I am a slack fuck... Again. I blame University assignments and exams for that.

Anyhow, giving this thread a bit of an epic bump for some more untiered entries because we need to get activity into this thread again... ×_×

Why did I put Carvanha in Central for some reason

Discussion should focus more on getting these things tiered and less on tier shifting for now so we can reach a point where write-ups can become more feasible (or continue to phase towards that point or whatever).

That said based on a whim I will propose these for instant tiering mainly based on wild guesses and theory (which is bad practice but...). Anyhow:

Burmy (Mothim): N/A -> D-Tier
Carvanha: N/A -> E-Tier
Ducklett: N/A -> D-Tier
Espurr (F): N/A -> D-Tier
Espurr (M): N/A -> D-Tier
Goldeen: N/A -> D-Tier

Yes I put all central mons up
I am very open to possible changes since I am guessing most of these but this thread needs me to be active again... -.-'

These are not final changes and are wild mass guesses at heart but yeah. You can still talk about other things but I would rather at the moment it focus on making sure I made the right move on all these things / did not make a major screw-up with my guesses... >_>

Thoughts?

Pretty much agree with Skiddo for C tier. He's actually been pretty strong for me through out this game, but the number of random fire/poison types the evil team has has limited his usage quite severely. Hawlucha is been absolutely great though, def B tier (if not higher).

I've been training a Jynx but from much earlier in the game (Not from Ice cavern), I'd probably slap it down in D tier because it has some utility later on against Dragons, but it has pretty bad matchups and not great typing.

EDIT: At above: Ledyba should be F tier, everything else I pretty much agree with atm. May change when I use some of them.

Agreeing on dropping Ledyba to F. Base 35 and 55 attacking stats (Ledian) with most of its level up movepool utilising the former. Typing alone gives it some crap gym matchups too.. I actually love Ledian but damn it is bad

I did an all eevee + starter run for kicks (what can I say? It's my fave) so I can shotgun out my opinion on their effectiveness. Don't have to take it at face value since none of these are full write-ups.

Vaporeon - D Water ain't that great in this game gym-wise.
Flareon - C Odd but hear me out. Flare Blitz comes at level 45 which is just a little after the point where 95 SpAtk and/or Fire Fang ceases to cut it. Decent gym performance too (tanks the fairy one, and is good on elec, grass, and ice gyms. Okayish on the steel elite four member).
Jolteon - D The buff to ghost really helped it's movepool issues. Not very good gym coverage, but has the stats to contribute. The problem is that you are stuck with thunder fang until you beat the electric gym.
Espeon - D Same as Jolteon really, but more immediately helpful (due to the fighting gym) in contrast to harder to evolve.
Umbreon - E (or F?) Really can't do much but take hits. Gym performance is sub-par too.

It's important to get the level 19 ones so you get the corresponding level 20 attack after they evolve.

Didn't use Glaceon and Leafeon, but if I had to guess D and E respectively. They both come too late to do much (Glaceon just edging out because it is a little earlier). Really only good for one elite four member each doesn't help much either. Sylveon has already been discussed.

You forgot Ferroseed being ranked.

Spritzee and Swirlix both being D-tier WITH trade seems very harsh. I haven't used them personally, but by theorymonning and watching others they seemed pretty good. If anyone has used them, perhaps they could vouch for either side, as, like I said I've not used them myself.

I think you're being a bit too harsh on the Eeveelutions. Water may not be good coverage against the gyms, but Vaporeon does very well against Team Flare with Water STAB and Aurora Beam. It can also take hits well, which is a plus. I'd say low B or high C.

True, with Jolteon you're stuck with Thunder Fang as a damaging move until you beat Clemont. But Jolteon also gets Thunder Wave, which is excellent for catching wild Pokemon. Furthermore, after it gets Thunderbolt, it becomes a force to be reckoned with: Base 110 SpA and 130 Speed is nothing to laugh at. Jolteon also does well against Team Flare, mainly due to their use of Golbat, although admittedly Vaporeon does better. I'd put Jolteon in C-tier.

I have no complaints with Flareon, although it's worth mentioning that Lava Plume has that nice 30% burn rate, which is handy against physical attackers. Scary Face is also useful, considering the AI's inability to switch.

Espeon should not be in the same tier as Jolteon. Espeon is obviously much better. Although I agree it's much harder to evolve if you want Psybeam, if you do manage to get it, Espeon can roflstomp through Korrina's entire gym (Minus that one Knock Off Hariyama). And even if you don't, you still get Future Sight, which has almost double the BP of Psybeam in exchange for it hitting 2 turns later. I'd say Low B-tier for Espeon.

