One of the things we need to keep in mind when running theories is that GameFreak does not care about the competetive metagame.
I disagree. Gamefreak may not analyze competitive Pokemon to the extent that we do here on Smogon, and yes, the single-player storyline probably receives the majority of their attention. But they obviously care about competitive play, as many of the moves they've created are so useless in the main game:
Recover/Slack Off - Why bother wasting a moveslot when you could just buy a Hyper Potion?
All of the True Status moves - Oh, Elite Four Member Koga wastes a turn hitting me with Toxic? Fine, I just use a Full Heal. Then we're right back where we started.
Refresh/Aromatherapy/Heal Bell - See above.
Stealth Rock/Spikes - Two of the most annoying moves on Shoddy lose much of their effectiveness in the single-player game, since the brain-dead AI only switches when its Pokemon are KO'd.
These are the most obvious ones, but there are a whole lot of others. Have you ever Leech-Seeded Lance's Dragonite, or Substituted when battling Cynthia's Garchomp? No, and why would you? It's simply not necessary. If Gamefreak was exclusively interested in children, why would it include these moves that a typical child wouldn't understand, let alone use?
Someone pointed out something interesting to me. For the last two gens, we've had a flightless bird in each starter trio. And it's been in the same order that the first two of the commonly recognized "dragon-like" starter pattern was: Fire then Water. Could we be seeing a Grass starter that's a flightless bird this time around?
For those who don't know what I mean with "dragon-like" starter, it's that Charmander, Totodile, and Treecko all evolve to the point where they can learn Dragon Claw. Treecko's stature (two legged, dragon-like) was predicted by many before he was revealed. An avian Grass starter wouldn't be a surprise, I'd say.
Wow, that's an interesting observation. Nice job spotting that pattern. So, a flightless, Grass-typed bird...a Kakapo, perhaps?

I saw one of these things watching Animal Planet, if anyone's wondering why I appear to have memorized the names of random animals.
