Event Discussion

Oh, Serebii has the Ability/Item/Move info on the Mythical Pokemon being given:

NOTE: All of them are at Level 100.

Mew: Ability: Synchronize. No item. Move: Pound.
Celebi: Ability: Natural Cure. No item. Moves: Confusion, Recover, Heal Bell, & Safeguard.
Jirachi: Ability: Serene Grace. No item. Moves: Wish, Confusion, & Rest.
Darkrai: Ability: Bad Dreams. Item: Enigma Berry. Moves: Dark Void, Ominous Wind, Nightmare, & Feint Attack.
Manaphy: Ability: Hydration. Item: King's Rock. Moves: Tail Glow, Bubble, & Water Sport.
Shaymin: Ability: Natural Cure. Item: Micle Berry. Moves: Seed Flare, Aromatherapy, Substitute, & Energy Ball.
Arceus: Ability: Multitype. No item. Moves: Judgement, Recover, Hyper Beam, & Perish Song.
Victini: Ability: Victory Star. No item. Moves: Incinerate, Quick Attack, Endure, & Confusion.
Keldeo: Ability: Justified. Item: PP Max. Moves: Aqua Jet, Leer, Double Kick, & Bubble Beam.
Genesect: Ability: Download. No item. Moves: Techno Blast, Magnet Bomb, Solar Beam, & Signal Beam.
Meloetta: Ability: Serene Grace. Item: PP Max. Moves: Quick Attack, Confusion, Round.

... Okay, can I meet whoever made these decisions and SLAP THE STUPID OUT of them?! I could criticize them in detail, but I can sum it all up in two:

1. Why are only some of them holding items? Like if you can't think of a good item to give them how about just one of the rare berries? Actually scratch that, give them all rare berries. Like they have the Micle and Enigma Berry, how about the Rowap, Jaboca, and Custap (heck, you could even have some holding a Starf and Lansat since they're hard to get).
2. Okay, you don't want to give them any special moves, that's fine. But still what in the world are with those movesets? Some don't have a full 4, others are moves they first learn, except others have moves from all over their movepool, Victini doesn't have V-Create, and Shaymin has Aromatherapy which it doesn't learn!
Just out of curiosity what is Serebii's source for the event details? From my understanding there is no official source citing this information.

Am I the only one who is just happy for this? I mean, wow I haven't ever been able to legally own over half of these pokemon, and for the first time in forever I might be able to finish a pokedex.

Yeah, no V-create is a bummer and I'll have to grind a few more heart scales, but still this is a very nice gift from Gamefreak where in past years they used to make collecting these 'mons an exercise in frustration. Or hacking.

Yeah, but it still is just odd. Especially since some of us do have them (like me). I am going to try to get a decent Mew, Arceus, Keldeo, Jirachi, and maybe a Darkrai (I have a Shiny German one with Modest nature, so I can't really complain since I only use it for fun).

Well, to be fair, it is unbelievably easy to get a legit one of any of those that is just for pokedex. It also is very odd that Victini doesn't at least have V-Create (still would be useless without Blot Strike or some of its other event only moves). Also, I am overall happy over this. Lots of good mons that I can get more of for different sets. It is just saddening that Victini remains exclusively competitively usable from one Japanese only event.

True, honestly my main problem is Victini with no V-Create. All the others there's no problem, the only way to improve them would be giving them a special move they can't normally learn (which has been done for some of them like Darkrai and Arceus but generally those were other super powerful moves which competitive the Pokemon didn't really use). Victini is the only one who has something it exclusively can only get through an Event (which was an okay gimmick but by Gen VI I think the characters who can teach Secret Sword and Relic Dance to Keldeo and Meloetta their special moves should also be able to teach V-Create to Victini (and I wouldn't be surprised if in XY2/Z that person will have Dragon Ascent added so why not also V-Create?)). Oh well, I guess I can always go for a Special oriented Victini.

Oh, and Japan got a Pentagon legal V-Create Victini via that Scrap Card promotion. I know something like that doesn't really have a way of translating (and I'm sure the participating companies have to ask to be a part of it; possibly paying a fee), but at least try something else like put a batch of merchandise based on the Mythical Pokemon and over a certain amount you also get a serial code for one of them.