Umbreon does not belong in F-tier. Period. Look at the mons in F-tier: Luvdisc, the heart fish thing who Smogon's designated punching bag and can't deal damage or take it. Wobbuffet, who actually gets worse as it levels up. Ditto, who has 48 base everything until it transforms, and then it's a weakened version of whatever it's battling that still has 48 base HP. Onix, who has awful SpD and is 4x weak to Water and Grass, in addition to having an Attack stat equal to Pidgey. Now look at Umbreon: It has base 130 SpD, 110 Defense, and 95 HP. Feint Attack is actually decent early to mid-game, especially considering the amount of Double Team users. When you get to Route 14, you get Toxic, which Umbreon can use in conjunction with Moonlight to stall out most of the remaining game after Valerie. Umbreon also does very well against the 7th gym, being immune to Psychic. If you're willing to break the unwritten rules, Umbreon is also a good user of Double Team and Confuse Ray. True, Umbreon doesn't hit hard, and will not be able to pull its weight until you hit Route 14, so I'd say D-tier for Umbreon.

Leafeon and Glaceon are probably accurate since they don't come until so late in the game and Eevee just isn't that good other than being incredibly adorable. <3

Note that I have not actually used the Eeveelutions in a playthrough - this is all theorymon, so take it with a grain of salt.

Umbreon is more E-Tier than D-Tier imo. Most of the things said about it in past tier lists generally apply here, except it is not bottom of the barrel because it is not a real "epic fail" mon. Base 65 Attack as its best attacking stat is very mediocre and it is not that fast either. It also lacks a completely good STAB move (its best physical STAB move is Base 60 Power) and Dark Pulse does not really count since a) Base 60 Sp. Attack is not really good either and b) You cannot get it until basically the end of the game and well and truly out of the way. Moonlight is okay since it gives it a bit of sustain and makes things a bit easier on your items pocket and it is very bulky, which means it will not go down easily. On the other hand it is not doing much back and basically, it all adds up to being quite an inefficient Pokémon in an efficient run-through. Clear cut E-Tier. At least it comes quite early in the game and not at the end hahaha.

That said, any more opinions on all those proposed Pokémon I talked about at the top of this page?

I think that list is fine. At this point we're basically sorting "bad" from "really bad", so as long as they are lower than the good Pokemon then it's good. I'll comment on some of them though. Feel free to disregard or whatever.

I think that putting Mothim in D is maybe a bit generous. I guess there is something to be said about the fact that both of its offenses are equally "high", which means it can use both the Struggle Bug (special) and Aerial Ace (physical) TMs for decent early-game STABs, but in the end you are basically forced to baby a Burmy until level 20, with the end result being a slow frail bug with merely decent offenses and very few favorable match-ups. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh but perhaps E would be better?

I kinda feel similar about Masquerain, and I also agree with dropping Ledyba to F.

I'm sort of borderline about Pansear between C and D. I mean, it's caught very early and learns a base 60 power STAB at level 10 in Incinerate, followed by a fantastic match-up in the first gym. Also, I think there's a Fire Stone on that route where you ride the Rhyhorn, which means early evolution! Fire is actually not too bad in XY either, with several good match-ups (admittedly there are some bad one too). But then its movepool is a bit thin (Fire STAB, Grass Knot, and some physical moves) so...

I'm not sure what that would mean for the other monkeys (are they worse?), but that's just sort of how I feel.

Weighing in on the eeveelutions; I think Glaceon/Leafeon should be E tier as you have to carry Eevee until you reach their rocks so they can not contribute in any gym. Glaceon can sweep Drasna and do some work against Diantha (can hit everything SE bar Aurorus with Ice Beam / Shadow ball) but that's it. Leafeon is even worse, coming right before the 8th gym (which it is weak to) and can't even cleanly sweep Siebold thanks to Gyarados an gets hard walled by the other Elite 4 members...

I think you're being a bit too harsh on the Eeveelutions.

Well I did and I hate to tell you but it was pretty rough. You might have a point about Vaporeon, she does get better much later in the game just not when you get her. And early Aurora Beam was pretty useful. Surf comes pretty quickly too. Still, I'd only say bump her to C tier.

Espeon is really D though. If you miss out on Psybeam, you are stuck with dead weight for a LONG time. Future Sight is not even worth considering, since Espeon is not made for tanking hits while it waits for it to kick in (and if you are switching to another pokemon during the wait, doesn't that defeat the purpose of using Espeon?). The only way to get psybeam is to catch a level 19 one, grind happiness by walking (can't do it by leveling since you'd miss that level 20 benchmark) and then level her at max happiness. Or go back and breed a level 1 Eevee, and then grind happiness (but a least you get 19 levels to do it in). Either way is horribly inefficient, since you are literally going out of your way for the sake of one pokemon.

