2010 music

new CC leaked, if it is as lo-fi and the rest of the vocals are as terrible as Doe Deer's then it won't be very good but i haven't listened to it yet.

edit: ok it's very tedious and the other 2 noisy lo-fi songs aren't very good either. Year of Silence is probably one of the best songs i've heard all year (Jónsi sample is fucking amazing) so compared to that the rest of the album is a real letdown.

Yeah I'm like the biggest streetlight manifesto fan ever, but this album is just such a disappointment. I've been waiting for 99 Songs for like 3 years and then they just release a bunch of lame covers like every ska band. I know they're trying to screw over their record company or whatever, but I'm just so disappointed that they had to resort to the generic "cover 80's songs" mentality that almost every other ska band seems to have :/

So much talk about BSS, but no one mentioning that Stars has "The Five Ghosts" coming out in June?

I have tickets to one of the preview shows, and am beyond excited about that.

I really did like FRR though. Not their best, but still a great album.

Listened to new CC a couple times and I have to agree with extra. Year of Silence is the only stand-out, although Celestica is enjoyable too.

holy shit yes

also new four year strong is nothing short of amazing

On this note. New Cancer Bats is awesome.

Also, I don't quite like Enemy of the World quite as much as Rise or Die Trying, but I think Enemy of the World just has to grow on me. They're both fantastic regardless.

Minus the Bears OMNI is out in 16 or 17 days. I've been checking constantly for leaks but nothin Q__Q

New Coheed and Cambria is pretty mediocre. First 3 tracks sucked pretty hard IMO, everything after that was enjoyable.

Are you saying that I am joking? Put simply: when your lead single is about people you consider your friends not noticing you, the album is not going to be triumphant. Perhaps you are confusing Obama's promotional video featuring Fake Empire for the song itself whose main lyric is "We're half awake in our fake empire." Or, Slow Show which is about fucking things up and desperately wanting to make things right with your loved one so much so that you can't pay attention to your surroundings.

Also, RE: Sound of Silver having problems, it may just be me, but I can't listen to a full album of dance music. It bores me. I reviewed it for my radio station when it came out and gave Someone Great and All My Friends the highest ranking and then one more pity thumbs up for North American Scum because it was radio friendly. Also New York I Love You is an abortion of a song.
I have a mancrush on evan so I like to comment on his posts.

the lyrics of The National are anything but triumphant, but I do believe there are points where the musical arrangement/melody suggests something of a "moral victory" or a hard-fought, battered-and-bruised triumph--think "Fake Empire" (especially the horns at the end), "All the Wine," the bellowing major-key vocal melody contradicting the desperation of a line like "I won't fuck us over/I'm Mr. November." in fact, that "pseudo-victory" feeling conveyed in the music is what keeps Alligator from sagging and moping the way that Boxer does...in fact, though Boxer appears to be most people's favorite, I find Alligator to be head-and-shoulders better.

I do like LCD Soundsystem. I didn't for a long time, and then randomly I decided to give him another try and it just kind of clicked. I have to be in the mood to listen to him though. Dance music is hard to listen to for long periods of time--for example, try listening to an entire Girl Talk album, sober with no distractions, it's really hard--but a few albums I can listen through...as much as I don't want to say it because of Pitchfork, I immensely enjoy Echoes by The Rapture. Speaking of The Rapture, I think they're coming out with another album this year.

Also, I started listening to Astro Coast by Surfer Blood, and I enjoy it a lot. I enjoy all of the surfy sounding stuff that's suddenly en vogue again.

I am inclined to agree with havoc as far as the music sounding uplifting on Fake Empire and it is that interplay between the downer lyrics and the upper music that makes the track so appealing. Overall, I would definitely describe Boxer as a "resigned" album.

The thing about dance albums for me is that they are repetitive, by necessity. Repetition makes for great club music, but when I am listening on my own time I can really only stand one or two 8+ minute songs that don't change at a time. Although I will agree that Echoes is really good.

