Media Metalheads Thread III

Haven't seen anyone post about djent (bar meshugahh) yet so thought I'd post some. :) threw in some prog metal too or whatever you want to call it, I was never one for incredibly specific genres anyway

Couldn't find one of the songs ($) on youtube so figured his bandcamp sufficed: http://cloudkicker.bandcamp.com/track/--6

Nice! I like myslef some djent too as I happen to listen to it quite a lot....Here is some stuff I find interesting:

You really can't go wrong with Skyharbor....

Very catchy song and nice bridge in the middle into the "breakdown". For those who are saying this isn't djent, listen to around 2:20 afterwards, where the guitars are easier to hear

loving the fail emotions, I checked out some of their other things I listen to pretty much anything so the mix of techno/djent is a welcomed touch

Yeah, these guys are pretty sick. Although only their recent EP has djent elements, I really enjoyed the songs Makes Bad, Suit & Tie, and Shades from their first album Transfornations(I don't know if you have checked out those yet, but you should if you haven't yet).

Also, if you like the techno/trance and metal fusions, I suggest you check the bands that I posted on the first page of this thread, and on top of that the song Silent Descent-Breaking The Space.

Tbh I didn't really think about Periphery being djent till you posted and now that I listen to them I can definitely notice the djent elements. I'm still surprised that I didn't notice that!

Yeah they were the first djent band I listened too, 2 years ago my friend showed me the guitarist's (misha mansoor) solo project 'bulb' and it just clicked, a lot of the first album and 2nd album were originally done by misha under 'bulb' which was awesome cause I was never a fan of harsh vocals with a few exceptions so a hard metal sound with just instrumentals really got me further into metal and so I started to explore.

Misha's easily one of my favourite artists/producers he can pretty much do everything.

for anyone interested in his solo work he's got the nyan theme song, has a few guitar riffs, some trance/electronica he fooled around with and some of his earlier work here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=147108&content=music

and I couldn't resist separately linking this cover: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=8270397&q=hi&newref=1 Prelude Bombfare covered amazingly and does it justice I'm a huge Nobou Uematsu fan too.

the new CoB song is apparently out. i am in a frenzy searching for it. if you have it and post it here you'll have my full gratitude for about 20 minutes

This copy was aired in Finnish Radio a few hours ago as a part of the National promotional. Quality is a bit sketchy (Radio recording) but good enough till you get your hands on the real deal. It's a Torrent link though

the link can be streamed right now, but it won't finish uploading about an hour, so it might need to buffer and you can't download it yet.

also i totally didn't back announce that Crepuscule track. whoops.

EDIT: actually it's uploading REALLY slow. if it doesn't work by this evening try again tomorrow.

Honestly, I wasn't all that crazy about L'enfant Sauvage. It wasn't bad, but it just didn't compare to From Mars to Sirius or The Way of All Flesh.

Anyway, how about some Post-Metal?

Does anyone know of Vektor? I found out about them when they were touring with Municipal Waste, Exhumed, and Napalm Death. They're one of the lesser known bands, but seriously one of the better thrash metal bands out there (which is a real hit-and-miss genre in my book). The vocals and lyrics are simply amazing, and songs themselves are beyond unbelievable. Check 'em out.

i love me some post-metal.

Mouth of the Architect, Year of No Light, Kongh...lots of awesome bands out there. lots of mediocre and shitty ones too though, like any genre.

and Vektor is pretty well known. their black metal influence makes them tolerable to me, but i pretty much detest thrash.

I know 'From Mars to Sirius' is like a career peak for them.. like Thriller was for Michael Jackson. It will be hard for them to meet these expectations... again

Can you define 'post'-metal here... I never really got that... same for 'alternative'-metal. I mean Metal is a pretty alt genre already. What defines it?

Post-metal is a mixture between the genres of post-rock and heavy metal, with roots in progressive rock, progressive metal, shoegazing, and industrial music. It is broadly characterized by distorted guitar, heavy atmospherics, gradual evolution of song structure, and a minimal emphasis on vocals.

It's worth noting that many "post-metal" bands incorporate elements of sludge into their songs.

As for "alternative-metal", I always just thought that genre was mostly the shitty commercialized "metal bands" that your average person would call "metal".

saying something is "metal" is hardly a good way to describe a band to someone.

post-metal has become a mixture of post-rock and doom/sludge over the years, with longer more atmospheric songs that don't have a typical song structure and focus on crescendos much like post-rock does, but with the added heaviness of sludge/doom.

one of the progenitors of post-metal, Neurosis, actually began as a hardcore/punk band, so it's hard to say that post-rock+sludge/doom is where post-metal has its roots.

Things I have listened to recently:

Autumn Leaves - Embraced By The Absolute (melodic death). I had really high expectations for it, considering that their follow-up album, As Night Conquers Day , is, in my opinion, the best melodic death metal record of all time. Those high expectations have been met and then some... it's absolutely phenomenal. The album is best listened to in its entirety but check out "Blood" if you want to get a general idea of what it's like.

Gorguts - Obscura (tech death). It's bizarre in a way I can't describe... this is a good thing though, it's very interesting stuff and it goes without saying it's pretty ~brutal~ for guys who are into that sort of thing. The title track is my favorite song.

Amorphis - Tales From The Thousand Lakes (melodic death). It's heavily doom- and folk-influenced, neither of which which are really my sort of thing, but overall I like it. "Magic and Mayhem" is the song I liked the most.

Vinterland - Welcome My Last Chapter (melodic black). These guys certainly give Dissection a run for their money. "As I Behold the Dying Sun" in particular really stood out.

man i keep thinking "this poster has great taste" and then see that it's agonist oops go me.

post-metal is probably my favourite genre of anything tbh. i have been in love with mouth of the architect, sunpocrisy, isis, rosetta, intronaut, and many more great bands for a while now. mouth of the architect is particularly crushing.

Gave a few of the Post-Metal links a listen, and I actually rather enjoyed it. Not anything I'm jumping up and down over (I'm too much of a (BAN ME PLEASE) for catchy hooks), but something to look into.

yeah MotA is tops.

hooks, you say?

That was one of the links I clicked on earlier. I enjoyed it, but it didn't have anything I'd really consider as a hook... I could be spoiled having just watched all of Initial D lately though...

Here's some examples of solid hooks in my onion:

Anyone have any recommendations for some instrumental stuff to listen to? I can never get homework done while listening to anything with vocals because I start following the lyrics and spacing out...

fair enough, but they're different sorts of hooks.

the progression of the main riff throughout NOWTSH is catchy as fuck. every time it mutates i just go "FUCK YEAH THAT'S FUCKIN RIGHT" and it just gets better and better.

guess you need to put on a different set of ears between the two styles, they're very different.

instrumental metal?

try Cloudkicker and Shelter Red, and maybe the instrumental version of the first Periphery album.

Not metal, but I find E.S. Posthumus great for this sort of thing.

You may also find foreign language music works, I usually find the lyrics kind of blend in with the instruments when I don't understand the individual words (so perhaps Heidevolk would be worth a listen).
