So I take it for Pert then you could put nothing in speed to outspeed Blissey, as he has a higher base speed stat, and relatively little for Meta/Tar to outspeed Skarm?
Pert is slower than bliss with a -spe nature. And yes meta/tar just need a few points for skarm.

If I want a defensive Swampert, how do I decide whether I use earthquake or not? Which threats are earthquake sets and non-earthquake sets better at covering?

Excellent question that I think has pretty nuanced answers.

Most of the time, the question people start asking is Refresh or non-Refresh pert? Because using one slot for Refresh tends to reorient the other moves towards Protect + two of Surf/Roar/Toxic to do slow and weak damage to everything instead of Ice Beam/EQ which has more super effective hits and can take out targets faster.

Refresh is good when you want to keep the momentum against Skarmory, that is, don't mind exchanging damage on Skarm in return for receiving Spikes. Consider this team called el clasico by Hclat (Tar/Skarm/Gar/Zap/Pert/Aero) that mostly float and want Skarm weakened for an Aero endgame - that is one example. Refresh is also a perk when you have other Pokemon that cover Refpert's weak damage output. For example, Refpert + Moltres (or even Dug) are used because Molt can switch into Metagross, which pert without EQ can't hurt as well.

Although the following is an uncommon viewpoint, I don't think that Refpert needs to be coupled to lack of EQ, because I see a lot of potential in being able to maintain momentum vs Blissey with EQ, making the combo great into SkarmBliss.
In this Jimvitational replay, Sadlysius used a team of mine (I call it el cloysico due to its similarities in gameplay to clasico) with EQ + Refresh Pert to deal with Toxic and net a surprise KO on Blissey: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen3ou-784463
The logic behind this choice is that the Cloyster-based team is built to be faster-paced and thus can trade Protect (due to taking fewer hits) with EQ to prevent Blissey from healing, as Swampert and Zapdos would be the only safe entry points for Blissey.

Are there any specific targets that Charizard's fire blast OHKOs or 2HKOs and flamethrower doesn't? Are there any other reasons people use fire blast over flamethrower besides "the accuracy matters only 15% of the time"?

252 SpA 30 IVs Charizard Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 312-368 (93.4 - 110.1%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO
252 SpA 30 IVs Charizard Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 249-294 (74.5 - 88%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA 30 IVs Charizard Flamethrower vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Metagross: 300-354 (87.4 - 103.2%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
252 SpA 30 IVs Charizard Fire Blast vs. 168 HP / 0 SpD Metagross: 379-446 (110.4 - 130%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Those are the most important ones.

Sorry for double posting because I forgot about these questions in my previous post, but why do people sometimes have beat up instead of substitute/focus punch on Charizard? What does beat up cover? And do people ever use both fire blast and mild nature, or do they just pick one of them to OHKO the Skarmory and Metagross?

My understanding is that beat-up is often a 2HKO on Blissey with a healthy team. Charizard Focus Punch often can't 1HKO Blissey. Since Focus Punch needs to not be interrupted Blissey's 3-4HKO Ice Bean (or especially 2HKO Thunderbolt) can beat a Charizard behind a sub while Beat Up Charizard can beat Blissey 1:1.

Edit: for similar reasons you'll sometimes see beat up dugtrio because beat up and EQ are both a 2HKO on Blissey but dugtrio should be prepared to live one ice beam and beat up isn't counterable.

Charizard focus punch can struggle to 2 shot blissey. Otherwise this is the correct assessment, the beat up mechanic allowing most mixoff teams beat up fits on to 2 shot blissey even if a mon is statused/fainted.

Is it to late to get into ADV? I might as well be a beginner cus apparently the skill level of everyone has risen absurdly drastically in the last year and left me completely behind. I wish I could reset my knowledge and just start over because something about my approach is completely wrong. I cant even maintain 1100 with """""""meta""""""" teams. Peaked at 1450ish a while ago, this game is going the way of SSBM in all the good and bad
Want to play the game but good god its just frustrating and unfun nowadays
Aero jolt spikes is unusable
Beerlover is unusable
Anything without tar instantly loses to endure hera
Callous regirock used to be a fun team to use
If you go for the safe play you lose to skarm bliss
If you go for reads its gambling if your opponent is braindead enough to stay in
lavos was right
I cannot for the life of me find a team that I like thats semi functional in the modern metagame

Nope never too late. While the average player might be better now, the average player is also relatively new to adv and had to start somewhere.
And unlike melee there is no physical tech skill / muscle memory you have to build up (not that those are even strictly necessary to enjoy melee).
At worst you're rusty and need to just play more and/or look at replays to see what other players are doing.
Obviously this is just a hobby so only invest as much time as you get out of it

I ran a chess club, and at some point the average ability rose, and I couldn’t come up hungover with 2 hours of sleep and dominate anymore. And it was frustrating at times, I’d go and lose to everyone, but I got better a lot faster.

I had been playing Pokemon for a year when I got into ADV. And I got my ass handed to me for the majority of the next. But as of late, I’m starting to make predictions, and outsmart my opponent with a clever read.

Jimothy makes a ton of videos on his channel playing with weird teams with off meta picks. The teams he uses are generally in the video description. I’ve used some with Pokemon I like, and I’ve done okay.

As a newcomer to Pokemon, I’m in a weird position where I’m v smart and good at strategy games, but would go into each game with years less experience with the type of battle and on the Pokemon themselves. Long as you’re having fun your ability will catch up eventually :)

Is there no role compendium of some form for ADV OU? I've been trying out one of the sample teams but I've been struggling to figure out what role some mons/sets have, and for here it's Hariyama, I havent found a proper use case for him that fits my playstyle (balance non-TSS with a bit of para) and I don't know if it's better for me to switch him out for someone else, but I can't do that if I don't even know what role he fills.

Im not super good at this myself, but I wanna guage where my ability to analyze Pokemon is at. Personally I use him to chip down walls, which leads to them switching out. He can also be used to scare the walls directly, but isn’t strong enough to do a lot of damage if the opponent has a defense that matches up well.

IE if I read properly, I can hit Celebi with HP Bug on a switch in, but if not then I have to switch out bc I’ll risk getting outsped and KO-ed by Psychic.

Works best as a threat but can’t take a lot of damage because he’s easy to wear down.

Heyo. Sorry if this is a stupid question. I have been watching a lot of Jimothy Cool and have been wanting to get into learning adv. In the sample team thread, are there certain team structures people would recommend to new players learning the game? Or are most of the teams there similar in terms of relative ease of use for new players?

Usually people recommend the TSS structures for starting out -- as it is the most versatile archetype that will teach you a lot about the meta. Certain kinds of offense teams like boomspam or phys magoff can also be easy to pick up, but they may limit you a bit if you spam only them while learning.

Would also recommend going to the Revival Tournaments discord for some more up to date and curated sample teams.

Hi. I see that there are lots of resources on teambuilding, but I was wondering if there are videos or annotated replays of good players using the sample teams and explaining their decisions. I've been trying out some sample teams, but I'm struggling to figure out which buttons are good to click at any given moment during the game so I get my ass kicked whether I play predictably or try to be clever. Maybe I just need more experience.

Maybe watch your own replays and think about what you could have done differently to win?

I attempted this but ran out of stamina. You can see it in my teambuilding guide thread on this post https://www.smogon.com/forums/threa...s-a-data-driven-approach.3654874/post-8242662
There are three annotated replays.

Wondering if mushi league is still a thing/how to join? I found a couple of discord links but they were expired and all the content on mushi league seems old. If it’s not a thing are there any other easily joinable tournaments which play regularly I could join? Edit: Thank you Goldmason who sent me a link
