There seems to be error coming up when we whitelist a person twice so please don't add yourself if you have already. If you're not sure ask us.
 
asdfy i'd love to have your help to flesh the design out with some pretty looking buildings, just to give people an idea of how things will look all built up

that said, we are having a fair bit of trouble uploading the map to a server to get us all on playing with it, so sit tight

in the mean time, i have a few updates and some questions

spawn plaza a little spruced up with some colourful props and there are now flowers etc wooo

people have told me they like the trees but that maybe there's a bit too much treeage, so i think i'll cut out trees from two opposing cornrs and do something different in those spots. thoughts?

the station

i just built a shell because i'd rather get the feel of the place down than spend ages fiddling with pretty interior details but if you asked me to build spawn now for real, based on my experience building the station i would make the walls or the overhead walkway (and by extension the underground section) just a few blocks wider to give me a little more room to work with

i built a few lines out of it just for kicks, though i don't really like that one tunnelling underground. i wanted to get it out of sight to have it veer north because railway lines are a tough one and not everyone agrees if they shou;ld be over ground, underground, if they are ugly or cool or w/e

my original plan was to have four lines coming out of that level, two going north and two carrying on east and then on the lower floor have two lines going south. i guess they'd also be "coming" as well as going but w/e!!. things wouldn't be going west in this plan because that's the sea!!

on the other side of the lines i took a screen to show off the ramparts/wall trim/new outer wall design

they are thicker now to defend from explosions and i gave them some texturey detaily w/e to make them a littlem ore interesting. idrc if we line them with gold blocks or something instead down the front -- i jsut didn't want spawn to be an enormous flat grey block on the horizon. the ramparts themselves are one taller on the outside than the inside because hopefully we won't be facing too many assaults from within the plaza? uhh

turning right (south) i started building out a road into what forks designated as free build, so essentially a residential area. i'll build some example houses later (not to prescribe how people should build, but just to give you an idea!!) but for now i just lined the road with a pavement and it is studded with glowstone floor lights and pretty trees, as you can see here:

anyway like that's us i guess?? let me know how you feel about railroads and the trees in the centre and what style of buildings you'd like to see up top, what should be up top and what should be down below, should down below be open with random facilities or built in as buildings, etc etc

also lol if you look to the left you can see i kind of tried to simulate the sea on forks' map that comes right up to the northern road and it didn't go too well... you;d think i would have learned from the beach

Yeah , Layell said it all. But to repeat him : The googledocs form is still being used but please don't put fake names or dupes in there :) Double whitelisting a person may cause some errors, and going thru a 70+ list of names to find the dupe is a chore.
 
For the trees, it's not so much the trees themselves that look to be the problem so much as it is the dense leaves that connect and block out everything; perhaps trim some of them up and let in some sun?

But yeah, looking real nice so far.

i'm sure we can worry about the random generation of the trees we have when we are actually on the smogcraft server!!
 
Man, I can't wait for the server to go back up. I haven't played much of 1.0.0, and it seems like the multiplayer will be really fun. Also, since the map isn't interim anymore, there will be even nicer buildings!

More server related, I plan on making a redstone museum type thing where people can learn how to use redstone. I figure that sort of thing will help people to make really cool stuff, and help it seem less complicated (until you get to computers, good luck with that).
 
I personally think that if we do have a railway system, it should be a hundred meters or so above ground. This would offer a beautiful—though potentially dangerous—view of the surrounding terrain.
 
You make it sound like stone brick isn't best material ever...just for that, I'm making stone brick huts everywhere.

I do like the prospect of an above ground railway compared to a subterranean one, but for the love of christ can people keep their rails sufficiently lit? My biggest complaint about our old railway was the fact that they were very poorly maintained and it was extremely common to come across a section of track which was untorched or destroyed. Not only does it look like shit, it also makes night travel extremely unsafe.

I'd really like to see a more fleshed out design for our railways so they aren't just floating strips across the skyline. Also, how plausible would it be for us to have concurrent rails running in opposite directions? We'll have a higher demand for iron in the system, but it would be a vast improvement to our old system of "hope that nobody is coming down the same track you are".

Just an idea.
 
I don't think it will be that big of a deal to have 2 way rails since there will be a border set up to prevent more "midnight lines." It will make rail stations a bit more complex and bulkier though. Maybe two floors at each station, one for departures and one for arrivals?

Also penguin I'll help you out with the redstone museum when the time comes. Can't be very difficult compared to making connect 4 hahaha (and not to mention far less redstone-consuming).
 
Name me one time that you hit a person going the opposite way. Most people would use warp spawn to get back so I can't see that happening for all the lines unless we expand a ton and get multiple stops.

But I would like to ban floating rails while not at stations, they should go downwards quite quickly.

It's happened a bit on some of the longer stretches of track (red line/purple line). I've gotten in a cart and gone AFK in transit just to find myself back where I started and an "oops" typed in chat.
 
^ i am going to go design some rails that look nice (would we have to collect the items?,it wont be anything stupid like diamonds blocks tho) and if we don't want rails we can just set up warps at each major towns
 
The biggest issue with the railway on the original server was the fact that a bunch of assholes would forget to destroy the minecarts when they were done (as this returns them to their dispenser). As a result, most of the rails weren't even functional as there were never any minecarts available.

Other than that, I am loving the way the spawn is looking so far. As far as the rails would go, perhaps you could just make it a very long bridge supporting the tracks like a real railway (with supporting pillars touching the ground and all) so it isn't merely a 1 block thick strip floating in the sky.

i like the idea of a more "grand" railway system, hiving a nice looking casing around it. i think that yes they should be above ground and stay at the same level as much as posible, when it reaches a valley or ocean we should build nice big support pillars, like FyreUK (http://www.youtube.com/user/FyreUK) do, it looks realy nice and solves the floating proplem.


Aslo i love the look of the spanw so far =) looks great.
