Dex Bug Report & Structural Changes Thread

Just noting there is a disconnect between the Greninja-Ash/Bond distinction and their sprites on the dex. greninja-ash links redirect to greninja-bond, but the sprite filename is still greninja-ash.gif, resulting in a broken image link.

see: https://www.smogon.com/dex/sv/pokemon/greninja-bond/bh/

Similarly for the minisprites. Given changes in the mechanics and the various format scopes I'm not sure if it makes more sense to use the standard Greninja sprite or the Ash one.

When hovering over the word "Speed" on a Pokemon's base stats in a Smogon Dex entry, it will display the final Speed stat for each set of a Pokemon. This is a useful feature. However, it does not properly interact with the fact that a Pokemon's set can have multiple EV spreads. In particular, it will only pull the first EV spread and use that to compute the displayed Speed stat. This produces undesired outcomes in two situations:

1. Pokemon with two EV spreads with a single nature - example is SV VGC Volcarona (https://www.smogon.com/dex/sv/pokemon/volcarona/vgc/)

When hovering over Volcarona's Speed in its VGC page, it only shows 131 Speed, which is the final Speed stat from the first EV spread (84 Speed EVs) but doesn't show that for the second EV spread (148 Speed EVs).

2. Pokemon with two EV spreads with two natures - example is DP Ubers Mixed Attacker Giratina-Origin (https://www.smogon.com/dex/dp/pokemon/giratina-origin/)

When hovering over Giratina-O's Speed in its Ubers page, it will display a final Speed stat for it using a Rash nature and one for it using a Naive nature. However, both natures pull from its first EV spread, and based on the set itself, the Naive nature is meant to correspond with the EV spread with 252 Speed EVs instead of the one with 60 Speed EVs.

If you find a bug with the dex, post it here!

Make sure that what you post is a bug and not a complaint or feature request. Similarly, post any content errors in analyses in the small changes thread; this thread is intended for issues that not any badgeholder or staff member can fix.

Other things that are fine to be posted in this thread:
- Broken sprites / models;
- Broken links;
- Database errors (e.g. in Pokemon info like typings, abilities, and learnsets).

Be aware that the Dex is currently going through an overhaul, so things are actively being worked on, and certain issues are already being addressed as we speak.
Weather Ball, Skitter Smack, and Bug Bite are listed as illegal moves for Pokeball-Pattern Vivillon (they're available for the other forms). Pokeball Vivillon can learn all of these in-game by TM.

Is this how Smeargle's learnset is supposed to look? Being able to learn non-sketch moves?
I see this in BW, XY, and SM

Compare to SV and all other gens, which (correctly?) lists its only move as Sketch
This is from various events during Gen 5 and Gen 6, where Smeargle was given out with specific moves/events - specifically the 2013 World Championships Smeargle and what Bulbapedia calls the Pokémon EXPO Gym Smeargle. Since there was a legitimately obtainable Smeargle with those combinations of moves (Odor Sleuth via the first one, for example), Smeargle is considered to have "learnt" those moves, since it came with those moves and isn't taught via Sketch by the player.

Hi, having an issue with the smogdex editor. When using the editor on a device that can't run AdBlock (workplace, etc) the ads currently running are able to block off portions of the editor, preventing the submission of edits and recovery of drafts, as well as seeing the bottom of your text while editing. This seems to be semi random as some Ads are smaller, but I've been attempting to do this for the last 25 minutes with no sign of letting up. There is an extremely brief time between Ads which could allow for clicking, however it tends to be so fast you can't react and click in time. I don't know if this is region specific or something else, but is there a way what Ads are ran on the smogdex could be placed in a less intrusive area of the screen?

Looking at the source code, I think it's a bug that you're seeing ads at all in this scenario

When searching for a Pokemon on the Smogon Dex, the placement of abilities can confuse people who are trying to identify abilities. Let's take a look at this interaction I had in the Smogon Discord:
Screenshot from 2025-11-26 11-30-42.png

Because Cursed Body is grouped with Insomnia, this user assumed that Cursed Body is Banette's secondary ability and Frisk is Banette's hidden ability. However, the inverse is true; Banette's secondary ability is Frisk and its hidden ability is Cursed Body. I think that grouping the two non-hidden abilities in the same column makes it easier to identify which abilities are hidden abilities and which are not. For Quagsire (a Pokemon that uses both its non-hidden and hidden abilities, this would look like:
1764185915130.png

instead of

Why are abilities arranged like this now? I thought it might be alphabetical, but frisk is before insomnia in the alphabet.

Hi, sorry if this isn't the right place for this, but some of us in the randbats lobby on Showdown found something that I think needs to be checked on:

Smogon recognizes Hydro Steam as a move that thaws the user (https://www.smogon.com/dex/sv/moves/hydro-steam/). This is not consistent with anything any of us can find in other sources (bulbapedia, serebii, pokemondb, etc.). There is no reference that we can find that indicates this move should have this property.

I'm not assuming that Smogon's treatment of this move is erroneous--I don't personally own Pokemon Scarlet/Violet so I cannot test myself (and it's not easy to get frozen on command...). Maybe it's in the game's code and I'm just not aware. But it does seem like the sort of move flag that could have been ported over from Scald since those moves share a lot of properties.

Can somebody check whether this needs to be changed, and if not, provide the source that shows the move should have this property? If it does have the self thaw property, then that information should probably be cascaded to other online resources about the move!
