2012 music

I suppose Gossamer is a more consistent album.

Also, the new Swans album. Words don't even... I don't know if it's the revitalization post-rock needed, but it definitely made Sigur Ros's album look like child's play. I'm planning on giving it a few more listens, but as it stands this might be my first perfectly rated album is quite a long time.

Just dled it today, only was able to give it one quick listen before I had to head to work, but initially impressions were pretty damn amazing.

It's such a beautifully dark album. Gave it another listen and it's just immaculate. I'm in complete love with the second side of this album, which I am assured is nothing short of perfection. Hopefully the first side will grow on me more.

I really like Swans...but I'm weary about this one. There's multiple 20+ minute songs, and I've always had trouble with songs like that. Cassandra Gemini and Echoes are the only ones (besides jazz and stuff) off the top of my head that I've ever thoroughly enjoyed. Godspeed You! Black Emperor isn't too shabby either...

EDIT: and 2112 to an extent but Rush is really meh for me

The first side can be a little daunting, yes. The 30 minute track for "The Seer" is quite an impressive journey, though. Once you finish that the rest of the album is surprisingly easy to digest for a post-rock / experimental album. The first side quite honestly is not the most accessible, and has extended periods of heavy dark folk vibes by itself. The second side, however, is like listening to Godspeed! if they did Dark Folk.

Now that sounds incredible. I'll start downloading it now then!

i thought the new Passion Pit was boring as shit.

i was going to listen to the new Swans today but then Evoken leaked and i made a new mix.

Hail Spirit Noir - Pneuma

This album came out in March but I only heard it today. Anyway, Hail Spirit Noir is a greek band who plays an interesting combination of black metal and psychedelic rock. The black metal riffs are played on an electric guitar but one with rather little distortion, making the black metal more subtle in this combination than one would think. Honestly, I'm not in love with this record, but the sound was so unique and cool that I figured I had to link it in the music thread. For sure a band to watch in the future. Overall: 3.5/5

Really? I can't get enough of it.

It seems I'm in the minority, which is interesting.

listened to it again today and it's not as bland as i remembered, but still doesn't have that "it" factor Manners does.

lol at chiller font.

but i'll check it out anyway.

hail spirit noir is pretty interesting bm. nowhere near as good as the likes of oranssi pazuzu but still pretty interesting.

the discussion here convinced me to get new swans despite having a few of their albums a while ago and not really liking them, and it was totally worth it.

I looked on what.cd and the newest Swans I saw was the 2010 album. Where can I get the new one?

Yea. I am completely positive no other album is going to do it for me like Swans' release did. I know I said Fiona Apple's release was far and above everything else this year, but I take that back. Swans' is just levels higher than anything else this year. It might be my favorite album of the 2010's so far.

@DM, the new Swans release comes out on the 28th. I'm sure you can fish around the internet to find it. It was a fairly easy search to get to it. I forgot where I found it but if you can't find it just message me.

both a live album and a studio album were released this year

also confirming that Swans is a life-changing band

So I've been giving the new Passion Pit a few more spins, and I've come to really appreciate the new lyrical direction. Unfortunately I still feel the same about the bland production and generally generic melodies.

I searched the thread and I couldn't find it so:

This is from Sound Storm's Immortalia, an album that I had no idea existed until very recently. It comes out on the 28th and if it's anything like this song, I will be picking it up. It's some pretty great symphonic metal IMO.
