(Little) Things that annoy you in Pokémon

My favorite is Selena/Calem being hyped up all game as THE rival when it comes to battling and once you finally get to scrap with them, with the one Mega Ring on the line to boot...

"I'm probably going to lose, but I owe my team to try."

...

I'm sorry, this is just pathetic. It not only made me lose any hype for that match, but it also made me feel bad for stomping them like they predicted.

Not to mention, practically every single time you battle, it's with a polite "would you like some time to heal first?" Come the hell ON. Why is this suddenly a thing? Whatever happened to being sucker-punched midway through a route or cave? It's like they actively want you to flatten them.

You basically give Selena/Calem depression

I think having a muted rival, one quitely confident and then increasingly but still quietly distressed, is an interesting direction, honestly? But fitting to the conversation, they didn't do enough with the concept.

But you see, I'd understand it if that happened AFTER I stomped them in the dirt.

As for that concept, they kinda played with it. Silver definitely gets a passing mark on the confidence, as he claims you won by luck, him having trash mons and everything but himself until Lance gives him that Champion Time and tells him that he was the problem.

Bede kinda fits too and bonus for actually breaking Hop. That was a really cool interaction that the player had nothing to do with. Shame we have to keep on beating Hop for like, 3 or 4 extra battles and hearing him mope about it.

There is a lot of ways I would describe Silver & Bede, "quietly confident" is not one of them
They are brashly confident, with a dash of sore loser. Their thing is being a very evidently self confident jerk, who does everything to make sure you know they think you're beneath them (andthoselossesdidntcountshutup)

What I'm talking about is someone who is just, like. You know pretty confident in their skills, but not bragging about it and is a pretty quiet person themselves. Which you do kind of get with Calem/Serena; they had good trainers for parents and like to show you the ropes and show what they know, but they're not bragging about it and they're not being extremely excitable (for lack of a better word). But as you defeat them they just get more and more distressed over this, but in a still-quiet manner. Someone who starts going into battle just blithely knowing they're going to lose. But it's not really set up and followed through properly; as you say it kind of goes real fast and as this whole conversation shows they dont have enough screen time or focus in general to make it land if that was the intent.

Cheren probably comes the closest to what I'm trying to get across (sorry for not being able to describe this well), except he basically has a mental breakdown into an obsession with power. Like there's nothing inward about increasingly going "what? what? we have the same badges?? how do i not have the power??? what?? how??? what????" with each battle, a character arc that effectively does not resolve until the sequel. My dude is in a loud rut

Some of you may disagree, but I feel really disappointed by the lack of a lot of stuff from Pokemon Emerald being added to ORAS.
Fine, we have complained enough about the lack of the Battle Frontier aka. Best Post-Game feature of Gen 3, but what about the Event Islands. Ok, Birth Island I can get behind because Deoxys is coming down from Space and to prevent damage the battle is moved to Space.

But what about Navel Rock and Faraway Island? I would love loved to haunt Mew in the grass.
And looking for Ho-oh and Lugia in Navel Rock is certainly better than going on a ship and look for a random Hoopa ring to make a blank background appear and battle them like almost every other legendary.
Also no rematches with Gym Leaders is a bumber.

At least you can get the other Lati in South Island I guess...

May/Brendan and Dawn/Lucas are a bit like this (though the latter never fights you, and I'm thinking purely of May/Brendan in Gen III not ORAS.)

The rival in RSE gets a lot of flack for being pathetic but I've replayed Emerald a couple of times recently and a lot of the characterisation is quite subtly good. They start out quite braggart-y, but this softens quite quickly. Brendan is actually a bit more brash than May is - at the end of the game, May's reaction to not being allowed inside the Hall of Fame is more genial than Brendan's, and he's generally more combative throughout the game than her. They both approach their defeats with a good nature (Scott mentions that the rival has "a face all red from anger" after you beat her, but they keep this hidden from you and act positive about it) and stay friendly while acknowledging they can't beat you in combat.

And besides, the rivals in RSE actually are researchers first, battlers second.

It's no big deal that they never really go over the top. Wally is out there to sucker punch you in Victory Road for that.

Oh, now I get it.

Yeah, that'd be cool. It really bothers me how they built up that battle to do that tho.

I hate how GF programs post gen 3 games

To put this in perspective, say you just want to add ones mon
So you need to edit the graphics.h script to include your sprite/pallete, then update the anim, front, back, pal, and shiny pal script tables
Then you need to edit 2 species scripts
Then 3 more for audio
THEN 2 more for pokedex entries
THEN separate scripts for TM, Tutor, and Level up move sets
THEN base stats
And then of course, edit wild spawn locations
Thats over 10 scripts

Vs GSC where there's only 2 scripts you really need to edit

This also unfortunately is probably why they didn't want to redo the engine afterwards
Why wouldn't you need to edit all this for GSC too?

Not familiar with romhacking so I don't know what all goes into it or how everything is structured, but every aspect of a Pokémon that you mentioned is also in Gen 2.

GSC uses less scripts for the same info

That was my guess, but I assumed that having more distinct fields would give you more precise control over Pokémon details without having them be tied up/connected to others.

It's easier to split up work that way too because people don't depend on everyone else to mess with the big block of data.

So how many of you guys know there is an interactive book in the Game Freak office in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon? It's an adventure book where you take the role of someone who wants to be a Videogame Creator, and end up on different situations that inspire you into taking a different position related to game creator (sound designer, storywriter, map designer, etc.)

It's lovely. It's heartwarming. It shows how, dubious capabilities notwithstanding, the guys at Game Freak really love what they do. It's great...

