This may have been posted before as I'm quite new to the forums but I sometimes find it a bit annoying how:
- There are some abilities that are really just inferior versions of other abilities
- Some abilities are literal renamings of other abilities
- Some abilities are incredibly useless
- In particular, Levitate causes all sorts of logical inconsistencies
Let me elaborate on each of these points below.
To start with, abilities like Fluffy are really just worse versions of their counterparts like Fur Coat.
According to Bulbapedia, there are only six special moves that make contact (the rest being physical). Fluffy essentially boils down to giving a double defense boost at the cost of adding a fire-type weakness. Why couldn't Bewear's line have gotten Fur Coat instead? Fur Coat even guards against moves like Psyshock, Psystrike, and Secret Sword. And there are still physical moves that don't make contact like Earthquake. In fact, the six moves that Fur Coat loses out on are Draining Kiss, Grass Knot, Infestation, Petal Dance, Trump Card, and Wring Out. These are highly situational corner cases that unfortunately don't justify the existence of Fluffy over Fur Coat as an ability. For another example, consider Water Veil and Water Bubble. Water Bubble is literally just Water Veil but also halves damage from Fire-type attacks and doubles the power of water type attacks. Why even keep Water Veil when there's now Water Bubble?! I get that Game Freak was trying to give a signature move or ability to all of the new Alolan Pokemon and Alolan forms but this just seems like such a disservice to all of the mons with these objectively worse abilities. For yet another example, consider Hustle and Huge Power. Hustle boosts the attack stat x1.5 at the cost of accuracy. Meanwhile, Huge Power
doubles the attack stat without any negative effects. Why make one ability clearly better than the other one? And to add insult to injury, the evolutionary families that get Hustle aren't even that great to begin with: Raticate, Corsola, Delibird, Durant, etc. Giving better mons worse versions of existing abilities would make sense but in many scenarios, that isn't the case. Why make Wonder Skin a worse version of Magic Bounce? Why make Water Compaction arguably a worse version of Storm Drain? Why make Hustle a clearly worse version of Huge Power/Pure Power?
And that leads me to my next point. Huge Power and Pure Power are the same abilities. Now, that by itself isn't really a problem. But it becomes annoying when Game Freak tries to say "Alolan Pokemon have all new abilities" and then go ahead and make Full Metal Body functionally equivalent to Clear Body (with one or two minor upgrades here and there). It's a let-down when Solgaleo's ability is literally just Clear Body with a ribbon on top

.
What's even more disappointing are the useless abilities in battle. Pokemon with run away, stall, or anticipation are now at an inherent disadvantage compared to other pokemon. Why can't run away allow free switches during battle? Why even make stall an ability and then give it to an already extremely slow Pokemon?! Maybe make anticipation somehow more useful by revealing all the opponents moves and held item? Another Pokemon that got hit hard is Zoroark, whose Illusion ability is practically worthless with team preview. And let's not talk about Rotom-Fan's Levitate

.
And that brings me to my final point: Levitate. Now, first off, I think that Game Freak had a really good idea at first in generation 3 with this ability - give some Pokemon a ground immunity and it also allows them maybe a little wiggle room for creativity (don't have to think of as many abilities). But ultimately, I think it's just weird that Pokemon like Volcarona and Magnezone get hit by an Earthquake when they're canonically shown to be levitating. And mons like Flygon, Claydol, and Hydreigon are incapable of getting a hidden ability since it would then replace Levitate. The inconsistency is what bothers me. And to tell the truth, I don't know what kind of good fix there is to this. Perhaps they could simply give Pokemon that do levitate or fly a property that allows them to avoid ground type moves entirely. But then why would flying be a type at all in that case? It also seems like it would be an unfair advantage for some Pokemon.
Anyways, thanks for reading my rant I guess. What do you guys think?
