With its amazing base 65 special defense. I faced one today and it couldn't do shit but spam EQ and let me set up because of rain. My opponent wasn't bad at all
Obviously the player wasn't all that experienced, or was playing badly, or not thinking. A well EV trained Quagsire is 4HKO'd by Scarf Kyogre, which means if your Manaphy hasn't set up, he can just safely Encore whatever you're going to do (Since you're running Ice Beam). Things like Vaporeon can also Roar you out if you think you can Tail Glow, racking up some residual damage. Again, your Manaphy isn't uncounterable at all, quite the opposite. By EVing so much in defense, you're not going to outspeed many things either, so while you might kill something, that something is probably going to have dented you enough so something hard hitting is going to outspeed you and KO you later. Yes, I know revenge killing is not a good argument, the point is, Manaphy is not going to be sweeping a big portion of the opponent's team, and for what it is worth (3 turns is a lot of setup), it's probably not worth it either.
Even then, I can just outpredict everything you do, keep Manaphy alive no matter what, and maintain a massive advantage throughout the battle.
"A good set/theme in the hands of a good player is deadly" is never a good argument. Of course it's going to be deadly. Someone can do something like Baton Pass speed to Marowak and let it sweep, but that doesn't make Marowak Uber by any means. If you outpredict a player and keep Manaphy alive (Note, your strategy is completely exposed, and Rain is getting burned up), that Manaphy is probably going to end up dead weight since Rain is either going to prevented, other Pokemon are going to set-up so even RainRest is garbage, or they can just predict a switch and kill Manaphy. If you outpredict the opponent in that sort of occasion, well done, you outplayed your opponent, Manaphy did not.
With its amazing base 65 special defense. I faced one today and it couldn't do shit but spam EQ and let me set up because of rain. My opponent wasn't bad at all, but I faced him twice already and it was getting to the point where he couldn't do anything about Manaphy except put Roar on every Pokemon and use two sandstorm summoners so as not to let me set up. The only problem was that no matter how many times he roared me out, or canceled the rain, Manaphy got its full recovery anyway and TTar had to die eventually. From that point on, nothing stopped it from running through his team.
Ok since you are obviously refering to me:
Hippowdon is there to cover a TTar weakness, TTar is there for Latias. Manaphy had nothing to do with it. "From that point on" happened like 50 moves into the game, after Manaphy came in for the 6th time. And there was 1 phazer. Finally, you needed a CH with Ice Beam to actually take out Quagsire.
See, I just run Energy Ball on my Manaphy. Swampert and Quagsire come in and explode violently. This opens Manaphy up to neutral hits on Empoleon at best, but still, Swampert (and I guess Quagsire) seem to be more common currently.
See, I just run Energy Ball on my Manaphy. Swampert and Quagsire come in and explode violently. This opens Manaphy up to neutral hits on Empoleon at best, but still, Swampert (and I guess Quagsire) seem to be more common currently.
Swampert has been on a lot of the teams I've faced (I haven't seen Quagsire, though). Some Swampert run Protect simply to scout for Energy Ball. However, I agree that Energy Ball has been more effective than HP Electric this round. Swampert with Roar can't stop it, because Manaphy outspeeds. I don't see as many Gyarados (or Vaporeon) this time, probably because every team is stocking up with Steel types,Tyranitar, and Blissey to combat Latias.
Just some random thoughts, Thunder Wave and basically Paralysis in general have been a great tool; it literally stops every sweeper: Latias, Scarftar, Manaphy.
DD Mence also has been more of a threat, since almost every Latias is running Specs and not Scarf. It can set up on ScarfTar's EQ and sweep, provided Stealth Rock support. However, I'm guessing it should be relatively easy to predict around random Outrages. And if one runs Dragon Claw, it needs Manaphy to be below 70% health to be able to kill it.
Manaphy with Rain support imo is futile, Wacan Berry or Leftovers. Specs Latias still OHKOs, and Magnezone/Jirachi/Starmie/any strong Electric-type attack user will give it horrible time. With Tyranitar on so many teams and Roar/Whirlwind from Swampert/Skarmory, it can be excruciatingly hard to set up Rain and Tail Glow. Rain support leads like Bronzong are stopped quickly by Taunt leads.
