Final Grades/GPA thread/School/University Discussion

Well, I've been doing some History and Music revision, and got my exam grades to a A and a B respectively. Looks good, especially with A* level coursework bumping it all up, especially in the case of Music.

Just did some M1 Practice papers too. And pulled a 99/100 out of my ear. And consider I am doing this a year early. :)

But ehhh...... Christ's Hospital still wants 6 A's out of my GCSEs if I'm to keep my scholarship, but let's hope for the best.

Applying for Student Finance. It appears that they have listed about ten different fees that I have to pay...consequently confusing the crap out of me.

So..... Ivy league decisions, I can't get into Princeton's website because it got flooded. I applied to Yale too... are they not releasing them until later tonight?

edit: double rejected, bitches

final tally: njit, rutgers, tcnj, lehigh, lafayette. I probably should've done more research and applied to schools between Lehigh and Ivies (like Tufts or BC) but meh, I'm ok with Lehigh.

Don't worry. We both got screwed. Cept I got screwed at the lower tier ones too lmao.

I'm sure you'll go somewhere good with a good scholarship

Well I got more than $30,000 from both Lehigh and Lafayette, but they're both mad expensive already. TCNJ gave me the most they offer too which is nice. I'm between Lehigh and TCNJ. TCNJ would be really close to home which would be nice, lehigh is a tad farther and a better school.

Do you have a final tally on your schools Eraddd?

I decided to reject Princeton, Yale, and Brown. I know this sounds funny--but I got a really good impression from the University of Iowa when I visited. It's one of those gut instincts. I don't think I'd be happy at a really competitive, cutthroat place.

Now we'll never meet! :-(

Yeah, rejected at Northwestern, U Chicago, JHU, and Harvard LOL.
Accepted at McGill and Waterloo
Still waiting on U Toronto and SFU

Try quintuple rejected. Fuck this shit, if you have 30K applicants you don't think you should accept more of them? Yeah I'm pretty bitter but I think I have the right to be.

Looks like Tufts for me.

Manhug :D

Don't worry, we'll see em in grad school. I'm just using these rejections as motivation to get my ass into grad school in the states.

Officially going to UW-Madison. Probable major is in the realm of Econ/Business/Actuarial Science.

Yup, certainly a terrible year to apply to Brown. Also got rejected at Dartmouth.

I got into BC which was my #1 but they gave me 6k in financial aid, which is nowhere close to what it needed to be. Most likely I am going to Villanova and will have around a 20k debt by the time I graduate.

I'm not too thrilled at the moment.

i have officially decided to postpone post-sceondary education for another year. until then, i think i'll do another semester/year of high and maybe get a part-time job... bleh.

mostly i don't want to go on because i can fucking decide where i want to go. i ended up not applying anywhere and the deadline has just passed.

i was mostly considering u of toronto, carleton, ottawau, and mcgill :/

Good idea for making this choice. I made the same decision last year when I completed grade 12. Taking an extra semester is a really good idea, especially if you're a lazy-ass like I was in grade 12. The extra semester I took this year was extremely helpful because I really turned my act around and put some effort into school, and as a result my average increased by a good 10%. A lot of people aren't as prepared for university as they used to be, at least in Ontario, since there's no longer any grade 13. Because of this, the gap between grade 12 and 1st year is pretty big, so it's never a bad idea to take an extra semester and get yourself extra prepared. During your time off (if you don't take an entire year), you can always revise the subject that you're going to take in university, so you'll know your shit even better than people who are going there straight from their graduating year.

Man this year was nuts for college, practically like every school had a >10% increase in applications, and some closer to 20% or 30% increase (Chicago, Brown, Princeton). When schools are getting 30k+ applications it really does start to become nothing more than a lottery.

