Metagame National Dex Metagame Discussion

Anyone else find the defoggers in this tier to be kinda....shit?

Been playing stall for reqs and I feel like the wincon of spamming hazards -> win was giga free on the ladder because most of the hazard control options like Zapdos, Lando-T, etc. that players ran matched up horribly vs many of the actual hazard setters. In my case I ran Chansey + Gliscor, but other hazard setters like Ferrothorn / Garganacl are also really annoying for a lot of the tier's defoggers. Other Pokemon like Lando-T also exerted decent pressure on the defoggers themselves with Taunt.

Preventing Hazards from being set up in the first place with Mega Sableye was often easier than Defogging imo, though with mega sableye, some stuff could be a bit awkward since there were a lot of cases I didn't actually want to Mega Evolve it for the faster Wisp / Knock (relevant vs the average rain team). This was the case for me as well when facing opponent's who ran Magic Bounce Pokemon like Mega Sabeleye / Hatterene / sometimes Diancie when It was not immediately sacked.

The only really decent defogger with longevity vs the hazard setters was Gliscor imo. All the rest like Zapdos / Lando-T / Corv etc. were extremely exploitable whenever I played against them. Tornadus-T was another one I suppose, but the set they ran never really pressured Chansey too well.

Against random offensive leads, I see the merit of defogging more - most of these offensive Pokemon don't actually stick around for long like Glimmora / Mega Diancie, with defoggers moreso being pressured by the offensive threat level of these teams via constant setup + high damage, as well as Taunt pressure. Nonetheless, against all other means of teams, Defogging seemed to be very difficult to do on a consistent basis or simply didn't have an effect because nothing stops the hazard setters like Gliscor or Chansey from just setting up hazards again on the Defoggers.

There is also the issue that Defogging is a net negative on your own pressure. Half the time, I am relieved when the opponent Defogs and their pressure against my balanced / defensive core vanishes because I don't have to worry about the hazards that they set up. Furthermore, many of the Defog Pokemon like Zapdos and Lando-T wind up exerting less pressure because that is one less free moveslot for them to run.

All this makes me wonder why boots spam teams aren't more of a staple in this format. I feel this is a far more consistent strategy against many of the hazard setters rather than relying on Defog and praying the opponent doesn't have a hazard setter with an ounce of longevity (Gliscor, Ferrothorn, Garganacl, Chansey, even Lando-T in some instances, etc.).

IT IS OFFICIAL BOYZ...
TERA IS NO MORE!

It is definetly an exiciting time in our natdex community. Let's us hope that this was the wall we needed to brake in order to make our metagame a better one. I feel sorry for those Tera enjoyers, as I for one wasn't even 100% pro tera, and tought tera did had some unique and interesting applications. But it was probably for the best. As for now, LETS CHEER FOR A NEW DAWN!

Best news I've woken up to in a long time. Thank you everyone who participated in the suspect and voted (whether ban or no ban), it was really cool to see such a huge voter turnout and I hope we get more people interested in the tier! I think it's got a lot of potential for cool stuff (especially with Tera gone now). So new players who are coming by, welcome!

On that note I've got some thoughts about winners and losers of the Tera ban but I'll just hold off for now and just wait to play some games. Pretty freaking excited.

it is a glorious day indeed for those of us who opposed the terastallization mechanic. unfortunately this does come with a heavy nerf to my goats kyurem and dnite but this is but a minor loss for the continued health of natdex ou

Oh well, didn't mind either outcome of this suspect. A lot of players in gen 9 dislike Tera, so National dex not having it will likely be a breathe of fresh air for players tired of most gen 9 tiers.

Main thing I am interested in still is the unbans. Terap, Melm, eleki are a given, but I have hopes that the council will be extremely lenient on unbans, especially given that many of the banned Pokemon like Kingambit, Gholdengo, and Zamazenta check each other. I think it would be a waste to slowly suspect each Pokemon one by one rather than starting from scratch and re-evaluating most Pokemon in a metagame with their best checks in tact. A lot of the other banned Pokemon like Baxcalibur, Roaring Moon, Dragapult, etc. should be looked at as well.

Congratulations. Yall didn't fumble! But now the more important step, what comes next. We can unban a decent amount of shit, and this can be approached incorrectly. Personally, I'd suggest a complete tiering restructuring and being quite generous with what gets a new look. This is practically a brand new tier and while im not saying free everybody, I'm saying that you should treat this like a DLC release in a proper tier and unban quite a number. (and locking this thread for 48 hours yall gonn need to CHILL LMAOOO), As for those numbers? I'll elaborate.