My specially bulky togekiss has been a great asset to spread paralysis around. Not even a +2 manaphy can ohko this thing with sr damage. Lucario is of course essential to beat up on scarftar when it tries to stone edge it. I wouldn't be surprised if lucario usage is immense this suspect test, it's the perfect teammate for latias. I run a specially based agility/hp ice one and it's highly effective. I've been quite good at nailing latias switch ins with dark pulse though.
I have to disagree. Mix Kingdra and SD Kabutops are renowned for being some of the most proficient sweepers especially with rain support although they can set it up themselves. Both these pokemon are especially good because of the superb coverage they get with just their two moves something Manaphy wishes for. Why exactly is Manaphy easier to counter then these pokemon that have higher base attack moves/stat and a way higher speed. Its clearly not the case.
Kingdra has more hard counters than Manaphy, which include Empoleon, Suicune, and Milotic. Actually, bulky waters in general have a tendency to give him hell and prevent him from sweeping, as they usually have a lot of sp. def, decent physical defense, Haze, and Water absorb. He can't run a moveset that accommodates them all.
First of all who cares about being walled by these pokemon. Suicune, the only pokemon of these regularly used cant do anything to Kingdra in return. Not only this in the rain Hydro Pump does - 33.4% - 39.4% and the following Draco Meteor does 52.2% - 61.6%. With SR that is pretty much a guaranteed kill on the switch. Milotic and defensive Empoleon probably survive though both are never used. Whilst the average Petaya Boost variant takes 39.4% - 46.8%. Furthermore these are hardly hard counters, what exactly are they doing in return? Maybe Toxic but that probably won't buy them enough time. So, are these really hard counters?
Okay, we've realized that activity on the Suspect Ladder is even more modest than in previous tests. Therefore, Aeolus and I have decided to curtail Stage 3-4, due to a combination of: anxiety to conduct slated tests; current subject material being identical to that of the previous test; increased awareness of our time frame. We will keep the ladder open for the rest of the day (a little over two hours), after which point no more battles will be considered for the Stage 3-4 test.
On the one hand, I am disappointed because this probably means I won't get to the required level to vote if a vote even happens, but on the other it's nice that it's done with. I probably would've played more if SU weren't loaded with 400 people all the time and lagging miserably. Oh well.
Man, if only more of those people were playing suspect.. that's why it got ended. 9_9 Whenever I was on, I found it difficult to get a battle, and if I got one it was the one person spamming find match like I was.
=), its cool thats its coming to an end. I mean 3-3 and 3-4 are same games, it shouldn't really need more time since gen 5 is coming soon. Finding matches were also ridiculous. After the first week, it took me hours to find a match. The longest probably for 3 hours during times 11pm-3am PST and I didn't even get a match. I am disappointed that there weren't more people out there playing in a more regular basis because this test is probably the most game-defining test to define our metagame.
I'd been meaning to start playing more again tomorrow. I'm sad to say that I've had a rather abysmal amount of wins in this round... I played about half the battles that I did in 3-3, but my win ratio is also about half that of 3-3 D: I also kind of wanted to try SJCrew's Manaphy EV spread.
EDIT: I find it rather odd that we've had much more discussion on both Manaphy and Latias in this stage despite the lack of participation. I suppose only a select group of people actually have a propensity to bother to talk about the suspect tests.
I think there's actually been increased interest in the stage due to its 'repetitiveness' and a desire to see it come to an end. Whether there's been an increased expression of interest remains to be seen.
The reason there's no one on is that no one can make a good team very quickly. So everyone is testing like a different team every day. And eventually get tired of failing and give up. Also there has been more discussion due to 4 people really stating their opinions and all their arguments.
Pleased to end on a near-full Manaphy sweep (I swept 5 healthy Pokemon with no hax, versus a player in the top 5 of the ladder... he even had Choice Scarf Roserade, Rotom, Expert Belt Jirachi with Thunderbolt, and Curse + Payback Tyranitar). I really think every person who has downplayed how great Rain Rest Manaphy is did not use it themselves. Hell, I didn't even use a team fully designed to supporting Manaphy, but I found myself sweeping with it in a large chunk of my matches.
