Final Grades/GPA thread/School/University Discussion

From what I've gathered the only purpose of ECs is an excuse for universities to continue being selective in the admissions process. It's a tie-breaker that only exists as a tie-breaker for the purpose of finding further reason to discriminate one student from the next, not because it stands to make university better or you better. It might have that effect I don't know (at best we can make conjecture), but I doubt that is their purpose for admissions.

QFT (If I can get away with saying that without an infraction)

My GPA is okay but I still made USC I am VERY excited to go! The only problem I have is the financial aid... the FAFSA stuff doesn't make sense to me at all and my parents are clueless about it too. I turned it in in February but it says that I haven't? Or maybe they haven't updated?

I did alright besides P.E. I screwed the theory up, I could of done better in geography for sure. All and All I guess it's not so bad, and the parentals dont mind so much lol.

Probably going to Northeastern University next year in Boston, MA.

Does anyone in the work force have any comments about the school's reputation and its co-op (internship) program? Just wondering if people have good or bad things to say about the school in general or if it's a generally unknown.

EDIT: I plan to be a mechanical engineer.
No one?

Also, I don't know anyone who does extracurriculars just to do extracurriculars. I'm 3rd in my class of 800+, I do well in track, and am a member of a few clubs that I go to when I have time for (JLU, which is "Just Like Us" for helping special ed. kids, Philosophy Club, and Strategic Games Club) I also volunteer at my church, though I would not necessarily call myself overly-religious, and work at a Rec program.

I've never done any of that "for college" and no one that I work with does it "for college". I didn't apply to an Ivy, I didn't want to. I didn't do all those things to increase my chances for getting into an Ivy. All of you are seriously over-exaggerating how many kids only join clubs to scribble the club on an application.

You're also missing the point of clubs and extracurriculars to college admissions.

It's not to weed out the intraverts. In fact, many of the kids who ARE involved in clubs are intraverts. It's to find kids who are involved in constructive, social, community settings. Constructive being the key word. Constructive, or beneficial, or accepted as worthwhile to the general community.

At least by their terms. I'm not here to say their terms are correct, just saying that they have a set standard they want to find and club involvement tends to be conducive to meeting that standard, which is not necessarily a social person.

Was it difficult for everyone to get into college?

Americans ones = yes. I'm an international student who needs aid in a recession. I saw this one coming.

Canadian = lol no.

Edit: Does anyone here live in Montreal and would like to give me some answers on the costs of living there? McGill residence is expensive, and i'm probably gonna live off campus. I looked at the rent right now, and a studio is around 400-500 and so is a 1 bedroom apartment. So I'm probably gonna do that. Any idea on food costs and stuff and costs of transit? My thanks.

Accepted to Waterloo University Chemistry Co op Program with a President's Scholarship.

Goddamn it. I thought I applied for Honours Sciences... Oh well. McGill and UT are still there...

I'm a freshman in college. I graduated high school with a 3.92. Last semester looked pretty good for me.

Comp Sci I: A
Calculus I: A
Intro to Speech: A
Programming Tools: A
Scientific Programming: A

Yeah, straight A's. Go Figure >_> Hopefully, I can keep it up this semester. I'm doing fine in comp sci II, but calculus II is kicking my ass.

Well finally at my least year studying in college. I am not from the US so the way college is here in Brazil is kind of different but My average grade till now is something about 8.5. Not bad for a Computer Engineer class I believe. In the end of the year they release kind of a rank with the best averages lets see my place there :)

Surprised that I got in to Carnegie Mellon

Now I'm just waiting on Cornell, though I'm pretty certain Georgia Tech will be my top choice regardless

why would you go to georgia tech over carnegie mellon? gtech is really cutthroat for undergrad, not nearly as selective, and atlanta is hot

Thanks man. I really do hope you get into some good universities. Are you waiting for any for the April 1st deadline?

Yeah, Harvard. LOL. That's all I can say.

I'm waiting for JHU right now. Not expecting much, but still a glimmer of hope.

Although I was accepted to two prestigious universities in Canada anyways, so I guess I can be pretty happy with that.

Got into Johns Hopkins, though I'm probably not going to go because I've only heard bad things about the environment

Congratulations. Rejected for me. Probably because I'm international and need 45K + to go. Or could be my mediocre achievements. One of the two.

Grats! I went down there last summer but chose not to apply because I got a really cutthroat and "study first" vibe from the school. But hey some people like that!

Also I got accepted to Tufts which is like my fourth choice but considering my top three choices (Harvard, Brown, Princeton) are Ivies I'm pretty souped!

For some reason my school doesn't go with the whole "A,B,C " scores. Instead we go by numbers. Here are my scores:

English:90
Science:87
Math:90
Social Studies:88
Gym:80
Orchestra:99
Art:87

Did you get accepted ED/SCEA for Yale or Brown? Or are you waiting for tomorrow?

I decided to reject Princeton, Yale, and Brown. I know this sounds funny--but I got a really good impression from the University of Iowa when I visited. It's one of those gut instincts. I don't think I'd be happy at a really competitive, cutthroat place.

I hope you met your Ph.D advisor/supervisor, and that he's pretty well known.
