Gen VII: Pokémon Sun and Moon (New info Post #5834)

Nintendo's marketing list for 2016 was allegedly leaked, backed up by multiple sources. Among their list of games was Pokemon "Niji", the 20th anniversary Pokemon game, in which Niji translates Rainbow. It gained traction mere days before Sun / Moon's logos and trademarks were leaked so that's why people are mentioning it.

In addition to that, the official press release image for this game called it niji too. So obviously even late in the game they were going by that name.

I wonder though - how late in the game does Gamefreak determine the names for the next game?

I think that tends to be something they deal with early, they mused niji because they're secretive as fuck.

With the pokemon games, all evidence points to the name being heavy in importance the general themes/plot/legendary pokemon so it HAS to be something they probably come up with alongside the ideas and direction themselves.

The early leak that called the codename "niji" used the kana for those syllables, which means it could have been a corruption of "nijyuu" (二十), which means "20" in reference to the anniversary year.

Game Freak loves portmanteaus and word corruption so much, they even work it into their project working titles.

What worries me a bit (I guess not that much since I probably won't get these unless they are hailed as the next coming of Jesus Christ by everyone) is the obvious time thing they have going with Sun and Moon... does this mean more time-related bullshit like finding Mega Stones in XY and timebased evolutions like Umbreon/Espeon? Because I was never a fan of that unecessary restrictions for the sake of preserving a motif thing

What worries me more is whether there will be Megas, and even if there are, who's getting one.

I doubt Nintendo/Gamefreak would invest so much marketing in something they don't plan on keeping. People really love megas, and why not?
  • They are a method of adding new Pokemon without adding to the Pokedex
  • Their existence allows a lot of underpowered Pokemon to keep up
  • One per team restriction is a smart idea that makes the meta interesting
  • They bring old interest back to the franchise
  • They're fun to use
  • Majority of them look plain cool.
Personally, I wouldn't bank on more megas from Gen 1 or 3 unfortunately. I can see them doing 2 and 4 based on the anniversary of other things.

Gen V and VI Pokemon are crying in the corner for Megas.

I predict the next set of Megas is going to be Gen 2 and Gen 6 - although they may go whole hog and add Gens 4 and 5 as well. Mega Empoleon/Torterra? Sign me up!
If they do DP remakes this gen as well, you can bet we're getting Sinnoh starter megas. And Cynthia with a Mega Chomp...

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. The most obvious mega candidates are actually Hoennese--Solrock and Lunatone, for obvious reasons, and Flygon as well, now that the fanbase knows they had it ready for VI but couldn't come up with a good design.

Outside of Flygon, where is the idea that more Hoenn megas will come? They extensively covered that region already.

Gen 5 doesn't deserve any Megas.

Will end up calling it SM instead of SuMo or S&M. Just rolls off the tongue better

I'm curious as to the vehicles shown in screenshots. I doubt we will get to drive them, but would be nice to be walking down a route from a busy city or somethings and having a car go past you

Well Gen V already got one Mega, thus your statement cannot be fulfilled so it reverts to the opinion that Gen V is just as deserving of a Mega as any other generation. :P I'd personally like to see a Mega for Zoroark (just curious what they would do) and Klinklang (ALL THE GEARS!).

And one more advantage, which I hope to see in this generation: As proven by Charizard and Mewtwo, there's the possibility of multiple Megas for a Pokémon. That potential is quite underused at the moment, but I believe we will see more of it in later generations. If Game Freak ever makes an unbalanced or poor Mega, they aren't bound to the conventions of traditional evolution. They can just introduce another Mega Stone for the same Pokémon, giving it another chance. Moreover, it allows them to drag a Pokémon into the spotlight several times across several generations. Giving, say, Mawile an evolution would have been a one-off trick. Giving it a Mega suddenly made it very relevant. They could easily do that again by giving it another Mega. Plus it also gives a player several more options for what to do with his favourite Pokémon. I can easily see Game Freak revisit some Pokémon for another round of Megas in the future.

Garchomp immediately comes to mind in the likely Gen 4 revisit. People were initially dismissing Wally because they expected him to have Mega Gardevoir and we got mega Gallade. I think the likelihood Garchomp gets another mega that focuses on its dragon typing for Cynthia is high.

I remember this forum pre-ORAS a lot of posters did not think we were getting any new megas at all, no mega Sceptile or Swampert, and trusted the image of Steven with mega Charizard X. Gamefreak does not reveal all its cards. The best we can do when it comes to predicting megas is make educated guesses based on how heavily they market certain pokemon.

They throw a handful of curveballs that work out great though, like Mega Beedrill & mega Lopunny. :)

I get the feeling (not really logical so much as gut) that the only Pokémon to receive multiple Megas will be the super-popular posterboys of the franchise.

Codraroll:
Also I'm seeing no reason why, if a certain Mega isn't working out, they can alter the Mega or even just outright replace it. You can't really do that with a proper evolution, or at least in terms of just replacing it if it didn't work out.

Gabe:
Yeah, I was also thinking maybe they'd give Garchomp a second Mega just for Cynthia. It won't be as powerful as Mega Garchomp XY but will probably be faster.

Karxrida:
I'd say it's still too early to call. Yes right now it seems that way, but who's to say there won't be a Pokemon they have two great Mega ideas for and decide to go with both. Mega Evolutions seem to be a very "on the cuff" sort of thing at the moment, planned right when its decided that a Pokemon should have one.
I don't see the Eeveelutions getting more than one Mega though, already that's 8 Megas (and possibly counting) and I'd imagine they might be a bit formulaic just like the Eeveelutions themselves, at least for their stats.

Also calling it now, Flygon will have two Mega Evolutions when they finally debut it with one.

So where's Mega Pikachu? </sarcasm>

In all seriousness, the only Double Mega candidates I feel that are "logical" are those Pokemon that are already a mixed stat mon. Charizard has a decent special and physical movepool, and got a mega complimenting both.

Mewtwo has a great physical movepool and got a Mega to compliment it, as well as a mega focused on its main use (special).

Salamence got a Mega that can do what it already did (Mixmence) and gave it a Mega that can do all three roles, a second mega isn't necessary.

So if a Mon has the potential for both sides of the damage spectrum, it is likely to get a double mega. Infernape can (and I sorta hope it does) have two megas as proven by the fact it is the single most versatile starter Pokemon ever created.
