In-Game Music

oh god yes, I have a few tunes that I've been addicted to lately, by Falcom JDK sound team:

The Ys series/LoH series have AMAZING tunes. They're both Japanese games (some installments have stateside ports, though others don't).

A few of my favorites:

from Ys 7 (available in the US!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnrObjp6RXg - Desert of Despair
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYsSWDnjGP8 - Road to Solitary Death
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbAUHmHk0Sk - Innocent Primeval Breaker
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhqQkd6A0QY - Ernst (Remake of a tune from Ys6)

Also, I don't know if these count, but the sound team behind the games occasionally remakes a few of it's own works, almost always into epic-er tunes than the originals:

There's more where those came from, though I won't bother posting any more.

And obligatory Golden Sun (GBA) mention, some of those tunes were kickass for it's time (Timpanis in the menu theme, of a game made in 2003?!?)

just droppin' in to say that

1) chrono cross be gottin' some sweet tunes
2) phoenix wright does some pretty snazzy stuff with techno
3) silver has the best soundtrack of all pokemon games
4) oh my god why do so much game music just sound like chrono trigger

koji kondo is probably one of my favourite composers of all time, he did the LoZ: WW themes as well as twilight princess and yoshi's island, some of my favourite musical soundtracks of all time

i also am a huge fan of the megaman II soundtrack, air man's stage is 'bomb diggity'

oh. spooky memories
super metroid was an astounding game in that respect (and many others, of course), perhaps the most engrossing atmosphere of any game environment i've experienced. it's not just the music, there's the setting itself and especially the lack of dialogue and direction. lost in the bowels of an alien planet, millions of miles from the nearest human life, guided only by your wits - it creates a powerful and thrilling sense of isolation. a great game for playing alone at night in one long go

the feeling the game gives you is so completely untranslatable. no other medium could ever hope to capture just what guiding samus through that terrifying planet really feels like. people who are dubious of video games as an art form need to play more super metroid.

also furthering the love for terranigma music. the starting town's theme is incredible but i can't find it on youtube because i don't know its name afffffff.

chrono cross has been mentioned, and with good reason. the most powerful feeling of awe i've ever experienced while playing a video game came in chrono cross when you end up in the temporal vortex (i think thats what its called? where you meet sprigg) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3scL27yf6K8 starts playing and you're smack dab in the middle of an indescribably gorgeous expressionistic masterpiece.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5Pz6KXWbTw holy FUCK why does nobody have a video of this place on youtube without some horrendous 'lets play' commentation or some equally horrendous voice acting? completely ruins the feel but it shows the ataraxia that is the temporal vortex

You know, not to mention Kondo's original success with the original Super Mario Bros. along with the SMB2, SMB 3, Lost Levels, Zelda 1 and Zelda 3, and Punch-Out!

He's a mind, he is.

I'm a huge VGM nerd, and this stuff actually inspired me to start to learn music seriously. Here's some of my favorite games (both for their gameplay and music).

Chrono Trigger has been praised most of all (arguably) for its soundtrack, and for good reason. Even though I played it about 15 years after its original release and and from the newer generation of gamers, I was still awed by the brilliance of both the game and the music. Some of my favorite tracks in order of appearance in the game include (I'll try to keep this to no more than 1/4 of the OST [roughly 17 songs])

Main Theme/Chrono's Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIO1sajyx_o
Wind Theme (600 A.D. World Map): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-uMkAWj28o
Battle Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeNkqEOQ15I
Guardia Castle (Pride and Glory): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TykpyrHAZpw
Manoria Cathedral: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIbL6WanMi0
Frog's Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAgDXVECljc
The Trial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXszNFAcs04
Dome 16: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO-HhWIK4wA
Battle Theme 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddNgY_Rvsg0&feature=related
Boss Battle 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGZNL0lbtjE
Magus Battle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbbLN_GRSNI
Singing Mountain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpKvc95RZKU&feature=related
At the Bottom of the Night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQx9QaAxhk8
Time Curcits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg513kMhnNs&feature=related
Schala's Theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCSIH7vsmTY
Black Dream: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnjjNK7xXI0
World Revolution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojQAmkL2NXc
Too Far Away Times: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1qbVI9iTBU&feature=related

Other honorable mentions go to the Millennial Fair, Gato's Theme, Silent Light, Boss Battle 1, Lucca's Theme (Fanfare 1), Lavos's Theme, Bike Chase, Robo's Theme, Marle's theme, Ayala's theme, Ruined Factory, End of Time, Sewers, Confused Melody, Tyrano Lair, Ocean Palace, Sealed Door, Final Battle and pretty much the rest of the soundtrack.

Aside from Chrono Trigger, Pokemon/Zelda/Megaman/Final Fantasy/Okami/SSBB are all fantastic. I highly recommend http://www.youtube.com/user/PokeRemixStudio for his fantastic pokemon remixes, and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-Feuilv_mQ is the beginning of a great pokemon best songs countdown, and he did a good job with.

Original Zelda Theme is best.

I like all vg music, but some pokemon themes are basically what tie the game together (like D/P dialga/palkia theme)

Explains why i use mario paint... A lot 0.o

...Gilamesh Theme?

If you like FF music, I'd recommend checking out The Black Mages (Uematsu's prog metal group that covers FF music) and Hellion Sounds. The latter is especially awesome because they cover a bunch of battle tracks and they do a much better job pumping your blood than The Black Mages imo. I think the Hellion Sounds album is called The Sentence of Death.

Has this been posted before? Miror B was such a boss - he had a white-and-red afro, wore Choice Specs, used a team of 5 Ludicolo and a Sudowoodo, and had this fucking epic background music. I love it.

Yeah, I posted it in my insane tl;dr post. But Miror B's theme (Colosseum, first time) is absolutely amazing. Quite possibly my favorite music from any game I've ever played. Too bad his music changes in his future battles and in XD.

Does anyone else agree with me that boss battle music is ALWAYS good, regardless of the game? I mean, it's true, you can't deny it.

Ridley Battle Music proves this right.

Especially the Brawl version.
