Pokemon Scarlet & Violet - 18th Nov 2022! **OFFICIAL INFO ONLY**

It's not like the Galarian Birds even had an explanation to why they were like that so I could see them just dropping a legendary as a regional just because

Paldea Groudon, why not, who cares. Turns out there were multiple Groudons who did things in other parts of the world. None of that matters; check out this new lizard we made that will [spins wheel] dominate VGC
I'm all for this, spin that wheel already and give me Pandean Groudon, Pandean Kyogre and mega Panquaza

not impossible but they could also have just like copied the cofagrigus moveset levels for parity purposes and always had the evolution method in mind.
Possibly, but counterpoint Galarian Slowbro doesn't do that. It learns like 3 moves after evolution level, but it learns them at the same level Galarian Slowpoke does, not the level regular Slowbro does.

I dunno, I still think my idea's about as possible. If you hunt & peck you can find various inconsistencies. Politoed got tethered to Poliwrath's shortened move pool (& by the time we got to Politoed's final version it had long since given up the stone evolution pathway), but Slowking wasn't beholden to Slowbro. Leafeon & Glaceon follow the trend set by the other eeveelutions rather than having their own thing. Alolan Persian has parity with Persian despite being happiness, but Alolan Sandslash truncates it to match being a stone evolution (or at least, to match Ninetales its VE). Steelix in gen 2 (&.....8....?) gains an extra move at the end of its moveset for no real reason. Cursola & Mr Rime evolve by level but keep the same movesets as their pre-evolutions but Obstagoon & Perrserker (matches Persian) have the "traditional" moveset where it extends the levels.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the movepools just a case of SwSh "standardizing" move learning to happen every 5 levels and based on the move's BP? Like sure that its odd for the level that some Pokémon evolve but the same moves are learned nearly universally at the same level for every mon (Which I'm assuming is bc of SwSh's troubled development needing to cut corners seeing as even as soon as Legends they already got rid of this system)

On that note I am hoping SV doesn't do this as well because its an incredibly boring way to work with level up moves

SWSH did a number of standardizing in that sense but they did, with various exceptions as I outlined above, still stick to their usual rules of thumbs from other entries:
-pokemon that evolve by level up or happiness will usually learn moves later. Bulbasaur even in SWSH will learn all its moves by level 36, Ivysaur will lear those same moves by level 50, Venusaur by level 58
-Pokemon that (normally) evolve by stone will usually stop learning moves (but also they have their entire moveset from earlier stages shoved into their level 1 moves now)
-Pokemon that evolve through other methods, such as Location, Trade, by Move or by Item, will learn things at the same levels

So Runerigus "should" have still learned moves at the same time as Yamask-G but you can apply that same rule to several other Pokemon both in SWSH and in previous generations and still find exceptions

Side note I hope SV keeps the way LA handled stone evolutions, because they're such a mess otherwise and its just much simpler to retain the same moveset instead of truncating.

Y'all spent countless pages that I'm not reading talking about the potential of Teraligatr (I don't remember the name) in comp and zany schemes like how to get rid of as many Shedinja weaknesses as possible.

Those are very riveting questions, but hopefully you didn't miss the real gem of the mechanic.

Flying-Tera, Air Balloon, Levitate Rotom-Fan. Even MORE ways to double down on removing that Ground weakness by removing the Electric-type from it!

Huh, I hadn't thought of Tera being like Z crystals, but that's a possibility. Something like "you can only terarize a pokemon if your Tera Orb has absorbed the power of their Tera type, so visit the ancient towers and touch the crystals within to gain that power". That would let GF lock the more powerful/weird/niche types in distant corners of the map, forcing the player to only Tera their starter for the first 2+hours.
But if that's the case then you couldn't use the Event Tera-Flying Pikachu until you're able to find the Flying Tower, not to mention they also heavily advertised the Normal Terastal. I would agree that you'd need to go to the Towers to unlock more Tera Types, but because of the factors I just listed I think there's likely a set order. Like the first tower will unlock Normal, than the second tower will unlock Flying, and then so on and so forth. This method will also allow GF to have greater control over what Tera Types would be available to the player.

My list: 1. Normal, 2. Flying, 3. Bug, 4. Poison, 5. Electric, 6. Dark, 7. Rock, 8. Ice, 9. Ground, 10. Fighting, 11. Psychic, 12. Ghost, 13. Fairy, 14. Steel, & 15. Dragon.

What the heck are these fiery wisp things?
They look to be "embers" coming out of the caldera. Guessing they're actually like the raw energy which Terastal uses which comes out from the caldera and showers over Paldea. They could also very well be the crystals associated with Terastal (the crystal in the Tera Orb, the crystal dens the Raids take place in, the crystal structures we see part of one of the stories which Alven is involved in, etc.). Likely whatever Legendary is responsible for Terastal is inside the caldera, though for what reason would it have releasing Terastal crystals all over Paldea?