The underrated guy in this test is definitely Specs Manaphy. I think I was the only one who tried it out and liked it so much to keep and keep using it. The thing is just incredible, possibly even better than Specs Latias considering the excellent coverage Surf gives you, even resisting things take like 35% from it. Most things that take on Manaphy rely on being very healthy to either take a +2 Surf and then OHKO, or switch in on a resisted attack/TG and then proceed to hit hard. Specs Manaphy can totally destroy that kind of counters, specially with layer support since even Latias takes over 30% to just switch in on Surf, if it switches in on Ice Beam its OHKOd, and theres always the threat of U-Turning out to a counter. Passho Heatran is OHKOd at 65~%, Scizor is OHKOd after SR and Spikes, other offensive Manaphys take over 40% to just switch in, and Mence takes over 50% as well. The raw power Specs Manaphy packs is enough for me to call it Uber. And im not even considering the other options like Tail Glow, Rain Dance Bulky and all, because if I did right now I would probably consider it... SuperUber!
Too bad this is ending, my shoddy time was very limited so I barely got in any matches, I'm sure I won't make the voting list. I was really hoping that I would get a day to spam and make the list.
From my experience I would vote Latias Uber and Manaphy OU. I used a Specs Latias on my team, and the power of it was just incredible. I also had way more troubles against opposing Latais (though having a Scarf-Tar helped, if he was gone she was a bitch) than against Manaphy. I never found myself getting swept by Manaphy(well one time when my Tar's Stone Edge decided to miss).
That Specs Manaphy sounds good rey, wish I had had a chance to try it out.
I'm pretty sure I did not get swept by a single manaphy. I might have when I tried out an empoleon+manaphy team which I couldn't get to work, but that wasn't my standard team. I ended up just off the leaderboard this time.
Okay. The coffee is gone, it's nearly 6am, I didn't get home from work until 10:30pm, I've played a lot so if I don't qualify, I will cry. Good night :) (I did play throughout though! Not just tonight :)
While I support the decision to end the test early, I think some advance notice would have been nice. Shoddy problems + irl things prevented me from playing much during the past week and a half, so I was planning to hit the ladder hard/work my way back up to the top part of LB over the next few days to compensate for the time away. Ah well...I guess we'll see what happens.
I still do not believe (for reasons I listed in a post a page or two back) the Crophy set can be considered Uber when we allow Crocune in our OU. Specs Manaphy sounds interesting--would have liked to play around with that had the test continued.
Man, if only more of those people were playing suspect.. that's why it got ended. 9_9 Whenever I was on, I found it difficult to get a battle, and if I got one it was the one person spamming find match like I was.
It was pretty annoying to face the same people like five times in a row on the ladder :P I was also hoping to ladder a lot more the rest of the weekend, but oh well. I hope I qualify, though!
Every time I tried to ladder, no one was on. For roughly all of last week I just had Shoddy sitting there waiting for someone to show. From my experience last test, Manaphy is really close to the border there. It has huge potential but has enough weaknesses that it could go either way. The amount of counters varies from set to set and is very dependent on certain attack choices. Latias I have thought to be Uber for a very long time now. I was using the Specs set before it was cool, and it opened up enormous holes in my opponents' teams. What really makes it Uber is its ability to nullify almost any regular counter with Trick. Her incredible ability to CM like a pro makes guessing tough. I wish people had been on the ladder when I was...
Phil whenever you come here you just say I sweep with manaphy. Please explain how you did this. Go into detail so we understand. As really the only one who understands why you think manaphy is uber is you.

I tried it in both Stage 3-2 and 3-3, on my rain team which I replaced Ludicolo with. In 3-2, it worked like crap, but is understandable because everyone and their mum used Tyranitar and Garchomp. In Stage 3-3, it worked slightly better, but not significantly enough, and this is when I realised that it wasn't worth it, so I welcomed back Ludicolo with open arms.
