The flamer doesn't give a shit if the other person gets annoyed or not, so why change his actions?
This line stands out as questionable. It makes one curious about your actual depth of knowledge on the subject.
A FLAMER has the goal to FLAME. How is this accomplished? Annoying the other person. A flamer/troll's sole goal is to annoy someone and elicit a reaction. If the other person didn't get annoyed he would be unsuccessful and thus he would change his actions.
Anyone with a dedicated intent to flame has the primary objective of annoy target and create an impact or draw a result.
It is not the person's fault for being insulted, you can't just act like serial trolls or rude people are sitting there blameless for knowingly taking negative action against someone. lol how clueless, yes some people are easily offended and could use to shrug things off, but when a person's INTENT is to offend them, is it REALLY their fault for being insulted? Successful troll is successful exists for a reason.
What if the troll strikes a nerve? Example:
troll: lol uR gay
troll: you loved suckin your dad's cock
troll-target was actually sexually abused by his father as a child
is it REALLY his fault for getting insulted because he was a sexual abuse victim? please.
what a good troll looks for is the weak point, the subject that their target will take most offense to and be hurt by most. once they find what they are particularly defensive about you focus on that. so please, continue saying it's the insulted's fault for taking offense because of a circumstance that happened to them and a flamer working to further chip their armour.
of course, the casual flamer/troll who just wants to post a bunch of stupid crap will likely not go to this depth (only a flamer seeking to single someone out) but that doesn't negate their casual tossing of "your mother never loved you that's why smogon SUCKS!!!" around, to someone whose mother walked out on them. anything specifically targeted or said in general will still garner offense in someone who has suffered an unfortunate experience and it is by no means their fault they have a 'weak skin' about said subject.
not everyone has the mental stamina to get over it and make jokes about it, that is a coping mechanism some people use but it does not help everyone. most people aren't overly affected but a flamer trying to provoke their reaction will still do it, you can say "IT'S JUST A TROLL DON'T TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY" but even on the internet I think everyone knows verbal abuse, mockery and trolling can still leave the thought in someone's mind or bother them.
with that out of the way:
having been a member of (and trolled) SPPf, BMGF and Smogon, Smogon's moderation system is the most lenient and, I think, the most fair. BMGF mods are not only too stupid to IP ban but they are also extremely biased. Anything you say if they don't like you can be twisted into a ban or infract-worthy post and they do favor their friends.
SPPf has Nazi-tier mods who go on vehement witch hunts and stalk users to try and justify their obsessions with permabanning. They'll badger other moderators into agreeing with them or at least not speaking up so they can get their way, they will forge anything they believe they can get away with and they will infract for the most mundane things, no matter what, if they don't like you. If they can twist it enough to make it seem to have a trolling motive, they will infract you if they don't like you, for whatever inane arbitrary reason they hold onto, year after year.
Smogon is more lax and the general rule is if you troll, be prepared to be trolled back and accept it, to me. Some people can whine enough to get their way but for the most part mods act if someone is getting out of line and they KNOW they are acting out of line, or someone is legitimately stupid. The community is dedicated to competitive battling, as opposed to SPPf and BMGF which feature anime discussion, manga discussion, fanfic sections and etc. (lololol @ terrible facets of society), yes there is the sense that if you aren't into competitive battling Smogon isn't for you, because outside of Circus Maximus and here, there's limited potential for other Pokemon discussion.
But as a whole it's tolerable. At least it doesn't have the Nazi SPPf mods who sit around stalking peoples' profiles and reading their every posts trying to justify their fetish for permabans. Which, by the way, they usually lack evidence for and any demand to provide evidence results in an angry "YOU'RE BIASED SHUT UP" defense. gr8 forum.
tl;dr smogon has better moderation than the other forums and honestly, because it infracts for a lot less than 'you're really just too stupid to function', a lot more slips through than any butthurt SPPf/Bulba mod would let slide (unless you've sucked their dick enough to get them in your favor), so it is to be expected you'll see more 'trolling' etc. on Smogon. But you can do it too!
to anyone who thinks this is hypocrisy because I am MEAN INTERNET GIRL yeah I admit it, but I also don't think that's any justification to put no blame on MEAN INTERNET HATE MACHINES for their actions just because "it's the internet your skin should be the thickness of five planetary systems" nor does it phase me when equal levels of trolling are either permitted or not permitted on all sides. not to mention I have been just a regular member as well participating and not exclusively out to destroy someone.
and the best thing a troll can have is a legacy.. people still having a cry about them even after months of little to no direct interaction.
