Lol yeah, when i first starting to get into Pokemon a bit more I went onto serebii a few times too, and I clicked into the "Pokemon of the week" icon, thinking "oh I know this! I wonder if I get a prize" but when I clicked in I saw the Pokemon, then I scrolled down to see what attacks they had, and I wondered why they have him with attacks like "Iron Defence" and "Double Team" because in-game these attacks are pretty useless and I have never battled before.

Anyway, just wanted to say that we both thought the same way when we saw the attacks etc off. hmm....now that i think about it, theres absoloutly no point in this post, excellent.
 
How i 1st started TRYING to play competitivly
like alot i heard about serebii and went there to look at the POTW, even tho i was convinced my sets were the best( even tho at the time, a few years ago, i didnt even know why the stats mattered XD) So when i saw the POTW it made no sense to me and at 1st still thought mine were the best, but after looking at what the moves like sword dance and dragon dance do , i could see how they would be very helpful, so i thought i give em a try and ... they worked!

lol same with you guys above, i heard of serebii and ran into there forums, registered there and of course being a nub at the time got killed in a battle.
So of course i went on this other site gametalk.com and copied the guys name who beat me cuz i wanted to see if any1 would recognize the name, fortunatly for me someone did and they said "are you a smogonite" of course i said "wtf is that" and then he linked me here.


even tho i rarely post here i come to smogon ALOT and glad i found it ^_^
 
How I first started playing pokemon:

Way, way way back i bought my first gameboy colour and a copy of pokemon from my local woolworths, i had no idea what pokemon was it just seemed cool. I picked up the blue version which was my favourite colour, i was such a simple child.
Shortly after picking my first pokemon and capturing my first pidgey i was well on my way to becoming a........Pokémon master...

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

Simple.My friend Havak got me into netbattle and I became a casual online battler. I fell out of pratice about two years ago as me and him grew alittle distant because we went to different colleges. However, over the past couple of months we have started hanging out again (YAY!) and he persuaded me to get back into Pokémon and register on the forums.

So here i am!
 
When I started playing pokemon
I started playing at R/B/Y all those years ago and seeing as i was around 7-8 years old, i guess it kinda had time to grow on me, so i kept buying the games and here i am. I started playing after my firends at school brought their game boy colours in, after which I started collecting the cards for a few years, before actually moveing onto better card games.

Competative battling/Smogon
I havent been here for long, about 3 days, and while i was on another forum for another game, A very good friend of mine metioned a site where i could play pokemon competatively (i had no idea what netbattle or any of those online pokemon games) and i guess im here, i wanna do good etc. ^)^
 
How I first started playing pokemon:
My friend let me play his Blue at the pool one summer and i was hooked on Blastoise

How i first found Smogon:
Someone on the serebii wifi chat room wanted a ChainChomp and i asked him wtf that was and he told me to come to Smogon
 
How I first started playing Pokemon:
My grandmother had gone to Taiwan and brought back a 31 in 1 game that had Pokemon Yellow, Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Green, Pokemon Red, Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Silver and a game where Pikachu had to save the Smurfs (What the heck?). But since I didn't understand it, I waited for Crystal.

How I found Smogon:
I was on NSider 2 asking if my movesets needed work, and someone directed my attention here.
 
How I first started playing pokemon:
When i was like 7 or 8 i used to play my babysitters niece's pokemon blue on their gameboy. And i begged and begged my parents to get me a Gameboy. They told me that if I found all my lost clothes at school they would buy me one. Low and Behold the next day I come home with an arm full of clothes and that night i got Pokemon Red. Started With charizard and its been fire pokemon ever since.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:
I started battling as soon as i got the game and had a decent team but man i wasn't very good. Got better on marriland but Kooom told me to come here to improve my skills and learn to breed my own pokes. So here i am.
 
How I first started playing Pokemon:
When I was 12, I visited my grandmother, and my younger cousin was there. He told me that he was having trouble catching a pokemon and wanted my help. I asked "What's a pokemon?" LOL, he explained the game to me and how it works in a couple minutes, and a few minutes later, I caught Mewtwo on Pokemon Blue (he had no master ball). He got immediately jealous, and since then, I've been a fan!

How I found out about Smogon:
I was already being a competitive breeder on Pearl, but I followed my best friend's referral and went to Serebii.net for several months. Then, on the post "competitive move list," people continuously said to just look at Smogon for move lists. I did so for awhile, and this week, thanks to the encouragement of my best pokemon buddy, I decided to join here.
 
I've been meaning to post in this thread for quite a long while now; but of course, your average teenager rarely recalls a thought/intention as old as 30 seconds or less anyways. Now. let's get down to the nitty gritty (hehe):

Pokemon - The Genesis:

Matthew Brooks - The very first and last nerd i ever jacked for GB a cart; the gb cart in this case, turned out to be Pokemon Yellow - a rather bright and square object. Brought it home, sneaked my brother's Gameboy out, inserted the loot, powered on, and GANNA KICK THERE ASS!!

