The rules of the 2010 VGC state:

Pokémon may only use moves (including those learned in an earlier video game) that have been learned through one of the following methods:

  • By leveling up
  • By TM or HM
  • As an Egg move, through breeding
  • From a Move Tutor
  • Already learned by a Pokémon that was received at an official Pokémon event or promotion
  • Already learned by a Pokémon that was received from another Pokémon game (such as the Pikachu that knows Surf from Pokémon Battle Revolution)
  • By Smeargle's "Sketch" move (limited to the above moves learned by Pokémon from 001 to 493)

This obviously means that Pokémon with "illegal" moves gotten through the Ditto glitch are banned, even though they are possible without hacking. However, does this mean that you could use the Ditto glitch to obtain a Pokémon with an "illegal" combination of legal moves, such as Belly Drum + Aqua Jet Azumarill or Follow Me + Cross Chop Electivire (just examples), and it would be allowed?

No, it's not. Someone (I forget who) e-mailed Mike Liesik about that (and the Mimic Glitch), and he ran BD + AJ Azumarill through the hack checker. It came back as a hack.

Yeah, just off the top of my head, there's some part in the rules about where you can get your moves from. It's like:

  • Level up in any of the games

  • TM / HM / Tutor in any of the games
  • Any "special" move (like Gale of Darkness)
  • Smeargle using sketch
and that's about it

something to that effect

Yep, there are rules in the VGC to ban certain glitches (by stating all the methods that are allowed, with glitches not on the list). Even though the mimic glitch can be done without hacking, it's still not VGC-legal.

Smogon makes movesets and ev sets for ou, nu, uu, and little cup sinlges. A lot of people don't know about vgc so why not make vgc analyzes of pokemon commonly used? Or ou doubles analyzes. I'm not that good at singles and am a lot better at vgc. I think a lot of people would appreciate doubles analyzes too.

Not many people play VGC, and there isn't a plethora of battle statistics to analyze for it like there is for singles play.

I expect this to change somewhat when Shoddy Battle incorporates double battles.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHA

not true

We just haven't had like "shoddy data" to help out yet, but with new shoddy and PO and whatnot, that'll probably (hopefully) change.

Plus there are other sites with lots of VGC sets etc.

Mostly because VGC's rules change every year and because it's so event-based, people don't want to share their strategies until they've finished competing. For example, Huy, skarm, and zerowing did not share their team with anyone aside from their circle of friends until Seattle. Look at the effect of it. Everyone copies a team that's good.

Skarmbliss may have analyses, but they're all outdated or just plain not useful. I haven't seen a single update since I first visited the site back in April. Granted, I haven't been there in a month, but I doubt anything has changed.

If you want to start an analysis on a Pokemon, start up a "[Pokemon] Discussion" topic. I created one on Lugia a while back but we didn't get much on it.

Unfortunately, as Sixfortyfive pointed out, not many people play VGC outside the VGC season. Smogon's Shoddy server has 500+ people at any given time while Pokemon Online's VGC tier usually has a dozen people online at most these days.

Skarmbliss doesn't update that much. When I went thier yesterday and looked at one of the pokemon I used on my team they only had 2 versions of it. Modest and anti rain ludicolo. Practically no one I knows uses anti rain. I was a little disaponted they didn't have a stall ludicolo set. It works so much better than both combined for me. It single handly beat 2 full hp ubers before. I know it saved me in almost every battle. When I look at how many people are here at the vgc section, there aren't that many. So people probably won't respond much to new threads.
I don't like copying other people's teams. 3 out of 4 of my pokemon are uncommon in vgc. And I'm certain I'm one of the only people that has rain dance on a ludicolo. I don't like kyogre that much. And its nice to control the wheather without switching.
Well, I'll learn to play ou doubles sometime. It's better than singles for me. When vgc comes around again, who knows how much people will want to play with Black and White version.

