[SET COMMENTS]

This set draws its inspiration from, of all Pokemon, Butterfree and its double powder combination. This set works by first putting the opposing Pokemon to sleep using Dark Void, as is to be expected from Darkrai. At this point, your opponent should most likely switch out, because staying in would mean Darkrai can set up a Nasty Plot or a Substitute. By using Thunder Wave the following turn, Darkrai can cripple two Pokemon on your opponent's team. This set works because Darkrai's common switch-ins are Choice Scarf wielders looking for a revenge kill, such as Palkia, Kyogre, and Genesect, as well as priority users, such as ExtremeKiller Arceus.

For the remaining two moveslots and item, this set has a few options. Dark Pulse will always fill one of these two slots, as its power with STAB and its ability to hit Ghost- and Psychic-types for super effective damage is impossible to pass up. The last slot can be filled with either Focus Blast or Nasty Plot. Focus Blast offers Darkrai awesome coverage with Dark Pulse, especially against Steel-types such as Dialga and Ferrothorn, as well as any Terrakion that it caught with Thunder Wave. Nasty Plot gives Darkrai a tool to sweep late-game, once its counters have been paralyzed or put to sleep. Mono-Dark coverage, while not optimal, is still usable, but be sure to include a teammate such as Fire Punch Groudon to get rid of Steel-types such as Dialga and Forretress. The item choice depends on what Darkrai's main goal is. If you want Darkrai to spread as much status as possible, then Focus Sash gives it insurance against faster threats and Dark Void's shaky accuracy. If you want some extra power, such as guaranteeing the OHKO against Mewtwo with Dark Pulse, then Life Orb is the superior choice. Leftovers provides a bit of longevity, but due to Darkrai's general frailty, it is inferior to the other two items listed.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Even though this set fills a more support-oriented role, its defenses are still too low for an all-out support spread, so the standard special attacker EV spread is the most effective. Maximum Speed investment takes advantage of Darkrai's blistering base 125 Speed stat, while max Special Attack investment allows it to hit as hard as possible. The extra Defense EV raises Genesect's Special Attack stat so that U-turn doesn't OHKO unless it has significant Attack investment; however, Bug Buzz will obviously OHKO Darkrai if Genesect carries it. This set pairs up well with slow, hard-hitters, such as Choice Specs Kyogre and Kyurem-W, and setup sweepers such as Dragon Dance Rayquaza. By paralyzing and weakening opposing Choice Scarf users, Darkrai provides its teammates a chance to sweep unhindered or use powerful attacks without being forced out by a faster threat.

Although Darkrai is fairly self-sufficient, it still appreciates teammates that can cover its weak spots. As it is using two reflectable status moves, Xatu and Espeon can initiate a deadly guessing game with Darkrai, where the one that predicts wrong is as good as dead. Bulky Water-types such as RestTalk Kyogre and Manaphy also give Darkrai some problems, as they can take its attacks all day and are indifferent to Dark Void and Thunder Wave. Because of that, Zekrom is a good teammate as it can KO all of them with a powerful Bolt Strike. Entry hazards break Darkrai's Focus Sash, so try and keep them off the field if Darkrai is holding one. If you lack a way to clear the field of hazards, then leading off with Darkrai is the best way to keep its Focus Sash intact. Perhaps the best way for your opponent to foil this set is by not switching out after being put to sleep; this does not only wastes you a turn, but it also alerts your opponent of your strategy, which gives the opponent time to avoid it.

I actually tried something like this before and it was actually really nice because EVERYONE loves to switch in the revenge killer into Darkrai (granted it was with Substitute and not Thunder Wave but close enough (OHKOing an Excadrill on the switch, or denting a Palkia is a little like crippling their speed stat...).

Something to mention is that unlike other Darkrai sets, you cannot bypass Chansey (granted its setup bait for everything, maybe a mention of how setup sweepers like DD Quaza enjoy beating Chansey and now don't have to worry about that scarf mon?!). Excadrill is a bit annoying for this Darkrai, since it can just switch in after something has fallen asleep and thanks to its electric-immunity, it can just run in and OHKO with Earthquake (must be wary of Focus Blast though (granted it probably won't even hit)). Sandstorm and hail in general are extremely annoying also, so Groudon might be worth a mention since he can beat lead Tyranitar (you already mentioned Kyogre) and Fire Punch Abomasnow if they do exist. You also can no longer beat Calm Mind Arceus one on one, if they already have a Calm Mind up UNLESS its Ghostceus.

