(Little) Things that annoy you in Pokémon

I never noticed any issue when playing. That being said, I heard/saw people with the original generation 3DS seeing noticeable performance drops at certain points, so that might be the case.
Mmm, yeah the funny part is that I own New 3DS. :P My husband got New 2DS XL and his game was lagging too. It was most noticeable during double fights in Aether Palace.

I think the best way to solve this pronunciation issue would be just if GF did use IPA in the ingame Pokédex. But yes, it would be so much easier if we all could read and speak in Japanese. That "Neatle" v.s "Naetoru"still bothers me a lot... I checked some anime episodes and they do say "Naetoru" very clearly without skipping any vowels. I still see this weird translation from katakana to romaji in multiple websites.

Oh well, I'm not so worried about pronunciation myself because my English sounds quite terrible. :D

I got lots of other things that annoy me in pokémon quite a lot and most of them have been already covered in this topic... like pacing issues in multiple pokémon games and design flaws when it comes to different regions....Especially in Alola because I've played SM/USSM a lot lately. Like look at Paniola Ranch for example. There is 3 pokémon centers placed close to each other for the sake of the story.Still they had to put a flight spot in there because it's quite inconvenient to walk there from other locations.

I also don't like SOS battles even though they are useful for EV-training. DexNav and "hidden pokémon" mechanic was so much better for finding rare pokémon if you ask me. Super Training was also lot more fun for EV-training than this one.

And performance of SM/USSM games itself is quite terrible in some points of the story and in some double fights... It was either the game isn't optimized very well or 3DS itself is at it's limits but it hurts my eyes when your FPS drops drastically to single digits during some scenes.

Other thing that annoys quite a lot is Gladion and his relationship with Lillie. I relate a lot for Lillie and how she did develop during the story (at least in Sun/Moon), it was quite realistic for her personality. Gladion in the other hand felt like he was just a filler here.

Okay so Lillie was someone who didn't know herself and had rather low self-esteem before she decided to save Nebby. As a person she is quite modest and reserved. Her low self-esteem is result from Lusamine's unhealthy (narcissistic) behavior towards her kids and people around her. Lillie still isn't completely broken, thanks to her father and Wicke most likely. But just that since father disappeared, things went to south.

I don't know if Lillie and Gladion were twins or if other kid was older but it doesn't matter. Gladion's actions don't make much sense in the game. He tried to "save" his sister from mother by running away? When he is confronted he says that he was trying to find a way to save their parents and become happy family again? Ok, I know that he is traumatized because of his mother's cruel experiments but that's not excuse for multiple plotholes. What made him to think that Team Skull could help him? Even Lillie acknowledges that he isn't making any sense in the remakes. :D

Anyway, my point is that this setup had great potential for some realistic and quite sad story about siblings overcoming their harsh start (or gain their z-form as they put it in the games).

If it was me who made Gladion's character, I'd made him to do something drastic at Aether Palace so his mother would've been furious enough to kick him out from their home etc. Then rest of the story would make more sense. Also I'd had written more dialogue between Lillie and Gladion because siblings always have this love-hate game going on through their lives. And it would've been nice addition to Lillie's character also.

edit// I never thought about this hail/snow thing too deep. It's indeed weird than in all pokémon games when there is snow effect (even if it's slowly falling snowflakes in overworld) in battle it turns into hailing. :D
They could have easily made stealing/rescuing Type: Null be the event that would see Gladion kicked out. Wicke could still be sympathetic to the plight of Lusamine's children, possibly knowing Gladion rescued his Type: Null and remaining quiet about it so she can still provide that bit of his story and be the friendly face during the Aether infiltration part.

As for why he worked with Team Skull... I think he was mostly trying to keep a lookout for Cosmog and ensure Team Skull didn't get it. He might've been approached by Guzma, who Lusamine may have asked to keep an eye on the boy without revealing the fact he's her son.

... It's Pokemon. It shouldn't come as a surprise that there can be plot holes big enough to comfortably fit a Wailord through. (not that it excuses their presence, mind you)

During most in-game scenarios in USUM I haven't seen much lag, except for double battles which are pretty bad, especially when a weather or terrain is on the field or when someone uses a z-move. It doesn't really annoy me but it does kinda ruin the mood of the battle when it happens.

It's not like plot details are ever important and coherent in Pokemon anyway, not even in the Mystery Dungeon games; I've played Pokemon and never cared for their plots; I kinda wish they cut down on that actually or at least stop playing them so painfully straight.

This is the epitome of lazy entitled gamer whining, but in the Gen 7 games I hate how you have to use the touch screen to get to the trade and battle menus.

