Official MLB 2012 Season Thread

sorry J7r but he's pretty spot on with the pitching information, thats all spread to become leaguewide only in the past 3-4. matt and I have talked about it at length, but all the steroids shit is crap, and there is statistical evidence to prove it.

That's pretty interesting. Maybe I did put too much emphasis on (possibly) lower steroid use, but you must admit it is a very stunning coincidence. But I wasn't really talking about home run/power numbers, I was referring to the recent surge of no-hitters and perfect games. The article you linked to was a very good read, but I didn't see a section relevant to pitching other than "steroids have little to no impact on pitching performance", which doesn't answer my question.

And he wasn't "spot on", he listed three things of which two have already existed for a very long time. Specialty relievers and advanced data/film on hitters has been available for a really long time no matter how you look at it >_>. Sabermetrics are not a new advancement, nor are they powerful enough to pin the recent surge of no-hitters on them.

ps. R.A Dickey as a fluke is hurtful to the man who's put up good-great numbers for 3 years anyways. Piecing things together seems pretty believable. Not 2 ERA, but he'll finish at around 2.5-3 and easily have CY consideration

I didn't say he was a bad pitcher, I said that a knuckleballer being a serious candidate for CY is flukish. He's been ridiculously good but I am more interested in how he pitches come late August when his team is likely out of contention if recent history is anything to go on. Although come to think of it, that second wild card seems to be tailor-made for the Mets...

@Stall: We are kind of spread out in groups here in fantasy. I mean, you and DP are literally the only two who really have a chance of winning with a 16 point gap over me and pookar in third and fourth. Then you got another gap and a spread out race between drcossack, arena, spics, and White Guy Stoners. Then you got the two people who I think quit at the bottom of the pile...

Pretty much, I don't see anyone shifting groups all too much.

And Stall, I'm only .001 points away from 1st in average with 5 other second places. You can't say that I'm not trying my hardest to break up you two guy's 10 point monopoly...

@Dickey Comments: I'm predicting him to finish just a little better than Wake in '95. The knuckleball is so hit and miss on any given start that I don't think that this will hold up much longer than it has already. Maybe he will finish with a 2.8ish ERA with maybe 18 wins and second/third in the CYA? And that's if he's not traded to the AL, as I still think the Mets will be looking to rebuild for the future at the deadline.

But hell, I'm pulling for the guy to win so I'd love to be proven wrong. :D

Yeah I know haha. Beltre is a .300 hitter every year and with power so he should not only get you in the race by upping your HR and RBI but hopefully get you ahead of Disposable Puppets in average. I'm rooting for you there! Myself, I'm offering one of my relief pitchers possibly for an above average (but not elite dw) starter so that I can get up there in wins and someone else can catch up in saves!

Just so you know, if I beat out DP in average, I'll be sure to get you in runs, as I'm only 3 off. I got to be fair to everyone. :D

And with Beltre, as a Red Sox fan I know exactly what he'll give me. Though Belt was only on the club for a year, what he did on that team under those conditions was spectacular. I was a little sad to have seen him and his one knee shots leave. The guy always gave all that he had for us even though we were completely out of it and really turned his career around in the process. It's just too bad his glove doesn't reflect in the fantasy standings. The only thing I worry about is his health and the fact I have to have him ride the utility spot. But yeah, I REALLY needed the power and RBI's over the runs and stolen bases. I also have some really cleaver pickups I might try in order to get some of Trout's numbers back, but that will have to wait until I can make a comeback in the pitching statistics. The loss of Weaver for 4 starts hurt me pretty bad and that damn Tim Lincecum keeps blasting my ERA numbers to timbucktoo...

I still have faith in the power of Bautista and Braun to keep me in the mix in the power numbers category. Been sketched about my SBs since I traded Gardner but he's injured so lol, really liking my pickup of Alejandro De Aza to help with the stolen bases and average issues. Speaking of issues I'm shopping Pedroia and Eric Hosmer, looking to pick up a second base/catcher/shortstop/starting pitcher or two for support. Speaking of pitching, Romero stop giving up runs ;_; you too Alvarez. Ugh, if Luebke would get off the DL I'd be so much happier.

RAYS CHEAT! RAYS CHEAT!
Rays pitching puts the "Devil" back in Devil Rays. No wonder their pitching is always so damn good. Joe Maddon and that bench coach with the beard last year should be banned for life.

(Oh yeah. Freddy Galvis suspended 50 games for PED usage. But the Rays still cheat.)

