General Fighting Game Discussion

GGXXAC+ just released on PSN! It's my first time playing Guilty Gear and it's super fun so far. I still can't really pick a character but it's nice just messing around with everyone~

So uh, today was like the one time I was rooting for Daigo in SF4. I wanted him to just destroy Infiltration as a revenge for EVO and it was looking like that after Winner's Finals (double overhead oh god soooo good).

But then Grand Finals was just crazy. Infiltration is just a goddamn monster.

Also, I actually watched SFxT today and it was not really that bad of a watch. It's not like bursting out hype or time outs still happen, but they aren't really that grating. A lot of the strategy is actually pretty fun to watch. Shame 2013 is throwing a lot of the unique strategy of the game out of the window, it's actually seems to be shaping up nicely.

Oh yeah, ST was great too, but it's ST which is always great. Damdai <3

DAMMIT.

I wanted Daigo to take this so badly, and after winners finals I was sure he could do it. I think he could have done it in GFs if he had just gone nuts again instead of playing more safe-you could tell Infiltration just couldn't deal with the sheer balls of Daigo in winners.

I went to sleep before SFxT, too heartbroken to watch Infiltration win again. It'll be uploaded to YouTube right?

twitch has the video archive, but tbh infiltration just dominated both Grand Finals really. I had hoped Dieminion wouldve gotten further then he did but oh well :P

Ah excellent. Who died Dieminion go down to? And I think Daigo would have done better if he had just gone nuts again. You could tell Infiltration knew exactly what to do against regular Daigo, but was totally confused when Daigo went into uber-balls mode.

Dieminion was completely slaughtered by Daigo, and then lost to Snakeeyes. I was sad that he didn't go farther, but those were probably the two players I was most happy with him losing to, so oh well.

I'm happy for Infiltration, maybe now he'll get the respect he deserves. I still wanted to see Daigo win, but the way Infiltration handled things was so amazing that I really can't complain. I noticed Daigo played more reserved in Grand Finals, but it felt like an intentional decision on his part. Maybe he thought the crazy Winner's Finals would train Infiltration into playing "too respectfully," and intended to take advantage of that by switching to a more solid style?

I thought SFxT was ultra boring to be honest. The top 3 was mildly interesting, but only because of the huge huge stakes. The game itself is a boring footsie contest with a couple novelties emerging from the switch mechanic. I say "boring footsie contest" not because footsies are boring, but because throws in this game are super super terrible, and the life lead is extremely important, and stages are super huge. So there seems to be a lot less dynamism there compared to something like SF4, and a lot more runaway.

I don't know what the 2013 changes are, but if they're SF4-ish then I'm probably happy with that. Not that I really care about the future of the game regardless, but if Capcom is going to continue pushing it as hard as they are, then it might as well be passable.

People actually have to donate for it though. A game with a relatively non-existent player base (yay for unreleased fangames!) that's part of a cult following that everyone not in it basically hates. Not seeing MLP winning anything. Especially not with almost every other game on the list having a bigger and more devoted player base lol. Hell, even the people that made FiM are saying not to vote for it.

Melee for EVO tho

it's worth noting that pony fans are fucking crazy when it comes to this charity thing.

the FiM devs have come out basically saying they don't want anyone voting for them just because it has ponies (which people are bound to do), but because it's actually a game worth voting for... which, if anyone's been paying any attention to it, it is. if you don't know anything about the game or enjoy indie games, I highly recommend reading this recent gamespot article on the subject.

there has already been a leaked alpha of the version that appeared during last year's EVO indie corner, where it received a pretty great reception (including from one of the EVO organizers, which I guess is why the game is up for vote now???) so there's already a decent fanbase for it.

take a look at any of the recent videos on youtube, and you will see a game that a lot of time and effort went into. I'm not sure it's the best game on the list to vote for (I'd personally want Melee), but if it gets chosen it definitely deserves it.

I have yet to see or hear anything remarkable about FiM. It looks like a much more boring Melty Blood to me right now. It might actually be great or whatever, but right now I feel like it would be super disappointing to have FiM in there over Skullgirls or Divekick. That being said, I still celebrate the idea of a serious fanmade project being given some limelight in the community, so I won't be too upset if it does happen.

The Melee community is fine on its own so I'm not too worried about that getting in. If anything, I'd rather see Apex build up its own brand. That said, I would be 100% excited to see it at Evo regardless.

It's just frustrating to me because MLP looks like a mediocre at best game with an over zealous fan base which is basically "why would I want to watch this when Melty Blood is an option or any of the other games?" Maybe by some miracle Skullgirls or Divekick will make it in instead and it'll be like the best EVO lineup I could have hoped for, heh.

Persona made it in which is a nice and welcome surprise.

Just an update: Because Fighting is Magic isn't finished yet, they decided to remove it from the running for the 8th game and instead (if it wins) they'll hold a large-ish tournament in the indie games corner. I think this is definitely the best thing they could have done, that way nobody has to feel like this was being forced down their throats.

Over-zealous is an understatement haha... 3.5k in donations already, quadruple any game other than Melee.

Melee and Skullgirls being in the "lead" is definitely a win-win for me, haha.

Though honestly if Brawl at Evo was as hype as it was at Apex I would be okay with it, heh.

Skullgirls just jumped way ahead in the polls...ugh, no offense to Skullgirls but I just don't like watching it, and we already have another anime fighter in...there's really nothing like Melee out there, I hope it gets in.

Melee guys are holding an event tomorrow where upwards of $4300 will get donated.

Melee's gunna be 8th at EVO if that goes well.

Oh the irony in Breast Cancer research donations being raised for Soul Calibur V, the game I boycotted for its sexism. I suppose there is a reason it is losing hard.

Haha, I'd think the major reason is prolly because the community for that game more or less dead, but I guess what you said is most likely a factor in why it's so dead.

I really should be happy that Melee will prolly make it in, but the more I play Skullgirls recently the more and more I fall in love with the game and I'm just sad it might not make it.

Speaking of which, if anyone wants to play me in it (PS3) lemme know!

Bumping because of this. Looks like Melee crowd is pretty dedicated to the cause. Also I've heard rumblings from the GG community about some donations they wanna get going soon, so there's that. Divekick is doing some Kickstarter-esque donation incentives for their attempt to hit the main stage.

All in all, I'm glad this is competitive, will prolly not end up with MLP in first, and whichever of these four games I'd be down for.

before attending apex i slightly got into the games so i could follow things at the event better. after attending, marvel and ae have peaked my interest, and i gained a lot of respect and appreciation for the competitive smash scene
