Gen VII: Pokemon Sun and Moon Discussion MKII

I don't think Team Skull is comparable to Team Rocket. Even if Team Rocket isn't trying to create another universe or something, they're seemingly on a whole other level.

I couldn't possibly agree more with you on that subject.
While Team Rocket steals Pokémon from other trainers with the sole purpose of selling them again for money, it's safe to assume that the Team Skull grunts actually care about their Pokémon to some extent.
While Pokémon were nothing but mere tools for Team Rocket, allowing them to achieve their villainous goals, the Team Skull grunts still seem to have formed some sort of bond between themselves and their Pokémon.
While Team Rocket is the textbook definition of organized crime, Team Skull appears to be merely a faction of rowdies that, despite being undeniably up to no good, still pose no real "threat".
They're kind of like the "Pokémon equivalent" of those punks that sometimes look funny at you on the subway.

Considering the fact that even their leader Guzma refers to himself as a "reject", I think it's safe to assume that the rest of the team is made up of people that feel like "rejects" of society as well.
I like to imagine Team Skull being a group for rejected members of society that are seeking for a new identity a new purpose in life. Maybe they seek for peers that might've ended up on the wrong path of life as well and that their actions are some sort of rebellious revenge or mere frustrated cries for help. I personally believe that they're not fundamentally "evil" and that they might've learned that it's not too late to change their lives yet by the end of the storyline.
Everybody deserves a second chance after all.

Either that or I'm reading way to deep into all of this.

The Japanese site has Sun and Moon pages dedicated to the Zubat and Dratini lines for some reason.

Foreshadowing?
They're going to put Dratini at every cave?

Don't know whether that'll make me happy or angry because they're going to make me hate Dratini so much. I didn't even think that was possible. Remember though they aren't in their forms so I doubt it's an actual Alola form. Maybe they're important to the plot?

I don't want to bring back the whole "there'll be mega" discussion, but I actually think it's still early to say anything in both senses. It was odd to me not seeing even an hint to Megas at first, but once they presented Alolan formes, I immediately thought that it's just the most reasonable thing to hype people towards new things first. If there'll be new megas, I'm expecting them as "one more thing" between the next announcement and the actual launch of the games. They first presented new pokémons, then new mechanics and now new formes with bits of in-game story now and then. They still have to reveal the "secret" behind starters' and Rockruff' evos, only after that we should see any new hint at megas imho.

How about something on a less serious note?

I wonder what's special about Alolan Persian that they didn't show it with Alolan Meowth like they did for Sandshrew/Sandslash and Vulpix/Ninetales.

Ugh, they better have a good reason to include Dragonite and Zubat on the site with the other new mons/forms. Teasing them for some useless in-game feature that everyone will just forget about when the main story ends will be such a dick move. Just give us their damn Alolan Forms already.

TRAILERS:
Before we look at team Skull, how about we go over the trailers since that reveals a lot about Team Skull:

0:19: Gyarados, don't you think Hyper Beam is a tad bit overkill for Wishwashi's Solo Form. Gyarados: You don't know man, YOU DON'T KNOW!
0:48: You know considering we saw Gyarados knock out Wishiwashi in one hit the School Form not doing the same back (or to any Pokemon in the trailer it fought) doesn't really give it that much menace its said to have. Any Pokemon can hit Gyarados, Electivire, and Metagross, it's not that special.
1:02: Lol, so Ancient Power now literally spawns fossils to attack with. We have a clam, rib bone, leaf, and helix shell. NEW FOSSIL POKEMON AND ALOLAN OMANYTE FAMILY CONFURMED!
1:10: As I pointed out before, I like how Pyukumuku tries holding itself up with its fist organ before fainting (and how said organ now looks like an actual hand).
1:23: And of course Morelull opens up with Spore.
1:28: Dat Team Skull Encounter theme. Let's go!
1:31: Lol, that's just so funny, especially if you think they're being serious.

Male Grunt: Yo, what do you think of this! *Makes skull pose*
Opponent: Um, you're armpit it itchy?
Female Grunt: Wha-no! We're making a shape of a skull, fool!
Opponent: Oh, now I see it. That's adorable.
Male Grunt: Adorable?! But we're suppose to look menacing!
Opponent: You really don't.
Male Grunt: But Big Bro Guzma makes use practice this pose an hour a day to get it just right!
Female Grunt: You know I think this is maybe why Big Sis Plumeria's crew skips that practice...