Ooh, NEW THEORY! Before I said that I think the Terastal effect is being cause by a crystal creature similar to the Zygarde Cells which is being held within the Tera Orb (and is the angry eyes on the crown when your Pokemon Terastallizes). But what if the crystals aren't creatures but rather are sort of like beacons of the Legendary being sent out to watch the outside world, the eyes on the crowns meaning the Legendary is "watching" what's going on (and yes it's able to watch multiple instances of Terastallizing, its essentially splitting its essence into bitesize proportions so people would find and use the power they have but not be alerted of any danger).

On that note, I wonder if there is some sort of "wild boss" mon like Totems. Legends Arceus saw the return of Trial Captains as Wardens (their different names is entirely a localisation thing, their JP class is the exact same) so I can totally see something similar playing out here. Only thing that points against this is that for there to be 18 different mons to play out as tera tower bosses + 13 mons as league aces (gyms + elite4 + champion) + whatever bosses the third story progression has, that'd be a lot of mons filling the role as some story boss, and definitely way more than they've ever done for one single game, so I'm not sure how realistic of an expectation this is
Hmm, maybe there's a hint with the number of floors each tower has. There are three 1-story towers, ten 2-story towers, and two 3-story towers. If the number of floors does determine the kind of challenge that tower has, and if one of the challenges is battling a Terastal guardian, I'm willing to put money on it being the 2-story towers.

Why? Because we need to fill in the Types! "Fill in for what"? For the Signature Terastals of course! We need at least 18 to have a Signature Terastal for each Type, it's how it worked with Megas and Gigantamax (Z-Moves were different as they didn't come with a form change, it was just a special super attack for a few specific Pokemon, only slightly more powerful than a normal Z-Move). Now the Types used by the Gym Leaders and Elite Four can have their Terastals shown off by them, which means 6 Types are left out. Now taking into account the Starter Types we already have access to, that means 9 (if there's a Specialist for all three Starter Types) to 3 (if there's no Specialist for the Starter Types) of the fifteen towers will be of Types which Signature Terastal Pokemon isn't shown. Also taking into account they usually add in a few extra just to add variety, and I think it's plausible we could have 10 Terastal Guardians battles + the Gym Leaders & Elite Four having their own Signature Terastal Pokemon (as for "the Champion", well we'll see, if there is one then that's just one more Signature Terastal they'd need to make). If 22/23 sound a lot, Megas began with 28 and Gigantamax began with 26.

But then I wonder what thing the three 1-floor and two 3-floor towers will be about. To note where they are:

  • 1-Floor: (1.) In the desert on the west side, (2.) in a bottom rocky part of the snowy mountain on its east side, & (3.) just before the blocking clouds on the northeast corner, top of the black spike mountain range and right next to a 2-floor tower.
  • 3-Floor: (1.) Southwest near arid town on cliff & (2.) in the quarry area on the east side.

Route 1 could be a snowy route once, just once ... it wouldn't be dangerous.
Wouldn't be dangerous but you'd know they would make it as annoying as Sinnoh's Route 217 with sinking snow traps cause snow/ice gave someone on GF childhood trauma.

Do you have a feeling that Game Freak never bothered to really fix all the problems with Ice-type just to spite those who criticized all of the Ice-type’s legitimate problems?
You mean, the feeling that Game Freak doesn't see that as a problem at all?
I think that's mainly it. It's probably not something GF even thinks about. Like the "coldest" region they've done so far we're told is Sinnoh but we start the game in the warmer parts first. They would need to do a region based somewhere cold like Canada, Greenland/Iceland, Norway/Sweden/Finland, or Russia before they're likely to think to start the player in a snowy location first. And EVEN THEN, while we might get some Ice-types early on at long last, you can bet there would also be a colder/more icy/hailing location later on with exclusive Ice-types of its own late game.

