Google+

Death Phenomeno

Whilst checking my e-mail, I received an invite to this… thing.

I had no idea what it was, so I made a couple of searches, and it turns out that this is Google's answer to Facebook. Or something along those lines.

Now, Smogon, I must ask. As someone who does not use Facebook, why should I be enticed by this invite? What does it offer me that I haven't rejected before?

Let's broaden the questions. Why would a Facebook user switch social networks? Why is it better, why is it worse? Does anyone here even have access to this thing, to begin with?

I have it. It's better because it's a lot smoother in terms of transitions and the circles (basically groups of friends) are a lot easier to set up than friend lists on Facebook. With circles, you can post "status updates" or whatever you want with certain people that only they can see and comment on. Only you can see which circles your friends are in, all other people see is that they are in your circle. Also it features 10 way video calling.

As for its negatives, primarily the userbase because people are reluctant to transfer over to something that not as many people use. Why use something like G+ when Facebook is available and so many more people are using it?

Social networking needs to die already.

With any luck, Google+(Facebook) will end up like Youtube(+Google), and when I say that, I mean it will be a pretty bad replica of what it used to be

Got on it, don't really get it atm. the whole "hanging out" thing seems a bit weird, but could be cool maybe somehow? If anyone wants an invite I will try and sort that out next time it allows me to.. just send me a PM on here with your gmail.

I think it's smoother and cleaner than Facebook. Also less spam...for now.

I can send out invites too if people want them.

The hangout feature let's you video chat with up to 10 people and stream youtube videos with them. Google+ is also linked with gmail, so it's pretty convenient

Facebook already allows you to do this.
Well yes in a really fucking convoluted way. Facebook wasn't built from the ground up to incorporate this kind of thing.

Facebook and Skype are banding together.
Yeah, only because google+ announced the ability to video chat. Again, it's not being incorporated as a feature later on, it's built up from the beginning using it.

I don't even have a facebook, they're useless, so fuck you Google
You don't have to use it if you don't want to.

I don't really use face book all that often, but this is pretty neat. And it's not got retarded applets flooding all information channels!

Looks like Google is in for their share of money. I don't see much reason to make a Google+ account when my Facebook is still perfectly fine. Sure, some functions of Google+ may be better, but for me it's not worth the hassle of 're-collecting' all my friends again.

While it may or may not be good, the whole point of social networking is to have friends and share things, so if my friends don't transfer to Google +, I'd be literally alone there, or with a few friends. This is the same problem when I made Gmail, while in some aspects it's better than Hotmail, for instant messaging, I'd still use Hotmail because of most of my friends using msn.

this is a very good article on plus itself, and all of its relative merits, etc.
The main advantage plus has over facebook, in my opinion, is that it's a fresh start. Facebook's been around for years now, and has gone through dozens of often senseless UI changes, is full of ridiculous applets, etc. It's so cluttered and often unpleasant to use.
Plus, on the other hand, is this new, clean, simple-enough interface. I honestly think this is comparable to when MySpace started dying - it got completely overloaded by useless bullshit, and people got sick of it. A new, simple, different social network appeared, and people were eager to jump ship (especially after hype had been built through a little exclusivity).

Plus itself has a lot of neat features, though i can't really determine how useful they'll be. Hangouts (group video chats) are sort of nifty, but i can't see that catching on. Huddles (group texting) are definitely a nice feature, but they only work if everyone you know happens to have a Plus account and an Android phone. Google promises an iPhone app "soon," but it's still limited to people with smartphones, which not everybody has. The integration of Gtalk seems like it'll work pretty well, though i've yet to actually test it out.

A final point I'll make is the fact that Google apparently intends to integrate Plus into all of their services in some way, shape, or form. If they do follow through on that, and actually seamlessly integrate it into everything - Gmail, Gtalk, Search, YouTube - then, simply put, it'll be nearly impossible to avoid.

At this point, it seems like the exclusivity is slowly fading. It's not nearly as impossible to get in, seeing as more people have it and it seems to be possible to send an unlimited number of invites.

The 10 person video chat is enough of a reason on its own for me to join in. I know people are claiming about facebook and skype integration, but it has yet to officially come out to the masses AND there is still no easy, FREE, way to video chat with more than 3 people. This is fantastic and since I am already a very active user of Gmail and everything Google, cannot wait for this to become a bit more mainstream. I will def be one of those trying to promote it to all my friends.

No farmville, no daily horoscopes, no "that awkward moment when" groups.

Can we not tell all the stupid people about this?

fucking invite.
I need it.

It seems pretty nice, from what I can tell, really neat features and stuff.

From everything I've heard and seen, the only advantage is group video chat. Every other feature that Google+ has is implimentable on Facebook already anyways. I've never had problems with customizability or privacy on Facebook. I feel it's running on hype for now.

That being said, my friend has convinced a ridiculous ammount of people to sign up for Google+ who refused to join Facebook because they didn't want to be on a social network.

I quote from my tech-nerd friend:
When your facebook gets hacked, they can only find out your name (if you don't put any info on at all) and your email address. When your Google Plus gets hacked, they find out your personal information, email history, get access to your inbox, phone number, real address, and information of your contacts. I wonder which one is safer.
And I trust him with pretty much anything tech-related, so I'm sticking with Facebook.

Yeah, only because google+ announced the ability to video chat. Again, it's not being incorporated as a feature later on, it's built up from the beginning using it.

You realize that that isn't the kind of thing that would easily be programmed and tested in just a week. They obviously had beenworking on this for a bit as well. The fact that it got announced about a week after Google+ was announced is just a bad coincidence for Facebook, as many a people like you will assume it was made in response to Google+.

I find it a little redundant. We've got a billion different ways to online chat and blog anyways why should this be any better? I feel like google is grabbing at straws now

Because adapting to the competition should be frowned upon.

I'm a pretty big Google fanboy, and I like what Google+ does, but I have a feeling it's gonna flop like Google Wave unless it starts being a bit more open with people joining.

Also, a wall post like feature would be great. It's nice to choose which circles see which tweets, but the ability to post directly to someone while still having it open is nice. I know it's following the more Twitter-esque model with you just mentioning them in order to ensure they see it, but I feel like it's out of place on Google+.

I'm excited to see where it goes, not that I don't like Facebook, but just 'cause the more competition the better product/service the eventual winner will be.
