They are on the covers, if that means anything to you.
Bulbapedia says they are both Dragon-type. I'm curious, what other types do you think they would be?
Hmmm...let's discuss this for a second. Arceus' Species name is the Alpha Pokemon, which implies that it came first (Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet). It's found at the Hall of Origin. And let's take a look at its Pokedex data:
Diamond: It is described in mythology as the Pokemon that shaped the universe with its 1,000 arms.
Pearl: It is told in mythology that this Pokemon was born before the universe even existed.
Platinum: It is said to have emerged from an egg in a place where there was nothing, and shaped the world.
Of all these, the Platinum entry is the most interesting, since the theory of the "cosmic egg" is found in Hinduism creation myths. However, according to those stories, even though everything in the universe existed inside the egg, the egg was surrounded by "ten qualities" and was divided in half by a deity known as Vayu...I'm not sure if Vayu was supposed to be inside the egg, or outside it. Man, this stuff is confusing.
Anyway, let's look at Vayu for a moment. Here's a quote about him from Wikipedia:
"In the hymns, Vayu is "described as having 'exceptional beauty' and moving noisily in his shining coach, driven by two or forty-nine or thousand white and purple horses. A white banner is his main attribute."[2] Like the other atmospheric deities, he is a "fighter and destroyer", "powerful and heroic."[5]
Vayu is the lord of wind and the "breath of life". The deity Yama is the polar opposite of him, being the lord of death. And here's another quote from Wikipedia:
"In art, some Sanskrit sources say that he should be of dark color, resembling the rain-cloud, with two arms, fire-colored eyes and sharp side-tusks."
Maybe I'm just seeing these things because I want to see them, but if GameFreak is looking for a conflicting duo, these two would be a good choice.

I have come to believe that Zecrom represents urbanization, covering the sky w/ clouds of Smog (if you look at PokeBeach's translations....Even the city's name translates to "Clouds being blown by the wind") or just ruining the environment/was ruined and became the mechanic monster it is through urbanization.
Reshiram will probably represent nature, the opposite of urbanization.
I can imagine if we get a light type (plz no) the Japanese will get a "good" type. Dark translates to the "Evil" type in Japan. It might not even be a light type, but maybe something that refers to the intensity of light (dark is when there is little light, while some unneeded new type would be a word for plenty of light), but all I can think of is bright at the moment....

Arcues is a god Pokemon, but it's not meant to be equivalent to the Abrahamic God. He may have created the Pokemon Universe, but he's not omnipotent. I can't remember exactly what it's based on, but Arceus, along with the Dragon Trio, are definitely along the general lines of the ancient Greek, Egyptian, and Norse and modern Hindu 'gods'. Unique, very powerful, immortal but not necessarily unkillable, and with key roles in creation, maintenance, and/or destruction of the Universe.
We don't need any new types, either thematically or competitively. But I wouldn't be surprised either way. And if we do get a new type, Light's by far the best concept that's been suggested. To get something like "air" or "sound" or "cosmic" and not get Light would be the really stupid outcome IMHO.
Don't forget that there is already an 18th type, Shadow. It appeared only in spinoff games and is intentionally off-balance, meaning we're highly unlikely to see it in the main games, but it disproves the contention that Game Freak have added no new types since GS.

If you even look under the type section of Shadow Attacks, it says ???. The Pokemon were called Shadow Pokemon, and the attacks had Shadow in them, but they were really ???, not a new type.
What you think is the best idea is the worst in Japan. A "Good" type is not what they are looking for. And as I said , the opposite of Dark is not Light.
It wasn't really a "type". But more a "state" in which a Pokemon found itself in...
And these couldn't even be used in main cartridge games, so they didn't affect the metagame at all.

I don't know. Unless they do some really unique type combinations this time (Some decent Poison pokemon please? Poison/Steel would be good.) then frankly, I wouldn't mind a new type. It really won't kill the game, unless the Type is super effective against everything. The game needs something new battle-wise and not just new modes.
If we do get Light, make it Super Effective against Dark (Villainous people are put to the sword), Ghost (The undead are exorcised) Poison (Purity cures Pollution) and Psychic (Witches are smited by Good), but weak to Poison (But Purity can be corrupted by Pollution) and Fighting (War destroys Peace). Maybe one more weakness, but I can't think of any other 'Good' themed ones.

Yea...then what's the opposite of Dark? Some of you guys are getting too specific with these things. Pokemon is simple. They're not going to go all "ok our meaning of Dark is this and only this so that means...[...]"

That would be a horrible type combo in my opinion. 4x weak to the most used move in the game? Yikes, lol,
But I'm all up for new type combos. Manectric evo with Fire/Electric ftw!
Maybe give it an ability specifically against it to counter it. It might be good then. I just feel a Steel typing can help Poison to be defensive. Since they aren't improving its aggressive ability, upping its defense is another option. Maybe give it a move, Corruption. Weather effect that gives acid rain. Ups the power of Poison moves and maybe increase the chance of Poisoning happening from a move?
I dunno. I feel this is poison's time to shine. They and maybe Ghost should get first picks to inventive new type combinations.