As for the Level Evo issue with some mid-30's mons or extremely late items, if GF is going to insist on not changing levels (...) then why not add alternatives or secondary options? Feebas had the Held Item method implemented to stand-in for Contest stats, but they kept both methods working when ORAS allowed Beauty Contest stats again to do the old means. I don't think too many individual items are good, but maybe something akin to the one-fits-many option in PoGo with the Stones

Why not add something like, I don't know, "Ultra Evolution Pills" (flavor of item needs work) that are available in incredibly scarce quantities until post-game, where they let a Pokemon evolve 5-10 levels earlier if held and then get consumed? That could even add a little bit of playthrough customization, where you can use a late evolution Pokemon sooner, but not too many at once without work due to the limited access. Or how about just adding existing methods via limited availability items, like Eevee can evolve into Espeon using a Sun Stone (uncommon earlygame without a sidetrack), OR by the friendship method if you don't have the item available?
Two ideas:
  • Friendship Perk. (Hears an entire chorus of screams). HEAR ME OUT! Hear me out. Yes, GF has gone a bit overboard with the Friendship perks, letting a Pokemon endure a KOing attack with 1 HP or shaking off status ailments, but I don't think this would be out of the realm of what you would believe a high friendship would allow. Any old school fans remember this scene:
We've seen this idea play out many times in not just the main anime but other Pokemon-related media. The idea a Pokemon evolving not because they got to the right Level but because they love their trainer. Hence I don't see why they can't make it so that the higher the friendship you have with a Pokemon the more earlier they will evolve if they can & do so by Level.

  • Evolution Stones. We don't need to make a new item to allow a Pokemon to evolve earlier, we already have them! Just split the 18 Types between the currently existing Evo Stones: Fire Stone (Fire), Water (Water), Thunder (Electric & Steel), Leaf (Grass & Bug), Moon (Fairy & Rock), Sun (Dragon & Ground), Light (Psychic & Normal), Dusk (Dark, Ghost & Poison), Dawn (Fighting & Flying), & Ice (Ice). Then when you expose a Pokemon which evolves by Level with one of the Evo Stones matching its Type it'll allow that Pokemon to evolve like 1.5x earlier than it would normally (so if you want to evolve Swinub early, you'd use either a Ice Stone or Sun Stone on it when its at least Level 20). It would give the Evo Stones an additional and much wider use then just evolving a handful of specific Pokemon. Being how they like giving away Evo Stones as rewards for raids & treasure getting mini-games, it would the stack of Evo Stones you start cumulating having some additional purpose aside from money fodder by selling them.
Of course this doesn't absolve the problem but just put a bandage on it. The best solution would of course be looking through every Pokemon in a Regional Dex (as long as we're still doing Limited Dexes), at what point can you catch them, and adjust their Evolution Levels so that they're like 10-15 Levels from Evolving. That way you still have to train them a bit, but it would be balanced/reasonable from the point you caught it in the game. Though if they ever do bring back the National Dex, what they should also do is, after a Pokemon's debut gen, figure out a reasonable Level progression to act as the default if the Pokemon isn't catchable in the wild. I made a list of the most egregious examples and what Level I would hav them evolve at:
  • 16: Bellsprout
  • 20: Venonat, Diglett, Abra, Machop, Goldeen, Smoochum, Elekid, Magby, Slugma, Spheal, Gothita, Solosis
  • 25: Meowth, Psyduck, Koffing, Glameow, Vanillite, Klink, Litwick, Tynamo, Axew, Noibat, Sandyghast, Dreepy
  • 30: Ponyta, Slowpoke, Seel, Grimer, Horsea, Omanyte, Kabuto, Sealeo, Snorunt, Lileep, Anorith, Scraggy, Frillish, Elgyem, Litwick
  • 35: Rhyhorn, Wailmer, Skorupi, Rufflet, Vullaby, Mienfoo, Pawniard, Golett, Deino, Tyrunt, Amaura, Skrelp
  • 45: Vanillish, Klang, Fraxure, Larvesta
  • 50-55: Zweilous, Drakloak

My hopes is them being "forced" to retcon evolution methods in gen 8, on a larger scale than the Feebas issue in gen 5, might get them to consider this more. Especially since they stuck to it in Legends Arceus (& BDSP) when they didn't need to.
Let's see, working backwards here if you don't mind:

