Pokémon XY General Discussion

Talking about the existence of rumors on another site is the same thing as "discussing unconfirmed rumors" (i.e., something disallowed by the rules). Please do not push this point further. As I said yesterday, if you would like to discuss leaks/rumors, please do so on IRC (link in signature), not in this thread or in this forum.

Do not even mention anything that is not revealed officially in this thread. When we get confirmation that any leaks are legitimate, the moderators will start a new thread for spoilers. This thread is to remain spoiler free. I do not want peoples' experiences with the game ruined unless they choose to seek out the information themselves.
I didn't say anything earlier when a similar post was made because I was sure that that someone would misinterpret what I was saying as "smart-assery", but this is contradictory and probably confusing for some users. This thread is for news and discussion which runs counter to the idea that someone would be able to read this thread and avoid spoilers. Any news on the game (new pokemon, megas, etc) is a spoiler but that's the kind of stuff that that is up for discussion here. If someone wants to avoid spoilers they shouldn't be reading this thread at all! The emphasis should be on avoiding discussion of rumors.

Arbitrary conversational rules are great!

Seriously, I run a large forum where there is no moderation, and it's fantastic. I've never heard a good reason from a moderator for why sticking to a particular topic 100% of the time is a good thing. Goes against what humans have been doing for millions of years. It's just an internet power trip thing tbh; it exists nowhere else except in debates, and forums aren't debates.

Which isn't to say I don't mind following the rules, I'd just like to point out that they're pointless, on every forum including this one.

^That depends on what the readers expect from the thread. At Smogon, they will expect a serious discussion, with no reports of false news, no wishlisting or straying off-topic. That's what we are "selling" to the world, and that is what we have to give them. Other forums with slacker rules might attract other types of speculation and discussion, and that's fine. But here we try to follow a certain set of standards. Straying from them would be disappointing to those who try to follow the discussion.

The new pokemon shown on other websites are blatantly real and were leaked by two different sources showing one of same pokemon in a different screenshot. They show evolved versions and the over world in gameplay, which would be a incredibly difficult task to photoshop. Thats why other major sites are running with the leaks as game reviewing companies now have the game. Avoiding the conversation here is silly, its new information.

A bigger discussion, it appears gamefreak copied the idea of Tomahawk from smogons own create a pokemom project for the new pokemon. Not exactly the same but the similarity is there.

^Given the obscene amount of Fakemons on the Internet (probably numbered in the tens of millions), it's no wonder that the new Pokémon bear similarities to some of them. By the laws of numbers alone, it would be near impossible for GameFreak to come up with an entirely original design, especially if they have to stay within the limits of reason.

As for your first paragraph... well, I'm inclined to agree with you. Still, "giving in" and allowing these leaks to be discussed sets presedence for discussion of other leaks which might not be as credible. By only discussing officially released material, we stay on the safe side. This topic will be locked in a little over ten days, might as well stick to our standards for what little time remains. Those who want to discuss the leaks, have plenty of other places to do so. Smogon even has a place, #orangeislands on IRC.

Spoilers meaning information that is not released in an official capacity. The definition of spoiler I was using is clear from the first line of the post you quoted. It is assumed on a Pokémon forum such as this one that people will keep up with the basics of reveals such as the few Pokémon revealed prior to release, mega evolutions, etc. It is not assumed that they want to spoil major plot details, every single Pokémon, etc. It is not that hard to wait for a spoilers thread to be started once we get reliable leaks.

The rules for this thread and for this forum are really not that complicated: discuss things we know are in the game. Anything else is antithetical to the purpose of this particular forum and its description. As I said earlier, once we get irrevocable proof that the aforementioned "leaks" are real (i.e. video, official confirmation, multiple sources that don't delete them immediately and call them fake), the leaks will be up for discussion. This decision was made by the moderating team as a whole, it isn't some power trip on my part.

Smogon is not the type of forum you describe and you should not expect it to be. It wasn't even until last year that we had a casual Pokémon discussion forum. And for the most part, I would classify Smogon as a "debate" forum. We expect serious, thoughtful discussion.

EDIT: Also, I'm not the moderator who deleted recent posts discussing this topic, so redirect your frustration elsewhere regarding that.

I like the rules in this thread. This way I will be able to go into the games without getting to much spoiled beforehand. I think the official "spoilers" give enought news to get me hyped for the games while simultaneously not spoiling to much. If we start discussing too many unconfirmed/unofficial real spoilers I think it will take away a lot of the fun with playing the games and discovering new things ingame.

