Eating our words: Our opinions of XY then and now

When Pokemon X and Pokemon Y were first revealed, we were all extremely excited. The prospect of a new generation with 3D graphics, new Pokemon, and a new region seemed amazing! However, as more information was revealed, some naysayers started to show skepticism. Many new features such as the Fairy Type, Mega Evolutions, the starters, and some of the new Pokemon were met with a lot of negative feedback.

However, when the games were finally released in October, I couldn't find a single negative comment about most of the features we were so worried about; in fact we absolutely love most of the Mega Evos, Fairies, and new Pokemon!

What were some things that you thought you wouldn't like about the game but ended up loving? Were you proven wrong about some features in X/Y?

Well, this isn't about when I first got the games, but when it was announced that Pokémon X and Y would be in 3D and I saw the first trailer I absolutely hated the graphics! I though Pokémon was better suited for 2D. Never have I been so wrong! I find every aspect of the game to be aesthetically stunning!

I really hated the idea of Mega Evolution at first, mostly because I hate power creep in general. But with the restriction they put on it I think it's an awesome addition to the game. I've been having a wonderful time with Seismic Toss Kangaskhan-M on Pokébank OU. I was never bothered by the addition of the Fairy type (at least it's not the "light" type, lol) but I am disappointed with how underwhelming most of them seem to be.

I too hated the idea of brining Pokémon into 3D. When B/W came out I thought it was awesome that the monsters finally moved and seemed like a good compromise to those who wanted 3D Pokémon. But also like you I eventually saw the game in person and it looks absolutely amazing. B/W now look ancient in comparison. Similarly I want to cries to retain the gameboy sound quality they've always had; I can't stand encountering Pikachu and hearing his anime cry, so I'm glad they didn't do that for all of them.

At first, I too hated MEvos, since the first one ever released was MegaTwoY, I believe, and it seemed way too overkill. The only 'sub-par' Pokémon that got MEvos were Mawile, Bannette, and Kangaskhan, and the MEvos really made them a lot better. I have to say though, MEvos really warmed up on me, but I still think the 'rumoured' Mega L@tis look horrible. :I

I have mixed opinions.

At first, I thought that Mega Evos were kinda meh. But then I saw that Mawile, Kangaskhan, and a lot of other meh mons got upgrades, and I got excited. And then I saw that only Blaziken got a MEvo other than the original three and was a bit miffed. If they release the MEvos for the others, then it's fine, but if they don't...

I loved the graphics, it was something I really looked forward to. And most are great. But some mons look boring compared to their sprite forms.

I saw the legendaries, and was hoping that there would be some great story behind them. And there was...sort of. Certainly not the epic storyline that was BW/BW2.

I was a bit ambivalent to the game, really, not many strong opinions. But Super Training, Amie, breeding changes... all were amazing. The redesigned type chart... mostly ok, as was the new changes to the Grass/Electric type. But no changes to the Ice type? Why.

I was really looking forward to the Endgame, but there's barely any of it, so that's a bit of a letdown. Breeding/training for the BS though is very fun.

All in all, I liked XY. But I'm really hoping for more MEvos, especially for the starters, or for sucky mons like Farfetch'd to make Pokemon overall more balanced.

Well, when I saw the first screens, I thought they didn't look great, but now I think the actual graphics look pretty good! Not sure how much this is a change in my opinions, or in the actual graphics. If you compare the earliest screenshots, they do look much less "lush" and detailed.

I originally thought that Mega Evolutions were going to be a big gimmick just to attract old fans back to the series. But they've generally turned out to be pretty awesome.

The breeding, exp share, and super training advancements have made the game way more accessible for someone who has limited time.

The story was pretty crap, but I'm most disappointed with the post game and content and how many other pokemon need mega Evolutions as well.

With all the emphasis on 3D in advertising, I was disappointed that 90% of the game ended up being the same old grid-based pseudo-3D. At least 8-direction movement is a step up.

Also, the 3DS's signature sterescopic 3D effect was not utilized for most places in the game. I never liked the effect anyway, but it feels like a half-ass job by the developers to use it in one or two places and ignore it everywhere else.

Edit: I know I sound real negative here, but XY is still my favourite pokemon game.

The 3DS just can't handle rendering 3D outside of the small areas like caves. Same reason why it works for single battles but not triple, which even gets a bit laggy in 2D

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think there's been bigger things rendered in 3D in other games like Mario 3D Land?

Yep, but then again Game Freak isn't exactly known for their stellar programming skills.

Still, I find it impressive that they managed to do as much as they did.