Definetly worth a set IMO, functions waaay to differently from being a special sweeper and isn't like Trick or Treat at all, since your crippling Choice Scarf users, not walls.

priority users, who despise Thunder Wave
Actually Extremekiller and Bisharp probably like getting paralyzed since they don't have to get burned now. Their STAB priority IS their main attacking move anyway. The only one who despises this is Rayquaza and Giratina-O, I would change it to that but its up to you.

Can we not encourage more noob darkrai usage?

Will-o-wisp should be mentioned with twave to cripple things like EK arcues and scizor that don't care about para. Twave is more useful and should stay first, though

Most priority users don't take much from or resist Dark Pulse, such as Extreme Killer and Bisharp like you mentioned, with the exception of Giratina-o, who has no business switching in on Darkrai anyway. You also have stuff like E-Speed Rayquaza and Deoxys-A who are not mainly priority attackers

Can we not encourage more noob darkrai usage?

What exactly do you mean by "noob Darkrai usage"?

The main problem I have with Will-O-Wisp is that, like you said, Thunder Wave is a lot more useful. Will-O-Wisp only cripples physical attackers, and while that includes all the priority users, the most dangerous scarfers are pretty much all special. The Speed drop cripples everything, including those same physical attackers. Not just that, nobody likes a 25% chance to not move, except in the rare case of a defensive stall off. Will-O-Wisp is nice for making set-up bait out of physical attackers, but besides that it's almost always better to paralyze something, at least in my opinion.

I'd like to know what some of the QC members think about slashing it in though.

^XD

keep in mind WoW cripples every priority user in the tier, so if your team dislikes priority, ie. +2 speed boosters like RP groudon, terrakion, and smashpassers, wisp would support the team better than twave

edit: 80% accuracy dark void and 75% wisp makes for disappointing moments, though

I just want to leave this here:

Turn 5
princess briii called Giratina-O back!
princess briii sent out Forretress!
Darkrai used Dark Void!
The foe's Forretress fell asleep!
The foe's Forretress is tormented!
Turn 6
princess briii called Forretress back!
princess briii sent out Genesect!
The foe's Genesect's Download raised its Special Attack!
Darkrai used Thunder Wave!
The foe's Genesect was paralyzed! It may be unable to move!

I'll be back later with the check! So far, I'm really impressed!

just theorymoning here, but what about a sub / np / dark pulse / thunder wave set? it seems viable

Darkrai's niche is dark void. Without it, he won't be setting up a sub or nasty plot, or forcing a switch to something to twave.

furai did work with this vs me since my main darkrai check was Genesect. Good partners also include things that have similar checks to darkrai that appreciate the paralysis support, e.g. Mewtwo because of para'ing Gene. This is a cool set.

Slash in Nasty Plot with Focus Blast. You can still sweep with Dark Pulse alone, especially when the opponent's Scarf user, Shaymin-S or Mewtwo is paralyzed. Losing coverage sucks but Darkrai can sometimes sweep with mono-Dark type, like those Sub sets. Without Nasty Plot, Darkrai is a lot less threatening, especially against things such as Kyogre, Ho-Oh or Groudon.

Mention Life Orb as an alternative item. Without Life Orb, you can't even OHKO Mewtwo which is just embarrassing because you paralyze it but can't OHKO the opponent first. This Darkrai set can still work mid-game, sleep any opponent slower than you and paralyze the next likely switch in, which is probably a Scarf user / Mewtwo / Shaymin-S. Leftovers is another option that lets you survive longer in general which does work well against weaker opponents such as Ferrothorn and Forretress. Keep Focus Sash as the main option though.

Keep it as Darkrai's last set because prediction is needed to maximize this sets's efficiency. Approving this because Darkrai's main checks are Mewtwo / Shaymin-S / Scarf users. Defensive Kyogre and Manaphy will beat this set with ease so mention that.

In addition to what trickroom has said, stress how good Dragon Dance Rayquaza and Extreme Killer Arceus are as partners. Since they are checked to basically the same Choice Scarf users, namely Genesect, Terrakion, and Palkia, paralyzing them would make the sweep a lot more likely to happen.

Yeah, I want to see Nasty Plot being slashed with Focus Miss. I personally don't like my Darkrai being used as a pure status platform.

By paralyzing and weakening enemy Palkia and Latias, Darkrai provides Kyogre and Palkia with a chance to spam their incrediblyKyurem-W, and setup sweepers such as Dragon Dance Rayquaza. By paralyzing and weakening opposing Choice Scarf users, Darkrai provides its teammates a chance to sweep unhindered or use powerful Water-type moves. Set-up sweepers such as ExtremeKiller Arceus and Dragon Dance Rayquaza also benefit from the paralysis this set provides, as Terrakion and Palkia can no longer revenge kill themtacks without being forced out by a faster threat.