How, why and when are those being given out?

I mentioned it in one of my posts before that one.

The Legendary Birds are getting their Hidden Abilities released in Japan soon.

Hm, I wonder if we'll be getting that, let's see what Serebii says:

First, the Pokemon Scrap campaign is returning to Japan and in this campaign, a Shiny Eevee will be distributed, as will Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres with their Hidden Abilities, which were previously unavailable.

Well, well, well, if it isn't the promotion that I complained about only a post ago. So now its a Shiny Eevee, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres (keep on milking that Gen I nostalgia for the 20th Anniversary). I highly doubt if we didn't somehow get a related event that could have given us the Mythical Pokemon than I doubt this one is making it over too.

Unless the Eevee has its Hidden Ability, most won't care, as most of the relevant Eeveeloutions require their hidden ability to be of any use(or don't have a useful ability period). Of the legendary burds, for the most part, their HAs are pretty useless. Most people will still prefer their standard abilities(except maybe Moltres) due to them being heavily luck-based. Of course, if they have event exclusive moves(like a Zapdos with a usable Flying STAB) then people may have an actual reason to get them for anything other than their collection.

Nnnnnot really. Only Sylveon and Espeon really care about having their Hidden Ability and in the case of the original three eeveelutions (and to an extent Umbreon and Leafeon) their HAs are considered outright inferior.

Which is why I said relevant. And mentioned not having a useful ability otherwise. Honestly though, unless there's something REALLY special about this eevee, I doubt I'll be trying to get a shiny one when I can breed one within a week.

What could possibly make an Eevee relevant? The only possible thing I could think of would be giving it Sacred Fire to evolve into a Flareon or something

I forgot to mention, the distribution for the Birds and Shiny Eevee starts on March 1.

And now I'm not as excited. Not only are they not battle ready, but they are all at level 100, so I can't have any fun raising them!

I get Mew's only move being Pound. If you exploited the Mew Glitch in RBY to get a level 1 Mew and then used the underflow glitch to get it to 100, it would skip its entire level-up movepool, only getting Pound.

What the hell it up with the others, though?

It'd be nice if I could get one of the Legendary Birds just for the sake of using their Hidden Abilities, since we now officially have another Pokémon with Flame Body + Fly. Static Zapdos will be a fun surprise to use in battle, too.

As for those other mythical Pokémon, there's a neatly organized pattern in their distribution order, which makes the getting them seem less daunting:
(Mew) Serial Code (Celebi) Wi-fi (Jirachi) Wi-fi
(Darkrai) Serial Code (Manaphy) Wi-fi (Shaymin) Wi-fi
(Arceus) Serial Code (Victini) Wi-fi (Keldeo) Wi-fi
(Genesect) Serial Code (Meloetta) Wi-fi (if they only had one right now in January...)

I myself am looking forward to getting the Unova 'mons because I never owned a Gen 5 game and because Keldeo is a cool 'mon. The 'mon that disappointed me most is Jirachi, not because of a lack of a hold item but because it usually gets the exclusive event moves like Draco Meteor and Moonblast. The throwback to movie Shaymin is nice, though.

Sadly Shiny Event Pokemon are mostly trophies unless you're willing to keep resetting until you get one with workable IVs. You can argue the same for Legendaries, but they made it easier to get them with workable IVs and since you can't breed them the only way to get one with good IVs is by resetting one, especially if you got one in an event (if anything an Event one is easier since you don't have to bother catching it first and flying to where the IV checker is).

Can someone kindly explain to me what "Pokemon Scrap" is?

Here's an article that best explains in.

Special Victini wants Blue Flare which is another event only move. Can't think of a single use for it outside of dex/event collections.

I'd argue that both Zapdos' and Moltres' HA's are worth the rng chance. Pressure does not do much at all, where as Static or Flame Body kicking in can win you the game or at least change the tide of battle pretty dam easily. It is a shame that they are being given out through Poke Scrap, which means they have next to zero chance of seeing a US release.