...wait, i meant, i began pokemoning; heh, silly me.

Amazingly, I went ~2hrs on my first go, mocking and making silly jokes about the corny "goody-2-shoes" lingo the different characters made use of. Indeed, I was amused. Not to mention, my "mother" constantly reminded me of the tender love and care I should demonstrate to my friends, my, ????????????? pokemon. My heart softened, and i gradually accepted the rugged little fucks into my life. Hell, they became the children I never had, my blood and my vein......my, my dawgs.


(Smogon, what is?? ?):

Oddly, i think i spotted the word "smogon" in one of my college searches and decided to check it out o.0, where, coincidentally, I was redirected to the wepage www.smogon.com - the place where it happens. Shit happens.

And yeah, eventually, i browsed, i clicked, i lurked, i signed....up and bam wham, thank you maam! here i am.

Smogon, yeayeah!!!!!
 
How I first got into pokemon:

When i was a wee little lad at the age of 5 and when my big bro was sleeping, I went into my brothers room. Inquisitive as I was back then I looked around and found a Game Boy original with the lovely Blastoise engulfed cartridge in the slot where the games went. I played for about 5 minutes when my 12 year old brother woke up and scolded me for repeatedly throwing pokeballs at Laurilane's (Ice/Water elite four person) Cloyster(about 150 times). He taught me how to attack and 2 years later I bought Gold version:toast:

How I found Smogon:

I first started out on serebii and when there the first thing i did was post a team. I then found out quickly that i had a lot to learn when the admirable Omastar(a. k. a. aipomkong on serebii) corrected about 1/3 of what was my team. I began to make an idiot of myself, using exclamation points and all that, and found that i was making no progress in my pokemon learnings. The majority of people their thought i was a tard there as well. One of these people pointed this out and sent me a link to smogon to learn stuff. I read the articles and eventually joined hoping i could get a fresh start in the e-community. But of course, I made myself a bit of a tard here when Surgo gave me an infraction due to stupidity. Then I left for about six months and came back.
 
How I got into Pokemon:

I actually started out with the cards and the show in like 3rd grade so I guess I was like 9. Then, I found out that almost all my classmates and friends had all the pokemon games and I didn't. So, first game I got was silver version, then I got the rest, then sapphire came along, and the rest is history.

How I found Smogon:

I found smogon because I read about it on a forum. Now, I practically use it on a regular basis.

How I first started playing pokemon:

I was in 7th grade I believe? I had heard of and seen Pokemon before a year before when I was on the bus going to an art camp when the guy in front of me was playing it. At first I thought it was kind of dumb, but once I actually bought the game (and the cards), I was completely hooked. The battling wasn't exactly up my alley. I wasn't very strategic back then, but the Pokemon themselves were just too cute, and I don't use that adjective lightly. Dewgong was my first Pokemon love. After the Gold and Silver generations, however, I kind of lost touch because everyone else around me was because of it being a "kid's game" (which it really isn't. I could explain my theory on Pokemon later), and now I'm finding myself with this entirely new group of Pokemon with natures and skills and all these things I really don't understand. Which is one reason why I'm here. lol. I'm getting the hang of it, but obviously not fast enough.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

I found Smogon because I needed information. I was completely confused when I saw that the Pokemon I loved now have natures and skills tied to them. I tried battling online and failed miserably. lol. I guess I just started back because I wanted to bring myself back into the loop. I should have never been so effected by peer pressure back then. Now that I am majoring in game art & design, it would also be good for me to know more about what Pokemon can do (along with and compared to the many unrelated games out there). Afterall, I am looking to land a job at GameStop very soon, and what good would I be if I knew very little about one of the most popular games there?

Put simply - I bought Pokemon Diamond, I am hooked again, I am confused, and I am once again a member of N00bville. *sigh*

How I first started playing Pokemon:

As a kid, I was never allowed to have a gameboy because I'd "be too distracted." So while hospitalized from an accident, I was in the kid's ward, and picked up a gameboy there, to finally play Pokemon Gold for the first time. I was hooked, and when I got home I went out to buy a SP and copy of Emerald. Prooved to my parents that a gameboy doesn't ruin lives.

How I found out about Smogon:

I began getting more in-depth about Pokemon (iv breeding, etc), and after meeting people at JAA, I heard about a certain someone by the name of (no name dropping here) "Gay Denim Jacket." I heard that he was a part of Smogon, and began lurking and reading Pokemon message boards. I finally decided to join, out of my own sheer curiousity.

