No new moves, period.
1) It never happens in the middle of a generation.
2) A bunch of "event exclusive" moves were hidden in XY's game files. If GameFreak had planned to add any moves later as patches, DLC or other forms of data transfer, this would have been unnecessary. And believe me, such things are planned way in advance. There would have been plenty of times to add those moves to the "Hidden content" of XY, thus eliminating the need for patches.

I say again, I'll wager my profile pic on this. If we see any entirely new moves, Abilities or Pokémon species in ORAS, I'll change my picture into that of a codfish.

This kind of sounds to me like what you were saying when the news of ORAS broke, about how there would be no new Mega Evolutions...

I don't particularly care about new moves one way or the other, so while I'll take the role of devil's advocate here, I don't think they're going to play Gen VI the same way as any prior generation, for reasons the I've explained before. Anyway, it seems to me that the hidden moves, which are not just "event exclusive" moves, but in fact the signature moves of "event exclusive" pokemon, and thus, are only included in the data because they are. The Thousand moves are where my argument falls apart, in large part because there's no definite pokemon to tie them to. It's largely speculated that they will belong to Zygarde, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything; they could belong to Kyogre and Groudon, for all we know. That's where my argument falters, because not enough information is known about them. It seems to me that they could have just been included as a red herring, to make us chase our tails in circles, trying to figure out what they mean.

So, while all of the hidden moves may or may not have relevance to Events, as signature moves or not, Kyogre and Groudon will not be event legendaries, and so there would be no need to preemptively include hidden moves for them in X and Y. I do know, however, that Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza are the highest tiered legendaries who lack signature moves of their own, and who's abilities, which formerly set them apart from almost every other legendary, are no longer unique to them, and have in fact been downgraded. If anything were to be given new moves mid-generation, it would be they, and as I've pointed out before, GF doesn't have to play by same rules as they had to in the past.

Unfortunately, this theory kind of falls apart when you consider that Thousand Waves is a physical ground-type move. The names would otherwise fit perfectly for the Ruby and Sapphire legends, albeit a bit weak in base power.

At this point, I think it's foolish for anyone to dismiss the possibility of new moves midgen. We already have new Megas and Corocoro is hinting that Ancient Groudon/Kyogre are using new moves; with Internet patches anything is possible. Let's see what happens!

I'm not the only one who noticed that Mega Swampert and Mega Sceptile are like the perfect Kyogre partners, right?

Maybe they'll get Sun-based Mega Evolutions, too.
I could picture them making version exclusives like that. Would be quite fitting imo.

Ah, sorry, I kind of pointed that out in an earlier draft, but changed it into a "For All We Know" kind of thing, and then didn't dispute it myself. I don't have a strong argument for the Thousand moves, and I'm honestly leaning towards the red herring theory, and may just be cynical enough to say that they'll be akin to the Azure Flute and Cacophony, and just not be used (not that I believe that...). Anyway, my point wasn't to say that Kyogre and Groudon would get them, but to say that they could, for all that we currently know about the moves, or more specifically, who can actually learn them.

Swords Dance boosted AJ while in Torrent range is pretty potent (especially if you have Rain up).
Wasn't saying that Feraligatr or Samurott were bad (they aren't at all). Feraligatr is a nice user of Swords Dance and Dragon Dance, while Samurott can effectively run mixed and special sets and has Knock Off and Megahorn.

To not derail the thread, what are everybody's hopes for move tutors? I mainly just need the Elemental Punches (they're gonna be there without question), Knock Off (Greninja pls! :D), Drain Punch, Dragon Pulse, Pain Split, Giga Drain (for Goodra maybe?), Iron Tail (Dark + Fairy + Steel coverage for Absol and Mightydoge), Iron Head, Foul Play, Outrage, Stealth Rock, Aqua Tail, Heal Bell, Earth Power and Signal Beam from the past, plus maybe Work Up, Defog, and Play Rough.

Hyper Voice and Drain Punch I'd like to see make a return one day. Especially so I can use my Kalos born Gardevoir effectively. :>

I'd hope for softboiled to return from gen3 with more pokemon able to get it(like snorlax and swalot). And why Iron Tail instead of Iron Head?

This, and I hope we don't have to go through great lengts to get them. I didn't particularly like getting moves for my Jirachi back in white 2.

I haven't ever actually posted around on Smogon that much. So I don't know if what I'm about to say will make me "one of those guys" that everyone will now get upset at.... But I kind of don't want Stealth Rocks to come back as a move tutor move. I really want it to just die out. Its my least favorite move in the game. Am I not allowed to say that though? lol, seems like the kind of thing a lot of people will jump on...

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion as long as it's not offensive and respectful.

As for SR, I wouldn't mind it either way. It's gotten to the point where it's a staple of the metagame, but not so much in-game. The competitive scene would change greatly depending on what gets SR and well distributed it is, but change isn't always a bad thing. In-game, SR kind of is useless so for the intents and purposes of the Orange Islands SR distribution really doesn't matter much to me.

i agree with you, but i think you're right that a lot of people are pretty polarised on the issue.
i really wished that they just reduced the damage by half (so 25% for something 2x weak to rock) or just made it do a set amount of damage regardless of typing.
i think as a move, it's really good for discouraging switches or benefiting by doing passive damage if your opponent switches a lot. plus it helps counter a few things like sturdy, focus sash (which used to be a big problem), and new things like multiscale

Much as I agree with you, Stealth Rocks not being a move tutor move in ORAS would not change the current competitive community at all. Pokémon would still be Pokégen'd and Showdown'd with the move as they are today.
I'd really like to see Seismic Toss return as a move tutor move. It's fantastic that Chansey got it as an egg move this gen; but I'd love it for other walls such as Registeel.

Wow, I have a lot to add about my feelings on Stealth Rocks, and I'm glad to get support but I think this isn't the place, right? As much as I want to chime in, this thread is for Omega/Alpha and not really for our dislike of move that's been around for half the game now. I mostly just said that becasue the Move Tutor question was posed.

And yeah Kurona you're correct. But if you play the game at all on formats like PSS, keeping Stealth Rocks out of the move tutor list means it shows up a lot lot lot less in the average battle. Especially since if it were cut from the list this gen anything with Rocks tutored on would have been born in a Gen were 5IV passing wasn't possible.

The guy above does bring up an interesting point; if he's wrong, where WOULD you get the starter's mega stone? Granite Cave? Roxanne? Mt. Pyre? Personally, my money's on Steven giving you it mid-game.

Steven giving it to you definitely seems likely. The other locations seem like prime spots for post-game Mega Stones like in XY, though. It doesn't make sense to me that you would get a Mega Stone as soon as you get your starter – even in XY, where Mega Evolution was really central to the plot and was mentioned from the beginning, you didn't get it right at the start.

Steven sees you in in Granite Cave, Route 118 and 120 before the final stages of the game. Don't think he gives you anything on Route 118 so it could be then. Means 4 badges and later than XY and should have a starter ready to Mega Evolve. Granite Cave is too early and Route 120 you get the Scope to see Keckleon

Obviously if there are more Megas some will be version exclusive. And any new Megas are gonna be Alpha/Omega exclusive (not in X/Y) I wonder if any already existing Mega stones will be "non-obtainable without trading" in ORAS?
