Media itt: movie/film discussion - Beware Spoilers

saw brave yesterday
it was ADORABLE and there were many good moments. the soundtrack is beautiful, too. still, some things about the film didn't really click for me; the overall plot was a little cliche and its resolution more so, but the message was good and the animation was pretty spectacular (especially the archery scenes). overall I wasn't as satisfied as I was after WALL-E or Up, but I didn't dislike it. 7/10

spiderman was alright - it was a spiderman film and had everything i expected from a spiderman film but i couldn't help but feel that they somewhat sacrificed the integrity of the individual film in an attempt to set up a trilogy...why oh why does every film need to be part of a goddamn trilogy these days? it could have been so much better but it looks as though they're saving some of the big storyline points that you may be expecting for the next film(s). they even create a 'non-canonical' storyline involving peter's parents but never bother to expand on it, relegating it to a post-credits scene. i left feeling as though i'd been for a meal, but wasn't served quite enough to fill me up, know what i mean?

don't get me wrong though, it was an enjoyable enough film. Andrew Garfield made a brilliant Peter Parker/Spiderman though, at times he showed the wise-cracking nature that Toby Maguire never quite had down, and seemed much more comfortable in the angsty, nerdy teenager role too. there were some great action scenes too...this spiderman displays much more agility than maguires, at times playing on the increasing popularity of parkour and the like. i saw it in 2D but there seemed to be enough obviously 3D set pieces in there to justify the extra few quid to see it in 3D if you're into that sorta thing.

overall it wasn't as good as the previous spiderman franchise's opener, but it was still good cinema fun provided you don't go in with your expectations set too high (hint: it's no avengers)

Pretty much how I feel about Brave.

On another note I also saw Madagascar 3, two for one deal. It actually was a pretty decent movie, Im loving Chantel DuBois, it was great to have a kick ass character in the series that's not a animal (outside of the old lady or course). Dat action scene when she chases them for the first time was perfect. The plot was ok, but the whole circus animal sob story mid was through was meh.

You probably see more afro circus on the commercials than in the actual movie BTW.

Cars 2, Brave, Monsters University. I think Pixar's best years are over (disclaimer, I haven't seen any of them, but maybe that supports my point).

Anyone watch Spider-Man? Is it worth it?

It's not Amazing, but pretty decent. If you're a Spidey-fan you'll enjoy it, if you don't, it's still enjoyable enough, but not essential to watch.

Oh, by the way, Rock of Ages sucks, unless you like musicals. Prometheus looks pretty cool, and is pretty cool in general.

People keep saying Pixar's best years are over but you guys know they can have different writers and directors on each film right? The guy who made Up is working on The Good Dinosaur now.

Prometheus is the worst film I've seen this year, but i'd recommend seeing it anyway just so you can laugh about how bad it is. it pains me to say it about a fellow geordie but ridley scott has totally lost the plot with this one. it seems as though the story was made up as they went along in order to accommodate as many gory monsters as possible, and the way in which they shamelessly tried to tie it in with Alien evoked a cringe from the entire cinema. it manages to capture a sense of intrigue and drama as they explore the mysterious planet and you do spend the whole time wondering what's gonna happen next. but at the end of the movie, once I found out what did happen, I just had to sit and wonder what the fuck i just watched.

I don't know I kinda liked Prometheus, but then again I am an action and scifi fan.

I have a theory that the planet was indeed a weapons testing planet like a few people said in the movie, and that they were using the weapons to combat the Predators, which now live in the same universe BTW. I think Earth was just a test planet so they could see the effects of there weapons on a live planet, without inciting war.

I also don't think these "original humans" or whatever you want to call them are dead either because I remember seeing one of their helmets in the Predator camp in Predators.

Isn't it meant to be a sort of prequel to the Alien-series? You are right in that it is more about the visual spectacle than about storytelling. There are quite a bunch of plotholes and inexplainable things in the movie.

But to call it the worst film this year? You must have missed Piranha 3DD.

I was left with the distinct impression that they just said that to give the film something to set itself apart and bring in more viewers. the only time alien is seen is virtually in the post credits and its appearance makes no sense at all, however you want to look at it. i tried going down scarfwynaut's route of theorizing potential plots and whatnot but in the end i decided i'm giving them way too much credit - it's a mindless action film that sacrifices the storyline to fit in a few more hollywood monsters and gory death scenes. it wasn't even close to being the deep scifi epic that the trailer and hype led me to believe.

i didn't see piranha 3DD but i imagine if i did, i would leave the cinema without feeling like i'd been deceived and tricked into seeing a movie which is how i felt after prometheus.

I disagree, I thought Prometheus was pretty good. If you didn't like it, I think it's more reflective of not liking movies in that genre than the fact that the movie was bad. Not as good as Alien imo, but still worth seeing and entertaining. Noomi Rapace is consistently awesome. I don't want to get too spoilery, but it gets really good around the halfway point when they cut out one of the bs characters.

That may be true, but that doesn't mean Piranha 3DD is worse than Prometheus in almost every single aspect. It seriously is a piece-of-shit movie with no quality at all.

And yet I must admit that I enjoyed watching it, since it falls into its whole own category of 'bad', an accomplishment in itself.

Prometheus was terrible. Plain and simple.

Ted on the other hand was fucking hysterical.

Is it good? I plan on going to see it with my boyfriend this Sunday, but I've heard some really mixed things and I worry that it'll be "Family Guy/American Dad/Cleveland Show: The Movie."

I saw Spiderman. Oddly easy to compare it to the original. It wasn't as good until the scene where Uncle Ben dies, then it was better.

What bugs me though is Gwen Stacy. Without bringing up looks, job, or what they do, how is she different from Mary Jane?

Went to go see Spider-Man today. I was really looking forward to it, but I kind of expected it to beart an amazing tier such as the Avengers. I was moderately disappointed by enjoyed the film nonetheless. I think Andrew Garfield played the role much better than Toby McGuire. I really enjoyed how the film was more true to the comic book series than the predecessor though found myself arguing with my cousins on how they think the first movies were the most untwined with the comics. I am thinkng that the sequel will be much better. Still a great movie.

Isn't she like a super hero herself.. or something? Either that or she dies. The biggest problem i have with it is that Emma could have easily played Mary instead since she looks hotter as a red head anyways.

Not going to see it. Just another High School movie to appeal to tweens in the vein of Twilight... First Class actually allowed adults to watch the movie.

This comparison is moronic. Sure First Class is a better movie (in that it's possibly the best superhero movie...) but you do know that the comics the original spiderman movie was based off of had him in high school too? And that Ultimate Spiderman is one of the best comics ever? As are several runs of the Teen Titans, the third Blue Beetle, and Young Justice is probably the best superhero show ever made.

Seriously you think preteen girls are the target audience here?

It clearly doesn't mean to attract anyone above the age of 17.