Jolteon I'd like to hear more opinions from those who used it too. Running with thunder fang for what seemed like forever just kinda soured me, but it is useful in the psychic gym and the water elite four (and Lysandre too). And other than the grass and electric gyms, nothing really flat out walled it. But Shadow ball comes pretty late for a second coverage move. I'd still say D tier but won't protest if a mod' said C.

I feel for you, I like Eevee and her evolutions a lot (that's why I did a whole run with them). But liking them and their overall effectiveness are two different things.

I'm honestly shocked that my C-tier Flareon didn't raise any eyebrows.

I made an entry about Flareon and imo it's on the fence between B and C-tier. 130 ATK + Fire Fang / Flare Blitz + Return + Dig hits really, really hard. And quite a people agreed, but below C-tier is unthinkable.

Espeon is time-consuming (like Sylveon) but it's really good if you can have it with Psybeam. So yeah, I'd say C-tier.

Seviper is good. It has good mixed offensive stats, OK Typing, early powerful STABS, reliable coverage (Dig/Bulldoze/Earthquake, Flamethrower, Night Slash/Crunch, Dark Pulse, X-Scissor), and Coil late-game is pretty awesome too. Though, its fragile defenses and mediocre Speed (Glare can fix that although) hinder it. C-tier seems good to me.

Venipede D-tier? Scolipede comes relatively early and has 100 ATK and 112 Speed, with a decent Defense. Limbo C/D maybe?

I personally feel it is rather fair to be honest. Yeah they get really early trade evos which is a bonus too. They both function okay early on and do well against the first two gyms you get them but after that they do not get a real good matchup outside of Drasna and members of Team Flare. Even Drasna is a struggle since Dragalge is likely to hammer you for lots. As for individual qualities, Aromatisse gets great STAB coverage at about the mid-game and is reasonably bulky and even a good Sp. Attack value. Aromatisse is also slower than molasses and will take lots of hits quite often. Slurpuff has decent speed but has average stats and it also lacks a good STAB move early on. Fairy Wind until Level 31 is quite terrible. At least they get a lot of neutral matchups but I just do not think they are C-Tier worthy. Unless someone can prove me otherwise...

For Mothim I was looking at the semi-favourable matchups with Ramos and Olympia (emphasis on semi) and the rival as well as its fairly early evolution but its speed is mediocre and it is quite frail. Low D-Tier at best and it would probably be better off in E-Tier.

Masquerain is probably better on in E-Tier as well but I was probably overestimating Intimidate a little. Ledyba will probably find a place in F-Tier.

Pansear is probably by far the best of the elemental monkeys, like how Charmander and Fennekin are the best of their starter groups. Its tiering would not affect the others. C-Tier probably seems better on review given super early availability, good first, fourth, fifth (to an extent), sixth (to an extent) and eighth gyms, as well as Wilkstrom. C-Tier looks like a better fit for it on review.

Venipede struggles in the early-game and struggles pretty badly until its final form. It gets a lot better when it becomes Scolipede yes but it does not have many favourable matchups either. Ramos? Olympia? Team Flare to a degree? Valerie outside of Mawile? Its Special Bulk could be better too. I feel like D-Tier is a more fair assessment. Also I did away with Limbo Tiers lol.

Any final comments before I go ahead with this?

I COULD BE BANNED!
It learns Bulldoze, so it does well vs Grant, Clemont, Valerie (can solo her), Olympia (Sigilyph is a no), Team Flare (to some extent), and Wulfric bar Avalugg. VS Elite 4 it can help against Wilkstrom (Earthquake), and Rock Slide may be useful against Drasna and Malva (it can take like 1 or maybe 2 Pokemon vs the latter, but ofc soloing is unthinkable). Poor match-up vs Diantha though.
Besides, it learns Swords Dance, and coupled with good ATK and great Speed, this sounds C-tier to me.

I used Aromatisse in one of my early run-throughs.
You underestimate the combination of early DrainingKiss and Moonblast as long as you have not seen it. With occasional use of Calm Mind and NaturePower it has an easy time to contribute against many foes and still stay in good shape without excessive healing.
The low speed is of minor concern if you want the fastest playthrough, because you always go through the attack animations of the opponents pokemon but that´s really all you have to worry about. What a tank! I would vote for C tier.