Well, I just thought of a really cool VGC strategy and needed some opinions :)
(like a mini rmt)
I send in Giratina and Smeargle. Smeargle uses transform on Gira while Gira is holding a choice band. Now Smeargle has the boast from choice band without having the item and it's a gira now. 2 giratina's on the field, one banded and the other not with the boast :D.

EDIT: Instead of having 2 ubers, I can have 3. Sheer power will rip through teams. I just don't know when Smeargle selects a new move, does it have to stay with that move?

I never knew it would be so helpful in VGC :D If only I thought of this before the regionals were over >.<

Maybe a kyogre or palkia in the back with a metagross or something.

What do you guys think?

I think that the Choice Band boost only applies to the Pkmn holding it ._. ... I may be wrong, I'm going to check now.

EDIT AFTER CHECKING TRANSFORM PAGE:

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!! That effect is awesome!!!

Copied exactly from the page:

"Transforms into the target, copying its stats (except HP), moves (at 5 PP each), type, weight, and ability. The stats are copied exactly, without regard to EVs, IVs, and level. IVs of the target are copied for purposes of Hidden Power, as well. Transform copies the target's species, which means that DeapSeaScale, DeepSeaTooth, Light Ball, Metal Powder, Quick Powder, Soul Dew, and Thick Club activate only if the target is the correct species. Level is not copied, so a low level Pokemon does less damage than a high level Pokemon when using the same move (because the attacker's level is part of the damage formula).
Choice Band, Choice Scarf, and Choice Specs keep their boost upon Transforming. The Transforming Pokemon is allowed to select a new move.
If a Pokemon Transforms into Giratina-O, it will instantly revert to the altered forme of Giratina, as it is not holding the Griseous Orb item."

That's awesome ._.

EDIT AFTER HAVING THOUGHT ABOUT YOUR STRATEGY:

You could make Smeargle hold the Griseous Orb :D

Which nature is more effective for a defensive Lugia in VGC 2010 play - Bold or Calm? I have both HG and SS, so I want to get a Timid Lugia on one and a Bold/Calm Lugia on the other.

Smeargle wouldn't survive long enough to transform. At least in my experience using and fighting against smeargles, smeargle is usually up to something and gets taken out asap.

Funny, Transform Smeargle worked pretty well for me at Nationals - barring the the excessive freeze hax I got hit by - and it wasn't even hiding in the back! It made Marriland do a double-take when he looked over at my screen and saw two Dialgas.

Getting it to work really boils down to taking care of everything faster than it, including Hitmontop and Scarfed Kyogre, at least long enough for it to use Dark Void.

Yeah, paired with Icy Wind Smeargle can last a pretty good time using Detect + Dark Void.

i have always had a thing for smeargle [different from having a thing for DV smeargle, although for awhile now thats what he is known for] and in all the time i have used smeargle its alway been on the line of thaught as MattJ. i have never even thaught about smeargle lasting in a battle.

but now i am going to explore strats were he is meant to last long like Firestorm said. this might be good for me and who knows even affect my smeargle usage in serious competitions.
which brings me to my question. smogon lists smeargle in all its strats suggestions with jolly nature and i really cant see at the moment what giving smeargle a bulky set with a bulky nature does for strats where he is meant to last and DV or set up stuff or transform lead because he still remains to frail. does he retain his focus sash? because even with a bulky set he is just too soft base stats wise, hmm firestorm what nature did you give yours

Jolly. He lasts by not getting hit, not by being bulky! If you transform into something else, you will get the base stats of the other Pokemon but not HP which is a help, but I find it much more crucial to be fast enough to get off that Dark Void. I went with 252 Speed / 252 HP / 4 spdef iirc. Jolly nature and Focus Sash.

When were the VGC rules for VGC 2010 released? I would love to have a general estimate on when the rules for 2011's VGC will be released.

Japanese rules were released at the beginning of October. It wasn't confirmed that North America and Europe would be using the same rules until 2010 I believe. The actual dates and locations in the US and Europe were released in April about four weeks before the first event in Seattle.
