Pokemon Scarlet & Violet - 18th Nov 2022! **OFFICIAL INFO ONLY**

That... strikes me as such an odd decision, even if it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Like, Hawaii historically has had a ton of interaction with and immigration from Japan as far back as the 1800s (if not sooner), and Alola reflects this with the regional forms specifically being migrant species from Kanto and by having a ton of Kanto-Johto influence in its culture. Surely they could have borrowed a Kantonian word for Z moves as well instead of just grabbing some random English word?

Really I'm just being pedantic, but still, kinda lame regardless. Could have been a neat bit of worldbuilding that contributes to something already well-established in Alola.
I mean if we really want to get pedantic there's no specific reason it should be a "kanto" loan word either, it should probably be some hawaiian term for it since Z Moves are entirely an alolan thing (the z motif even specifically seems to come from the Tapu, judging by them making the Rings and the Z animation that is created when you get the tapunium)
But as it is it's just "zenryoku" in japan for the same reason its "zenith" in english; it's not actually meant to be a word from elsewhere, it's just another japanese/english word in the japanese/english version of the game's book

For reference the full text of the book is just
"Some Myriad Z-Move Notes
The vigor and strength of the trainer combine with their Pokemon, as they bring everything out of one another in a move.
Thus came the Z of Zenith."

Since the word doesnt have a descriptor for it, like the tapu do in another book to specify they're guardian deities, it's probably meant to just be...well, a word, that you'd recognize and understand immediately.

Pokétubers complaining about Iono dragging out for content and being really annoying while posting videos where they drag out for content and sound annoying lmfao (Particularly the "Was electroweb said as a hint for us to slow down???!?!?" thing that sounded so stupid)

As for the eye thing itself, I kinda get the feeling that its just a stylization thing. Its definitely an interesting thing to point out but idt it means anyth at large

Yeah just to clarify the poketuber speak and overanalysis is cringe and stupid. It's mainly the eye thing I'm curious about, has any other Pokemon character been shown with something similar?

"Zenith" Marshadow was used on some Marshadow merch, at least in america. https://web.archive.org/web/20190204212947/https://www.pokemoncenter.com/marshadow-pokémon-pins-(2-pack)-710-03023

I don't think other merchandise refers to it by name. Not that there is seemingly any marshadow merchandise on sale now to check, anyway; and Japan doesnt sell the pins currently either.

e: I also feel like the pokemon center us site is super borked for me so that's fun.

e2: Interestingly it seems to be the only place that mentions it. That one specific bit of merchandise. The official website used to have a little bit about it when showcasing Marshadow, but doesn't give it a name (& the file name is just the alt tag). Mysterious

I think I have bought (nearly?) all of the Marshadow merch available in English and those pins are the only examples I can think of that explicitly called it the Zenith form. I don't think any of the TCG cards label it that way, either.

Pretty sure it's just to show her emotions in an exaggerated art style.

Kind of seems like they referenced a style guide for marshadow and how to refer to its other form, but it was like outdated and they'd long since decided to not refer to it as "Zentih".

Going to do things differently by responding to stuff first than (as some people have mentioned what I wanted to say), if there's anything left, talk about the trailer.

She's basically just a "normal" streamer but she has the aesthetics of a vtuber

it's fun

It is fun, but I don't feel GF quite got the right "feeling" which makes this whole thing feel off. The main problem is that the whole thing is obviously scripted.

"Um, DUH! There wasn't an actual person doing the presentation, it's a premade video"

Exactly! We're supposed to THINK this is a spontaneous stream like any other streamer on Twitch or VTuber. That Iona is in her studio (being she's a Gym Leader it make sense she would have a studio: her Gym) and she has decided to make this stream, I guess for promotional purposes (because wouldn't her fans know what her Pokemon partner was)? Anyway, the problem comes with all the special effects, not only do some happen as soon as Iona needs them (whether through her prompting like with her Magnemite hair clips, or in the background like the various displays) but she's also able to interact with them (such as when she pushes away the water/rain/tears background).

"Well, this is the Pokemon world, we know they have more advance technology than we do. Her Magnemite hair clips have preset reactions and also emote to her emotions. As for the displays, they're holographic and they respond to motion so that she can interact with them (and do funny visual gags like pushing the background away once she's done with it). And being she runs a Gym she likely has people working for her as well that can play the special effects as she needs them"

All very true. maybe this is how a professional streamer does things in the Pokemon World... but that doesn't make it any less uncanny to us in the real world, many who are used to watching streamers and VTubers and know how the general setup is like: usually stationary, streamers not really using any special effects. Now bigger VTubers have lately been more able to start moving around as they get 3D models, and the special effects we've seen I guess they can replicate as they're in a fully 3D environment, but what I've been getting from Iono is that she's supposed to be a real person and is just dressed up like a VTuber.

