Best Movie of 2009?

Am I the only person who hated Avatar? Seriously, that move was just some pretty shit.

I agree, but I didn't hate it. It was excellent cinematography, but nothing else outside of that.

Forgot about Watchmen, though, that was a pretty good movie. So was Iron Man.

good:
district 9 - had a lot of obvious flaws, but compelling, and wikus was incredible. ending was disappointing but lol sequel
up! - solid even for pixar
star trek - no more needs to be said
fantastic mr. fox - quirky, artistically intriguing film that builds upon the novel by roald dahl
sherlock holmes - an interesting take on holmes, and an enjoyable, funny movie, but i felt the character interpretations in some cases need a lot of work
where the wild things are - touching (cynics might say it was artificial) and uplifting interpretation, but it was an adaptation of a picture book and had obvious structural flaws. i love the book though. karen o. and liars in the score = +++

acceptable:
state of play - on the positive end of acceptable
harry potter and the half-blood prince - harry potter and the half-blood prince

horrible:
g-force - it'd be unfair to expect anything better, but the guinea pigs were cute
new moon - it was even worse than i expected, somehow
transformers 2: revenge of the fallen - mindless, soulless drivel with too much fanservice and no real soul. explosions are a +, like the way 'having a vagina' is a + for a female hooker
angels and demons - could barely stomach that monotonous and poorly-acted shit

worst i ever have, and hopefully will, see:
paranormal activity

2012

there were a lot of films i missed =[ like coraline.

Star Trek.. what the fuck? Star Trek was the best of 2009.. highest critically acclaimed.. and from what I remember statistically had the most at the box office at that point at the year.

Other good movies were Hangover, Taking of Phelm 123, and I really liked 2012 but thats just because I like that kinda shit.

Transformers II... had to be the BIGGEST pile of shit I think I'd ever saw

Best Movies:
Star Trek, Hangover, Avatar

Worst Movies:
Transformers II (yeah the whole thing could have been way better, the only reason I'd watch it is cause Transformers in and of themselves are awesome)

No love for the Coens?

A Serious Man was a great great great fucking movie. Not just an entertaining popcorn sort of movie, but artistically as well (like all their films really). Just solid film craftsmanship all the way around.

After that I'd say Where the Wild Things Are, it's a bit of a tearjerker, and though I grew up reading it as a child, I don't doubt just about anyone that's experienced the typical American childhood would feel the same. Spike Jonze did a great job modernizing it making it his own project as well, and not just an easy rehash.

I'm sorry but I'm so sick of Avatar, the whole concept was just so rigidly formulaic to me that I couldn't really take it seriously. Pretty standard 'epic movie' stuff imo. I think that while James Cameron is a good director in a cinematographic (not a word?) sense, he's pretty typical in every other criteria, except that he has alot of ambition as a filmmaker and access to HUGE budgets.

I will also mention Transformers 2, only to direct people to the South Park episode "Imaginationland", in which the U.S. government tries to take advice from a series of Hollywood directors about how to solve their problem. The Michael Bay segment of that is dead on.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Paranormal Activity. I didn't see it but my friends saw it... in talking to most people it was either really good or just terrible.
i am quite undecided. i was pretty much waiting for some massive scare that never happened, but i was definitely engaged. the dragging scene and the end were the closest i got to being frightened.

also that night i woke myself up by murmuring something in my sleep. i was so scared!

I recommend the book "House of Leaves". It's similar in theme to Paranormal Activity, but much better executed, and is one of the best-written books in history, in terms of technical construction.

Hm, well out of the ones I saw in 2009, I really liked Up and Orphan.

Up was an amazing Pixar movie which was entertaining for both children and adults. Also, like a lot of the good disney movies, it has it's really sad moments. I honestly didn't find anything wrong with this movie when I watched it.

