Deoxys E Discussion

Should the SPEED Version of deoxys be allowed in standard play

  • Yes - it has sufficient counters

  • No - the movepool is still too wide and the "counters" don't wall deoxys good enough

Just because Shadow Ball says "It's super effective!" doesn't mean it lets Deoxys get past Cress. Depending on the spreads Shadow Ball is either a 3HKO or a 4HKO, and Cresselia can carry Thunder Wave to severely mess up Deoxys-S.

yes.. but deoxys-e does carry things like taunt and calm mind.. think about that.

You must realize however that Deoxys-S isn't extremely game-breaking. I'm telling you, moveslot syndrome is the thing that probably impacts Deoxys the most. You must remember that in MOST CASES THAT I HAVE SEEN ON SHODDY SO FAR, it turns out like this:

- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Psycho Boost / Shadow Ball
- Superpower

Because let's face reality. First off, Deoxys without Superpower is pretty much failure to do anything against Blssey. Second off, what I at least think Deoxys-S should be classified as is either somewhat similair to Electivire or simply a revenge-killer. Knock Off is definately a weakness, even if you catch him switching in (which unless you get a kill, will be rarely). Sandstorm will chip off 16% on Life Orb Deoxys. Thunder Wave and Trick Room are two of Deoxys S's biggest enemies, let's face it. And on a more serious note, Choice sets barely have any benefits I think. Locking yourself onto a move only to get screwed by a random Pursuit user that is either immune or resistant to your locked attacked is a bad situation no matter what.

I've faced it before. It's not the biggest threat to OU anyways. I fear Garchomp more than this thing any day.

[EDIT] To further go on, Calm Mind is STILL outclassed by Choice Specs set. Taunt is a rare sight anyways on him, yet is still useful. Deoxys-S isn't going to like repeated Charge Beams and Ice Beams though from a SleepTalk Cresselia.

can som1 post the "stall deoxys" moveset?

im guessing it's

recover
stealth rock
??? screens?
??? screens? a move?

I've been running a stall team with Deoxys-E and it's actually really effective. I can often eliminate my opponents Rapid Spinner quite quickly, and as soon as I get Toxic Spikes set up I bring in this:

Deoxys-E@Leftovers
Bold
252 HP / 64 Def / 156 SpDef / 36 Speed
Pressure
-Thunderbolt
-Cosmic Power
-Taunt
-Recover

304 HP is Deoxys-E's max, and a leftovers number. It's defenses are equal at 255 initially, though I'm still playing with the EV spread. After 1 Cosmic Power I get 382 in both defenses, and after 2 I have 510. The 36 speed EV's outspeed Adamant Scarfcross. Taunt is here to use against other Taunters, status pokemon and Heal Bell / Aromatherapy pokemon. Thunderbolt is used as my attack so I can hit Gyarados and other flying / levitating pokemon. This set mainly has problems with things like Heatran who are immune to Toxic Spikes and have solid defenses to take a few TBolts with. Taunt is a godsend on this set though, and I only wish I room for Taunt / Substitute. I can stop Blissey from using Aromatherapy on herself, and stop other Gyarados from Taunting / DDing, and completely shut down Breloom / Celebi from hitting me with Leech Seed.

What do you gain in using thunderbolt over Ice Beam? Besides Gyarados.

I OHKO Gyarados with it, and hit Forretress / Heatran for neutral damage instead of NFE. The only thing that stops it 100% is Gliscor.

EDIT- Thunderbolt also has 24 PP as opposed to Ice Beam's 16.

I would just run Toxic. Thunderbolt as a sole attacking move is kind of stupid considering your giving dangerous shit like Garchomp and Mamoswine absolutely free switch-ins, and you get completely fucked by Dugtrio. Toxic atleast does something to most things, although you still get into trouble with steels.

I don't know, stall Deoxys-E seems kind of pointless in principle when he has so many better things to do. If I were really intent on using it I would probably try something like (Substitute / Thunderbolt / Ice Beam) / Toxic / Recover / Taunt @ Leftovers. I could see that as being decently effective. Toxic can make pretty short work of almost any wall when combined with Taunt and Recover. Substitute seems almost essential on any Deoxys without Superpower so you don't get ruined by Pursuit.