CM Mono Rain Rest Manaphy was actually better in 3.2 than in 3.3/3.4 because Garchomp can tank those electric attacks that Manaphy was so scared of. In my 3.2 games, Manaphy was almost always the last one standing in my teams and destroyed many teams, especially stall. During the 3.4 test, i didn't have much of a chance to use CM Mono Manaphy because I was testing Scarf throughout the test. But when it was used against me, it was a bitch and I lost approximately 2 out of 4 battles that had it.
I still do not believe (for reasons I listed in a post a page or two back) the Crophy set can be considered Uber when we allow Crocune in our OU. Specs Manaphy sounds interesting--would have liked to play around with that had the test continued.
I have never understood why people even attempt to compare Rain Rest Manaphy with Crocune. As someone who has used both sets extensively in his years of playing Pokemon, I can assure you, they do not play even remotely similarly. Do people not understand the huge benefit in being able to heal to 100% without leaving your move selection up to chance for the next two turns, being able to do so every other turn instead of every three turns, all the while being able to outspeed a huge majority of the game? Also, the extra base Special Attack is significant after a few Calm Minds, and the boost you get from Rain is hard to ignore. Crocune only DREAMS it could be as efficient as Manaphy (literally... get it?), because at any point in time while it's sleeping, its opponent has a 2/3 chance to do whatever it wants for free. This includes Phazing, setting up, attacking, whatever. As for calculations, how do you like these bananas:
New Mix Mence Draco Meteor vs. +1 Manaphy: 43.1% - 50.7%
Standard Dragon Dance Mence LO Outrage vs. Manaphy: 53.7% - 63.4% (don't even say "oh look! 2HKO!" because you will seriously sound dumb when you forget to take into account that Manaphy can just use Rest and heal it all off... which is what I always lead with when facing Mences with Manaphy)
Scarf Tyranitar Stone Edge vs. Manaphy: 34.9% - 41.1%
Leaf Storm from Choice Scarf Roserade vs. +1 Manaphy: 73.3% - 86.6% (again, just rest and lol @ the SpA drop)
Choice Specs Latias Thunderbolt vs. +1 Manaphy: 45.5% - 54%
Choice Specs Latias Thunderbolt vs. +2 Manaphy: 34.2% - 40.6% (AKA, Calm Mind in Latias's face the first turn, then Rest the second to be back to full health... then keep Calm Minding)
For reference, here is the exact Manaphy set I was using:
So much for faster attackers easily killing Rain Rest Manaphy I guess. I will admit though that the immediate damage output from this Manaphy is far from overwhelming, but as you can see, it's very easy for Manaphy to just take hits and continually set up Calm Minds until it OHKOs everything.
That being said, I hope to explain further how Rain Rest Manaphy plays differently from, and is better than Crocune in the log below in my response to the next poster.
Phil whenever you come here you just say I sweep with manaphy. Please explain how you did this. Go into detail so we understand. As really the only one who understands why you think manaphy is uber is you.
Though these were the most common, other checks I saw on the ladder include:
Raikou
Celebi
Roserade
Now, do you see any similarities? That's right, every single one of these Pokemon lose to Scarf Tyranitar. Basically, Manaphy is so damn easy to use if you play it correctly with Scarf Tyranitar. For a lot of matches, I found myself showing Manaphy mid-game, then immediately switching to Tyranitar as my opponent went to one of these Pokemon. Then boom, one Manaphy check down, just like that. I cannot think of a single other OU Pokemon who can pair up with another OU Pokemon so easily to get rid of 90% of its checks. This strategy works just as well with Waccan Manaphy, as it basically means you need THREE Manaphy checks on your team, just to take it out when played well with Scarf Tyranitar. If that doesn't provide Manaphy with an "easy" way of sweeping the majority of the metagame, then I don't know what does. Finally, after that is done, I usually scout my opponent for any Trick users, and then kill off the rest of my team once they are eliminated. Now Manaphy comes in and doesn't have to worry about being phazed, and can set up knowing that its biggest counter on the opponent's team is gone.
Anyways, as for how to actually play Rain Rest Manaphy once it's out (and also an example of how it plays so differently from Crocune), here is a log of what I referred to earlier (with my opponent's name censored out, because I did not ask for his permission to post this):