1:40: With all this posing in battle and when talking you expect them to be making gang signs, lol. But hey, it does give them personality. As for the naming thing, since the Japanese trailer has another Grunt named "B" but it male (and I doubt it's just them using their first name initial) I'm guessing if they want to explain it that when on a mission they have a code name system to not reveal their identities or have a sort of hierarchy so they know who's in charge.
1:56: We'll talk about what Guzma says when we talk about Guzma later.
2:17: So much swag.
2:32: What's that attack? Usually I don't bother asking since I often just think its a new animation for a move but the animation of it having a bone limits it to just a few moves... and none I can see where it begins with a ghostly aura. A possible new move for Alolan Marowak? Note that was a super effective hit on Haunter, all bone moves known so far are Ground-type which Haunter is immune to since it has Levitate as its sole Ability.
2:41: Hmm, I already used Lilo & Stitch's "Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride", is there any other surfing songs. Surfin USA? Alola would be part of the Poke-US, just like Unova.
2:49: I guess the Pikachu family is going to get Electric Terrian naturally now. Sorry Pikachu Ph.D.

Just going to talk about anything new that wasn't shown in the English trailer.

0:00: Dat Team Skull battle theme! Yeah!
0:19: It's neat they're going to start mixing up what Poke Balls NPCs use. While a small touch it does sort of help world build as it shows you aren't the only ones the Mart is selling Poke Balls to. It would also be neat if the type of Poke Ball they used help indicate something about the Pokemon, like since these grunts have a Haunter and Drowzee in Nest Balls that means you can catch Drowzee and Gastly at low levels.
0:22: A hint of dynamic weather?
0:25: Anyone want to translate all the Team Skull dialogue to see if they're saying anything interesting?
0:26: Wait, Delibird is native to Alola?
0:29: Looks like those back grunts got a whiff of Morelull's spores...
1:03: The male grunts pose back and forth during battle, Guzma is squatting down and gives a command with a hand wave; I'm really liking the trainer animations in the background so far. It's giving them character and I hope this goes for other NPCs as well.
2:23: So for some attacks Pyukumuku's fist organ does resemble and actual fist also.

There, now that we saw the trailer stuff I can more fully talk about Team Skull... later.

Sorry guys, something came up and I got to go to work now. *sigh* Will post my thoughts on Team Skull right when I get back.

It's a really neat animation and I hope the fossils will be in the game, although I could see the leaf (which looks like a feather to me) might be a reference to "Bird Jesus". They did reference both "Bird Jesus" and Helix in ORAS, so they might continue now.

0:22: A hint of dynamic weather?

It might be a hint of dynamic weather, like what we saw in XY with certain places getting rain sometimes, but the areas shown around that point in the trailer are showed with a huge raincloud on the official artwork, so it could just be for that area.

Since said already discovered mons dragonite and crobat maaaaybe might get megas instead of alola forms if megas are returning (sorry if this brings that debate back up).

Since seems like they didn't bring up whats special about them today, my guess is probably will next week at the championships since they typically have something neat to announce either it be a new mega or pokken getting a wii u date.

As much as I want a Dragonite holding a Dragonite to evolve into a Mega Dragonite. Why would they list Zubat and not Crobat if this was a teaser for new Megas?

Given the information thus far, it could be true that Persian doesn't have an Aloha form. Since they proved Eggsecute, Cubone, and Pikachu don't.

They didn't prove anything, every evolution animation was cut before the end and we didn't actually see a Pikachu, Cubone or Eggsecute evolve into an Alolan variant.

I think Pikachu and Eggsecute won't get an Alolan variant but Cubone will. Going Ground -> Fire/Ghost is stupid.

I think it is worth noting that if this is pointing towards Alolan Forms, then this would likely be the first time we know of a non-Gen 1 'mon getting an Alolan form (Crobat). Granted, it's an evolution of a Gen 1 Pokémon, but it still opens up options beyond the original 151.

Of course, this is all teetering on the line of speculation at the moment so it's best left there.

I guess you're right that "proved" is a strong word and they could still have Aloha's for each of them...

...but given the lack of data on them I think it's more likely they don't at the moment. The website text really suggested it, and we've already seen Pikachu in-game without an Aloha form.

I was thinking about Marowak-A's niche.

Fire and Ghost are great dual stabs, especially when you consider Marowak has Fighting and Ground coverage. The burn immunity is lovely for a physical attacker.

While Rock Head Flare Blitz would've been nice, Lightningrod makes it one of the few mons to resist BoltBeam, which makes it a solid counter to electric mons like Mega Manectric and Raikou. Marowak resisting Grass and being immune to Electric makes it a great partner to water types of all kinds, and since it 4x resists U-Turn and is immune to Volt Switch, it makes an interesting VoltTurn counter too.

Assuming it can exploit Thick Club, it may find some use in OU as either a wall breaker, or if it gets priority (Shadow Sneak?) maybe a set up sweeper.

What would be the damage output of a +2 (SD) Shadow Sneak with Thick Club, more or less?

Dunno man, shadow sneak is ridiculously weak as a stab, I can't count him as set up sweeper, without belly drum, if it has to depend on a base 60 BP priority. I mean it works for azumarril but as aegislash has shown us that even with bulk plus double SD shadow sneak is plain lackluster.

I think Marowak does get belly drum through breeding. Yes he gets belly drum! So whether or not that niche with thick club is usable or azumarril does it better is up to the bst though.
