Unpopular opinions

I don't like any of the cries really, they have always sounded distorted and weird to me. In every generation (4th, 5th, and 6th.) I've played, I just don't think they do a good job with them.

Kricketune's best part was his original cry. I mean look at this comic

Oh, speaking of cries and unpopular opinions, I don't know how much of an unpopular opinion it is, but I honestly hate like most of the new cries they gave the Pokemon in Gen 6. ESPECIALLY the Pokemon from Gen IV and V. They ruined all the class and sass those cries had. Like Kricketune's is nowhere near as cool as it used to be.
Kricketune's cry sounds nearly identical to me. I do love that cry and it was one of my first ever evolved Pokémon, so that just adds a lot to me.

It changed ever so slightly. It sounds smoother than the original cry in my opinion. Another one that got changed that I really dislike now is Manaphy. It doesn't have the same sort of being underwater feel than the original has.

Wait! They changed Kricketune's cry? How could they?! That cry is classic!!!

New opinion: I liked the older artwork next to the Strategy Pokédex, Simulator, and Forum links better than the current ones with Mega Scizor, CharX, and Gallade, which I only found out replaced the last ones yesterday. The one with Thundurus, Ferrothorn, and I've already forgotten the one above those.

I thought they had such dynamic poses, and I always liked seeing them since before I joined this forum, every time I'd use the forum to research and make a moveset for a new Pokémon.

BTW I was not being mean, it's just that a couple of pages ago people where talking about how the game made stuff to easy, adding scalating moves or retyping a normal move into one that is able to be spread among early mons would eradicate any sense of difficulty caused by bad match ups, which is pretty much the only "hard part" left on the games, just remember how easy the game feels with early rock smash on mienfo in XY or return in BW, it's potentially game breaking with little investment.

The badge system that was proposed although innovative just doesn't toggle with the concept of a move itself as badges boosting stats was seemingly abandoned post generation 1 if I recall. Innovation for the sake of innovation can potentially go into they improved it so much it's now forced down our throats territory wich may defeat the purpose of HM on itself and even limit team exploration more.

Even when not using super effective moves I usually knock out trainers with one or two hits. Also not every Pokemon would be able to take advantage of being able to learn certain HMs due to stat focus (doubt a wall or Special attacker would care about Cut or Strength). And as I said for the most part the way I scaled it would make is useful in the beginning but weak by the end point of the game with post game making it useful again (only reason you'll keep it would maybe be for type coverage). Honestly it's the trainers themselves they need to make harder.

And it's not innovation just for innovation. Actually the badge system I sort of took out of context. I sort of grabbed it from my list of ideas how they could do a free range game where you could do the Gyms in any order. I thought it would be boring if that also meant you got HMs in the same order so I thought maybe you could also get the HMs in your own order as well to let players explore places earlier than others who got a different HM first. That presented the problem with the Move's power so the badge system was how I fixed it. So in that context it makes sense, though outside of it it doesn't since you get the HMs in a certain order and they rise in power accordingly. The type change was mainly because, my Arceus, 3 Normal-type moves and 4 Water-type moves are boring. It feels like there's no variety but to continue with the game (or make traveling around easier) you got to at least teach a majority of them to your Pokemon. When you get an HM it should be an exciting moment, but yet it doesn't feel like it since people look upon it as an obstacle just keeping them from going through the game. Think about the "dungeon items" in the Legend of Zelda, you need them to get through the dungeon but they also have utility to them which makes getting them feel exciting even if its just the boomerang, bow, or hookshot/clawshot which have been in most of the previous games.

Also no one is forcing you to use the moves. Like the Exp. Share, if you don't want to use the HM moves then don't. Get a HM Slave like previous generations. Also this would only effect HMs, other moves would be left alone so for the most part you'll probably won't even pay much attention to it. Though now I'm thinking maybe instead of giving it a set type maybe there would be a way to allow Normal-types become one of the user's type... thought for another time.

Honestly, this really is an unpopular opinion. I for one am very thankful that those sorts of things have been dropped from the games. Gen II's were even worse with the random badges giving boosts to attacking moves as well...

