also needt o put the game on Virtual Console or PSN or XBLA or something. It was super hard but I loved what bits of it I could play before game overing =P

Also, this thread probably should exist outside the Marvel thread so yeah it's good you made it. Especially once the GI info comes out.

Yeah, which is why this game is fascinating to me. They can't use a different name (like Touchstone) because it's using their mascot characters. You can't pretend it's not Disney when you have Mickey Mouse and Goofy involved!

This looks fucking surreal. And agreeing with firestorm, you ever saw the Incredibles? The villain dies by getting stuck in an aeroplane motor. that's just... cruel and macabre

The thing about the Incredibles is that they portray it in a humorous light. I agree with you guys though. They have had darker stories. Lion King, Incredibles, even as recently as Up and Meet the Robinsons all featured darker stories. (I cried during Up, lol) However, as we have all mentioned, they have never had something so outright creepy and seemingly dark as this and directly put Mickey and Goofy, and other icons of Disney directly in the game. I'm excited ^^.

One thing I hope is that they put the game for multiple systems. I'd love to see these images with PS3 and 360 graphics.

that's just... cruel and macabre
Not to mention a clever use of foreshadowing and frankly one way to make sure the bad guy never returns.

This game looks absolutely intense. I love the premise- it's about time somebody remembered that all of those classic characters exist! But does this mean that Mickey Mouse, freaking Mickey Mouse, is the bad guy?

It looks like every little thing Disney has ever stood for is about to be shattered in this.

From another board last month:
Holy wow. Did some perusing and stumbled upon this one-time-Junction Point concept artist's site, and I think this is what Gamasutra stumbled upon.

This looks like a Country Bear or something after acid. File calls it a "Beetle Thing"
mm7rko.jpg

This is pretty terrifying take on Mickey Mouse, the file says "Beetleworx," and I presume this is a variation of the BWX guy in the OP.

File's named "Cityscape."

Concepts for the Castle seen in the OP.

Another concept

This file is named "Mean Street," which I guess is a take on the Main Street section of the Disney parks, and suggests that there may be exploration of the various "themed lands."
2dqstuq.jpg

This one's named "Tomorrowland," and would also suggest that there that one is exploring various "Themed Lands." Maybe even space.

That beach scene the Gamasutra writer was describing. It's absolutely amazing.

So, in conclusion: THIS GAME MUST COME OUT!!! (Feel free to add this to the OP, BTW.)
Honestly, I think I can see this working in a way that makes sense for Disney. It'll just be some kind of evil force taking over Disney land and you gotta set it back right. And it will be friggin amazing.

Nice find! I hadn't seen most of those. I like the use of things like pencils as scaffolding and things like that.

This will definitely be worth keeping an eye on. The steampunk style is very cool indeed. Of course, it all depends on how the game plays. If it plays well, then count me in.

BTW, I remember EGM reported on this back when they were still in publication. They said that Disney commissioned some developer to create a "platform-style Mario killer starring Mickey Mouse." From that statement, it made it seem that Disney just wanted a bigger slice of the video game pie (Kingdom Hearts wasn't enough for them, apparently), but from the concept art, this looks like it'll be really cool.

This looks absolutely incredible. I love the concept of steampunk and applying it to disneyland is a stroke of genius, I am definitely staying updated on this. Fantastic artwork - lets hope the gameplay lives up to it.

Here's some more concept art. Honestly, I would normally think that the idea of a steam punk Mickey Mouse game would be retarded, but I find the concept art to be very disturbing and intriguing. I am certainly keeping my eye on this game!

i swear these screenshot really creep the fuck out of me. I mean the pink elephants from dumbo were scary enough, make them a fucking android?! that's how you get me to shit my pants. :(

not to mention all the screenshots with all the desolation and water and... nothingness except crazy machine/disney hybrids really give you a sense of "fuck how do i get out of here it's pretty fucking creepy"

I've been following this game for a while now :3

Can't remember where it was from (Kotaku, maybe?) but i read an article that guessed from "paint thinner" picture that the game was about old/unappreciated Disney characters taking revenge on Mickey.

This looks hella creepy. I love the mutated monster with Jafar's, Goofy's, and the alligator from Peter Pan's face on it. It's so abstract and gritty.

I wonder why Mickey's castle/world is so... well, like that? Instead of pretty castles and whatnot. I'm enjoying it.

You think the you get to play as Mickey (I believe so) or the forgotten characters?

I'd love to see this on PS3. Hope it's not for the Wii, I feel that it would hold this game back graphically.

Spoiler Alert: “Epic” November Issue Revealed

The rumors have been flying for months. From the outrageous (some actually thought we were bought by Disney, which was quite funny), to the right on (our forums pieced together all the clues from the last issue), the time has come to lay all rumors to rest. The November cover is indeed, Disney Epic Mickey, coming exclusively to the Nintendo Wii from Junction Point and Disney Interactive Studios.

This issue is the first of our highly anticipated redesign that subscribers should be receiving around October 12th.

There are a number of other highlights, including a Skate 3 first-look, an in-depth, seven-page report on the relationship between Hollywood and video games, interviews with executives from all three console manufacturers, and much, much more.

But the biggest news is our expanded coverage online that is available to all gameinformer.com visitors. Starting at 4PM CST today we will unveil the first companion piece to the magazine: an exclusive video interview with Warren Spector about his relationship with Mickey Mouse, including a portion of his giant Disney memorabilia collection that is housed at Junction Point. We will also have a photo-blog chronicling many of the outstanding pieces in his collection hitting at the same time.

This is just the beginning of our month of Mickey madness that will unfold over the next three plus weeks. So be sure to watch our Disney Epic Mickey landing page over the following month.

We don’t want to spoil what’s to come, but we have some amazing things in store, including screenshots, animations, and tons of concept art and music.

Watch for the issue in your mailbox over the coming weeks and make sure to come to gameinformer.com for the latest updates and news.

Oh yeah, and one last thing. All GI covers from here on out will feature a full wrap-around cover. Here is the Mickey cover in all its glory. The best part, and the reason we switched to these, is that the subscriber address label and the UPC will be on the back so it no longer clashes with our wonderful cover art.

Excellent, Firestorm. I had been wating for news from GI. I'm most interested in hearing more about the game play. But, what I think I'm going to love the most is the
tons of concept art and music.

If they continue with the eerie theme and carry it into the music, these could be truly remarkable pieces. Imagine, "It's a Small World After All", but even creepier!