Ledyba will probably find a place in F-Tier.
purely basing on theory: Masquerain has the advantage of coming at a higher level, right before a gym where it might in theory contribute. But it comes without notable STAB before the move relearner, where it can get everything you would ever desire - apart from water moves :). So it relies on being a utility slave with Intimidate and SweetScent. Also both bug types have in common that they are in the Medium Fast Experience group, which contrary to the name means a slower growth rate than e.g. members of the medium slow group up to the late 40ies.
All of this makes them pretty solid E tier. They have their moments if you invest a lot.

I had good results with Pansear as well.
But Pansage wasn´t far behind in performance, because it is one of the few Pokemon that can one shot Amaura without taking any damage or getting paralyzed and being able to go up against Tyrunt afterwards. Roselia can do this only with Giga Drain+Miracle Seed or quite some EV training in SpA and Speed to put this into perspective.

Venipede comes at lv 10-12 I roughly remember. It isn't that hard to get it to lv 22 with the massive amount of Exp you get on the following routes, since it is in the medium slow group.
As a Whirlipede I could reliably set up on Rock types thanks to Iron Defense and whittle down with Bug Bite or Infestation! Not that this is efficient but its far from struggling, when you get nice STAB moves early on.
I would see more problems in the 30ies, since Scolipede doesn´t get many movepool upgrades in this time, but Swords Dance+high Speed as well as the favorable gym match ups makes it easier than you would expect. D is ok but C isn´t that Farfetch´d :)

Any final comments before I go ahead with this?
The only one on that list that I've used in-game was Oddist -> Vileplume. While maybe not worth a rank up to C, it does have some points in its favor.

1. You can get Vileplume at level 21, before the rock gym if you are only keeping pace with opponent levels.
2. Poison is an okay stab in this game, and you get venoshock pretty early.
3. Sleep Powder
4. The only thing worth holding it's evolution for is Giga Drain, which can be bypassed for Petal Dance if you evolve early.

Gym coverage is fly or die. It can beat a lot of them, but there seems to be one pokemon that will give you trouble (Hawlucha, Weepinbell, Magneton, Mr. Mime) But if you abuse sleep mechanics....

I don't know. Maybe a C, maybe a D, just wanted to give my experience with it.

Alright time to get some of these out of the way...

Burmy (Mothim): N/A -> E-Tier
Ducklett: N/A -> D-Tier
Eevee (Glaceon): N/A -> E-Tier
Eevee (Leafeon): N/A -> E-Tier
Eevee (Umbreon): N/A -> E-Tier
Espurr (F): N/A -> D-Tier
Espurr (M): N/A -> D-Tier
Goldeen: N/A -> D-Tier
Gulpin: N/A -> D-Tier
Ledyba: N/A -> F-Tier
Masquerain: N/A -> E-Tier
Oddish (Bellossom): N/A -> D-Tier
Pansage: N/A -> D-Tier
Psyduck: N/A -> D-Tier
Skiddo: N/A -> C-Tier

Like before, all tierings are provisional until this tier list is sent to C&C. If you disagree with the tiering of something in some tier, do not be afraid to speak up & say why something should be lower or higher; it will be considered. It also means you are still welcome to nominate something tiered for another tier or validate its tiering.

Those tiered are pretty much all agreed on tierings, though the three Eeveelutions were all ranked E because they are either bad or come too late and do not offer much. I did not tier Carvanha, Vileplume, Pansear, Aromatisse, Slurpuff and Venipede. Carvanha because I brain farted and mistook it for Carnivine for some reason (and hence want to give it another chance). The latter five are a bit controversial and want to hold off before making decisions on them.

Some things to discuss:
Aromatisse: C-Tier or D-Tier?
Carvanha: D-Tier or E-Tier? Maybe higher?
Espeon: B-Tier or C-Tier? Maybe lower? (I am not too concerned about happiness relative to something like Sylveon's evolution condition)
Flareon: B-Tier or C-Tier? (Leaning much towards C here)
Jolteon: B-Tier or C-Tier? Maybe lower?
Pansear: C-Tier or D-Tier?
Slurpuff: C-Tier or D-Tier?
Vaporeon: C-Tier or D-Tier? (I do not think it is worth B to be honest)
Venipede: C-Tier or D-Tier?
Vileplume: C-Tier or D-Tier?

I will probably do another mass tiering blitz soon but I want to get these ones out of the way so we can then move on to the Coastal section (And get the eeveelutions out of the way too). Also if you do not agree with one's placing, feel free to argue but we should focus more on getting untiered things tiered.

Keep up the good work folks!

EDIT: Updated Tier List is now live.