The Badges giving your Pokemon stat boosts was an odd choice. I think this was an attempt to give the Badges extra utility but I don't think it was the right kind. You want to feel like your Pokemon is getting stronger from your own work, not because you got a magical item. I guess you could compare it to my idea but I personally don't think that's fair as its only for a select few moves and the boosts aren't that significant.

"Linear" is becoming a dirty word in the games industry. A game being linear is not always a bad thing.

Nowadays when people hear "linear" games they probably are thinking about FFXIII or a campaign in an AAA shooter. However Gen V were very linear and those games came out good. Linear games tend to be games that focus on the story. Not saying they don't have fun gameplay, being a game that should be an obvious, but due to how linearity leads to more control over the story people expect the story to be the reason to keep them going through. If the story isn't good, no matter how good the gameplay is, there's no incentive to keep going since you don't really care what happens in the end. That's what linear has had been a bad word, there's been so many AAA games which were linear but poor story telling it makes those playing it feel like the game is keeping them from going out and doing what they want.

As I said before, I feel that baby Pokemon are the perfect additions to a game when you want to have X Pokemon in the game to appear early but want to keep the game balanced. It's why I liked Budew appearing in DPPt and Azurill appearing in B2W2 right around the beginning of the game before you get the first gym badges. The problem is when they become obviously just there as dex filler and never appearing as such. Most of the baby Pokemon felt that way but others have come out of that status (like Azurill).

I'm glad they're adding the Baby Pokemon into the wild as well, allows access to Pokemon normally kept for later on to be gotten earlier. Though I'd also like it if Baby Pokemon would maybe learn moves at later levels their evolutions wouldn't normally learn (especially those who you get from needing an Incense for).

The same can't be said for some of the new evolutions though. The megas are one thing (especially since they're all temporary, so I forgive the more complicated designs), but some of the Gen 4 evolutions have still to win me over. Especially Rhypherior, man he's ugly. I don't care how popular knock-off is, I won't give up evolite Rhydon without a fight!

In before Mega Rhyperior's Defense would be equal to or be more than Eviolite Rhydon. :P

Anyway I think one of the problems with the Gen IV evolutions I hear a lot of complaints about is that they look very bulky and have maybe a bit too much extra decorations. Also in terms of new Pokemon there was a lot of evolutions of previous Pokemon in Gen IV that many felt took away a spot for a completely new Pokemon.

Wait! They changed Kricketune's cry? How could they?! That cry is classic!!!

here's the original and here's as it is now (start at 0:14). From what it sounds like the beginning just isn't as loud as it used to.

New Unpopular Opinion: All this HM talk and gameply design brought me to the realization that I liked how you needed certain Badges before you could use a certain HM. "What? But why? It's so limiting" Actually no, if anything it gives you more choices. You see, previously when you needed the Badge you'd just be given the HM and be told to get the Badge to use it outside of battle. Annoying? Yes, but at least you still got the HM. Because the game designer want you progressing the game a certain way, now that you don't need Badges to use an HM, you won't get the HM until after you get the Badge the game designers want you to get. So eitherway you'll need to get a certain Badge to be able to use the HM! I'd rather have the HM and not be able to use it so I can at least teach it to my Pokemon for battle instead of not having it. DROP THE BASS, KRICKETUNE.

I agree, but keep in mind not every HM gets to be Surf (or Strength pre-Gen V). If the HM's going to be sitting in your Bag until you teach it to a weak mon whose sole purpose is to contain said moves, whose appearance in battle basically means something's gone horribly wrong, why even bother? Choice for the sake of choice is not always a good idea.

While you'll probably only teach your main battling Pokemon Surf, Waterfall, Strength, or Fly there are circumstances some other weaker HMs are useful. For example Cut is useful for whittling down a Pokemon's HP to capture them, Rock Smash's Fighting-type comes in handy for type coverage, and since the computer opponent rarely switches out Flash can really neuter the opponent's Pokemon used enough times. Yes its all situational, but if you're having a problem with a certain battle it could be the move that makes the different. You usually get the HM around the time you get the Badge for it anyway.

