maybe they weren't confident in his abilities or maybe they took a gamble on a newcomer but obviously it ended up not paying off

It's more like a 99/1. Lucky practices year round against a vastly superior smiters than Cyanide like Lovelin and Illusion. 15-25 minute Barons are standard fare in China, Chinese shoutcasters just shrug it off like nothing when an early Baron happens. Even if they're not as good as, say, Diamondprox or Bengi when it comes to making big plays out of nowhere, Chinese junglers are absurd when it comes to Smite mechanics due to the fast paced high risk nature of the meta.
