Gen VII: Pokémon Sun and Moon (New info Post #5834)

In before I once more threaten to switch to Yo-kai Watch because they are honest about what they deliver.

But seriously, this is quite disappointing. What kind of news simply states that there will be more news? Oh wait, that happened with X and Y as well.

Okay. So, before we get embarrassed by another Pokemon Sunday event, I gotta ask.

Did anyone reputable actually say, in definite terms, that there WOULD be new SM information in this month's coro coro? Or did we all just get tied to the hype train tracks again?

Gamefreak really doesn't want to excite their customers because that would be awful right? And here I forgot why I quit this game every so often.

Copy pasting this from another forum because I think it's pretty relevant - sums up my feelings decently, in response to a friend who is annoyed by excessive whining and/or entitlement from the broader fanbase re: news.

I don't think anybody is saying they owe us anything? It's more a generic expression of "want", which while not exactly a platonic virtue, it's still a pretty human thing to want things and to expect things and especially discuss those things with people who are expressing the same thoughts that you're thinking. Outside of a few forums the impact of any of this nears null anyway.

That said, you're not wrong. And I'd have agreed with pretty much most of it in general terms (maybe being a tad more forgiving) if not for this page:

This is not news. This isn't even worthy of being published. If you can call a single page of an anime magazine disgraceful without sounding like you're making mountains out of molehills, then it is disgraceful, and it never should have gone to print. And the Magearna thing is so far removed from being decent SM news that it really doesn't soften the sting from what is stupid salt in a (admittedly self-inflicted!) stupid wound. I wouldn't object to the blanked boxes in a vacuum, only that last month's Coro Coro did say we'd have SM news. I think it is certainly a reasonable assumption that that describes more than a really obvious and very unimportant typing reveal and the shape of the game boxes, purely because none of that counts as news worth publishing. A single Pokemon silhouette would have been disappointing, but it would have counted.
...
It's actually kinda weird now that I think about it? I wonder if the games have been continually delayed and the editors were left scrambling for stuff they could mention.

People just overhyped as usual. Nowhere was it stated that there would be new information on SM, last month's corocoro only said that 'special features on Sun and Moon' would start from this month on.
People are just acting as little children, because they didn't get what they wanted.

In the last issue, they said that Sun and Moon coverage would begin in this issue. It just so happens that their definition of the word "coverage" might mean "telling people when we intend to start bringing actual coverage" (recursive usage of the term coverage absolutely intended)

It is true that earlier, we have had a bit of a news drought in months after the initial announcement. But at those times, the initial announcement had brought some actual news to discuss. This time, we have Magearna and that's it. I guess you could count the logos, including that diamond-shaped thingamajig, but we have literally nothing but our own speculation to discuss. Past announcements gave us big, badass legendary Pokémon. Shots of the new graphics engine. Glimpses of new mechanics. This time, we were told that new games were coming, what their names were, and some artwork of one of the Pokémon that will be in it. An unfinished model of another Pokémon was only a split-second freeze-frame-bonus. Other than that, there were just brief glimpses of generic concept art which said nothing at all about the new games (I suppose a Blastoise in a fire truck is neat, but it's not like the existence of that picture changes anything).

There just isn't anything to be excited about this time. They're leaving too much to our imagination, there is nothing more to discuss now than it was when we didn't know new games were coming. Arguably, there's even less, since everything we thought we knew about Pokémon Z turned out to be a dead end. We can imagine new Pokémon and new locations, but we can't realistically expect anything, and as such our excitement is no more than daydreaming. I'd love to see a region based on medieval Romania, or 1920s Chicago, or 1100s China, but that's all air and no consistence since there are no indications it will ever come to fruition. For what my dreams concern, Gen VII might as well not have been announced yet. There is no difference, all I can talk about is air anyway.

I know Game Freak are counting on us, the fan forums, to build hype for them and therefore market the games to the fans out there. If not for the fan base, this attempted "show nothing to build speculation" marketing would have fallen flat. Sorry to say, but they're failing hard. When we can't discuss the new games without resorting to fakemons and wishlisting, we might as well not have had new games to discuss.

In programming circles, this could be construed as the very common "off-by-one" error.

What kind of "special features" could you possibly have without invoking lawyer-speak that doesn't include any new information, though?
In professional circles (there are so many circles, you don't even know) there's a term called "underpromise, overdeliver." This is exactly how not to do that. "Special features" sets a standard, if they weren't prepared to meet the implied and commonly understood meaning of that standard, they shouldn't have mentioned it in the first place. I still hold that complaining about the failure to deliver is a reasonable thing to do, unless someone's posting REACT videos of their public tantrums on hearing the news. That'd be acting as little children, right enough, but I don't think anybody has gone that far, uhh, yet.

((give it time))

Magearna itself is a very dull Pokemon to induce excitement from. Let's be honest, it's very similar to Diancie and less cute than Diancie. If we had starters on the other hand, that might actually have sated our excitement for a bit.

My reaction to this "news";
ANDDHSJFSXAFBDBGSHDHXAWVHGDJDHTDHEWCJJ.
OH dear gods why?!
gonna throw myself at shuffle until I get more news...(and look longingly at Zydog...

I'm going to try to be positive about this! :D

The colors on the boxart could be hints to colors of the box legendaries though? They're also both space looking, could hint at the legends being space-themed?