How'd you do? Did you get accepted to Yale?

nahh, i got accepted early decision to Brown back in December. Good thing too because I don't know exactly how much my application would have stood out next to ~30k others during regular decision :/

Hey, awesome work you guys. Really surprised at all the hard workers who got into top tier universities. For you guys who are younger follow their example. I am being serious. HS is so easy with their personal teachers, way more lax environment, and just easier course work/tests. I got a 3.5 average in HS with an 1800 SAT, but I didn't try or put much effort at all into school. If I had tried I would be in an IVY league right now, but instead I put my priorities elsewhere.

HS is so much easier than University. If only I had listened to my parents. I am lucky I got into an 11th rank school for my major, but man...listen to your parents. *Note I went to a highly competitive ranked HS so no if ands or butts about the setting.

It is kinda sad seeing my bro work his ass off in school and play two sports, while I did almost nothing in HS(I played BBall for a couple of years, but I quit). Just take advantage of what you have now.

University becomes the "Curve". Think about it this way, You are competing with yourself right now. You have a problem you have teacher's there and a school to help you. You have parents to guide you. The sources are everywhere. When you go to the next level it is you, a lecturer, and a curve.

Thank you so much for your advice :). I do have to mention, though, that I go to a highly competitive high school here in the United States, and I got into Wharton at Penn with a 3.5 unweighted GPA and a 2120 SAT. It's not all about the grades. After a flop GPA during my freshman year of high school, I worked my ass off to get a 4.0 the next three years, with around 10 APs total. And, of course, community service. It is most important, and my application is evidence of that. If I hadn't dedicated as much time to community service and helping others as I did during my high school career by raising over $12,000 for my favorite charity, I would have never gotten in. It's all about passion, and not all about numbers (grades, scores). Not that I think I'm special (wink, wink) but one also has to set themselves apart in their application; be unique, different, and daring. That is what I did, to make up for my GPA. So... it's not all about working hard to get the highest credentials, but working smart to get the rest.

Surgo don't be sad, it was just an April Fools joke :( I am most likely going to Princeton

I know that since you're going to grad school your area of specialization is of primary importance, but are there any other reasons why you're going to Princeton? Weather, social life, or anything like that?

I got into Princeton too and I'm trying to decide whether I should stump up the money to go :/

Well, I know that AS Maths a year early isn't exactly my biggest priority...
But WHY AM I REVISING IT.

But hey;
C2 practice results: 77, 79, 81.
M1 practive results: 93, 89, 90.

And now. more music listening/appraising revision.

Also got Applied Chemistry results a few days ago and forgot to post; 93/100; A*

My decision was primarily made based on the quality of the CS dept, professors, students. Princeton is an absolutely incredible institution, and I'm sorry you're in this position. There were a few pluses outside of the CS dept: the weather is nice, and its not a big city (which is a plus to me!). The ice cream is really great (go to the bent spoon). It's close to NYC and Philadelphia. I don't really care about social life, although everyone in the CS dept is friendly.

The negatives: it's expensive. Outside of Princeton, New Jersey is a shit hole. Everyone is rich.

Have you visited? If you have any questions, I can try to answer them. If you want to major in CS, you can't do better than Princeton for undergrad. That's true for pretty much anything else, though ;/

I got into Princeton as an international, and I've never even been to the US before, so I don't really have specific questions to ask as I can't compare New Jersey to any other place in the US lol. Thanks for the heads up about NJ being expensive though; I'm only paying about 30% of Princeton fees but that's still quite a burden, so I guess I'll have to budget if I go. I can't really comment on the location since I'm not very sure where Princeton is yet, though it's nice to hear NYC is close by!

I don't know too many people who got into Princeton, but some alumni who I talked to mentioned that Princeton can be somewhat elitist; do you think that's true?

I agree you can't do much better than Princeton for academics; I'm probably going to major in physics, and Princeton is definitely one of the best places to do that.

Yeah, community service. I volunteered at a hospital for a couple of years. It felt very good to help people, but it was discouraging seeing half the people there only doing it to get into University and had no passion for what they were doing.
