Official MLB 2012 Season Thread

How about those Washington Nationals! A sweep of the first-place-for-a-second Atlanta Braves, and UNCONTESTEDLY THE BEST PITCHING IN THE LEAGUE. If you disagree, go to baseball reference and look at the stats. If you still disagree then you are wrong. Yes, Henry Rodriguez does lead the league in WP, but other than that, the pitching has been supreme. When Michael Morse gets back to DH against Boston, (provided the Nats don't swoon in Miami and in their upcoming series against the Braves) they are looking to be the team to beat in interleague play. I love it when people beat the Red Sox or the Yankees. It warms my heart. Especially Tampa Bay.

until they shut down Strasburg.

but seriously, Gio Gonzalez has been a monster. 12k per 9, 3 bb/9. goes to show how much of a joke the NL is compared to AL (plus probably some natural development). and here i thought the Nats would have meh starting pitching outside of Gio and Strasburg. still, Detwiler and Zimmermann have been pitching over their heads, so i expect some regression.

either way, the Phillies' reign up top is done and i can fully expect the Nats to be in the hunt. all those years of top 5 picks, finally paying off.

You'd think that regression kills the chances at the NL East, just because they aren't hitting nearly well enough. The Braves are a much better all around team. Either way, they've got a decent shot at one of the two WC spots.

might as well have designated fielders too amirite, make it more like football with separate offense and defense

This is also heavily supported by the fact that 4 of the past 6 World Series winners are National League teams, including the last two. Yeah, the MLB sure is dominated by the AL.

The NL is just very top heavy. Very often you'll see the worst few teams in the league reside in the NL even if there are some awesome ones at the top.

Edit: Not to mention that the good teams in the AL all beat up on each other in the playoffs!

Speaking of which the Braves are on a 1-9 run in the last ten games. From first to worst in under two weeks.

The only edge the AL has is that great hitters could be enticed to go there to extend their careers past the point they would have become a defensive liability. Whether this holds true in practice I don't know. In theory the best pitchers could gravitate towards the NL so they don't have to face the DH.

The NL also entices older fielders with diminishing bats thanks to double switches...

And the AL has seen a diminishing role of the "True DH." The only ones I can see are Dunn and Ortiz. (and Manny when he's unbanned...) Most teams use the DH as an off day for their fielders and superstars. Many old players are being signed more frequently by the NL for pinch hit duties, like Giambi and Thome...

The Reds have a better record than the Cardinals.

Yet Sports Illustrated's power rankings have the Reds 16th and the Cardinals top 5.

Wat.

Dat bias

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/history/interleague/records.jsp

see: interleague records for the past 8 years.

1 series does not tell the whole truth. since 2004, the AL has gone 1104 - 910 in interleague play for a .548 winning percentage.

AL >> NL. but in a 7 game series, all bets are off.

thank you god aamto i was just about to post that.

i don't even know why i read this thread almost no one has any idea what they are talking about

While I find this particular example rather egregious, not just from my Reds bias but the fact that the Reds have been able to keep up at all (what with their horrible offense and the Cards starting off ridiculously hot), power rankings aren't merely a ranking of teams by W-L record. That's what the official standings are for.

That doesn't justify the fact that a team with a better record is over ten spots behind. Last week the Reds raped the Yankees and Braves for god sakes.

A part of everyone just wants the Mariners to lose because, well, it's the Mariners. To get their offensive outpouring and still lose for a team that never scores would be so enjoyable.

So there goes the greatest comeback of all time.

Seahawks 21
Cowboys 8

But at least you guys still have a better record than the Reds.

Unless your name is the LA Dodgers, we still have a better record then every team lol.

Also I'm getting raped by the massive penis of the DL in fantasy baseball. I've had 6 players injured over the past two/three weeks, and five currently on the DL now (dropped Vance Worley, and will be four once Doug Fister leaves my team). Yet I'm still in first. The gods are trying to do everything to change that though!
