Finding Suspects Within the Current D/P Metagame (Discussion Thread)

because it's a waste of time and gets in the way of (more) important tests (you know, the ones that might actually add something to the metagame). If you want a SR-less metagame then there's nothing stopping you from just creating a new server or something.

So now it's in your hands to decide what wastes the community's time, and what doesn't? The fact that this topic exists shows the community's interest, imo.

reasonable justification should be needed to test anything for a ban, it's as simple as that. I don't know if that's what the rest of smogon/policy review thinks but that doesn't change my opinion that there is literally no reason for this test to happen besides "for fun" which is certainly not what Smogon is necessarily here for.

At the very least it should wait its turn until absolutely everything else in the Order of Operations has been explored, because those are additions to the metagame and therefore don't need justification.

As for "community interest," Skarm made a point about that some time ago, around the time of the Deoxys/Wobb bold votes iirc. I think it's relevant: http://www.smogon.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1329621&postcount=34

I agree, Syberia.

Smogon is supposedly the ultimate authority when it comes to competitive pokémon. It would be useless if we ignored the community's wants and needs.

Can I ask that we get this thread back on track, please?

Edit: A game that's not for fun? What? ._. Everything needs justification or this site loses credibility. I think you're taking Skarm's post the wrong way.

there are probably like 234300 different metagame variations that would probably be more fun than the one we have right now, to the majority of the playerbase. The problem is, the only way we'd end up with any of them would be to make a bunch of random tests based purely on the fact that "this'll probably be more fun, who knows."

We need to justify bans, that's it. We don't know exactly what's going to happen when Mew hits standard, but testing it out of the blue sky makes sense because it's an addition to the metagame that we have yet to experience enough to make a proper judgment on.

How so?

Yeah, nowadays it's not even a question as to whether or not Stealth Rock is going to be used in a competitive match. It's now a question of who gets Stealth Rock, when do you set them up, and how do you make a team that doesn't get raped by it.

I personally find competitive parts of gaming to be most fun for me. I'm the current National 21 and under US Checkers Champion and I'm starting to get into competitive Brawl... A raw display of skill should in my opinion be rewarded. By beating your opponents you show that you've bested and outsmarted them on the field of battle. With Stealth Rock it eliminates some of the skill involved to win. Anyone can switch their Stealth Rock pokémon on a pokémon that cannot kill it and they know it won't Taunt them, so they can setup freely.

Setting up other moves, combos, and strategy takes time, practice, and patience to get right. Not just a one turn setup, oh well your Moltres is half dead.

Toxic Spikes and Spikes take time and strategy to set up. No other move is like this...

All I am asking is for a consensus that it needs to be tested and then after we have tested it we can follow the same procedure that we used to say bye to Garchomp.

Skarm's post encouraged the voting thing, which is what we've been promoting this whole thread.

I don't know how much more clearer I can be.

This thread is perpetually getting off topic, and nothing will come out of this anyways. Orderly discussion on suspects will be set up when required.
