Fired, for my facebook profile

but if that was the case, why not continue my contract for the next two weeks and just not renew it when the time came? then they wouldn't have had this mess and fuss..

Schadenfreude isn't very Christlike, Lexite!

Anyway, you should definitely contact a union rep and see about pursuing some form of legal action. That you should be fired under these circumstances is frankly appalling.

When getting fired there must a 3rd party present so this shit gets documented. This seems incredibly fishy to me they fired you like that. Court seems the only logical way to go from here.

I don't have much to bring to the discussion here other than my sympathies. I too have experienced the anguish of forced redundancy during the holiday season and it certainly wasn't a nice time. I found it hard enough without the added hassle of moving so yeah, really sorry to hear this! :X

It kinda reminds me of an episode of the Peep Show where Mark accuses one of his colleagues of being a racist and he is promptly fired so I guess this sort of thing isn't completely unheard of but surely they're crossing a line in this instance? I mean, your Facebook is YOUR Facebook and you're not obliged to represent the company or anything else for that matter on it (I'm not saying you were being even remotely racist on your Facebook btw). Is it really that different to them coming to Smogon or any other site you frequent and dissaproving of the way you conduct yourselves on there? It seems dangerously close to a breach of your freedom!

Best of luck getting through this.

PS. Lexite, stop being such an insensitive douche.

Damn, Akuchi, that sucks.

Myspace/Facebook is being used more and more to SCREEN OUT potential employees (so yes, definitely watch what you put on your public profiles), however, once you're offered a position or a contract, the laws can/will get sticky. Unfortunately, in most cases, contract workers (or sub-contractors) tend to have less "rights" then employees, which seems to be the case in this situation. Overall, it still sounds fishy. Is there something similar to the DOL over there? DOL is an (American) employees trusted companion in cases where unjust/unfair policies discriminated against an employee; as far as DOL suits go, the burden falls on the employer for both documentation and justification regarding a termination/pay rate/exempt status.

So yeah, definitely something you should look into. Good luck with it! Remember to breath. It always helps to release some stress. :P

To be off topic, I remember from my psychology course, that feminism simply means to want equal rights for women/men.

To be on topic... I think if you take this to court, the chances of you winning is extremely high. Unless you're hiding some details from us, from what I read, the fired you without legitimate reason (especially since your facebook is only open to friends).

I've only studied basic law, but I think a professional lawyer would easily win this for you.

Lexite, if akuchi is feminists or not that is not a reason to fire her, not even if she hates men (that i don't think she does). Unless she were mean or aggressive towards men coworkers, which i doubt! (did you get along with the other people akuchi?, someone could be backstabbing you). Also, this is not a "feminism" debate, knock it off!

There is something fishy here, i don't share her viewpoints but i wouldn't get her fired for it, i don't think she is disgusting with it either!, something wrong is going on.

I don't know your laws, but something could be done, investigate and i hope you find a new job that you enjoy :/

Ok, I deleted all the nonsense, but please stick to the topic. Feminism has nothing to do with being fired for alleged racism.

Ok, to clarify. She was fired for Racism, not feminism.

Lexite is planning a topic on feminism. I recommend she makes it and we can all discuss feminism there.

Have a nice day.

While I don't agree with you getting fired since what you do outside of work should be your own business IMO, I'm still going to say this could all have been avoided if you didn't have some of those things on your facebook profile. The internet is not some private little bubble anymore. Over the past year now I've seen plenty of headlines online about people getting fired over pictures or comments on their myspaces, websites, whatever. It's not like this is the first case of this happening ever. I know some of the dorm officials and RAs at my university were using Facebook well over 2 years ago to help catch underage drinkers living on campus because of their photos. I'm not saying it's your fault, but I am saying you put yourself in the position to get screwed over like this.

That obviously didn't matter because the title of this thread is "Fired, for my facebook profile". If that content isn't on her Facebook, odds are this doesn't happen.

Am I the only one that thought one could not be fired for their views and personal beliefs? That one could only be so should one bring those beliefs to the workplace in a disruptful manner?

Like i said on one of the deleted post, i find odd that they get you fired for some Internet profile, it's not even an official thing or document! You could write all kind of dumb stuff on your profile and that doesn't mean it is the truth, those profiles should not be used as evidence or "in a serious matter" at all.