Just my opinion, when I saw that we were going to be able to ride pokemon in this game I was super siked and was like I'm going to ride a venasaur around Kalos but then after finding out I could only ride a rhyhorn in one route, Mamoswine in one route, and skiddo in a farm(I don't even consider Gogoat to count we couldn't even control him) i was sort of underwhelmed. I hope that they add on to this in later games and that they were just testing the water here. at least have more routes, or more pokemon to ride, make it like a bike, just general stuff like that

THIS. I was so excited for riding, I'd wanted to be able to ride my Pokemon since gen 1. I hope they expand it in the sequel.

When Mega Evos were first revealed I thought they were incredibly stupid. Today... I still don't like them, but I hate them less I guess. It makes me sad how strong some of them are. I will not be surprised if Mega Gengar and Mega Kangaskhan get banned from OU, but it's a shame because those are two designs I actually liked. I really don't like most mega designs... I was hopeful when they first came out that they'd be given to weaker Pokemon that needed them, but instead they're overwhelmingly for popular Pokemon. The saddest part is that Tyranitar and Garchomp got megas (they did NOT need them) but Metagross didn't even get one!

I think I was actually let down by most pre-release features. The best things about X and Y are the things they didn't reveal ahead of time, like the new breeding mechanics, shinies, friend safari, Hawlucha...

I absolutely LOATHED MEvos for the first 24 hours or so after their reveal, but that was when I thought they were permanent (which everyone should know they aren't). After the details leaked out, I've softened up to them a LOT more.

But still, you have to admit some of them seem really OP, ESPECIALLY both MegaMewtwos.

Car keys? Way to dig deep. A sword pokemon? How original. Basically, I thought every new Pokemon was thoroughly ridiculous. But, they've grown on me and I'm breeding for a perfect "sword pokemon" as I type.

Mega Evolutions and Fairy types based off of cotton candy and perfume made me think I was going to quit Pokemon... I still don't know why I couldn't resist. Now, the only new things that really bother me are Amaura, Slurpuff, Amaura, Binacle, and Amaura. Did I mention Amaura? It looks like something from My Little Pony. (Guess what I got sick of for being all over the internet.)

The lack of RNG abuse made me wary at first but beyond soft resetting for a Xerneas for several days, collecting is actually fun now and there's a real trading community again. It takes way more time to get perfect mons now but it's nowhere near as bad as I feared and EV training taking about 10 minutes total makes it way better. It's probably going to be less pronounced once Pokebank comes out and people get their abused stuff again but it was fun while it lasted. Vivillion was also a great idea to get people to interact with each other when people aren't asking for Articunos and Yveltals for Scatterbugs.

I still hate the "updated" cries.

Major, major thumbs down for Gamefreak's negligence in regards to the major bugs and exploits.

I've spent like 250 play hours on X without touching my copy of Y so I'd say I like it.

While I don't know about RNG'd Pokemon, I do know that any hacked Pokemon can't be transferred through PokeBank. Since a lot of people had to use a small hack on their cartridges to start the RNG process, their games won't even be compatible with PokeBank. I'm sure people are going to hate this.

What the hell are you talking about? RNG abused Pokemon are not hacks and do not use any sort of hacking in their process, even Gamefreak and TPCi agree that they are legal when they officially allowed them in VGCs. It would be hacking if RNG Reporter actually generated the Pokemon or had any sort of interaction with the game.

I love the new games for what they are. I love the new look and i love how I won't be facing anymore hacked pokemon ever again.

But too many of the same old problems still exist. Can't nickname you're own transferred pokemon. Terribly designed final evos that have really interesting and completely useless pre-evos. Worthless pokemon like dedenne. Ridiculously easy difficulty level.

I am raising one 6th gen pokemon. One. That's it. One yveltal. The final evo designs were atrocious. Man I wish I could use phantump for something.

Thats not what I meant. When you RNG, most people need to see their secret ID to start the process. Since a lot of people save after hacking their cartridges to get their secret ID, the game becomes marked and thus said games can't use PokeBank.

I know the act of RNGing itself is not hacking but you usually have to hack your game to start it.

Uh, I never hacked my cart to find my SID. I used Pokecheck, which is a spoof GTS server but doesn't involve the use of external devices other than accessing the site via your computer. Nothing on the game cart itself was modified. There are also other ways to find your SID without "hacking", iirc there was a way to calculate SID from shinies you already had in gen 4. As for the "game becomes marked" part, Pokebank isn't even out yet and I doubt you are a software expert so I'm not sure how you can make that judgement. I RNG abuse and used Pokecheck extensively and none of my carts were ever flagged for anything fishy at official tournaments because I obtained my Pokemon legitimately.