Points of order:
- The "no competitive gameplay discussion" in this forum exists because (and I remember this with BW), given the nature of the site we're on, competitive gameplay given more than a little wiggle room ends up completely dominating the discussion.
- Stellar et al. have been more than lenient in enforcing *that* topical ban mostly to when people have clearly moved well past "this makes something neat" to "Fairy type should be immediate priority for suspect testing."
- Given how well that ban was followed, I don't have high hopes for keeping all the "unconfirmed rumor" speculation confined to an "unconfirmed rumor" thread, and I frankly don't want to see that in this thread.
- It's really not in the site's scope anyway.

If you want to argue about the way the forums are set-up, you need to be making this argument above the section moderators, because you're asking for something that goes above and beyond what the site as a whole is intended to offer, not merely Orange Islands. While I may enjoy browsing the rumors over at PokeBeach now and then, having seen the bulbagarden forums, I'm quite content to leave them on bulbagarden. I'm posting on smogon's XY thread instead for a reason, and it's because the discussion is being kept relatively focused and straightforward.

The moment you posted on the thread, you agreed to follow its rules. You're not the moderator of the thread or the one who set the rules. And if you still want to debate the viability of the rules, this isn't the place to do it. Look at us. Now we're discussing about how we should or should not discuss about unconfirmed rumors. Let me give me my piece of advice on this.. wait, I don't have any. Let's get back to X&Y discussion.

A brand new Nintendo Direct is set to air tomorrow. Nintendo have said they will ‘provide updates on upcoming 3DS and Wii U games launching this year’. This means you don’t have to go expecting new Smash Bros details or Mario Kart, but you never know with Nintendo. There is a possibility that they will give us a new English XY trailer, hopefully with new footage and a Pokémon reveal or two (Orot please?).

International times are the following (with countries listed rather than confusing time zones):

7 am Pacific, 10 am Eastern, 3 pm United Kingdom, 4 pm Mainland Europe, 11 pm Japan time.

Quick question about the nature of the Pokedex spoiler - was it a week before Black and White that it was leaked, and Serebii updated with it? Or was it two/three? I'm having some troubles remembering it, although I do remember the upheaval about the new 'Dex. While it doesn't give us an exact date or anything, the distinction between one and two weeks could really help out with when we will be expecting huge amounts of spoilers.

I think at this point, if you want avoid spoilers, go live under a rock intil the 15th or you are far enough through the game that spoilers do not matter so much. Also remeber that the DS was cracked we had a lot of the info as soon as a rom dump was made, this time around we might not have that sort of information for a while.

Whilst this place will be relatively spoilor free, you cannot guarantee the mods catching any "spoilery" images at any moment (or in tiny amounts of time). Just execute caution :)

I don't remember it either, but I'm pretty sure we've crossed the event horizon already.

Regardless, BW1 was a special case; the full Dex list "leaked" earlier, but Hirobyte/Melkor were spoiling the new pokémon as soon as September (that month's CoroCoro revealed pokémon they had already spoiled). We still haven't gotten anything like that (hint: Hiro knows nothing this time), so at worst, we'll have early buyers taking shitty pictures from their 3DSes.

Oh, and maybe Italo-Mexican reviewers noesfaking.

I think I'm set on getting X and choosing Froakie as my starter. Eleven days feels so far off though :x

Do you guys think that there will be any trainers named after any notable people from French history (not named Napoleon)? I hope so. Maybe the champion will be based off of Joan of Arch or Louis XIV (the Sun King). Maybe even Marie Antoinette with a Pokémon based off a cake as her main!

So far, none of the champs or Gym Leaders have had any direct basis in reality. You can bet your shiny whistle the anime will probably go there, especially since Jeanne d'Arc is a somewhat popular subject for import and blasphemy creative re-imaginings of a divinely sanctified medieval French teenager who led an army through a tragic and nationalistic era, which hits so many Japanese cultural buttons that she might as well be called Yamato-ko-chan semi-historical shonen hagiographies. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few veiled references though.

I'm all for a champion based on Joan of Arch or Louis XIV. Maybe for a champion based on Joan you encounter her throughout the game disguised as a male trainer who roams the region? For a Louis XIV champion, in the post-game you can battle a man based on the Man in the iron mask, who was rumored to be Louis brother, is a bonus boss.