In addition to this how would they know that it's really her facebook profile anyway? Anyone can take someone's pictures and make a facebook, myspace, whatever. That's bullshit that you were fired for something entirely not work related.

yeah, I guess a part of this thread is a warning - i didn't think this could or would happen to me. I've heard of it happening before, in much more extreme circumstances where, for example, a group of police officers joined the group 'look, I've had a pocol' (short for police collision) and made jokes about driving into old age pensioners.
I know my profile is quite.. out there as regards to humour in places, and it explictly states my political position but these things aren't things I am ashamed of.
I guess.. watch out. Even if you think you're safe, and your profile's friends only, you're not.

And yes, I got along with everyone there, which is one reason this is so hurtful. There were three people there that annoyed me slightly - two women who'd sit on my desk and generally act like my supervisors even though they were the same level as me, and one boy wasn't terribly impressed with me because I decided I didn't want to sleep with him, but I can't see either of those things being major enough to make a complaint about me, especially one as devious and simply untrue as this.
For everyone who thinks my feminism means I hate men - I don't. I get on well with men. I've got a wonderful boyfriend, my best friend is male, far more male friends than female, and I've got two fucking wonderful little brothers who I'd do anything for. I don't think I should even have to justify myself like this, to be fair. What I do hate is the inequality of the current system, but that's another argument for another day, and should I bother to get involved in Lexite's topic about feminism I'm sure I'll expand on those views there.

This is a really good point. If you have any enemies, google yourself and see if you can find a fake Facebook or something - your manager might have seen something completely different to your actual profile

That suck about getting fired over Facebook content. I basically use mine to include friends I knew from school or my relatives or those that I could use as potential references that could help me, as I avoid including something that could come back to haunt me.

Too late, but I'd agree with cookie, allowing only friends to see your profile is best. Not only for things like this, but also to protect some shred of privacy about your life from strangers.

Slick McFavorite here, reporting for duty.

Step 1 to getting ahead in life: HIDE YOURSELF. It's the only way to keep your work life seperate from your personal life.

I don't profess to have a deep understanding of UK labor laws, but I'm willing to bet that, as much as I hate to say it, there is absolutely NOTHING you can do about this. Being a temp worker basically guarantees that they can let you go for any reason at any time. Temps don't get the benefit of union backing.

As for whether this is fair or not: fuck no, of course it isn't. But it's reality, and it's been happening for years. I used to have an awesome website at www.egonspengler.com, where the home page was a picture of me flipping the bird and had a whole page called "Things I Hate," where I ranted and raved and bitched and swore. I took it all down after college because, well, you can't DO that out in the real world. My former college (as well as MANY others) follow Facebook and MySpace religiously and use it to bust up parties and get students in trouble BEFORE THEY EVEN COMMIT ANY INFRACTIONS.

Long story short, do as I do... go underground. Just make sure you keep me in the loop.

I don't have much to say here besides that everyone who is saying that this is illegal or should be taken to court are wrong. I'm not certain where akuchi lives (I'm assuming right now either the US or England) but employers can fire you for outside of work actions or behavior if they feel you poorly represent the company or damage the companies name. The only time when this isn't true is when you work for a government agency. You have the right to do or say most anything in civilized countries, but you are not protected from private employers.

Edit: Cool DM posts basically the same thing but worded better as I'm typing =(

Lawsuit!

I'm thinking your boss may have a point of scouting on workers, but not for this. Your boss is an idiot, and you might have a case in your favor.

This is ridiculous!

I guess now you've learned not to have retarded things in your "interests" section. Good luck with your future.

pretty much. you shouldn't advertise your 'weird' views on your facebook profile because odds are you'll get in trouble for it. i'm working and my fb profile has nothing 'weird' on it.

then again i'm not a feminist or racist or whatever and even if i were i wouldn't advertise it to the world because that is just dumb. people will find out and you will get in trouble for it; you can't blame your workplace for being intolerant of racism or whatever because that isn't wrong, you're the one who's wrong for being a racist right.

edit: also i don't add friends from work. they are not friends, they are coworkers.