Orphan
, which I don't think anyone has mentioned yet, was also a very good movie in 2009, and it's one of my favourites. While the trailer made it look like some shitty horror movie, it's really not. It's a lot more of a drama than a horror (which would explain why it's not shitty, like a lot of recent horror movies have been). In this movie, I actually fear for the life of the family, and it doesn't just have meaningless killing like some zombie movies do. The villain is also awesome too. I also love the acting in this movie, especially since a lot of the actors aren't big stars, and there are a lot of child actors here who are just starting out. They all do their job very well, especially since the little kids actually act like kids, and the adults are being adults. While I know not many people would say it's the best movie of 2009, I would say it's definitely my favourite of 2009.

Great:
- Inglourious Basterds
- District 9
- Up!
- Taken
- Star Trek
- The Hangover
- Coraline

Average:
- Sherlock Holmes

Terrible:
- Paranormal Activity
- Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen

Haven't seen Avatar (nor too many other movies, for that matter), so I can't comment.

cant really decide on which was my favorite, but I really enjoyed

District 9
Inglorious Basterds
Star Trek
Sherlock Holmes

Well, there's a Hindi movie called "3 idiots", which I think beats every movie on the list. Superb film.

Avatar was actually listed by a few people? Really? I mean, yes, the CGI was good, and the battle scene at the end was really entertaining. This does not make up for the shitburger dialogue and the predictable story. I mean seriously, I should not be able to figure out the ending 1/3 of the way in.

Up in the Air and Up for greatest movies this year.

It took you more than 15 minutes to predict the story?

I rather enjoyed Avatar, but the recycled concepts (oh, humans are evil, greedy, and heartless, except the protagonist everyone in the audience identifies with? okay sure) and all too familiar plot did bother me a lot. It seemed like I'd seen a movie where a group of scientists and an overly military leader enter a foreign land with the initial intention of making lots of money, but then the protagonist learns about the culture of the strange people who live there while falling in love with one of the locals, leading to conflict between him and the rest of his party, resulting in the destruction of some shit, but then eventually all of the other humans don't make it and they don't get away with the treasure while the protagonist is left with the exiting new culture he's found along with a few choice other characters, love continuing there on after.

Nope, not familiar at all. Fuck, they even had goddamn flying machines. Not sure if I got the plot exactly right as I haven't seen the other A movie in awhile, but you get my point.

You could also argue it's even closer to Dances With Wolves if you wanted, but I haven't seen it.

Up in the Air and Up for greatest movies this year.
Up was pretty wonderful.

The Hangover and Funny People were good comedies.

It took me minus three days to guess the story of Avatar. Because it's the same as every other scifi white-man-makes-an-anti-colonisation-movie.

I think 2009 was OK.

The were some good comedy movies:
The Hangover (perfect xD)
Ice Age 3 (I wonder why nobody mentioned this one?)
The Ugly Truth (it's not that brilliant but it's alright)

The best overall movie was Avatar, even if the story wasn't that new.
Ingloriues Basterds and HarryPotter6 were also nice.

The biggest Fail movies:
Crank 2
Terminator 4
2012

and of course: Transformers 2

Inglorius Basterds for me, new approach of the stale, done-to-death World War film genre.

huge spoiler, don't click if you haven't seen it:

I spent the whole film thinking 'oh well, Hitler obviously doesn't die like this so it's going to be interesting to see how the assassination attempt fails' so when Hitler actually does die and then gets shot about a dozen times in the face it was followed by a moment of stunned silence and then a roar of cheering and laughter - easily my fondest cinema moment this year.

Avatar sucks, bad script, bad characters, the only good point is the use of 3-D techniques...

Best movie--> District 9 and Up!

Up and The Hangover are my two favourites. They were both pretty funny (especially The Hangover) while Up had some really touching parts as well. Star Trek was an enjoyable film, but I can't remember 90% of the story in that movie, just the action scenes.

i'm probably going to say up and the hangover just like everyone else, but i also want to recommend coraline to anyone who hasn't seen it yet. it was one of the best movies of the year with a really compelling story and great animation. also surprised no one has said i love you, man as that was probably one of the funniest movies of the year.

going to see avatar tomorrow as well.

Just having pretty CGI is not stopping people from listing Coraline. Coraline was beautiful and incredibly dumb; I think it might be a better movie muted, honestly.