Mostly because the game is otherwise really good about letting you use the buttons and avoid the stylus for 97% of the game, it's just this one little snag. And the weirdest part is as soon as you access the trade menu it goes back to allowing D-pad controls!

It's tiny and I'm spoiled but it's just a weird lack of control optimizing. It's like we're back in the early 2010's and they're shoving touch motion controls into everything, and this is just the last traces of that virus. Plus if Bravely Default can let you play the entire game from the left side only, surely Pokemon could optimize a bit better.

And don't even get me started on the insanity that is playing Pokemon Let's Go in docked mode.

There's major a flaw of the Pentagon/Clover rule. And no, I'm not talking how about how unfair it is for older players who have to replace all their new Pokemon from scratch just for the sake of bowing down to other players. There's a loophole in its how done. You see, there's this event Lugia that was given out that Japan with its HA and access to Hurricane, but it was only distributed in Japan. This gives players from Japan, an unfair advantage since they have an elusive Pokemon we don't have. Yet, the whole point of the pentagon/clover is to make sure everyone has the same advantage. This loophole proves that the origin marking rule doesn't even do its job right . Good job, TPCI, good job.

I just remembered a big peeve of mine, and that's how Pokemon decided that hail = snow.

Yeah, especially when it's snowing on the overworld yet when you enter battle it turns to hail is this the most noticeable. Now originally I can see them not wanting to program in two different weather affects that are similar to each other with just a few differences, but since ORAS introduced the super variants of Sunshine and Rain I think this wouldn't be a problem doing. Easiest way to do it:

1. There's no move that summons Snow. Hail still only summons Hail.
2. It'll only Snow if its snowing in the overworld.
3. Snow has the same effect as Hail except it doesn't damage Pokemon at the end of the turn.
4. If an Ice-type enters battle when it's Snowing, the Snow turns into Hail (in addition explains why Snow Warning summons Hail as only Ice-types have that Ability). Snow can also be turned into Hail is the Move Hail is used.
5. Once turned into Hail it cannot be turned back into Snow and the counter is reset.

In addition to that maybe wouldn't hurt to add in some additional effects to Hail to not just make is damage dealing form of Snow (like letting Blizzard have a 30% chance hitting through Protect or increase Ice-type's Special Defense).

The Dex Says: Yeah, they had a pronunciation feature in the "Pokedex 3D Pro" side app, I don't see why they didn't bring that over. Also, if they don't want to have one official pronunciation of a Pokemon, I also don't see why there can't be multiple pronunciations. Like for Mismagius, they can say both "mis-MAGE-ius" and "mis-MAGG-ius" are both correct ways of saying that Pokemon's name and I don't think anyone would get upset. For Kyogre both "KEE-ogre" and "KIE-ogre" are correct. Arceus they can include all four ways of saying it's name: "ARS-eus", "AR-Sayus", "ARK-eus", & "AR-Kayus. Would this be any different in real life how different dialects affect how we pronounce certain words (remember that famous song, "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off"; to-may-toes & to-mah-toes).

Frame Battle: GF's programmers don't use the most efficient coding methods. Like I could understand the 3DS not being powerful to render Double Battles in 3D in XY, but when the 3D is off and it's still struggling with frames? Hopefully that won't be an issue on the Switch.

The Aether Family:
Lusamine didn't go nuts until Mohn vanished, so it was only Wicke that kept Lillie going crazy (she says so herself in the game). Actually, I think Lusamine only started to really obsess over Lillie once Gladion ran away, but that's just my interpretation. The game is kind of vague exactly how crazy Lusamine was after Mohn's disappearance (and how it progressed over time and certain events).

Gladion is older than Lillie though maybe only by a year or two or three. The anime had a picture of them when they were much younger.

I think the original reason (at least in Sun & Moon, don't know if Ultra changed this reason) Gladion ran away was just to help Type: Null. He learned they were going to put all the Type: Null in an unending hypersleep so saved one and ran away to train with it to become stronger. Now I don't know if he planned out what he was going to do after that, feels like the plan was spur of the moment and he was making things up as he went along. He worked with Team Skull as more of a necessity, Guzma paid him to keep the grunts in line (don't know how he ended up working for Team Skull, maybe got into a fight with them and Guzma impressed by his strength and attitude offered him the job; though I could also maybe see this being a ploy by Lusamine who had Team Skull working for her and wanting to keep a close eye on Gladion & Type: Null). But back on point, Gladion ran away to help Type: Null and wasn't worried about Lillie. It's why Lillie chewed out Gladion during the Aether Raid, Gladion leaving made Lusamine even crazier and obsessing over Lillie as she was the only family she had left. Now I know Ultra changed it so that he ran away to train up Type: Null to battle Necrozma... but that was a change forced by them adding that bit into Ultra so I don't really count it.

