CAP 5 CAP 5 - Sprite Submissions

But Wyverii's is so much better. :(

Just, crisper in general, I mean.

Next time Wyverii should submit her sprites later in the process so that they don't lose momentum like that!

I realize the quality of Wyverii's sprite, but I just can't stand the pose. Mainly the fact that it appears to be standing, despite getting the ability levitate. If the downward pointing claw were rotated so that it was pointing more inward, I might reconsider, but I just love the pose of DarthVader's

Don't say I never listen. Minor alterations to backsprite as well. I hope this will satisfy all the pose haters.

Hey KoA, good to see you back.
Syclar sprite? jk
Or are you just dropping by?

And Wyv the lower left claw (its right) looks a bit small and slightly out of place to me. Maybe a few pixels to the left?

Don't worry, I won't be able to submit a sprite this time around, but I am back. I can speak to you all only through the luxury of my phone and therefore have no way to upload pictures and sprites. :(

WB KoA. I guess that means no shoddy then =(

I think this is far and away the BEST in this thread. It has the most personality and the most "life"; all the other ones I've seen all looked quite lifeless and boring (just drifting there). This one (I think it's mostly the eyes) looks alien and menacing, and I really like that.

Also, best back sprite. Some of the other ones have the tentacle placed awkwardly such that it looks out of place, like an "obligatory tentacle" they added after-the-thought.

I hope yours wins!

I think the pose looks pretty good. I also like the way how you did the sides of the head on the back sprite. It's pretty interesting and very good!

I don't much care for the actual design of this poke, (it reminds me of a baby Regirock) but I'd have to say I like Wyverri's the most right about now. Watch out, I'll figure out some way to submit something for the next CaP, so be prepared. :>

The perspective on the new leg isn't working. It just looks like a small leg. I'm glad you decided to move away from the "dancer pose", but I don't think this is the best way to go. Maybe keep the same general leg position, but remove some or all of the perspective. I realize this might not be possible, since it may cause the legs to get too crowded. Just an idea to play with.

Your general shading and color choice is fantastic on both sprites. Your back sprite is my favorite of all the back sprites posted so far. This is going to be a tough sprite competition, but I expect your sprite to do very well, if not win it all.

Ah, who said I was worrying? ;3

Also, I didn't like the design either at first (I did vote for it yes, but only cause I liked Blogs even less) but after spriting it it grew on me

Speaking of which, I better peruse the art thread, that was always one of my favorite parts.

With a pinch of magic and a little luck, I should be back in full swing for the next CaP. :O

With the majority of users opting for either DarthVader317's or Wyverii's work, I'd like to point out which I support, and why, which includes some unopinionated observations that must be considered in the voting stage.

Here is a new shiny pallete. I'm not sure on what you guys meant about the eyes, so I just left them.

This is probably my final edit. Good luck guys.

KoA your back! Sweet. I hope to see you spriting next CaP.
First, let me say that both of these sprites are undeniably well done. However, one is closer to both the concept art (which is optional, but optimal, in my opinion) and the style used in D/P official sprites (which is certainly not optional). Firstly, the D/P official sprites rarely use more than two colors on a single surface. The only exceptions are instances where a Pokémon such as Graveler only has one or few main body colors to work with, and even then, the colors are used conservatively to emulate the anime style the spriters were attempting to convey. Because CAP 5 only has three main body colors, that left roughly 3 colors, including outline colors per body color. Wyverii's, with 11 colors, beat Vader's, with 14 colors, by remaining closer to that figure. Secondly, D/P sprites use only black and outline colors (which are classified as lines) for texturing. This is where my support went to Vader. His sprite remained true to this factor. Wyverii's, however, uses base, shadow, and highlight colors on the head as a means of texturing. I don't mean to say that it does not look aesthetically pleasing, but that it looks like it came from a game that relies heavily on the use of these classes of palette colors for texturing. It does not look like a D/P official sprite. Thirdly, an inconsistency that both back sprites possess is the overuse of dithering. D/P official sprites do not use nearly that much in proportion to space. Lastly, my support goes to Vader's because it does not vary substantially from the lineart or simplicity of the concept art as Wyverii's does. In conclusion, both sprites have their problems, but unfortunately, Wyverii's sprite's is much more obvious, along with the fact that when compared side-to-side with D/P official sprites, Vader's appears more consistent with the overall style.

As much as you can tell us about what you think an idea DP sprite looks like, I'm pretty sure you have not read some sort of Nintendo guide that tells how to perfectly create that style of sprite.

The eyes look like theyre glued to the head...I would recommend trying to inset them so they look like they won't fall off...I also liked the onld shiny better but others didn't ='(

Sadly Headpunch even though you can detect plenty of patterns used in the general D/P spriting style there's no way you can honestly say that that's what Nintendo's intention is. Also, after going purist last time and getting soundly trounced by Doug's sprite i'd have to say that the community dictates that they want more detail and if that's what they want that's what i'll give them. Regardless many of your points have already been broken within the official sprites.

It is not uncommon for sprites of many different colours to receive three shades to their main colour so more than two colours is not rare. Venusaur, a complex sprite, gets three for both main body and leaves. So long as any spriter doesn't go too nuts with the colours it should still ring true to the style. So generally it means 4 shades for each colour total including outline is not unacceptable so Darth Vader's sprite is absolutely fine in that regard.

Texturing through shading, though rare, does happen in D/P sprites. Beldum is a perfect example and is actually far more complex than this and since this is a material Pokemon it is not inappropriate.

Dithering occurs in many backsprites. How much is too much is up to your own opinion but since this Pokemon has many flat edges to its stones it seemed appropriate to use a little more than usual. There's no hard and fast rule to this, there's always been exceptions to the general rules we can see and i'm sure there will be many more. I don't pretend to know how Nintendo makes their sprites but i'll try and keep to the style as much as i'm able while catering to any requests from the community and i'm sure everybody else does so as well.