I didn't even think she could be hype bait. She's not even available in-game, let alone possibly 'take part' in the story, unless she went Deoxys. She's just there for the movie, no?

Magearna being Steel/Fairy:
*Sigh* I was hoping it would be pure Steel, I don't want Fairy to become the next Dragon-type where they slap it on almost every fairy/elf/pixie-looking Legendary to make it seem more special/mystical. It's a Legendary, that's more than enough to tell us its special. Ah well, maybe it'll be Special focused that way we have Mega Mawile as the physical Steel/Fairy, Klefki as the supporter Steel/Fairy, and Magearna as the special Steel/Fairy.

Undelivered Promise:
Yes, GF doesn't "owe" us anything. This is there franchise and they could do anything they want with it. And yeah despite our complaining we'll still buy it.

But at the same time of all this I also believe this comes with responsibility of handling the franchise and news given to their customers, aka the people who gives them money. These teases I don't think are keeping interest in the game to the general public, it's only annoying the dedicated Pokemon fans. Actual news, even the tiniest, would do much to garner interest in the game not just from fans but also the general public as no one outside the fandom really cares until there's actually new things to see. Like we already know about the new bird Pokemon, why not tell us about that. BOOM! New Pokemon, we learn a bit about it, fans can speculate on it (though depends on how much they reveal about its typing, Ability, and rarely Moves it knows and mentioned how its perceived role it) and the casual fan can get excited just because its a new creature they'll be using. It's not much, but it's SOMETHING that's positive.

We're not asking for the world here, we're just asking for them to do what they've did in the past. Some new tibits here and there to get the fans excited about the possibilities and keep the interest in the game in a positive light. I do admit I'm beginning to sour on this game, GF is treating it as a big deal (releasing it on the 20th anniversary) but have nothing to prove it instead of teases after teases. Like it or not, while will consider the game on its own merits at the same time I will be comparing it to older games so they should be careful with what they promise matching up to what they do.

So in short, they may not "owe" us but at the same time they should give respect to the customers, they can do anything with the franchise but that doesn't mean the fans have to agree with it nor support it, and we'll buy THIS one but it's just as lackluster as this news has been that doesn't mean the same for the NEXT one.

Blue & Orange:
So they'll be opposing forces. You mean like every other Legendary pair since Gen III?

This appears to be Nintendo's theme for this year.

I am annoyed with the general lack of info about Sun/Moon because I am waiting to hear about version exclusives to make my pick between the versions. But eh, I'm still going to get one of the games... I just will be waiting a bit longer to pick. (Although I'm still guessing that Sun's legendary will be a bird of some form. There's a few mythologies that have some form of bird related to the Sun. If it is a bird, then it is an auto-buy for me :P)

Regarding the 10+ Pokemon: So a confirmation that we're getting more than Starters+Evos (9) and Magearna (10) in Sun/Moon... tbh, we could guess that anyways due to 2 cover legendaries in addition to those ten.

Edit: Regarding the colors: That shade of bluish-purple seems like it invokes Dusk to me, which makes sense given that it is the Moon Version. The colorscheme seems fine to me since they do fit well with the names.

Incidentally, someone on reddit pointed out that you could infer a Solar and Lunar eclipse from the logos... I wonder if the bad guys will attempt to cause an endless Solar Eclipse then? (Or if it is related to the legendaries)

they don't owe us but doing this gives them negative responses.....and also corocoro gets negative response for agreeing to publish it too, so hopefully the message gets across and gf doesn't do this again, or at least corocoro or any other magazine, or any other platform for that matter, refuse to publish a blank page that's just orange and blue

Stay classy, Trollfreak. Stay classy.

With Mecha-Diancie, I'm not surprised on the typing. Gamefreak really is in the Fairy swing of things. A specially offensive Steel/Fairy does sound nice, I have to admit. I just hope it gets a better starting movepool than Diancie had before move tutors came to the rescue.

Still, I'm a little annoyed with the lack of actual news. Well, guess I'll just wait an extra month to get something of worth. Hopefully.

I would argue that they sort of do owe us something. Besides the obvious (We continually buy their products, support their jobs, loyal to a fault, etc) this is on them. They introduce Zygarde-10 & Zygarde 100 yet can't even give us something small like starters or trainer models? I would rather have them not tease anything if they're going to insult our intelligence and present their "huge reveal" as something you'd be an idiot not to guess like Magearna's typing. It's not like we're asking for move tutors, megas, or plot details.

I really hope the Sun legend isn't a fire bird again. We have two of those already. There are other animals attached to the sun.

I had lost hope with GF as of now. Anyways, I start to think GF wants to make new line of Mythical Pokemon. Before, we had the usual cute tiny legends. Looks like since Meloetta they make girly humanoid legends too. With this, who knows if Fairy type would be the norm of this batch of Mythical. Barring Meloetta, but there was also Shaymi in the tiny.

I didn't realize I'd been hyping myself subconsciously until I saw the corocoro scans.
Made my blood boil for a bit lol...
What is with this terrible marketing strategy? Is the game getting delayed?

Time (Dialga) and Space (Palkia) aren't opposites.

Hmm, true, but they are treated as parallel forces. And some media show them fighting each other since their domains, though different, do cross one another and have affect on one another (actually they need one another to even have purpose). So in that way their like opposites just like Land & Sea, Truth & Ideal, Life & Death, and now Sun & Moon.