I think my first Pokémon experience was seeing the end of the first episode and being amazed by that yellow rat. Totally forgot about it afterwards and got re-introduced by my cousin, who had the Red ROM. Got the ROM, played it, fucked something up, never worked again. Didn't play the games 'till I borrowed Gold from a friend. The game couldn't save, so he let me keep it. I dropped it on the floor one day and after that, it worked perfectly. I played the game for hours and hours and tried to make good teams and movesets, but failed. I didn't have anyone to battle, so when I found Netbattle, it was almost a dream come true. Seriously, I had been looking for something like that for a long time. And boy did I have much to learn.

I was lurking on the Netbattle Forums a lot in GSC, but never said anything and I probably didn't even sign up. Played a lot OU, got bored, played UU, got bored and left. I got back with RS and was there when Smogon was anounced and from that moment on, Netbattle was gone and Smogon was everything. Lurked for a while, got active on a Forum for a first time, left, came back for DP, left and here I am again.

1996 Iirc was the year I bought my first ever pokemon game it was a blue version. I instantly fell in love with the game.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

Well I started coming here a long time ago about Jun of last year but only today created an account. I originally learned of Smogon through Netbattle.
 
How I first started playing Pokémon:
I was around 7 years old or less. My parents traveled and when they came back, they brought a Mario Kart 64 cartridge and Pokémon Stadium cartridge (well I always watched the TV show since Sept. 1999, when it came to Brazil). I played Pokémon Stadium a lot, I've even beaten the Prime Cup Masterball before I even had a Pokémon Gameboy Game. Then I bought Pokémon Stadium 2 (It was awfully expensive back in those days, 250,00R$, which are now around 130 dollars).
When I was 11 years old (or 10, can't remember), I finally bought a Game Boy Color and a Pokémon Silver, mainly to beat Pokémon Stadium 2. I cried when my Transfer Pak didn't work, I waited for so long. Anyway, around a year later I found Netbattle and downloaded it. My team was something like Typhlosion, Lugia, Ho-oh, Alakazam, Ampharos and Dragonite (My Silver team, but I had Kadabra instead of Alakazam since no friends of mine played Pokémon). This was December 2005. Another year later I bought my Red version (lol). Too bad it can't save anymore. :/ A good thing was that I could play my Silver on Pokémon Stadium 2. (TAKE THIS AEROBLAST, ELITE FOUR!!!111)
I started visiting a lot of Pokémon sites (Mainly Serebii), started getting more skilled at Pokémon and, finally, on early 2007, I got my GBA SP and a Sapphire cartridge, which I still play nowadays. And yes, a DS is way too expensive.

How I found Smogon:
I downloaded Netbattle (^see giant history^), went to some Pokémon Sites (including Smogon itself) and then TODAY I registered at Smogon Forums because I had nothing else to do.

Wait, this isn't how I started playing Pokémon or how I found Smogon, this is my entire Pokémon Life. D;

It all started with my sister buying a pokemon yellow version while I bought a PS one. Anyways one thing led to another and I started seeing her enjoy pokemon so I bugged my parents to buy me one as well. Ever since then I've been playing pokemon.

How I started battling online/How I found out about Smogon:

All started on Netbattle I met a couple of dudes over there who told me that if you really wanna get better you should visit Smogon. Well they told me the truth Smogon is the premiere authority on all things competitive about pokemon.

i got sapphire when i was little and some kid stole it and the gameboy with it so i quit until like 5 years later i saw diamond on the stand and just bought it...

How I first started playing Pokemon:
I remember the Anime being out over here before the actual games were, and I was a big fan of the show when I was in a game shop and saw the ad for Pokemon Red + Blue. I immediately put down the game I was intending to buy (Panzer Dragoon for Sega Saturn =P) and vowed to save my money and purchase Pokemon when they were released (For some reason I may have thought they were not out at the time, although they may not have been and imports may have been in stock). Little did I know, My dad had bought me red version and gave it to me in the car on the journey home. I played for hours in my room, not stopping, even having meals brought up to me whilst playing. Ever since then, I've been such a fan of the series, I've never bought a game from this country, Always imported them since due to complete impatience =P


How I found out about Smogon:
After D/P Came out late 2006, I was eager to battle other people online. Of course, with little knowledge I was completely desiccated. I started learning how to improve from Serebii's competitive battling forum (then only primitive) and with time, started to get better. I feel that there is still more I need to learn and I found this place through other members of Serebii. I've finally decided to join after a long time of lurking =)

This one guy was making fun of me for using Serebii's movesets, and told me to go to Smogon.
 
i first started playing pokemon when i went to my friends house and he called me a noob for not having pokemon red the gb colour one and i tried his and i bought my own and have been obssesed ever since

i found smogon when i was annoyed looking for a decent site for wifi forums