... and, as my hastily-taken photo shows, it's so Rayquaza-damned hidden that many don't know it even exists. Which is really sad as it's one of my favourite things about Gen VII.

I didn't know about that one (at least, I dont think I did) but I believe there's similar books at the melemele school. Gen 7 had a lot of nice little flavor text and such tucked away, USUM adding more was a nice thing.

Speaking of that school...I am so fascinated by the secret post-game battle there? It's in both games and you never have to go back there but, if you go to the top, yo uget to fight the principle and mysteriously he has a unique battle arena. It's the classroom you fight him in. I remember on replays looking at the battles that take place elsewhere in the school and no, it really is unique to him. Maybe less "annoyed" and more...confused? You could probably just have everyone in that school use the background...

Looks like there's also another postgame trainer school fight against a Black Belt. I have no idea what the context is to explain why a grown-ass man in a karate gi is hanging out in a school.

Ohoho I have an interesting one that just happened.

So I decided to play through X again since I wasn’t using my 3DS for another game, nostalgia, and because I’ve only done challenge runs of it (even the first time!) so I wanted to see if a normal playthrough could redeem it. I played as any regular player would, swept through Route 2 catching all the Pokémon since there aren’t many, and then entered Santalune Forest. I totally forgot that the elemental monkeys could be encountered there but my first encounter was a Panpour, and I thought it would be fun to swap my Froakie out for it. So I head back to Aquacorde Town and...

There’s. No. P. C.

There isn’t one in Vaniville Town, either. You’re stuck with the first 6 Pokémon you obtain until Santalune City, when Route 2 already sends you over a full party if you catch everything.

I thought these games were supposed to be beginner friendly. I’m close to resetting my game and hunting for a Panpour, but playing half an hour of the game twice because of a design omission? This is why these games are considered the worst in the series. Don’t put so many Pokémon before the first PC, it’s simple.

Edit: Actually I’m gonna expand this to saying the entire first 3 areas of the game annoy the hell outta me, and it’s not a good first impression.

Vaniville Town has your house, Calem/Serena’s house, and a random other family’s house. Only other features are the technology is amazing guy and your Mum’s Rhyhorn.

Route 1 is a straight line with no Pokémon.

Aquacorde Town ALSO only has three buildings. A Pokémon Centre without a PC, a shop that only sells potions, and a shop that only sells PokéBalls. No residents, no lore building, no reason to EVER return. It’s designed to be a pit stop at the start of your adventure that you spend 5 minutes in getting your starter and battling Shauna, and that’s all it is.

SwSh’s routes have more intricacy and detail than these areas.

Don't forget the mandatory KANTOOOOOOO Pidgey encounter.

XY def got some issues in that early segment.

Let's not act like Alola ain't worse tho. Tauros dude blocking the way until... bro, like 5 hours in the game before you can finally access a real Poké Center. Iirc you gotta do the whole Iki Town segment, including the festival and beating Hau, then deal with Kukui's antics, then when you need to go to school at like, midnight, you can go to a center.

WTF Game Freak.

As boring and poorly designed as the first leg of Alola is (I definitely have a post in here on that topic lmao), somehow all of that is less grating than my new complaint of 3 separate NPCs telling you where to catch Pikachu within 5 minutes of each other. I get it, it’s in Santalune Forest. Thanks to the Lass who battled me with one, Shauna, and the twins in the Santalune City Pokémon Centre for telling me. No, I will not be using one.

I’m considering making a Let’s Play thread chronicling my experience of playing through X completely normally. Turns out I have a lot of little things to say which is sad, because I’m playing this again to see the good side of this entry.

As for little positives... Shauna offering voluntary free healing in Santalune Forest is nice, considering how little money you start with. It doesn’t affect difficulty and is just convenient so you don’t have to keep running back to the Pokémon Centre. And the selection of Pokémon is cool, I’m currently hunting for a Dunsparce and a Burmy to replace my Scatterbug. I have also swapped out my Froakie for the Panpour anyway, though unnecessary grinding happened.

Also the KANTOOOOOO Pidgey doesn’t bother me that much. It’s dumb, but has literally no effect on the player experience. Should they have used that development time on adding a PC to Aquacorde Town though? Absolutely.

What the hell is the distinction of movies and cutscenes. Let me skip it all bro i already watched it. I dont care that lusamine is sad or whatever let me play the fucking bideo game.

Also saying KANTOOOO is very funny please continue to do that

i have to assume one is literally a separate movie file while the other is just an in-engine event. I do not think GameFreak understands what it is we want to skip when we say "cutscenes", honestly.....

Less of an annoyance and more of a hating, I have to live with the knowledge that there is an official Pokemon manga where Red has his uncensored genitals exposed in multiple instances, mostly for physical comedy involving said genitals.

And now I have infected you with this knowledge too. You're welcome.

"Pocket Monsters" aka the first offical manga based on Pokemon, the one with the weird-looking, talking Clefairy in it. A Gen III episode of the Anime even had Red, his clefairy, and his pikachu make cameo appearances

They make a cameo via a film which Ash says is his favorite, here's the clip:

Even in Gen 8, GF STILL doesn't know how to do interiors for houses
Unless I'm mistaken, that white door is a closet. No bedroom for the parents, no bathroom...while you have the living room, kitchen/dining, and the player's room

I ended up fixing the Player and May's house in Emerald for my hack cuz of that

Blue door's the bathroom, brown next to it the parent's bedroom. The end of the hall leads to a closet

But seriously, give the poor Mom her own room already GF!
