CAP 13 CAP 2 - Art Submissions

Apparently, my current art is so utterly mediocre that no one has even bothered to critique it. So, I came up with another possible idea. Let me know if you think something like the following would be worth drawing up.

A Pokémon that looks like a tombstone hovering in midair. The tombstone is weathered, and has cracks on it vaguely in the shape of a face. Wrapped around it is a vine that looks half dead. the vine's roots dangle below the Pokémon, and are dripping with ectoplasm.

I don't want to be a downer, but it sounds a little like Cofragigus, only more overgrown.

It's an interesting idea, Mektar, but it would be damn tough to make the presentation not seem like you're throwing Grass at a wall of Ghost, so to speak.

To me, the better submissions are not ones that have separate "Ghost" and "Grass" elements, but instead communicate a single being whose parts are all of a piece, or if not, that contribute directly to the feel or concept of the art– that's why I prefer submissions such as those of Paintseagull and DougJustDoug. Taking the latter as an example, it has parts that are decidedly distinct from the rest of the creature– namely the masks– but these parts contribute directly to the backstory and overall feel of the piece.

You're not going to create anything meaningful by slapping vines on a tombstone, in my opinion.

Here is my second attempt at this pokemon:
6eoi1u.jpg

I kept the hands and eyes the same, but in order for it all to fit in more, I got rid of the live tree, and replaced it with a dead one, to make it feel more ghostly. PLEASE CRITIQUE.

The picture should speak for itself, but in case it's not clear enough it's a dead, spooky tree that also resembles some kind of wizard / crazy old man.

Your original design was a gourd with eyes... I'm not really sure what to say of it other than build on the concept. It's really too basic to resemble a serious potential Pokémon. As for the underlined idea... Eh. It's not a horrible idea, but I could much sooner see it as a Rock/Ghost type, really. I think this CAP has gotten to the point where it's more or less just updates of each artist's creation anyway, so don't ditch the idea man. Save it for another day, like if we ever make some sort of unique spin-blocker. I really hope you don't think I'm shooting you down, because I'm just doing my best to give input.

I'm glad you guys took the time to respond, even though you were basically all negative. My failures will lead to successes over time as I improve as an artist through honest criticisms like yours. As my new idea is even worse, I'm probably going to just submit Uglimon and try to do better when the spriteing portion rolls around. Which is my main skill set anyway.

Thanks to all who commented on my design, I've tweaked it a bit:

http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/3776/grassghostcaptake3.png

I slimmed down the monster a bit and gave him some backstory:

Since he is a grass/ghost type with Sketch, This guy's job is to change the colors of the trees when fall rolls around. His paintbrush brings vibrant color to the forest, but is also a beautiful but somber harbinger of the death that comes with autumn and winter.(Although it ended up looking like he's lighting the tree on fire).

And if the stats end up being speed oriented, this design's pretty much hosed. Que sera, sera.

I do quite like this. It blends grass and ghost in an obvious but not conspicuous way. It takes what seems as a cliche concept - a haunted tree - and does something creative with it.

Thought your rastamon was pretty amusing too.

I like a lot of the entries but don't really have time to comment on everything. I like aragornbird's, although its issue is definitely whether or not it integrates the ghost typing. I like both of Calad's - they look like actual Pokemon and integrate the typings well. Even the pumpkin one manages to be original. paintsegull's is a very interesting concept and I'd like to see where it goes from here. Both of Yilx's, particularly the shrine maiden, are very good - integrate the types inconspicuously (I also like the idea of sketchmon not being green, so the flowers work well - some moves that will be sketched will seem more odd coming from a green mon than a red one, for example).

Damn, the art submissions started while I was on my Internet-less trip. I'll start sketching my concept up and post it asap. There are some really awesome concepts so far.

My original vampire thistle didn't garner much, if any, interest, so I've tried to develop it along some of the lines that Rising_Dusk suggested we try. Thistle flowers make excellent paintbrushes, so that was a natural progression. Much more difficult was feminising the design. I like rounder, cuter Pokemon (eg, Cofagrigus > Revenankh, although both are great), but I also didn't want to do something too "Morticia Adams/Gloria Swanson" in figure, because DougJustDoug already did that perfectly. She's a bit more Alice in Wonderland "Queen of Hearts" shaped than femme fatale shaped. (I keep being tempted to make her a lot plumper, but that would conflict with "thistle", I think. Thoughts?)