The problem is that it only really works well against oponents that rely on either statusing or 3HKOing Deoxys to take it down (stuff like Bliss and Cress), but the trade off for this is that it allows alot more things to switch into since you lack the coverage. The good thing is that if you can manage to conceal your last move well, you may be able to simply scare off things like Gyara or Garchomp with the threat of their respective 4x weaknesses, but that only lasts so long. In the end I think stall Deoxys is still pretty inferior to the more offensively oriented sets

TBolt gives Garchomp a free switch in, but I can simply outstall it because of Toxic Spikes (and possibly Spike damage, if I get that set up). Metagross isn't affected by Toxic Spikes or Toxic, so I need something to bring it down, even if it is a 5HKO.

Believe me, stall Deoxys is not inferior, it just deals a lot of indirect damage instead of one or 2HKOing everything. Walls like Hippowdon, Cresselia and Blissey can't recover thanks to Taunt, and I can easily Pressure stall them out of PP rather quickly if they try to stay in since Taunt forces them to attack and drain there PP twice as fast normal, meaning as soon as they run out of attacks they start struggling, and thus KO themselves.

It has its own OU niche, late game sweeper works great, it is faster than Aerodactyl, and all though it doesn't have as much power on the physical side as Aero does, it uses both attack stats which means it can kill alot more Pokemon and isn't as easily walled. IMO Deoxys is just an improvement on Aero, although it doesn't COMPLETELY outclass our fossilized friend

I faced a pretty high ranked player yesterday who used the Taunt/Light Screen/Barrier/Recover Deoxys. Me having a starter tailored to take on other high-used starters had a problem here. I figured it was Orbed or Specced or Banded or anything so I went for a disabling move, only to be taunted. He then proceeded to set up Screens, which almost got his Dragonite to sweep the shit out of me.

Its a surprise when you first see it. Afterwards, you know what its gonna do and as such you could take it down easier. Still a bitch tho.

IMO the best thing about taunt is that it stops trick room. My trick room team was able to take on most deoxys with ease except the ones with taunt as it kinda ruines my entire team =/

I read a Shoddy Battle Log where a Deoxys-E outstalled a Spiritomb with Shadow Ball and Rest.

Deoxys@Leftovers
Careful
252 HP, 144 Sp. Def, 114 Def

Recover
Spikes / Taunt / Knock Off
Cosmic Power
Substitute

Basically, comes in on something it scares, then subs. After a few Cosmic Power's, its Subs become unbreakable, and it pressure stalls you to death. Remember, it outstalled a Spiritomb with Shadow Ball and Rest. o.0

It doesn't have the stats to be Uber, but it has the most diverse move pool ever. (Other than Mew, Smeargle etc.)

It can learn Spikes. >_>

EDIT: Just Trialed on Shoddy myself, I Pressure stalled a Starmie and Bronzong.

~M51

I run spikes/sub/psychic/knock off, and I find it works nicely at what I need it to do. Set up spikes, and remove opposing wall's items, so that my trifecta of entry hazards ear them down that much faster.

I faced a weird Deoxys today I think its set was
~Recover
~Counter
~Magic Coat
~ And something else
It done quite well against me because didn't expect a set like that at all, I didn't get to see much of it though.

The only i can see myself using Deoxys-E is
-Taunt
-Icy Wind
-Recover
-Toxic
Taunt screws over Aromatherapy/Heal Bell users, and Icy Wind nullifies speed of scarf users attempting to outspeed and Pursuit on the switch. Toxic will never beat Bliss though, unless its 1on1, where it can't switch out to avoid activate Natural Cure, and its Aromatherapy attempts will be Taunted away

nothing that uses a scarfed pursuit is faster than DX-E, not that it matters what speed you are if you're switching out of a hypothetical pursuit

i like to point out if you feel like rubbing cress against Deoxys-S cress can fire its own shadowballs back at it although that pushing it for cress who probably requires specs or calm mind for dealing a sure 2hko at least think but then again i don't have access to a solid DP calc at the moment