But like with many things about Gen VII, it could have been better written for sure. The relation between the two does feel stale (especially since post game one of them goes off to Kanto). I'll give the anime credit on this, they do have more moments with the two, notably them going through the Dragon Trial and seeing Gladion having to deal with his little sister's idea how to "solve" the puzzles. But hey, at least the interacted. FUN FACT: Guzma and Plumeria never interact in the game, and it wasn't until the credits of Ultra Sun & Moon do you see them in the same scene together, but Plumeria is just standing there while Guzma announces to the grunts he's disbanding Team Skull.

There's major a flaw of the Pentagon/Clover rule. This loophole proves that the origin marking rule doesn't even do its job right . Good job, TPCI, good job.

Not to mention the Clover wasn't even needed. The original reason for the Pentagon was to get rid of the bloat of all the Event Pokemon which had special moves.

Amity Square's existence boils my blood. Gameplay wise, fair enough. But "lore" wise, it pisses me off. It's discrimination I tell you! Iirc, wasn't there an NPC that complained about its exclusionary nature? Amity Square needs to be BURNED and get its offensive attack stat halved.

... Alright, I'll post it:
2010-09-20.jpg

Though I do wonder what they'd do with Amity Square in the remake...

Probably extend the list to include Emolga, Dedenne, Togedemaru, Cutiefly and Ribombee, maybe Mimikyu, almost certainly Sword/Shield's regional electric rodent.

Actually I was more referencing the fact that ALL Pokemon in Gen VIII had a walking & running sprite that for some reason they never implemented a walking Pokemon mechanic except in Let's Go for the Kanto Pokemon (though it also brings another wrinkle with you riding on some Pokemon). Sure, they can keep it restricted to cute (or maybe small Pokemon if they don't want to be that restrictive), but I really would like to see them using all those models cause some of the animations (notably the running) were quite interesting and its a shame they were never used.

This may have been posted before as I'm quite new to the forums but I sometimes find it a bit annoying how:
  1. There are some abilities that are really just inferior versions of other abilities
  2. Some abilities are literal renamings of other abilities
  3. Some abilities are incredibly useless
  4. In particular, Levitate causes all sorts of logical inconsistencies
Let me elaborate on each of these points below.

To start with, abilities like Fluffy are really just worse versions of their counterparts like Fur Coat. According to Bulbapedia, there are only six special moves that make contact (the rest being physical). Fluffy essentially boils down to giving a double defense boost at the cost of adding a fire-type weakness. Why couldn't Bewear's line have gotten Fur Coat instead? Fur Coat even guards against moves like Psyshock, Psystrike, and Secret Sword. And there are still physical moves that don't make contact like Earthquake. In fact, the six moves that Fur Coat loses out on are Draining Kiss, Grass Knot, Infestation, Petal Dance, Trump Card, and Wring Out. These are highly situational corner cases that unfortunately don't justify the existence of Fluffy over Fur Coat as an ability. For another example, consider Water Veil and Water Bubble. Water Bubble is literally just Water Veil but also halves damage from Fire-type attacks and doubles the power of water type attacks. Why even keep Water Veil when there's now Water Bubble?! I get that Game Freak was trying to give a signature move or ability to all of the new Alolan Pokemon and Alolan forms but this just seems like such a disservice to all of the mons with these objectively worse abilities. For yet another example, consider Hustle and Huge Power. Hustle boosts the attack stat x1.5 at the cost of accuracy. Meanwhile, Huge Power doubles the attack stat without any negative effects. Why make one ability clearly better than the other one? And to add insult to injury, the evolutionary families that get Hustle aren't even that great to begin with: Raticate, Corsola, Delibird, Durant, etc. Giving better mons worse versions of existing abilities would make sense but in many scenarios, that isn't the case. Why make Wonder Skin a worse version of Magic Bounce? Why make Water Compaction arguably a worse version of Storm Drain? Why make Hustle a clearly worse version of Huge Power/Pure Power?

And that leads me to my next point. Huge Power and Pure Power are the same abilities. Now, that by itself isn't really a problem. But it becomes annoying when Game Freak tries to say "Alolan Pokemon have all new abilities" and then go ahead and make Full Metal Body functionally equivalent to Clear Body (with one or two minor upgrades here and there). It's a let-down when Solgaleo's ability is literally just Clear Body with a ribbon on top :psysad:.