I know, this overall is not a big deal, if she said she was a like a performer or pop idol no one would be batting an eye. But since they went the streamer direction, a decision done possibly to better connect with their target demographic, it feels like the "how do you do fellow kids" meme. I wouldn't call it cringy, but to me it feels like it's not no the mark either.

WolfieVGC's reaction stream was mostly being at a loss of words. There were minutes of silence when the reveal trailer ended.

For anyone curious (I started it at the beginning of the trailer just so you can watch the very moment he has an existential crisis, I think it happens around 43:54)

She does seem to hint we'll see a new mon soon, ie her partner Pokemon.

But is it a new Pokemon or a Regional Variant?
If it's a Regional Variant, this little game should then be possible.
But if its a new Pokemon, well, this whole thing would be kind of pointless as of course we wouldn't be able to guess what it is.

Edit: Hey let's be positive though, for first time, the game not having voice acting will be a bless, we won't have to hear that atrocity.

That is until next season of the anime where Ash gets invited to be a student instructor as the Fruta Academy in Paldea and one the things the popular shows the students watch between classes is Iono's show.

Yo fuck you all she's mine. Don't you dare breathe her air.

I'll shoot.

People are like "wtf we didn't get this and that", I don't care what you didn't have. I've found God.

I'm buyng the plushy. There has to be a plushy.

While it's not often they do make plush of the important NPCs (Gym Leaders, Champions, Rivals, etc.) so we'll see if they make one for her (they already look to have made plenty of cutesy artwork for her like the chibi drawing of her at the end of the video, so they have the assets for any "merch" she would sell).

I don't like Iono's pointy teeth. Is she even human?

Yeah, that goes with what I said above of them mixing the streamer and VTuber aesthetic but it just doesn't gel. Her look is mostly fine, but they just had to push it one step beyond and give her something which only makes sense if it was a digital puppet. Heck, I don't event know why they did it (well, I do, plenty VTubers avatars are animal-based so they have pointy teeth), you don't really equate pointy teeth with the Electric-type (and her aesthetic is Magnemite-based, if it was Luxray or Manectric would have made some sense).

Hopefully her in-game version is more interesting than <cute hyperactive anime girl number 526>, cause that's what she looks like to me right now.

I'll give the game extra credit if they pull a Wizard of Oz and, while navigating the Gym Puzzle, discovers a side door which leads to Iono's motion capture setup.

Maybe something like Klara? You know, in retrospect, maybe bringing Klara and Avery back as gym leaders in Paldea would've been cool. Really liked these kids

No, Klara was actually funny. She looks and acts like a sugary pop idol, but she's truly a toxic person when you first meet her and its cathartic to see more and more of her mask crack as the player keeps besting her. Iono is playing the genki Japanese variety show host streamer thing straight, which just means those who aren't used to it or just don't like it aren't going to enjoy her antics.

Is this someone connected to the Pokemon Company?

Out of everything shown for this game so far this character is asking the most for some Toby Fox music magic

Hmm, something like Death By Glamour maybe?

Feels like a missed opportunity* to not have the streamer character be used more during the promo cycle, presenting mini trailers, recaps etc.

From a world and character building perspective, I mean. I don’t find this character trope particularly endearing.

Considering the reaction to her, I actually think Pokemon Company made the "right call" of just having this and the next trailer introduce her and leave it at that. They could probably already tell people were going to have a diverse reaction to her, some loving and some hating, so the best option is a less-is-more. Those who love her now would have something to look forward to in the games and future Pokemon merch, those who hare her only have to really deal with her now and when you challenge her in the games (and then any other cameo appearances of her like in the anime and Pokemon Masters).

That said, I wouldn't have minded to see more of this kind of stuff for the other Gym Leaders. Like, instead of having them introduced in the trailer as "oh and here's a Gym Leader", maybe alongside the trailer do a little promo video for each one in a style matching them. Like Grusha would have a 90's style extreme sports montage doing wicked snowboarding tricks and jumps. Brassius would be a video museum tour showing off some of his works and clips of Brassius in the middle of his creation process.

Considering Paldea usqes the same writing system as Galar, maybe the two regions' respective cultures aren't that different.