I've been listening to a lot of new folk that has come out this year. July Veirs released one of the best female vocal folk albums I've heard in a long time; Sam Amidon released a new album that finds him expanding his sound beyond vocals + guitar/banjo into even electronics and more lush string arrangements; Tallest Man on Earth received Best New Music from Pitchfork and has released another great collection of tracks (which aren't entirely dylan derivative); and Horse Feathers have a great new album which (at least of these four) has the most Celtic influence in it.

Also, in Americana the new Roky Erickson album with Okkervil River as his backing band is pretty great as might be expected.

Hmmmm, Congratulations - MGMT has been out for how long now? Well like a week over here, I've listened to it 3 times or so, and am not hugely impressed. It's not a scratch on Oracular Spectacular tbh. I quite like "Siberian Breaks," "It's Working," and "Congratulations" but then rest anyone could have written. Maybe it will grow on me.

Whoever mentioned "For the Masses" deserves respect, for it is awesome. Some of the Plastic Beach stuff is amazing (Glitter Freeze, Superfast Jellyfish, Empire Ants, On Melancholy Hill, I could go on too) but some of it is pretty crap (White Flag, Welcome to the world of the plastic beach.)

Can't wait for Pendulum - Immersion!

i have the new Horse Feathers (it's down in the queue a bit but i'll get to it) aleady, but i'm going to bookmark everything else for later perusal.

new The Ruby Suns is ok, but is sort of directionless and just wanders around doing nothing.

new Spoon...has failed to change my opinion of the band. pretty dull.

new Yellow Swans is quite good, and i look forward to unpacking it further.

listening to the new Gorillaz now. prtty "smoov". probably a 3.5/5, but i doubt it will get much play time from me.

new hold steady is ok, it's pretty much what i expected, but to be honest i've had enough of what they have to offer at this point.

boys and girls is still a great album but theres only so much of the same music they can still make interesting. hurricane jesse is probably my favourite track of the handful i listened to, but..eh. im sure plenty of people will still enjoy it, though.

Boys And Girls is my favorite of last decade, definitely.

Hurricane J and The Weekenders are killer, though. We Can Get Together is pretty damn good, too.

Also, High Violet just leaked.

High Violet just fucking leaked.

i loved boys and girls a lot but the more distance i get from it and that time in my life when it came out, the more I love Separation Sunday and the more I realise that "Killer Parties" is the Hold Steady's best song.

High Violet rocks.

Also, if you don't dig Spoon, just listen to Kill The Moonlight until you like it. Seriously, it's the only damn way.

Also, I'm going to make a prediction: TV On The Radio will come back from their break and release an album almost immediately, before the end of 2010.

It will be crazy, folks.

OMNI... KINDA SORTA kicks alot of ass so far.

Edit: Oh and Excuses is actually really good. Scratch what I said before.

I actually don't think I like For the Masses as much as MUSIC FOR AN ACCELERATED CULTURE, and yeah, I just can't groove to congratulations nearly as much as Oracular Spectacular. I'm hoping it'll grow on me like the weirder stuff on OS did but Idunno.

has anyone heard the new HEALTH track from the forthcoming disco2? it's the only new material on it, but oh man it's so good. it still sounds distincly HEALTH, but instead of a noisy clusterfuck it's a heavy hitting synthy blast and it's probably the best thing they've ever put out. doubt the rest of disco 2 will follow though, being just remixes of old material, but who knows.

also i kinda really want to buy high violet but also don't want to wait to hear it :(

I've finally decided that I don't like the new LCD Soundsystem. Don't know why.

I listened to Transference awhile back from Spoon, I liked it alot, one of the best of the year IMO.

As for The Hold Steady, I agree with Stoo, I've gotten all I can out of them.

Like ex and Stellar before me, Year of Silence is easily the best track on CC's new album, and the "lo-fi" duo (Fainting Spells/Doe Deer) are quite horrible.

The rest of the album might grow on me after I listen to it some more.

I'm in the process of downloading Avantasia's newest albums. It's been a long time since I've listened to... any power metal other than Angra really. It all kinda sounds the same to me but we'll see if this is different.

On the topic of Angra, they're also planning to release an album this year.

I fucking love Angra.
