Always Sunny is a show that I never go out of the way to watch, but whenever it comes on and I watch it I always immensely enjoy it.
If you haven't watched all of Futurama, it's all definitely worth it as well!

Watch it high. I always hated this show until I had. It's hilarious, you just have to be. it's hard to explain
Seinfeld is also very excellent.
Misfits is also super popular now for a really good reason. Game of thrones, the second season is coming out soon. Haven't seen all of the first season, just like four random episodes, have read the book though, fucking fantastic story. The show could be awful and it'd still be worthwhile the story is so good.
Arrested development also good.

Parks and Recreation - one of the best "new" comedies, similar to the Office in many ways but the characters are much more stylized. Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) never ceases to perform, hilarity ensues
30 Rock - not very oldie but still a goodie, Liz Lemon and her rag-tag bunch of corporate television coworkers always succeed in making me laugh. the jokes are sometimes low-brow but the show hits a chord with the kinda-sorta self-loathing, literate, 20/30-something crowd as well. each character is overly stylized which makes for some great jokes, but if you are looking for meaningful character development or catharsis, look elsewhere
How I Met Your Mother - kinda like Friends but isn't nearly as lame, this would take a while to catch up on due to there being seven seasons, but definitely worth it. will resist the urge to make a LEGENDARY joke
Doctor Who - one of my top five favorite shows. every few seasons "The Doctor," a space-and-time traveling TIME LORD is reincarnated into a new form, travels with plucky female companion. the humor is usually spot on and the plots are most definitely interesting. I think Steven Moffat (director) is taking this show in a good direction
Breaking Bad - was previously one of my top five shows but has really lost itself recently (IMO), the short of it: high school chemistry teacher falls upon hard times and is forced to assume unsavory employment to secure his family's financial future. the action and plot lines are definitely interesting and action-packed at times, and the acting is usually phenomenal, but Skylar White is a huge bitch
Battlestar Galactica - tied with two other shows for my top three; this show really takes the whole spacey action-drama thing to a new level. background: man(kind) creates the Cylons, a race of servant robots with artificial intelligent who continue on an unexpected evolutionary path, find god, and seek revenge on their creators. calamity ensues and humanity is forced to the brink of extinction. each character in the series undergoes palpable character development as we see their lives crumble around them (more than a few scenes made me cry, going to have to admit that).
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - the second of my top three, if you think Buffy is anything like Twilight you are sorely mistaken. Sarah Michelle Geller assumes the role of Buffy, a teenage girl who finds herself with ~mystical~ powers and forced to fight the power of darkness, all while looking pretty smokin' hot and summoning a latent ability for cutting quips, she's what you would call pun-alicious if that were a word. like BSG, each character in Buffy goes through (sometimes heart-rending) character development. each season is relatively fast-paced and I doubt you would lose interest.
Angel - the final of my top three, Angel is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off that takes a different approach to fighting against the supernatural haunting sunny (unfortunate for vampires) CA. I loved each and every one of the characters dearly and cried each time one met an unfortunate end. each season's plot seems incredibly real despite its basis in the absurd. Joss Whedon has a knack for making you fall in love with characters no matter how much they might push against it.
Other notables: Dollhouse, Firefly (& Serenity), Nikita, Arrested Development, Dead Like Me, Fringe, Supernatural, and Veronica Mars

I appreciate this thread. I haven't watched network or cable TV since I moved out umm... 8 years ago. I watch everything online so I don't always hear about some of these good shows.

Leverage and House get somewhat repetative at times so i guess those would be the worst on the list, but overall i think they are all quality tv shows worth your time.

true blood is a fun show to watch if you're into trashy vampire romance and lots of obligatory gore and tits
as for hbo series that are actually good, there's the tudors (ended, but reruns shouldn't be hard to find), game of thrones, and boardwalk empire
then there's the Beavis and Butt-head revival where MTV pokes fun of it's own reality shows and Mike Judge goes between delivering enlightening social commentary and random shit he came up with while baked

The old episodes were actually really bad, basically because the writers and artists were still in their Beevis and Butthead stage and didn't know what to do with the characters, plus the writing was just really bad.
After the show developed it got hella better, especially the last few seasons.
I'll admit, it still requires a certain humor to enjoy it since the humor is pretty dry or implied, and not in-your-face-here's-where-the-humor-is of Family Guy, etc.
My favorite shows that are still on atm:
Glee - /me too Gleek
Futurama - still one of the best, if not the best, animated shows ever created and the humor is just amazing. The story is also great and allows for a lot of show variance, which is always nice. I've definitely seen every episode at least 20 times, mostly because Adult Swim played through the seasons so much after it got canceled, and then Comedy Central picked it back up again.
NCIS - Yeah I know a cop drama, but NCIS is just so much better than most of the other cop ones, especially Law and Order and CSI; the lower amount of cast and the length they've been on the show really gets you attached. Pauly Perrette and Mark Harmon are just amazing in this show, with Abby probably being one of my favorite characters on TV ever. It's also easy to get into the show, you could start watching episodes on TV right now and figure out what's going on even though the story is constantly progressing.
Spongebob and Adventure Time - Best. Cartoons. Ever.
EDIT: Big Bang Theory - absolutely amazing writing and cast, definitely one of the shows you need to watch at least once.
