DSi. What do you think?

But, don't forget about the 'Virtual Console' thing coming! That reason alone might make me get the DSi because I've been craving some LoZ: Oracle of Ages and Pokemon G/S/C! The DS can't play those games, so even though I own them (I do own Seasons and Crystal, at least), I can't play them!

I'm not positive that they're going to do make downloadable GB/GBC games, but... if they do, I'm gonna be first in line to get a DSi. :P

I'm not sure if I'm going to get one or not. I doubt it, unless they start making a shitload of DSi exclusive games.

I'll get one in like 6-12 months or so. I never got a DS Lite so this doesn't really sting like it probably does to others who are looking at this as a pretty mediocre upgrade (considering its cost).

You can trade in your DS Lite at Game and get the DSi half price, but that is still £75. For that much money, I would expect more than:

* An average camera
* Some wifi goodies
* 4g less weight
* 0.25 inch larger screen
* 3mm less depth
* 5 hours less battery life
* No GBA compatability

Admittedly I was slightly tempted by its shininess and some of the above, but I thought better of it.

I kinda hate it for being region locked as many of my games are from the UK.
Or if that's not the case, I still want to play my GBA games...

How many times do we have to say it?

THE DSi IS NOT REGION LOCKED!

The DSWare will be locked, but you'll just have to wait for those to get released on its Channel. See Wii VC for similar titles/junk.

You should at least get it before they stop offering the free 1000 DS Points though. I doubt it'll see a price drop this year.

Um..
Game Boy: Region-Free
Game Boy Pocket: Region-Free
Game Boy Color: Region-Free
Game Boy Advance: Region-Free
Game Boy Advance SP: Region-Free
Game Boy Micro: Region-Free
Nintendo DS: Region-Free
DS Lite: Region-Free
DSi: ???

What makes you think ??? is "Region-Locked"? Downloaded games/applications from their online store are the only things that will be region-locked and that doesn't matter because you don't have any DSiWare games.

Edit: Sonuiiiiiiissssss >:(

Oh yes it can.

I've actually been using Goomba Color to play a lot of old Game Boy games on my GBA SP (which is preferable to using actual game cartridges because unlike the GB-sized cartridges, my flashcart doesn't stick out). I could just as easily have been using my DS lite (which has a slot to support the device, unlike the DSi) for that, although given that I have Lameboy on my slot-1 card it wouldn't make very much sense.

The DSi is marked for $170. (Price difference of $40 from the DS lite.) Getting a GBA cart to run Goomba Color on costs significantly less than $40, and most slot-1 DS cards aren't terribly expensive these days either. (I paid a total of $60 for mine, which included the cost of a 4 GB microSD card. And that almost a year ago, the same can be had for significantly less these days.) The cost of getting a slot-1 card is surely less than the cost of "upgrading" a DS lite to a DSi with Gamestop ($70 last time I checked).

It's also worth noting that SNES emulation on the DS platform, while nowhere near perfect, is still good enough to make some games playable. It's not horribly reliable; the text on Secret of Mana was completely unreadable. However, I was able to enjoy Super Metroid and Umihara Kawase without any glitches that affected gameplay.

In conclusion, I don't see any reason to buy the same game from Nintendo twice. I already spent hundreds of dollars on my Game Boy library, why would I want to spend any more money?

Yeah Wishy, fuck legitimate complaints!! Clearly we are all merely whiny brats who cannot appreciate the good gifts granted to us by the world! The DS Lite is a system that should not exist - when you reduce usability and (which the GBA slot being taken away and the lower battery life very much do), then you have to be providing something incredible to make up for this degeneration. A truly shitty camera does not make up for this, and then DSi exclusive games are another negative.

No, all I was saying is that people need to get over the fact that the GBA slot was removed. It's time to put it to rest, and like I said I doubt the majority of people even played GBA games anymore. The minute you take something back, every gets their panties in a knot.