I almost never do use HM slaves, so I definitely know the usefulness of the lesser HMs, as it were. (Cut and Rock Smash really are clutch for captures. Still, if there's one HM I feel to truly be a wasted moveslot, it's Flash. Its accuracy is horrendous for a debuffing move, and it hasn't even been necessary (since some people only need that sliver of light to navigate caves, apparently). Frankly, Flash needs to go--it is literally an inferior Sand-Attack.

Then you will be happy to learn that Flash hasn't been an HM since Emerald!

Plus, to add on to what Pikachu315111 said, for the most part, like, Cut is only really REQUIRED after the gym battle allowing you to. You can use up a moveslot now, then when you get there, you can just delete Cut and be done with it. You'll be there just in time to replace it with a better move. Then when you need to go there again, you can just take an HM Slave for exploring. Most of the cases, you don't NEED the items off the beaten path for the storyline. Flash is a bit more annoying since you usually see it in Victory Road in the beginning after you would have liked to get rid of it, but one move really isn't that bad especially since the first three games had problems with good moves that were usable in game. Defog is easily unnecessary since it's only on two routes (after you get to Celestic Town you can then fly back to Canalave and delete it or just keep it since it's like Flash for the most part). The rest are extremely usable in the endgame especially after the Fly and Dive buff.

I will always, always, choose Ninetales over Arcanine. Ninetales is one of my favourite Pokemon, and despite the fact its movepool and stats really don't compare to Arcanine's I really feel like Arcanine unfairly gets all the hype. Ninetales' design is beautiful, it's shiny is amazing and it is honestly the deciding factor when I chose what games I play (E.g. HeartGold or SoulSilver). Sometimes I've even played through a little bit of SoulSilver to catch a Vulpix just so I can trade it to other games and use it there.

Gosh, I have a bit of an obsession with Ninetales. Oh well.

Not sure if this is really considered unpopular or not, I don't really hear much people talk about so it's an uncommon conversation for sure.
About the ORAS redesigns of May and Brendan along with trainer customization not being in ORAS.
I prefer Brendan and May's original RS's designs over their ORAS ones, they seem to be almost the exact same just slightly altered for whatever reason, specifically for brendan, I mean they shortened his pants and sleeves but that's about it. I'm also gonna miss the good 'ol "is that a hat or his hair?!" debate, (although to be quite frank I thought it was obvious that he was wearing a hat, then again the uncannonly smash brothers series depicts pikachu without only the headband part from emerald) the debate never went too far with anyone, and even though confirmed several times that it was a hat people still thought it was hair, the Pokemon Adventures manga even made a joke about the debate. Brendan has elf shoes, oddly recolored sideburns for hair, and a skin tight swimshirt? I think? Brendan's new design isn't really a problem and I prefer some aspects of the old one. May her self I'm in different about, I like her brand new tank top and whatever the hell is underneath it, hair and bangs look great and May is overall adorable in game. Sugimori messed up her artwork for me and she looks really dopey to me ruining some elements of her new design. What really bother me is her new over sized bow (bandanna maybe) compared to her old bandanna which I thought was almost iconic to Pokemon fans, they gave her short shorts too, I wouldn't really mind if it was normal shorts, but it seems like they went for a more "modern look" for girls who wear that stuff these days, oh boy she also wears hideous elf shoes! May looks really skinny and super light like she stayed inside all her life or something. Although not a huge problem I really prefer her with gloves too but like I said nothing really I miss about that.
I don't really have a problem with ORAS not having any character customization, I never really wanted it either and X was really the first time I ever had something like that, I always felt odd that I was the one to be in the game or something if a game included it. I always picked the default character, and the female and/or anime closest character if I was playing a Pokemon game, (picking Red and calling him Ash, or picking Dawn and naming her Dawn) or whatever their official name was. However since this is about ORAS not having it, people were expecting it too. May and Brendan were first designed in Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire, where that didn't happen, the two were not designed to be customized unlike the XY trainers Serena and Calem. I thought it would have been unfair for them to allow them to be able to as these are probably two of the most iconic Pokemon characters, and if they included the function, their designs or even new characters would have to be fully changed. Pretty sure the third version of XY will contain whatever the two had and implement them. I always followed the rule of principle, "these are not Emerald remakes, these are not XY third versions, these are Ruby and Sapphire remakes."

