Media Metalheads Thread III

Anyone have any recommendations for some instrumental stuff to listen to? I can never get homework done while listening to anything with vocals because I start following the lyrics and spacing out...

Narita by Riot is all that's coming to mind atm

Depending on what kind of music you're looking for, there's Pelican, which is similar to Neurosis or Isis; Karma to Burn, which I'd probably describe more as super-heavy rock; Bongripper, which is stoner doom; or Cloudkicker (like Deschain recommended), which is math metal.

I don't think Sunn 0))) is always instrumental, but I never notice the lyrics. But sometimes I space out when listening to Sunn 0))) anyway, and don't get any work done. lol

Thanks guys, I've been listening to your suggestions. The only instrumental tracks I've really listened to have been:

Lamb of God - The Passing

Arch Enemy - Enter the Machine

Alestorm (power metal yeah yeah I know) - No Quarter

Nightwish (can't stand this band aside from this song, not very metal at all) - Last of the Wilds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwES9M0isVM

These songs are all pretty mellow and melodic but I like them a lot. Thanks everyone for helping broaden my horizons though!

Without going into the details of current state of the band Queensryche too deep (basically there are two different bands currently playing under the name Queensryche, one with lead singer Geoff Tate and one with everyone else), the Tate lead Queensryche dropped a new album a while ago that blows massive dick, and everyone called it out for blowing massive dick. This all leads up to possibly the most hilarious contest of all time...

For something a tad more substantial, the new Antediluvian, Skagos and The Ocean have all hit my IPod, and I will edit in initial thoughts on all of them later.

Well it's been long enough that I think this deserves its own post now.

The Ocean - Pelagial: Despite The Ocean being a relatively well known band, this is my first actual time listening to them. A major gripe right away is the vocalist; the hardcore-ish vocals are fine, but the cleans actively annoy me. Another issue I have with this album is the production, it's just a tad too clean. I think the album would really benefit from a bit more punch in the heavy sections. The music is pretty well done progressive metal with a lot of lighter moments mixed in with the heavy stuff, so overall I enjoyed it, despite my complaints.
3.5/5

Skagos - Anarchic: Wow wasn't expecting this. a 67 minute long, 7 part album divided into either 2 or 3 songs depending on what you have (mine is a CD rip, which means 2 songs; parts I-IV and V-VII). The music here is epic and frankly gorgeous at times, and really needs to be heard to be believed. However, I didn't enjoy parts V-VII nearly as much as I did I-IV. I'm not sure if that's because they were weaker or I was simply exhausted by that point in the album, but I for sure thought the quality dipped in the second half. However, for those who are willing to put some patience into a record and reach outside of genre norms (there is much more non-black metal on this record than there is black metal) there is a lot that is worth something here.
4/5 (probably deserves a little lower than that but first half really impressed me)

Antediluvian - λόγος: Antediluvian makes my dick rock hard. I am a fanboy for this band, and this reviews will read as fanboyish, but I really don't care. Antediluvian's strength has always been their ability to craft seemingly endless barrages of death metal that on the surface just pass over as one big jumbled mess, but if one peers past the murky exterior they will see glimpses of traditional riffing and the whole song starts coming together. λόγος takes this to the next level. I'm not sure if it's just because the way I am listening to this release is a cassette tape rip, but λόγος is Antediluvian murkier than ever, especially with the vocals pushed even farther back in the mix. An even more challenging album than their last, this band continues to push the envelope.
4.5/5

Next up for me is Sodom's Epitome of Torture and the self titled debut of a french band by the name of Regarde Les Hommes Tomber.

one of my friends kept raving about burzum (first three albums) so i'm currently listening. goddamn... i can now understand what all the hype was about. for those who also haven't heard, i highly recommend all 3 of these:

Burzum (my favorite)
Det Som Engang Var
Hvis Lyset Tar Oss

I saw someone with a Hvis Lyset Tar Oss t-shirt at my job the other day and wasn't sure whether to think "hey, this guy has excellent taste in music" or "hey, this guy might be a neo-nazi." Burzum kinds does that, considering Varg Vikernes might be one of the worst scumbags to ever walk the earth. Anecdotally, I also saw someone in a Suicidal Tendencies t-shirt as well, good day for metal tees.

speaking of t-shirts i got a slayer one for my bday! it's p cool

also yeah vikernes is a total psycho... first time i read about all the shit he's done i almost couldn't believe it lol

speaking of disbelief - tim lambesis hiring a hitman to kill his estranged wife??? can't say i expected it. (somewhat related, as i lay dying are one of the better metalcore bands)

i listened to dissection's reinkaos. i was very pleasantly surprised! recommend it to anyone who likes melodeath. hardcore dissection fans probably hate it because it's not ~black metal~ but that's their problem

things to listen to: converge - jane doe