To be fair, English, Spanish, and many other European countries use the Latin Alphabet but made their own language with it and their cultures are still plenty different. Not to mention I wouldn't be surprised if this is just the default Pokemon World language from now on, a made up gibberish language which, if you need to read any of it, just need to interact so the text box can translate it.

These Cute Little Fangs? That's an anime thing, hey Raihan has these actually!

It's her whole mouth, not just her canines.

Anyway, I'm going to bring Diglett against her. It works against Lt. Surge after all. :blobuwu:

Just remember: Short & brown, lives undergroun(d). Long & white, friends to shipwright(s).

They tried TOO HARD to make her look "popular".

As I said above... I'm fine with the whole vtuber/streamer/influencer thing.

But... she really just looks and speaks like <generic anime girl n°526>.
There's literally nothing that seems "unique" or "interesting" from the way they presented her.

For the most part I think she looks alright (then again I'm used to the rather extravagant appearance of some VTubers... though usually it's on the other end of the spectrum of "cute" if you know what I mean... jiggle physics).

At the very least she looks fitting for an Electric-type Gym Leader, but I guess that could just be the giant yellow & black shirt (which has a Pikachu-tailed star Youtube playbutton on it, cause she's a streamer). The pink and cyan hair is certainly a new element but I think it also works in the sense they're pastels of red & blue which are the color of magnets (hence the Magnemite hair clips). So she had enough "Electric-type" in her clothes to match her genki energy (surprised we hadn't had an Electric-type expert with the genki personality until now). Meanwhile everything else, notably the single leg stocking & pink eyes, is typical VTuber stuff.

I'd bet on it being either an Electric-type Seismitoad or a convergent evolution that looks similar.

I agree, when she mentioned the bumps on the head my mind also immediately went to Seismitoad. It's been a while since we had another Electric/Water-type (though I'm sure the competitive scene would disagree) and I think it would be an easy enough of a switch to do (I'd replace Poison Touch with Volt Absorb, swap its Attack & Special Attack, then some minor move edits like Parabolic Charge for Drain Punch, etc.).

The only hang up I have is the "it's cute" comment. I'm sorry to tell you Seismitoad lovers out there, but Seismitoad isn't cute. It's quite ugly, to be frank. I'm not saying its a bad Pokemon, just that it may have spent too much time in the water sending vibrations through its face.

So, this is either a case of "beauty cuteness in the eye of the beholder" (Iono possibly hinting this by assuring the cuteness comment with "it's (her) partner, so that's a given") or it's an entirely new Pokemon.

"Maybe instead of Paldean Seismitoad its a new evo for Palpitoad". A possibility if we want to stick with it being related to Seismitoad. Another idea I had though is that it's been a while since they referenced...

It's probably Pawmi's evo

... Pawmi. Well I'm going on anyway. Despite this gen's Pikaclone, it had a rather bland introduction and many thought more might be coming soon for it. Not sure why it would grow bumps on its head, maybe would have to do with something about Pawmi's ability to send out a shock by rubbing its paws against its cheeks.

Grusha had the fun though of seeing lonely otakus reactions when they found out Grusha is male.

Well I read a funny article on Kotaku joking about ways Iono can get cancelled.

Middles help you point how a design is more likely to go, but still keeps some element of surprise, which is the best of both worlds imo

Torracat begs to differ.

Raihan and Elesa kinda paved the way for this style of character. Diantha too

Eh, MAYBE Raihan (and Gordie), but Elesa and Diantha? Elesa is a fashion model and Diantha a movie star, sure they are celebrities but not the way its presented with Raihan, Gordie, and now Iono. If I had to put it in perspective, I'd say Elesa and Diantha are performers first, influencers second; it's from doing their job good do they get recognition and fame. Raihan, Gordie, and Iono are influencers first and performers second, they gathered a following through pure charisma that allows them to do stuff. And makes sense this tone shift occurred in Gen VIII as that's when GF experimented with having the younger staff take over Pokemon game development, the old passing the torch to the new; so makes sense we're now really seeing stuff like social media and influencers of that kind now appearing as that's the celebrities the newer staff are likely more familair with.

I mean, it do be just a thread on a forum. Big Brother isn't watching us, and we can have fun about video game news, between two waves of info discussion.

... Just a few posts above you DHR-107 made a post and he's the mod of Orange Island. If he's not "Big Brother", than who is?

Imagine if the only voice acting in the series was the damn Vtuber. People would riot.

To be fair we did get a voice actor for Clavell.