This is going to be based solely on theory but I'd say:

D-Tier Carvanha: available as soon as you get the Good Rod but requires backtracking all the way to Route 22 so really you won't be getting it until you have Fly. It's very frail and will probably die a lot but it has good dual offenses and speed. It also has a decent enough movepool (Surf, Waterfall, Ice Beam, Crunch, Dark Pulse, Earthquake).

C-Tier Pansear: fire STAB is quite good in this game and it learns Incinerate at level 10. It's available very early although is somewhat rare and can be evolved with a Fire Stone before the 2nd gym. It might start to drop off a bit near the end but it's still seems like a solid choice.

C-Tier Jolteon: There is a Thunder Stone on the same route you get Eevee but until level 37 for Discharge or the 5th gym for the Thunderbolt TM it'll probably be pretty useless due to having bad attacks, basically relying on the pathetic Thunder Fang and maybe even Pin Missile off an astounding base 65 attack. Even then, the Shadow Ball TM doesn't come until Terminus Cave and until then your only powerful special attacks will be Electric-type. Honestly I think Jolteon could even end up landing in D-Tier.

Ok, I'll share some opinions here:

Espeon: B-Tier or C-Tier?: For me, it should be in B-tier, because it's very powerful and fast, has a nice movepool(I myself used Psychic/Shadow Ball/Dazzling Gleam/Grass Knot, but there's also Psyshock and Hidden Power if you're lucky), and can be found and evolved pretty early. It's frail, but most of the time, it'll just KO the opponent before it moves, so it doesn't matter much(It can be just me, though). It also helps against Korrina, Ramos' Weepinbell, and in many Team Flare battles. It does have a pretty bad match-up against the Elite Four(although Grass Knot helps against Siebold).

Vaporeon: C-Tier or D-Tier?: It should be in C-tier. It's bulky(yay base 130 HP) and powerful, learns some useful moves, like Surf and Ice Beam, has a very useful ability in Water Absorb, and helps against Team Flare and the Elite Four. It can be evolved relatively early, right after the second gym, because you need Strength to get the Water Stone in Route 8.

I'll post more later.

Also,

Aromatisse and Slurpuff both seem fine in D-Tier. Aromatisse is slow as all hell and will always be taking hits, although it is at least somewhat bulky thanks to base 101 HP. Even then its stats still are not that great. Slurpuff has somewhat balanced stats but all of them are average at best, and its movepool is atrocious.

Flareon is fine in C-Tier, as STAB fire moves and Return off base 130 attack hurt, but its coverage options and speed are too underwhelming for B-Tier imo.

Espeon seems powerful enough for B-Tier but if you don't evolve it for Psybeam at level 20 it's complete dead weight until you get Psychic, kind of like Jolteon although there is a way around the issue, it's just a bit of a pain to walk around for the sole purpose of maxing happiness. Even then, its coverage isn't great until you get more TMs like Dazzling Gleam and Shadow Ball. Either B or C seem fine.

Venipede comes a good while before the 2nd badge on Route 6, and you get the Venoshock TM on the same route. Once fully evolved, it has a solid base 100 attack and base 112 speed. It also has a good movepool, getting moves like Bulldoze, Rock Tomb, and X-Scissor reasonably early from TMs. It can be helpful against most boss matchups bar Grant and Malva who it should stay away from. Venipede itself can struggle a bit in the early game however, but it is in the Medium Slow group so it levels up quickly in the early game. it doesn't have that many favorable matchups although there are also not many bad matchups for it either. I'd say C-Tier.

I didn't use Venipede, but Bug/Poison is interesting against Fighting Gym (x4 resist) Grass Gym (resist + poison STAB), Electric Gym (thanks to Bulldoze), Fairy Gym (Poison Stab), Psychic Gym (Bug Stab, but be careful against faster ennemies) and for the Ice Type, Bug Stab can help against Obamasnow, but it's meh

I still don't believe Espeon deserves B-tier, even if I was being overly hard on it before.

I disagree that ignoring Sylveon's method of evolution on tier placement applies to Espeon as well, mainly because it is a different method of happiness grinding and that you have a level 20 critical evolution benchmark for psybeam. If you miss that, then Espeon is useless for you until the fairy gym gives it Dazzling Gleam (or level 37 Psychic, whichever comes first). That's about three gyms of dead weight going by the NPC trainer level curve.

In it's favor, it is fast and strong and can pull the team through Korrina and Team Flare (with Dazzling Gleam for dark types), but only if you don't miss psybeam. But it still doesn't have that good of gym coverage after Korrina (heck, Jolteon has better gym coverage).

C tier for Pansear, fire is very good in this game.