Flash was also rendered useless in ORAS by the fact that the dim sliver of light is still enough to see by.

While they're Ruby & Sapphire remakes, let's remember they did insert elements of Emerald into them (except for the one thing people REALLY wanted them to add in, or rather the 7 things...). This also goes into the redesign of Brendan and May (though they are more heavily based on their RSE designs):

BrendanRseOras_zpscugppcqw.png

Overall: I think they tried making Brendan look more "fit". He's much more sleeker and his clothes look a bit tight fitting, something you'd see a triathlete wear.
Hat: Color is based on RS but the Pokeball logo is new. Also the beanie part has been made to look more like a sac than anime spiky hair. I prefer the RSE hat if just because the Pokeball logo actually looks like a Pokeball. Though I'd prefer Emerald's beanie since I like the spiky look and think more spikes looks better than less (ORAS does look a bit like an elf).
Hair: While ORAS has the hair more visible, Emerald's also had some of the hair visible and we can see there its darker. While the debates were fun I kind of like we see the hair. Maybe they could have shortened it by half by having it visible does make it look more naturally than RE and Emerald which looks like he purposely tucker his hair away. Also you can see ORAS hair covers the back of his head, the other two look like they don't (and then we have the infamous image that for some "confirmed" Brendan had white hair).
Eyes: RS and Emerald and brown eyes while ORAS has blue. I mention this because RS and Emeral's May had blue eyes... and so does ORAS May. I wished they kept Branden's eyes brown. Its subtle, but them having different eyes colors sort of related to the versions. Brown is close to the color red and is the color of land while blue is the color of water. Get it? Brown & blue, land & water, Groudon & Kyogre, Ruby & Sapphire.
Skin: ORAS Branden is a bit more dark/tanned skinned than his RS and Emerald counterparts, similar to how Team Aqua became dark/tanned. With May remaining as white as she always been, it does create a nice contrast between the two and a bit of a compromise of not letting us choose their skin color. I like it.
Shirt: I would say ORAS shirt is more based on Emerald's than RS (though Emerald's was based off RS). There all similarly designed, but the main difference is the length of the sleeves and collar which reflects Emerald's. Now the exact design isn't the same, I kind of prefer Emerald's, but you can tell its Brendan's shirt.
Backpack: A clear inspiration from his Emerald counterpart, right down to it being green. It's a nice contrast with his red and black design. Kind of wish it was the only green part of his clothes but we'll get to that later.
Gloves: Ugh, why isn't ORAS Brendan wearing gloves? If they're not going to customize him than have him wear his gloves, preferably his Emerald.
Pants: While shortened and doesn't have the bottom colored yellow, ORAS Brendan's pants are more based on RS's. I kind of like Emerald's better, something about the two layers look cool. However if you're going to be running around an entire region and not going to wear tough jeans I guess athletic shorts would be your next option.
Shoes: Ugh, while I don't think they look like elf shoes the tip pointing up is a bit strange (though nothing I haven't seen before). Now real life shoe's tips don't touch the ground, but they don't point up to the sky either, they just stick out. Also color scheme clashes as uses two colors not part of the main color scheme (red and black). The white hat and green backpack work because its combined with the main color scheme creating a nice contrast. RS Brendan with his odd bits of yellow fits in for that reason. It's also why Emerald's hat always looked off to me. If I had to pick I would prefer RS's shoes as they look more show like than Emerald's which I'm not so sure how they're staying on as they're not fastened.