The result so far:

Alright, coloured him up.

Just to reiterate, it's a tree stump  with a ghost sealed within it. The ghost is furry to the touch, but is really more like an ectoplasmic liquid replacing the water that would be flowing through the phloem and xylem so that he can actually move around in his root-tentacled vessel. He can be a bit shy, or sneaky (if you see him that way!), and pops into his stump with his lid covering the top.

On another note, I really wish the colours came out brighter. I attempted to keep away from the usual ghost colours (purple-ish, black-ish, white-ish?) and opted for a quirky mixture of lime, teal, and orange. I left the roots the basic green and brown nature colours so that it deviate too much from the expected.

I tried to stay simple with the design, but I did also worry if it looked too simple; are the colours enough to show his typings well?

Alright, so after getting my tablet to work (and getting a better drawing software because Paint.NET sucks. :c) I was able to make another concept for the CAP. I ditched my pumpkin mainly because I feel like other people can do the pumpkin better than I can.

CAP2Design2.png

This is a rough cartoon-y sketch with quick coloring to show the different elements. Its main body is wooden and covered in leaves. He has a large vine covering his body, and has a lantern attached to his back. I ran out of ideas for it's hands so I just made them big leaves. His head is suppose to be a flower bud. I would like some critique on the design before I go ahead and color it properly/place more detail in the artwork. I will most likely keep the cartoony style of drawing, as I really like it.

Down the road I expect the CAP's flavor movepool to hinge on Sketch's presence and practically be defined by it, so I'd like to see that same thing here. This CAP presents a lot of unique opportunities for artists, such as creating a mono-gender CAP (which we've never done before) or even using a prop (which we've also never done)! I really want to discourage artists from drawing generic ghosts or grassy things, and would also like to really get the "pumpkin" designs out. They're so... Unoriginal and unexciting, in my opinion, and I know you're all capable of so much more. Think outside the box...

Either way, great job so far to everyone, and keep up the good work!

With this in mind, I work...

Churned this out as swiftly as possible, for some critique before I go too far.
ibymon is a hipster. She likes to be first in everything. She was the first of flowers to bud, the first of the species to be coveted, and the first one to have calamity befall her.
Anyways...
-The bud on her "tail" is used for sketch.
-I was aiming for a tween girl style mon, just a bit older than Kirla's age
-The red around the back is actually a flower. When the backshot comes out, it will be more visible. This is where more of the special based attacks will come from.
-The color scheme is a bit weird, and I would love help on that. I envisioned it to be simply a black dress, a white stalk, and a red flower (with some hints of red floating around for more contrast). As you can see, it didn't quite turn out that way.
-Last but not least, Yes, she is missing an arm. I remember vividly how surprised I was the first moment I laid eyes on the one legged Hoot-hoot. My incredulity quickly faded when I realized that the tiny owl truly wasn't missing a leg. The pokemon world seems to have a consistent symmetry when it comes to limbs, and I hope this deviation is a welcomed one (especially for a ghost mon!).

Please excuse the terrible art and commentary...

Now that I've got this picture-posting business down packed...here's my draft submission. Yeah its a self-harming tree which has never gotten over the psychological trauma of being hacked down with an axe. This was my first ever time using a decent painting program (sai) so I apologise that it's not as high quality as some of the stuff in this thread.

C + C much appreciated.

Goodness, lots of good designs this time round, too...

Antarctros's frankentree stands out to me quite a bit. It's a pretty cool design, but the ink part just seems a little forced, in my opinion.

Katakiri's sunflower pixie and Pravinoz's ibymon could really look awesome with a little more work. Sunflower pixie could use a little more detail, but she looks fine just as she is. I'd suggest posing her differently so her silhouette is more defined. Pravinoz's design reminds me of something from Yume Nikki and that is always a good thing, but you might want to work improving her overall appearance a little; it's a little vague to me at the moment.

tinytyranitar_t's has potential, but it looks like way too many things are happening at once in the sketch. Maybe you could try simplifying the patterns on the main body?