Reds sweep the Indians. Indians sweep the Reds. bleh

LOL umpires, safe at second because he "bobbled" the ball aka he moved his glove a little bit while holding onto the ball the entire time. ~_~

Tampa Bay's rookie Archer made his debut against the Nats. Gave up 2 ER on 3 hits in the first and gave up another run on an error. After that shakey start he went five more innings and went 0 H, 1 BB, 8 K. Gotta tip your hat to that.

No they haven't. What are you talking about? Never has there been a time where pitchers would enter a game, retire a batter, and then leave with a congratulatory pat on butt. Starters back in the day would pitch until they were no longer effective, and how many pitches they threw never dictated whether they would leave the game or not. Even when relievers came in, they would regularly go 3-4 innings at a time. How often do we get pitchers today asked to get any more than three outs? Go find me specialty relievers from the 70's and 80's (don't actually try it, because you can't do it). And when I say "back in the day" I'm not even going back 100 years. Pitch counts weren't a big deal until a decade or do ago.*

Easily accessible spray charts, heat zones, and pitch data have NOT been available for a long time. Today's technology allows us to break down the game into the barebones; to every pitch, every flight trajectory of a ball in play, every behavior of a ground ball, and while you had a general sense of which pitching and defensive methods were more effective against certain hitters, never before did you have a quantifiable statistic of just how effective they were. The vast amounts of defensive shifts we see in today's game have not been present until recently, and more emphasis has been placed on pitcher's being effective in short bursts.*

Besides, steroids and PED's aren't a new toy, and they aren't magical beans. Even with the alleged use of steroids (Bonds has never tested positive for the drug), he and the other poster boys for steroids, Arod et al, we're light years above everyone else. Did they have better steroids than everyone else? How come when Bonds was in Pittsburgh and Arod in Seattle, before the two were linked to any PED's, they were already Hall of Fame caliber players? Do steroids improve hand eye coordination, reaction time, swing mechanics, and pitch recognition (hint: it doesn't)? Those aspects are all far more important to hitting than raw strength. Just go look at all the names ever busted for PED's, and you'll see numerous slap hitters and career minor leaguers who never made a name for themselves with their production. Those types of players are in far more abundance than the Mark McGwires and Sammy Sosas of the world. *Besides, where was all the hoopla when folks like Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Mike Schmidt were pumping their bodies with amphetamines?*

Did they check him for pine tar after the first?

Nah, lol. The crew chief told both managers before the game that they wouldn't check anybody unless an umpire saw something suspicious. He also was on the field for practice. Peralta pitched a scoreless/hitless eight to chants of "check his glove." He was wearing a glove belonging to a player on the DL. Something must have been wrong with his glove. Funny since the one he had confiscated was supposedly his BP glove.

Wait, hold up. From the article I linked to before, I thought Joel was automatically suspended 10 games in addition to being thrown out of the ball game yesterday. I'm assuming he appealed it (which would be dumb as interleague is the best time outside of September to serve a suspension)? Or is the MLB waiting until after the glove is done being chemically analyzed by CSI: Cooperstown before passing down the sentence?

Unless, of course, there was a mistake and he legitimately feels there is reason to have his sentence reduced or eliminated. Maybe it was a drop of grape jelly from a PB&J he was enjoying in the clubhouse earlier or something. :doom:

why do you have a bunch of color tags in your post for the default text color

Kevin Youkilis got traded for to the White Sox for some project pitcher and a utility player today. Will edit in my thoughts when I acutally have them. Right now, I'm neutral as I don't know too much on Stewart and I don't know what other offers where on the table.

Eventual potential to be a mid-rotational guy no higher than a good #3, groundball guy who can strike an okay amount out. Stock has taken a bit of a hit, but it's wait and see. He was in the Jays system, and was part of the Rolen trade and Rasmus trade.

He's 25 and has never had an extended stay in the big leagues. That is NOT a #3 starter. His ceiling at this point is a #4/5 or setup man.

And also, TREVOR BAUER IS MAKING HIS MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT ON THURSDAY WHOOOOOOOOOOOO

Just picked him up in our fantasy league via waivers (thank god for people not following baseball this late), so sorry Stall & Co. If you guys want him, my asking price is Justin Verlander/Clayton Kershaw + Cash.

Thought about putting a claim in but decided I didnt really need it. If it was a keeper league I'd have been all over that shit but nah, AJ Burnett is a pretty safe play.

He would have been a pretty bad ass replacement to Beachy and would save you from spot starting with guys like Felix and Hammel.

I'm just kind of pissed drcossack stole Will Middlebrooks out of my grasp now that I could use him everyday instead of every third day. And I was getting caught up in my pitching numbers too. Damn... :/