What's even more disappointing are the useless abilities in battle. Pokemon with run away, stall, or anticipation are now at an inherent disadvantage compared to other pokemon. Why can't run away allow free switches during battle? Why even make stall an ability and then give it to an already extremely slow Pokemon?! Maybe make anticipation somehow more useful by revealing all the opponents moves and held item? Another Pokemon that got hit hard is Zoroark, whose Illusion ability is practically worthless with team preview. And let's not talk about Rotom-Fan's Levitate .

And that brings me to my final point: Levitate. Now, first off, I think that Game Freak had a really good idea at first in generation 3 with this ability - give some Pokemon a ground immunity and it also allows them maybe a little wiggle room for creativity (don't have to think of as many abilities). But ultimately, I think it's just weird that Pokemon like Volcarona and Magnezone get hit by an Earthquake when they're canonically shown to be levitating. And mons like Flygon, Claydol, and Hydreigon are incapable of getting a hidden ability since it would then replace Levitate. The inconsistency is what bothers me. And to tell the truth, I don't know what kind of good fix there is to this. Perhaps they could simply give Pokemon that do levitate or fly a property that allows them to avoid ground type moves entirely. But then why would flying be a type at all in that case? It also seems like it would be an unfair advantage for some Pokemon.

Anyways, thanks for reading my rant I guess. What do you guys think?

The reason there are weaker versions of other abilities is because the Pokémon receiving the weaker ability may seem too strong for the better version (pure power Durant lol)

Water Compaction really should have granted Pallosand immunity to Water moves.

Also, you forgot Frisk.

I think that's a fair point for some Pokemon like Durant - perhaps Durant was a bad example haha. But what about the other Pokemon I mentioned like Raticate, Delibird, and Corsola getting Hustle while Mega Medicham and Mawile get Huge Power? That just seems mean. :(

The ability Stall. In a fangame I caught a Sableye with stall, and stall really sucks. It's so annoying watching my Sableye slowly die to pokemon that it could take out in one hit, making me have to run to a pokemon center more often. I'm currently trying to find a mega stone or ability capsule to use on my Sableye however both items are rare and up to chance. Sableye is the only pokemon with stall but yet it isn't Sableye's only ability which just makes it worse. Why do only some Sableye have stall? What is the reasoning behind any Sableye having stall?

Another thing that annoys me is how poorly Pokemon Super mystery dungeon does encouraging you to use multiple pokemon. SPMD is much harder than previous mystery dungeon games and it is harder to train up your pokemon. If I'm struggling with my main team why would I use pokemon that I barley touch or are weaker? Another problem is the change in mission mechanics. Instead of randomly generated missions there are set missions. This means that overtime the missions will get harder and harder forcing you to use stronger pokemon if you want to progress. At the same time I feel like it is discouraging using stronger pokemon because they have a huge cool down before you can use them again. At the end it just makes me cling to my starter pokemon because they are always available, and that Sylveon because it was one of the first pokemon I befriended and trained up, though my motivation to play dies when they are unavailable. It comes to a point where you either stall out days until your team becomes ready and you can progress or play Peliper island and make no progress other than training. It's especially annoying after gates to infinity succeeded in getting me to use almost all of my recuited pokemon, now if only GtI had more pokemon in it.

The Super Mystery Dungeon "out for lunch" mechanic is the absolute worst thing about that game especially when they do this for Pokemon that aren't quite as strong as your team, and it still remains in the post-game where restrictions shouldn't be in place anymore, so it unnecessarily restricts how you want to build teams. I also don't like how missions are completed exactly once, and some dungeons don't require revisting ever again, especially when you have farms like Super Apple Forest. I do like the connection-way of befriending, it beats out having to rng recruit mechanics, but they should honestly give you both that and random exploring, treasure hunting, escort (as gross as they usually are), or bounty hunting missions.

You know what else should get Stall as an ability? Slakoth and Slaking. Sure, it’ll still be a detrimental ability, but it’s got to be worlds better for their viability than Truant, plus it still fits with their ‘powerful but lazy’ motif. Besides, Slaking at least probably has the (physical) bulk to make it work (and it can use Assault Vest or something to patch up its SpD)

Regigas would appreciate stall a little better than slow start though I'd imagine it'll be inviting its enemies to burn it even harder.

One thing I really hate in terms of design would be the fairly frequent depiction of birds with one wing sticking out. It doesn't look cool. Forcing birds into an anatomically awkward position to make a "cool" salute looks stupid. Farfetch'd gets some leeway as I feel it's humanoid enough to have free arms, and maybe Decidueye, but not for Pidove or Honchkrow. Just imagine Salamence or Skarmory trying to do that stupid salute with its wings, that's how dumb and awkward it is.

The only time you should see a bird with one wing out is when it's stretching, but even so, the pose isn't like these birds.

But if they make the birds look intentionally ridiculous, that's fine for me.
