also I didn't realize that the co-ed showers was supposed to imply that sexism is over in this society, I always thought the military just had co-ed showers and I told people I wanted to join for that and got others to do so as well. kind of embarrassing in retrospect

One of the benefits of fascism is that everybody is equally worthless

another interesting thing I noticed (and actually I'm unsure how I missed this as a kid) was they censor the cow being ripped apart by the arachnid

and then the very next shot is all the uncensored torn apart bodies at the mormon colony

    this movie really hates mormons

    they're ok I guess
“Nosferatu” is a better title, anyway, than “Dracula.” Say “Dracula” and you smile. Say “Nosferatu” and you've eaten a lemon.

I see why Ebert got the Pulitzer Prize

also reply to my starship troopers shit
dude in the Starship Troopers movie were they trying to make it that the bugs didn't even send the meteor and the whole war was just a lie because fascism?

see I always thought the bugs actually did it because in the book, they do. but looking at the movie I realize it is never actually made clear that the bugs did that only that it was blamed on them

Another thing, was the whole news thing with the trial where he is immediately guilty supposed to show how he doesn't have a real trial? I always thought it was that they just had psychics act as judges so they could just read his mind to see if he's guilty.

This is like the bit where hell is real because han solo says it in a throwaway line in 5

    Hulavuta
lol yeah. but it doesn't mean hell is real it just means people from his planet believe in it
things I realize if you watch Attack of the Clones without already knowing everything about it:

you don't actually realize Count Dooku is a sith until his lightsaber is Red (well I guess when he uses the Lightning right before that)

you don't actually realize Count Dooku is Sheev's apprentice until the ending.

honestly I kinda feel that way with a lot of movies, but I don't wanna forget entirely because like eventually you always learn more over time right? So like maybe you could store what you know about the movie and then come back and get it after watching it without knowing.

There are a few movies I'd like to do that with. Like maybe The Dark Knight for example, remembering what you said about it relying on twists which makes it unforgettable on first viewing. I was already spoiled by watching YouTube clips and reading stuff (and seeing The Dark Knight Rises first).

I mean it came out 2008, never watched it in full until 2013. So how would I even know lol.

Honestly it's always cool to see how better writers make George Lucas's shit work. Like Dave Filoni had a field day with it in The Clone Wars, explaining the Sifo-Dyas stuff that George just put in because it was a typo that he liked even though it created a huge mystery with no conclusion.

And I've already gone on and on about how the Darth Vader comic cleverly ties in his love for droids and technical skill (established in the prequels) with his impatience toward his human minions (established in the original)

Speaking of the Palpatine fight though it would be cool to see Sheev fight all 4 masters for at least a little bit. Like show off some of that skill fighting off 4 dudes at once. Kind of like Clone Wars Grievous debut. He even does something similar in The Clone Wars when he fights Maul and his bro

Still not sure how I feel about Sheev using a light saber though. But honestly pure-force battles are not really dynamic or compelling. The Senate battle was cool though cuz he was throwing all the seats at him but generally they are really hard to do. Also they'd be over so fast because he'd just take whomever out in one shot.
you know I kinda liked Rogue One because in the scene where they are getting the data tapes from that big chamber when Jyn puts the file in her pocket there is a nice close-up shot of her ass :ok_hand:

Calm down joss. You can direct a star wars movie in a few years ok
    Hulavuta
    Hulavuta
haha you know actually at the premiere Joss said this movie made him want to do a Star Wars movie because of the level of freedom they had
on another Nolan note are you excited for Dunkirk. Honestly it's weird because it doesn't seem like his style. he's always been a sci-fi/psychological guy, war film seems like the complete opposite. they say he's just doing it for the oscar and then he'll be back to Nolan movies again

Like for me I can't separate a film from the author's hand in a way. So even if you see something disturbing you'll think of it admirably because you recognize how skillfully it was done. Or the opposite.

It's just that so few movies even grasp "war is bad" as a universal theme; many throw in horrid scenes of violence and suffering and people are like WOW! how crazy. But american war movies in particular have an obsession of showing how amazing we americans perservere through the hardships to be the good guys. Like saving private ryan is one of my least favorite films.

There's basically 0 films from the german perspective, and those that do are 10000% Hitler Is Very Evil; which is not untrue but do people not think that some of the kids fighting for germany were as patriotic as the americans were? you know.

But my overall point is I think that it's stupid to build a whole hero narritive in every movie; if you're going to have a "realistic" war movie then just show all the bad stuff happening without a lovey dovey happy ending. Like rogue 1 could have been a good war movie.
    Hulavuta
    Hulavuta
but again though, that's like a limitation of film. you can't really separate the historical context from it. if you paint Hitler sympathetically people will be like "this is a propaganda film!" I watched The Birth of a Nation last week which was like the original thing like this.

Historically the Allies were the good guys. I think you could have a film with sympathetic German characters but it would have to be from the Allies perspective and a message that "not everyone who fights for a side is a bad person" but I don't think you could have it from the German perspective, just a moment where they find a German soldier who is sympathetic. Or if it was from the German perspective they'd have to eventually realize the error of their ways by the end. Films have to have catharsis in some way.
Yo I found out why I hate the ending of Inception so much

I mean beyond why I already hated it. Somewhat related though.

and you are right about the studio thing. like if the answer is not definitively given nerds are still gonna be talking about it 6 years later like we are doing now

The ring is the real totem, but he's not wearing it at the airport when he gives his passport to the guy. So....he's not dreaming in the end?

And nah dude what I'm talking about is the idea that from start to finish the ENTIRE movie is a dream, and he never wakes up, the "real world" in the movie is already some levels down, which I think is stupid because what's the setup for him to be dreaming? there's no purpose. There's people that are like "the entire movie is fabricated! The clues are there (i.e. sato buying the whole airline) that would never happen in the real world!" to which I say lol stfu, dream sharing technology also doesn't exist in the real world, it's a m o v i e

lol people actually cite that Saito shit as it being fake? lmao

I bet they also find continuity errors and goofs and flubs to prove that it was fake too right?

and yeah that is why I strongly believe that Cobb is in real life at the end.

and yeah we are on the same page about the "whole movie is a dream" thing. you could say that about literally every movie, the only reason people wanna say it about this one is because the movie itself is about dreams
biggest plot hole in The Dark Knight Rises: how is Mayor Garcia still Mayor if it is 8 years later