Yeah... her doing a thing about teasing what her partner Pokemon would make more sense in-universe if she were doing a debut stream, which would be a lot more scripted much like what this video would have been... but that would also involve more info about the streamer given out (i.e. likes, dislikes, goals, etc) and not really fit the kind of video this would have been going for. If she had been streaming for awhile then her fans would likely already know the answer and that kinda video probably wouldn't do as well.

Although while true that generally streamers are stationary and not using any special effects a lot of streamers tend to do activities that are generally stationary: play video games, do art, whisper into a weird-shaped microphone that's about as much as or more than a month's rent for most people (ASMR), etc. None of which seems to potentially be the kind of content she does, which is likely just chatting with viewers and telling stories and being able to move around making energetic exaggerated expressions would probably help sell the whole genki girl persona. As for the special effects, if she's a successful streamer and gym leaders make decent money then odds are she would be able afford a green screen studio and a set-up that's able to do green screen stuff in real time, (i'm... kinda sure that sorta thing is possible IRL too but am not certain) especially if she has a pair of high tech hairclips that can move on their own.

tl;dr: I can buy the reality of her being an IRL streamer who dresses like a Vtuber. (Her outfit is definitely plausible and I wouldn't be surprised if there's going to be quite a few Iono cosplayers since her outfit definitely looks like something that people who know how to make outfits can probably do without too much difficulty, although the main challenge would probably be getting the oversized jacket to stay put.) But yeah, there's definitely stuff that could have been handled a bit better about the whole thing. (Making the reveal of her and her partner Pokemon as a single, debut-style video that could also be used to try to flesh out the world a bit more, even if there isn't meant to be a payoff for stuff like making up a few fake bands for her to be a fan of it would have been a much better way to go.)

I'll give the game extra credit if they pull a Wizard of Oz and, while navigating the Gym Puzzle, discovers a side door which leads to Iono's motion capture setup.

Iono is playing the genki Japanese variety show host streamer thing straight, which just means those who aren't used to it or just don't like it aren't going to enjoy her antics.

Eh, given at how common the whole "yeah, well, that well endowed girl vtuber you're simping over is actually a fat old guy" kinda thing is... I would prefer they don't go that route. Definitely would be amusing if they went more of the Klara route (maybe not as toxic though) and if they were to do some kinda storyline involving Iono (which they very likely wont) then I would rather they go more realistic and make it about parasocial relationships and those kinds of issues.

Considering the reaction to her, I actually think Pokemon Company made the "right call" of just having this and the next trailer introduce her and leave it at that. They could probably already tell people were going to have a diverse reaction to her, some loving and some hating, so the best option is a less-is-more. I have no idea how the Japanese audience has responded to her (iirc someone indicated it was favorable? or at least a lot of people thought she was cute) but honestly if they had introduced her earlier and did video segments of her show as kinda world build-y ways to introduce some of the mechanics or other NPCs... although definitely would probably play into the "how do you do fellow kids" kinda thing so... eh. It's still a neat concept (using in-universe things, like the symposium thing where they revealed Wiglett, to unveil new game info) that is worth exploring but would probably need another hook to sell it better. Still, if they do want to make an "Iono Zone" that's a promo for the DLC where she talks about some of the stuff to expect in it then I wouldn't mind that.

Although considering they would have to pay for the voice acting... they probably won't (unless they actually got a more well known vtuber like Marine (who, imo, kinda sounds similar to Iono (although Angie the doll in the Japanese version of Resident Evil 8 sounds a lot like Marine) to voice her or something instead of a VA that does stuff for games/anime)

It's her whole mouth, not just her canines.

Which incidentally isn't the first time we've had a human character in a Pokemon game with those kinds of teeth. The Punk Girl NPCs in Pokemon Masters also have shark teeth. Although that game is a spin-off.

For the most part I think she looks alright (then again I'm used to the rather extravagant appearance of some VTubers... though usually it's on the other end of the spectrum of "cute" if you know what I mean... jiggle physics).

Yeah, some of those models are rather detailed like that. GirlDm's is also impressive for other reasons entirely. (Crazy good face tracking) 'course those also cost crazy amounts of money (Good models are over $1k for both the art and rigging)

Not entirely sure how the oufit really fits an electric gym leader outside the colors, but then again other than the first 3 having military themed oufits and the most recent 2 not sharing a theme... I guess there isn't a hard theme anymore?

Ceruledge seems like it would be the new weavile

In what way?

Its literally a cat growing muscle in the front legs. You guys were just on the 4 leg copium tbh

Meanwhile it's back legs looks thin and bent only to walk/pounce as a quadruped, surely it would be too weak to ever stand on...

