hey, at the very least he took less money.

I mean, $20 million compared to $23 million? That's a whole $3 million he said no thanks to. What a role model.
 
i don't even...just wow. i thought jayson werth deal was a shocker but this takes the cake.

just cart philadelphia to the world series (at least).

the part that irks me the most is some people calling Amaro a genius. see, that bothers me because by all accounts, Ruben Amaro is an average (probably even worse) GM who lucked into essentially the best spot one could possibly be in. he inherited a WS champion team for the 2009 season, took advantage of his own overrated prospects to boost Lee originally (then he foolishly traded him away for peanuts), took advantage of the fact that his team (the Phillies, who i think were the only real suitors in the Halladay trade sweepstakes) was the preferred destination of Roy Halladay, and swindled the Astros GM (although at this point, who hasn't done that?). This latest Lee deal comes on the heels of the fact that Lee really wanted to play in Philadelphia as well (and it doesn't help that Philly has ramped up extremely its payroll).

anyone here who did their due diligence could probably have assembled the 2011 Phillies team minus the dead weight Ibanez and $125 million albatross Ryan Howard. credit Amaro but being the GM of the Phillies right now is like being the GM of the Yankees minus the evil empire stigma -- they have considerable money to play around with, a great shot year in and year out (for the foreseeable future) to win, and an extraordinarily hungry fanbase. all the good and no the rich get richer bad stigma.

This season is gonna be suspense!. More chances for a Yankees Vs Phillies, but now with Boston back in the playoff picture. It's gonna be a good season all around.
 
I don't know what's more shocking, the fact that Lee left about $30 million on the table or Philly's rotation now. I'd like someone to find a better rotation ever, and I'm not using hyperbole. Three aces, a high number two, and whoever you want to throw in every fifth day is just dirty. In the playoffs you don't even have to pitch Hamels until game four of the NLCS.

Edit: lol yankees now have cc and four large question marks in the rotation since they couldn't get lee.

All true, and idk, I still think Amaro is a fucking moron - sure, it's nice to see Lee back, and we may have the best pitching right now, but that was never our problem last year; the offense was. That money could have been better spent on what we needed, which was NOT Cliff Lee.

You don't even have to pitch Hamels period, depending on the schedule - give Halladay, Oswalt, and Lee 3 days rest.

very true, although i think of the Philly offense as more of a regular season problem. the Lee signing, while extremely surprising, really doesn't help the Phillies as much as one would think. Diminishing returns -- the Philly rotation was already one of the best in baseball, adding another ace does what? Win you 3-4 more games? this team was already a paper 90+ win team, good enough for the playoffs. this move makes them a scarier post-season team, but once again, diminishing returns. How much better is Halladay/Lee/Oswalt than Halladay/Hamels/Oswalt? (swap Oswalt for Hamels in the first rotation if you will).

although the Philly offense was not really bad at all last year. Number 2 in the NL in runs scored, even with all the injury time to Rollins and Utley. the problem i see is moving forward -- this is a very old team. but, honestly, who cares about that? i think any fan would take the chance of 1-3 WS titles in the next 3 years and have a bad team 4 years down the line.
 
I think you guys are forgetting we'll have 40 mil coming off the books in 2 years. Yeah Pretty much all our position starters are in their 30s (everyone but Ibanez under 35) but the Phils will find a way to replenish their farm system while getting some more talent in the FA market.

Now I wouldn't call Amano a "moron" but average would probably the correct word. Nobody is perfect and that huge contract for Howard could be serious deadweight in a few years however the good still outweighs the bad.

I'm fine with a CC, Burnett,Hughes,Joba and Nova. I have hopes for Burnett, i know he's gonna come around again. As for Joba coming out of the bullpen and start, if its something we must do. Then fucket, let's go with it. Nova had a few quality starts, still needs more experience though. It just sucks that he's gonna be in tough games if he gets a starting spot. The AL East is gonna be good. The Orioles may putt up a decent record with the new additions to their roster "Mike Reynolds" and other several heads. The Blue Jays made a a good run last year, let's see what they will bring this year. Brandon Morrow is a bad ass pitcher for them, probably the best pitcher in that squad.

All i know is, this upcoming season is gonna INTENSE!
 
Well I'm sad to see Cliff Lee leave my Rangers , but I gotta say I respect him alot for taking less money/years on his contract to go back and play for a team he loves.

I'm not sure that matters. A run prevented is the same as a run scored.
 
^ sure I will. My baseball player knowledge is only ok but I was the same with the NFL a few years ago and came third in my first season (so I'm a quick learner).
 
I'm definitely in. I was actually going to ask if there would be a Smogon fantasy baseball league. Baseball is definitely my best (read: favorite) fantasy sport.
 
I run the smogon fantasy hockey league, and I would definitely be down to run this if we could get 12 (ideally) guys. Baseball is my best fantasy sport and it would be my pleasure to wipe the floor with you guys ;)