Immediately unban:

These 3 go without saying, I think its unanimous that they will be either garbage or named melmetal without tera so free them pretty much no matter what.

Consider the Following:

These four are likely but have small chances of being broken without tera, and are prime options to bring in as testing grounds. Zamazenta can no longer tera on its IBDP sets, which makes setting up less easily. Although its opposition cannot tera ghost in response I believe this is a fair trade. Gholdengo was banned very early in the tier, and while tera wasn't its whole game, it was a good chunk of it. Now it can't tera out of fellow drop candidate Kingambit's pursuit/sucker 50/50s, among other interactions like tera flying for tusks. But it may be too annoying with z moves to handle. Kingambit is the people's choice, the coolest mon they've dropped in a decade and this is knock and pursuit too? Of course, Supreme overlord suckers are pretty damn stupid so while it's the least likely to be busted here, I'd still be cautious. Terapagos is entirely incapable of going to its 3rd form, and loses a massive chunk of its bullshit potential, and its power. This would make it an effective, but more manageable HO wincon and is worth trying it out. Though, starstorm and a fat movepool w restochesto might prove too silly. Hearthflame cannot access its second form or the innate ability attack boost, which heavily curbs its offensive DPS. its longevity was already poor, but its also an incredible threat that combos very nicely with Zard Y.

The HO shitheads.

Obnoxious? Sure. Broken? I dunno about that. I frankly wouldn't argue that much if they didn't get a 2nd chance but it cannot be denied their effectively was HEAVILY rooted within tera. Of course they are still servicable without it and espathra is still just fishing for MU wins, but the effectively is gutted so heavily that I cannot call them the same beasts anymore. They should be freed, but I won't come to their defense considering their latent bullshit.

Alright, Hear Me Out:

Yes, that is a Lugia. This pokemon is just weak im sorry, and quite passive to boot. It's extremely prone to status and sand whenever its not using substitute sets or a partner cleric, its typing frankly sucks and while its absurdly bulky it takes awhile to start posing a threat to things with subcm sets. If we move to free Kingambit and Gholdengo, I think there's a chance; albeit small that it's fine in practice. We have a completely new meta and its completely unrecognizable, I think it's alright if you greed on the unbans a bit. If we gave kyurem-blacks dumbass a chance we can have the discussion on Lugia. Psychic noise did give it some offensive utility but it's still quite meager. Giratina also makes it here for slightly similar reasons. It's not as weak, sporting superior 100s and better offensive clicks, but worse speed spikes vulnerability and no reliable recovery. It can't escape its vulnerability to help snowball itself further. Prone to status aswell but this thing has more options and compatibility with Z crystals on CM sets to be a threat beyond that.

The rest are less hard to pitch, but still have large concerns. Palafin still sports an absurd BST and CB/BU sets which change the gameplan vs it quite well, alongside nice Z crystal compatibility. However, tera water on CB sets and tera fairy/imagination on BU sets were a large part of their effectiveness. Rain has seen a nerfing with Tera gone, so I think the idea of entertaining Palafin is worth it. Annihilape is similar. Rage fist is stupid it rlly is, but now that ghost/fighting cannot be changed off it's harder to say this thing is hopelessly broken. Z moves and natdex's absurd nukes like Zard Y and specs lele allow to gut through apes BU sets on stronger teams. While it will still maul bulkier styles, I cannot say its lack of reliable recovery or hazard vulnerability will get it very much praise from me. Probably stupid, but worth considering. Dragapult is stupid, but Kingambit's absurd dominance kept it in check quite nicely last time we allowed it even with tera, which was a part of its game. Ghostium z sets will be horseshit as expected, but it might be manageable once more.

Mega Metagross... I don't care if it got buffed to the statosphere if we doing mass unbans let me guy in GIVE ME MY TWO WEEKS OF FUN!!!! No item flexibility and honestly its dogshit boosting capabilities will still hold it back quite a bit. No longevity either please PLEASE GIVE ME MY FUN

Ok real talk though, please do not be conservative with what gets freed. I'm not gonna expect you guys to free garbage like Bax, Gouging and other setup monsters, but the less egregious picks do deserve a chance in a tier that's been completely upended. There's truly no reason not to, you have a wonderful blank slate open now why not atleast use it.