MayRseOras_zpsiozyyycc.png

Overall: One of my problem with ORAS May is that the really cutesy-upped her appearance when, while not exactly a tomboy, she had the appearance of a outdoors girl. ORAS May looks like a cutesy girl who never ventured out of suburbia thinks what an outdoors girl looks like.
Bandanna: Ugh, why did they make it into a bow? It was fine as it was and personally looked better.
Shirt: ORAS May ditched the jacket for a tank top and an undershirt. Preferred the jacket like her Emerald counterpart but ORAS May generally is made to look more like RS May.
Gloves: Again with no gloves! Either one would do as they're pretty much the same, maybe Emerald's only to get some more green.
Pouch: A combination of her RS and Emerald look, well, Emerald as in it's the only green on her. For the most part its yellow like her RS pouch.
Skirt/Shorts: While I like the Emerald jacket I do admit the missing white the skirt/shorts does hurt it. For this reason I actually like the ORAS shorts.
Shoes/Sock: That's something I didn't mention, them not having socks also looks a bit odd even if they're meant to be athletic shoes. The yellow is a bit too much, I'd prefer her RS shoes which has the yellow stripe in it but the prominent colors are her color scheme (red and black).

Customization:
I'm conflicted on the subject. On one hand you're right that they were (originally) designed without customization in mind and for nostalgia sake having them look similar to the way they did in RS brings back fond memories. But at the same time they did still change their design that, though recognizable at a glance, upon further inspection you'll notice things off about them which may decrease the nostalgia factor. In addition the XY protagonists default clothes look perfectly fine and on par with previous protagonist clothes (which would make sense as that's the clothes they appear in advertisements in so of course it'll look good if not the best in a general sense). You being able to customize them doesn't really change people thinking their default clothes as their official clothes. Honestly them getting rid of Brendan's and May's gloves, jackets, and decreasing the length of their sleeves and pants/shorts sort of made it look like they WERE preparing them to be customizable. Also if they were customizable they could have had a fun reference by including their RS and Emerald clothes as options. ;) Maybe a compromise would be allowing us to switch between their RS, Emerald, and ORAS outfits and maybe throwing in some other ones like their Contest clothes, Team Magma uniform, and Team Aqua uniform.

I mean, to the artists, it makes sense why and how they got a design touch-up. They were originally intended to look kind of sporty (Brendan wears a tracksuit/wetsuit combo, May dresses minimally with clothes that free up her movement), so an updated sporty look makes perfect sense.

It's not so much about trying to make them look more one way or another, I think people just get caught up in the fact that the designs worked for Sugimori's art style back in '04, and the new designs, as created by his most updated style, are going to have a different kind of energy. Ken draws people differently than he used to. He draws hair differently, faces, eyes, everything is detailed in a completely different manner. It's not really fair to judge ORAS May for having less meat on her bones and sporting more color when she was drafted under different circumstances from RSE May.

Not sure whether this is an unpopular opinion or not, but... Pokemon boxart (at least for the main-series games) is rubbish. All you get is an image of a single Pokemon and nothing else. I don't think that having several Pokemon from the generation, and maybe a background too, would be an unreasonable thing to expect. You could even still have the image of the game's mascot on the back of the cartridge.

What annoys me further about this is that the legendary is supposed to be this big, great surprise when you see it yet it's on the front of the box

I'm probably the guy with the most bizzarre tastes about the games, so here's a little list.

1) my favourite route in ALL games is the northern Sinnoh one that takes you to Green Bay , I don't actually remember the exact English name, since in italian it's literally "Snowtown." Yeah, that neverending snowy route with knee-deep drifts that as soon as you are out of sight of the mountain turns into a storm? That place where it takes forever to even advance, where you get lost trying to explore the route, where every trainer battle is a pain because of the hail damage?

Yes please, that's freaking amazing. I am a really "snowy" guy, and despite being quite old, I love even just staring out of the window when it snows, or even walking the neighborhood just to have some flakes swirling around me (freaking hell, last winter I even jogged while it was snowing). So, when I got outside the cave, I rejoyed. Once I had had a look at the map and had realized that it would have taken forever to get to the lake, I basically thought "this is what I've been waiting for since that pokemon Yellow cartridge." Halfway through, heavy snow started. Wow! I like that route so much that every time I played gen IV games I waited evening (on purpose) to play, so that darkness gave me a little atmosphere about being lost in a snow-buried mountain path.