Bubbly, I think your design has a lot of character to it, despite being so simple. I can see it using everything from Blue Flare to Hi Jump Kick. It's also unique in that the only other Pokemon I can think of that's as lacking in distinct features such as eyes and a mouth is Starmie.

First of all, I'd like to apologise for the thread hogging earlier. Anyway, despite not doing much new to the tornado, I decided to follow up on an idea I had earlier when working on the tornado, and would like to get some opinions on it.

Waratahghostfloweroperamaiden.png

This is based on the waratah flower. These flowers are featured in some Australian Indigenous folklore, with stories including a bird attacked by a hawk, which landed on a flower, turning it's white petals red. Another is that a woman wearing a red coat with feathers fell in love with a warrior who did not return from battle. The woman died from grief and where she died the waratah flower grew. I decided to use these for inspiration, primarily focusing on the widow story, and attempted to blend it with a phantom actress, as Rising Dusk suggested earlier on page 7.

The paint/blood on the waratah head leaked from the flower, which came to life somehow, and now the ghost uses this paint/blood to create things like coats and props for it's dramatic, operatic performances.

Similar to my first picture of swirly, this image is just an idea of how I imagine it. The line art is horrible and inconsistent and it lack shadings entirely. I plan to give it shading, if it proves more popular than the tornado Pokemon.

After finishing the rough design, I became concerned that this may be too similar to the idea of the 'fallen from grace silent movie actress' that DougJustDoug has going on, as well as the paint/blood being perhaps too macabre. Regardless, I'd like to know whether I should stick with gusty or the waratah lady, and if there are any improvements I could make to either regarding design.

forestspirit-1.png

Shaded picture. The colours are mostly muted except for the splash of green and yellow to add some interest. I personally don't have any problem with using the colour black as a huge proportion of ghosts enjoy the colours black and purple; colours normally associated with dark and poison.

I'll try and get some supporting work done at some point.

Well, another lurker emerges from the dark....been here for a while, but I mostly just watched CAP. Mostly metagame stuff for me, but I finally decided to toss my two cents in, with my first ever serious piece of art haha. Well, the beginnings of the first one, at least.

CAP

If that didn't work, here's the link:
http://s1186.photobucket.com/albums/z376/sucker_puncher/CAP/?action=view&current=cap2wip.jpg

Thornmon here is a ghostly weed cloaked by a decievingly pretty flower. With her vine-arms able to absorb light (colors), she can copy any color and recreate it whenever she wants. Much like butterflies or lizards, disguise is the name of her game. She is generally docile, so she tries to avoid confrontations when possible. By absorbing colors through her arms, she is able to change the color of her flower to blend in with her surroundings, so well that sometimes she seems invisible.

EDIT: can someone help me out? my picture just does not want to show up.

A quick colour pencil rendering of my thistle vampire character Edit: With correct palette beside, I didn't have the right pencils to do the palette properly.

Some backstory:

"Ancient Celtic clans believed their most artistic matriarchs would return as [Insert 'mon Name]. These phantom Pokemon have many prickly thorns, but they are not poisonous. They have the potential to wield power over a great variety of attacks due to their creative natures, and often they will use these to baffle and terrify passers-by. They love to haunt elegant houses, fading in and out of view."

ThistlePaletteCorrection.jpg

Unfortunately I don't have pencils to give her the ideal palette, which is closer to the mouse drawn image I posted earlier. Here it's quite a bit brighter than I'd like, but I think it still works well.

Okay, I REALLY like Wyervii's. It looks like a (cute as fuck) ghost of a wandering nomad that lives in the forest. It looks simple-minded but mystical, which really works with the idea of sketchmon getting a limited movepool, (simple-minded) but egg move sketch (mystical aspect of the art, seems like a few of them have hidden abilities that could be interpreted as sketch)

Experimenting with colours.
#1 is the same except for a brighter red skirt-mouth and a slightly more plant-ish head colour.
#2 and #3 aim for the ghost-typing rather more. (I'm a little partial towards #3 now)
#4 mains the plant-typing with a withered leaf brown for the main body...