Take a good look kids at what's going to happen to Sprigatito.

I will consider against demolishing Iono with the tag-team duo of Numel and (maybe) Stunfisk if this is the case. It'd just be too funny.

Nah man, if that happens you need a Grass-type, Steel-type, and Litleo (and maybe a canine Pokemon too). :blobnom:

Eh, given at how common the whole "yeah, well, that well endowed girl vtuber you're simping over is actually a fat old guy" kinda thing is... I would prefer they don't go that route. I'm not saying go in that direction. What I'm saying is that instead of this
iono.jpg

XY_Lass.png

She's just a plain girl (BTW this is the Lass from XY).
(I was debating whether to use a VTuber who has shown what they actually look like, but feel that's a bit too far when this illustrates my point just fine)

If you need me to put it in a scenario:

  • The player challenges the Levincia Gym and you don't necessarily meet with Iono but rather she greets you on a screen. She sends the player through a series of puzzles, getting excited both on how well the player is doing but especially how her viewership keeps increasing. After the third puzzle it's clear she's too busy wanting to increase her viewership than battle. However, as you're waiting for the fourth puzzle, the hear a voice coming from a nearby door which is repeating what Iono is saying. You enter the door which leads to a room with a girl, back facing you, standing on a platform with several camera & microphones around her and her wearing a tracking suit. She's facing several screens showing Iono, a chat box, & statistics. Whatever the girl does and say Iono on screen does and says.
  • "Oh Mr. Challenger! ~ You're next challenge is ready! ~ This one is going to be a REAL shocker!... Challenger? Where are you..."
  • While pretending to look around, the girl turns around just enough to see the player watching her.
  • "AAAHHH! D-d-don't pay attention to the girl in the booth! I'm, I mean, she's just one of the, um, Gym technicians! Yeah, she's just, uh, technician-ing the Gym..."
  • After a few seconds of silence, the screen goes to a "On break" screen and she takes off the helmet.
  • "I'm not fooling ya, am I? And I overdid it with the challenges, didn't I?"
  • The girl, who reveals she is the real Iono, apologizes and explains she tends to get over excited when she sees the viewership goes up, gotta keep up the content grind! She asks you to wait and puts on the helmet.
  • "Hey! ~ Sorry for the sudden break, but the challenger just completed the ~ Super Shocking Secret Challenge ~ and now qualifies for a Gym Battle! Give us a few minutes more to prepare!"
  • And with that she asks you to go to the battling room as she gets dressed in her streaming costume.
  • "I used to have to wear these heavy clothes when I first started and it tired me out quick, but as soon as I was able to make a digital version of myself it become WAY easier and I can now stream for hours!"
  • And from here is the Gym Battle.

Which incidentally isn't the first time we've had a human character in a Pokemon game with those kinds of teeth. The Punk Girl NPCs in Pokemon Masters also have shark teeth. Although that game is a spin-off.

Not sure how true it is, but I believe it's a trope of a certain group of Japanese delinquents to file their teeth so they are like shark teeth. So a punk girl having shark teeth makes sense as it's going with a delinquent stereotype. But a pastel colored genki streamer who is a non-Dark-type Gym Leader? Not so much.

Good models are over $1k for both the art and rigging

From what I heard they can be well worth over $4k (sorry to keep using Shylily though she just so happened to have a video where she says how much her model cost and why they cost that much; and yes the video says 8k but on a subreddit she revealed she only paid 4k because the modeller she used became famous after her debut and they raised their prices to 8k).

Not entirely sure how the oufit really fits an electric gym leader outside the colors, but then again other than the first 3 having military themed oufits and the most recent 2 not sharing a theme... I guess there isn't a hard theme anymore?

Yeah, Electric never really had a solid theme. Sure we had the military dressed guys and then a few techie ones, but we've also had a fashion model. Honestly a streamer is more alligned with the tech side of things. As for her clothes, I'm curious how many styles they went through before deciding on this one. They must have dozens of character design sheets figuring out what Iono is going to look like (and probably a dozen more variants of the one they chose).

This Pokémon will have the best dex out of every Pokémon generation since 3DS era. I thought they'd done it with Lechonk, but this is taking chungus to a new level. I LOVE fat mons, they are chunky and adorable, but they also eat babies and families alike.

This thing is adorable and soft to the point you want to hug it so bad, but at the same time it could end your entire career by eating your soul, your body, and the souls and bodies of the people you care about.

Superb.