  • Of the PLA Pokemon think the only ones who need changing are Wyrdeer and Overwqil, instead of Stantler & Qwilfish needing to use their new Signature Move 20 times just have them evolve when they Level-up knowing the Move. Others who need a slight adjustment is Ursaluna and Basculegion, Ursaring should just evolve being exposed to a Peat Block at Night and they'd need to lower the HP amount Basculin needs to lose from recoil.
  • Kubfu I'm not sure what they're going to do. Was up to me I'd have it evolve starting at Level 30 under the following condition: If you have Water-types in your party (and more than Dark-types) it evolves into Rapid Strike, if you have Dark-types in your party (and more than Water-types) it evolves into Single Strike. It will not evolve if there's no Water- or Dark-types in your party or there's an equal amount of Water & Dark-types in your party.
  • Milcery, that's a tough one. Okay, I'd say split the Berries between its 9 forms, than make it so when you expose Milcery to a Sweet whole holding a Berry it'll evolve into the Alcremie which flavor is based on what form that Berry was associated with and decorated with the Sweet it was exposed to.
  • G-Yamask I say toss out the arc and just make it happen when it has taken 49 HP in damage without fainting. If they want there to be an additional requirement, make it so it also needs to know Grudge/Curse.
  • Have Meltan evolve in the games already. You can make it Level 40 to reference needing 400 Candies in GO.
  • Oddly I thought for the Cosmog family, after Gen VI, I thought its evo would be based on day or night. But no, in SwSh it's still version based for some reason.
  • Have Rockruff evolve into Midday Form Lycanroc during the day, Dusk Form an hour or two between the change from day to night, and Midnight Form during the night. No needing Hidden Abilities.
  • Crabrawler can just use Ice Stone.
  • Have Sliggoo evolve if its raining in battle.
  • Play with Inkay in the Pokemon-Amie equivalent when it reaches Level 30, after playing with it enough it'll flip itself upside down. Stop playing with it and level it up and it'll evolve (if used in a battle it'll be sent out upside-down, however if you command it to use an attack it'll flip itself right-side-up and will not evolve if it levels up).

Gonna stop here as I feel starting with Inkay the strange evo methods started to happen.

jynx is bad because it looks like that
Is that supposed to be a motherf***ing Jojo Who Framed Roger Rabbit reference?

Forward facing eyes, animalistic behavior. They look and sound like humans and have the abilities to immobilize us with dance and kisses. They're aggressive mimics, and the prey they mimic is us.

Just imagine you're walking in the woods and you think you hear a woman yelling for help. But no, instead this fucking thing is slowly dancing towards you. You try to flee but you can't, all you can do is dance. In your final moments you are put to sleep by a flurry of lovely kisses. Jynx begins to feed. The young Smoochum will eat well tonight.
Not unless your a Vanillite.

One of my biggest disappointments for ice types was snom.
Frosmoth got robbed, should have been an Ice version of Volcarona.

To be fair they will run out of gen 1 pokes to make regional forms of some d--

*looks at Meowth*

ok maybe not.
I'm actually kind of hoping they do another Meowth regional just to make it a running gag. Apparently in Madrid there's something of a tradition of people calling themselves "Gatos", so maybe they could do something with that?

That aside, what I want them to repeat though (wouldn't be surprised if it happens in a ipotetic DLC) would be "regional legendaries".
That would be neat to see, but also something likely saved for DLC.

I originally included a list of all the "untouched" Gen I 'mons as a list of potential candidates for Paldean forms with the post, but eventually decided against it. I realized that the assumption that they'd work their way through that list would be a weak one at best. Slowbro had both a Mega and a Galarian form (and, of course, a branched evolution with its own Galarian form), Gengar had a Mega and a G-Max form, and Meowth has multiple regional forms. There are other examples too, of course.

The "untouched" Gen I Pokémon - those that never got cross-gen evolutions, Megas, regional forms, G-Max forms or any such things like that - form a surprisingly long list when you look at it. But it's also mainly filled with quite obscure Pokémon, for the most part. I wouldn't take it for granted that Game Freak would keep digging into the shrinking pool of limited-popularity Pokémon instead of reusing the popular gang once more. I mean, new forms of Seel or Spearow would not make quite as much of a buzz as a new Blastoise or Gengar.

That being said, there are some stand-out candidates that still have received nothing after so many years. For a start, the Psyduck family. I wonder whether its status as Masuda's favourite would be an argument for or against it receiving a new form. Then there's the Dratini family, notably the only pseudo-legendary family from the first four generations never to get anything. And the Bellsprout family, the sole remaining "ordinary" three-stage family from Gen I never to be touched (Nidos and Dratini aside). Likewise, Tauros is the only single-stage family left from Gen I, aside from Ditto.

Still, I'm not suspecting every Paldean form to be from a family that hasn't seen any "upgrades" since its introduction. And with approximately 18 slots, there's only room for one or two evolution families from each generation. They could very well give us Paldean Rattata/Raticate and leave us with that from Gen I.

Honestly speaking I'm all for it. Genwunning aside, I'm a fan of recurring gags and I wouldn't exactly be annoyed if we ended up getting a million Meowth forms. Though I wouldnt dislike more Persian too.

Dragonite was showcased as one of the Tera raids in the trailers, SURELY preparing us for the SuperTeraGiga Dragonite form COPIUM
(Though tbh Dragonite may still be one of the better beneficiaries of regular Tera anyway due to being able to actually acquire stab on shit like Extreme Speed, Earthquake or similar attacks it normally runs, instead of the very mediocre Dragon Claw or Dual Wingbeat...Extreme Killer Dragonite sounds kinda pog actually, even has more attack than Arceus lol)