Furthermore, before you label the DSi as a 'useless upgrade' you might want to give it some time to actually flourish. With all this talk about DSi exclusive games, and the online store you don't know how great it might actually become. (Or, alternatively bad. Does saying that make you happy? ;o)

People seem to want to get rid of the DSi because it hasn't shocked just yet. You ever know.

And honestly, I doubt many people will even care about the GBA playback after awhile if it hits off.

I'm not saying the DSi is some amazing piece of hardware, but nor is a pile of crap. Wait and see...

We have roms. The only way the DSi does shit is if massive wireless fidelity functions are added and could not for some reason also be then R4ed or otherwise easily carted (I do not know that much about flash carting because there has been little reason to cart anything except games needing both screens or have massive wireless fidelity usefulness).

The numbers tell a different story. Last year, between April and December Nintendo sold more than half a million GBA games. That's pretty darn good for a system that's over eight years old at this point, and it's definitely enough to counter the claim that "people don't even play GBA games anymore." Oh, and that figure doesn't include sales of used games, which are reportedly increasing (as sales of new games fall due to the state of the economy).

Plus, that's only games that were BOUGHT last year. All of the games were bought the year before that (during which over nine million GBA games were sold) will probably continue to be played into 2009.

Realize that the economy in the United States (where most DS units are sold, if I'm not mistaken) is in pretty bad shape. Already the sales of used games have been increasing. Why? Because people are realizing that they don't need to pay $60 for a new game when they can get a used game for $35. What do you think people are going to do when they realize that used GBA games can be had for $10 or less in most cases?

But let's completely ignore that fact and consider that the 19th best selling DS game in North America REQUIRES a GBA slot to play. It's not like Pokemon where the GBA slot can optionally be used to add gameplay elements. Either you have a GBA slot, or you don't play.

I might buy the DSi simply because the speakers on my DS Lite are starting to malfunction (the sound drops and you can barely hear sound effects when it happens). I still have my GBA SP for GBA games, and lately I have been playing GB/GBA games on my PSP anyway =D

What games are even available to download at the DSi shop channel?
Nintendo Wikia said:
Nintendo has announced their launch lineup for DSiWare come the sixth. While not as exciting as the WiiWare launch, the DSiWare launch does still have some appealing looking titles in the bunch. They include:
  • WarioWare Snapped!
  • Bird & Beans
  • Brain Age Express: Math
  • Master of Illusion Express: Funny Face
  • Art Style: AQUIA

I probably won't buy a DSi, cause I play GBA games (including Pokemon) a lot on my DS and the lack of a GBA slot would mean I would have to dig up my old GBA. Instead, I am looking forward to and praying that the DS Lite prices go down so I can get one cheaper :D.

I think the DSi was just Nintendo's way to aim the DS even more towards average quasi-gamer (who won't care about playing GBA) and to fight the PSP in terms of media playing and internet capabilities.

Okok, touche.

We'll just have to wait and see if the DSi is cover losing the GBA slot. Personally, if DSiWare is actually good I believe it can but, again, who knows.

Also according to Reggie, the DSi has more pre-orders than the Wii did. There is a link to the interview here.

Wait, the DSi will NOT have a GBA slot? Well, looks like I won't be getting one after all, then, as I can only afford it by trading in my only DS to cut its price in half...

Most Likely I'm not going to buy it. The fact that they added a camera, mp3, ect. does not appeal to me. I can't imagine going to college and being like "Group Photo!!" and whipping out a DSi To take it...

But that's just me. =3

idk if im gonna get dsi or just a used DsL, my freind is offering me his for hardly 50$, and a flashcart for 10$=60$. Getting the Dsi doesnt seem worth it...

I have made my choice, i won't get it. It's a gimmick and really not worth it, i don't complain about the GBA slot though, i love to play Golden Sun but that's about it.

If something exclusive for the DSi (DSi Ware, other) is impossible to let it pass i may get it! But for now i really don't feel any reason. I already have a camera and a music player ;).
