There's nothing wrong with giving people a heads up when they're being talked about behind their backs... It gives them a chance to realize something about what they're doing and amend their behavior. And it's honest. They way he brought it up could have been a little more civil, however.

What you're saying is true, but it's more about how he went about doing it. He went around asking stuff along the lines of "Do you think Gengen is annoying" intentionally trying to get people to show their ass. In retrospect, this really isn't that big a deal; I don't know, something about him doing this really peeves me.

Dude you're like 13 or something right? When I was 13/14 I was really immature, pissed off all the mods and stuff much like you're doing now so I took the hint and lurked for awhile. I only added posts to music and stuff that I actually knew something about, and it helped me grow as a user. Don't feel bad and that its like you are the only person that this happens to, its inevitable really when there's 13 year olds and 20 year olds using the same forum. Its not a bad thing because everyone went through this at one point, but seriously just post when you feel you have something to add to the conversation. And try not to draw so much attention to yourself, if you're under the radar life on smogon will be a lot nicer.

Now that you've gotten your IRC problem taken care of, I almost wanted to edit the thread title to something along the lines of "Do you think xxpokemonmasterxx is really a troll", and turn this thread into users giving out their opinions/thoughts on you. because really, and especially earlier on when you first joined, It was very hard to tell whether you were an actual member trying to join this community, or if you were just a master troll. you certainly made it hard for some of us to decide which of the two you were.

But listen here xxpokemonmasterxx, i'll try to be very nice about this so read very carefully.

It seems that the thread is now turning into a bashing fest, but even that is something that can be blamed directly on you because you failed to see what people in this thread were trying to tell you, so they started to get a little bit more aggressive trying to still get that same message across to you. You are angry because in your eyes, and this is completely true i am on your side on this one, it seems that everyone is just picking on you and only you. 90% of the time you post it leads to a mess like this, that is a ridiculous rate so it is only natural that you seem to think everyone is picking on only you, but please keep in mind that you are not the only one being picked on. I can think of at least 2 others that can make this claim, and 1 of them has been enduring it for months and deserves to whine more than you are doing at the very moment. But only you are whining, only you seem to be drawing even more attention to yourself (and that is negative attention so you are doing yourself no favors here). when i compare you to those other 2 people, this becomes part of your problem here on smogon (i hope this wasn't confusing to you, if it was, feel free to ask me to elaborate). also i want you to know that there are a lot of prominent users today that started out very badly, some even worse than you are doing so far, so don't be so quick to make claims of "you guys are meanies, i am leaving". it seems that you are genuinely confused/blind to the situation, so who knows who/what you may become once you become....um, better?


Edit: you know if you cooled down, maybe go for a nice walk or something, and came back in a better more relaxed state of mind, then read this page again you would find a lot of great advice. Another thing you would find is that most of these people are actually trying to be nice and help you instead of being mean to you. you havent really seen smogon "being mean" to someone yet, trust me on that one

This is an incredibly self aware post, and I applaud Gengan for making it.

Pokemonmaster, I have been exceedingly patient with you so far, attempting to give you advice on how you can improve yourself and avoid all this bashing you're receiving. I find it particularly irritating that you would make a blanket statement like we are ALL pretentious and elitist. I know it's foreign to you right now because the crowd you hang out with in real life is vastly different than on here. A lot of our users are older teens and even twenties, so our interests will be different than yours and it will be difficult for you to relate to us. This is why there's a disconnect. You don't understand why you're being made fun of because you don't understand why your behavior is wrong. This is why we advise people to not post right away when they join the site, but to instead "lurk", so they can study our culture and learn how we do things.

Can we be a bit elitist? Sure. Are some of our users pretentious? This is the internet, so it would be a lie to say no. Your biggest problem is that you insist on having an answer to all of your questions right now, and that is simply not going to happen. If you learn to be patient, study, and make an active effort to get better, we will embrace you into our community and forget all about this nonsense that has happened so far. Believe me, the vast majority of our users started out where you are right now, and many have grown into prominent members of the community.

The thing you need right now, more than anything else, is humility. You're going to be criticized, and it's probably going to continue for a bit longer. Don't get upset with us, try listening and reading what we say. Also, and I can't stress this enough, stop posting for at least 30 days. Even if someone talks about you directly, read it and move on. Spend this time reflecting on what has happened, read lots of threads to see what good posts look like, and study how to be better. In the future, any time you're about to make a post, stop and read it over a couple of times first. Make sure you're not responding in anger or emotion, because that just escalates things. If you can learn to do this stuff, you will become just another normal user and nobody will bother you. If you continue to be needy and pester us to give you answers all the time you will incur the wrath of the community and most likely get yourself banned. I'm ready and willing to help you, but you need to heed my advice.