2) Hoenn does not have too much water. The sea is great! What is better than swimming around? I also love to swim out in the open sea during summer, even multiple times a day, enjoying the view while bathing in the sun. It is so great to swim for a little while and then getting back to the beach for a break that I enjoy it even in pokemon games. No sooner had my friends and I bought R/S that everybody started complaining. You know what? That's awesome.

Yeah, I jog while it's snowing and I swim a lot. I know, it's weird, but I'm a weirdo.

Concerning both of the aforementioned statements, I really should specify that I am someone that really takes his time in progressing in a pokemon game, thus long and apparently pointless journeys like those are really fine as far as I am concerned. I do like to waste time with contests, dex breeding and hoarding, all of this with the storyline still at stake. I know it's kind of foolish since you don't have access to the Battle Resort things, but I am so cool with procrastinating that I transferred things between AS and X just for the sake of completing the regional dex before Cave or Origin and the national dex before the Elite Four.

3) Gen V starters are great and Gen II are the worst, with the Sinnoh ones being the best. Not that much to add here, only personal preference.

4) The same goes for Swords of Justice vs Jhoto roaming guys. I don't know if this is unpopular or not, but everyone I've spoken to prefers Entei, Raikou and Suicune.

I understand why they made the clothing changes, and I personally enjoy the brighter colors for May and Brendan, I just prefer the older clothes, I don't think its unfair because the artist has changed over time (I'm an artist myself and I can confirm that all artist do change in terms of style but may like some older pieces more). And it is fair to judge as it's a redesign and compares to older versions, that's pretty much redesigns work. I see your point though, ORAS designs are great, just didn't lead to my expectations, and like I said it's really only the sugi art that bothers me.

Hoenn and sinnoh are great! My fave regions, I love the scenery like you said. I can't get enough of tropical places like Slateport or snowy cities like Jubilife and Snowpoint. Hoenn is literally half water and land, relating to the theme. The only reason people dislike it is surfing is slower than walking and you constantly run into wild encounters, I honestly enjoy both those to an extent and never had a problem.

As for generation comparings I think some of you may have known that, although a great game, GSC (gen 2) or at least general johto, is my least favorite of the main series. Even for it's time the colors were hideous and the music was so high pitched and scratchy, I prefer the gen 1 muted color pallet and music over gen 2's. I don't really remember the story (did lugia and HO-oh even have a major roll) or much of the music either other than the highly popular champions theme, bike theme etc. don't get me wrong I love johto but the only thing to be really holding it up is returning to Kanto and fighting Red.

Okay, so after thinking for a bit, I have come up with a truly unpopular opinion. I do not want to see a 6v6 ladder on cartridge, period. There is one main reason for this, being that it will allow all Mega Evolutions that are Ubers by Smogon standard, as well as other Uber Pokemon allowed on the regular BS ladder. Imagine OU, just with Mega Kang, Mega Lucario, Mega Gengar, Aegislash, Mega Blaziken, Greninja, Mega Salamence (oh god), and probs something else I forgot too. It would be a really shitty metagame to play, and we also wouldn't have stuff like Keldeo, Manaphy, Celebi, Mew, all which are not really a problem for the metagame (except Manaphy though). Making some things that aren't unhealthy for the metagame go out, and letting in tons of broken Pokemon, will really just create something I wouldn't bother playing. And did I mention Swagger, Evasion, Baton Pass, Sleep, OHKO moves, Moody, and ways of forcing an endless battle? We banned that shit in our tiers for a reason!

(Sorry if this is too directed at competitive battling to slip into OI, but I just really wanted to let it out somewhere)

I read somewhere that some Nintendo guy said they were having second thoughts about Mega Mence, so I'd like to think that Nintendo would actually balance for singles if they were to put in official singles tournaments, but at the very least, we'd still have Greninja and Blaziken, since I daresay banning starters is not what an official format would want to do. In any case, it's not likely that they will--stall exists (and without Hoopa or Manaphy would likely be a tad more viable), and nobody wants to be playing a cartridge match for an hour.
